Mrs. Campbell was born on Aug. 1, 1917, in Greenville, Miss., to Howard Dyer and Anne Thomas Dyer.

Following graduation from Greenville High School, she attended Mary Baldwyn College for two years and was graduated from the University of Mississippi. Before marrying, her work included serving as a secretary for the Rev. T. Russell Nunan at the First Presbyterian Church in Greenville. Later, in the 1960s, she taught for two years in the Greenville public schools, after which she began her years of community service as a volunteer.

She worked with former County Court Judge Joe Wroten as a Youth Court volunteer and then helped organize the first Delta Boy's Group Home, providing a shelter for abused, runaway and needy boys. Later she helped organize a similar home for girls.

In 1980, she and a group of similarly dedicated volunteers established the Gregg Youth Court School, a school for juveniles in detention. At the Gregg School, she taught and was instrumental in obtaining funding and maintaining a full volunteer staff. She also volunteered numerous hours tutoring children in elementary schools and with the Lighthouse Lodge, Habitat for Humanity, the Boy's and Girl's Club of Washington County, Church Women United, the First Presbyterian Church, William Alexander Percy Memorial Library Board, the United Way of Washington County, the Literacy Council, the Greenville Foundation, the Greenville Council on Aging, the Greenville Garden Club and the Democratic Executive Committee.

Known as Martha to her friends and Presh to her family, Martha Dyer Campbell was a quiet but compelling force of nature infused with a natural optimism, an innate kindness and a contagious joie de vivre, which enriched beyond measure the lives of all who ever knew her.

A lifelong Presbyterian and staunch Democrat, she passionately believed in giving all people a real chance and spent her life trying to create an environment where that chance could be realized. Her rollicking sense of humor could be deceiving. In fact, she was a highly creative thinker who had a deep and inquisitive intellect manifested in a love of reading. Always drawn to other people's lives, understandably, her favorite books were biographies. Her kind and generous spirit will live forever in the lives she has touched, in the memories of the friends she adored and in the hearts of her family, whom she held dearest of all.

She was preceded in death by her husband of 53 years, Roy D. Campbell Jr.

She is survived by three children, Anne Campbell Stuart (Claude) of Houston, Texas, Roy D. Campbell III (Nancy) of Jackson, Miss., and Martha Thomas Campbell of Louisville, Ky.; a foster child, Gregg L. Newby (Beth) of Memphis, Tenn.; five grandchildren; one foster grandchild; and a devoted sister, Marianne Gannon of Greenville.

The family will receive friends at the home of Mr. and Mrs. J. Barthell Joseph Jr., 1079 Cedar St., Greenville, today from 5 to 7 p.m.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be given to the First Presbyterian Church, Greenville; the Campbell-Stuart Scholarship Trust, in care of Trustmark National Bank, P.O. Box 777, Greenville MS 38702; or to a favorite charity.
