Dees

GREENVILLE -- Funeral services for Herman Buford Dees, 76, of Greenville, a retired deputy sheriff, will be Monday at 10 a.m. at Boone-Wells Funeral Home, Greenville. He died of heart failure Aug. 31, 2001, at Greenwood Leflore Hospital, Greenwood. Burial will be at 4 p.m. Monday in Calhoun Church Cemetery, Hot Coffee.

Mr. Dees was born in Taylorsville, Miss., and graduated from Salem High School. He enlisted in the U.S. Navy during World War II. After his discharge, he became a Naval Reserve training officer until 1962. A resident of Greenville since 1956, he was employed with the Greenville Police Department from 1962 to 1975. He then transferred to the Greenville Fire Department, where he was assistant fire marshal until retiring in 1985. He then worked as a deputy sheriff with the Washington County Sheriff's Department before being elected constable in 1989. He retired in 1998. He was a Baptist, and a member of the Elks Lodge, the Greenville Yacht Club, the Italian Club, Shriners, Masons, and the American Legion. He was past president of the Mississippi Constable Association.

Survivors include his wife, Johnnie Valentine Dees of Greenville; one daughter, Sylvia Dees Sessums of Greenville; one son, Herman Mike Dees of Ridgeland; two sisters, Bessie Kite of Blacksburg, Va., and Peggy Quick of Collins; one brother, Ranson Dees of Hot Coffee; four grandchildren; two great-grandchildren; and a host of nieces and nephews.

The family will receive friends today from 3 to 5 p.m. at Boone-Wells Funeral Home, Greenville.

Hall

GREENVILLE -- Funeral arrangements for Maurice Hall, 31, of Greenville are pending at Byas Funeral Home, Greenville. Hall died Aug. 31, 2001, at Delta Regional Medical Center, Greenville.

Ranson

GREENVILLE -- Funeral arrangements for Charles Ranson, 66, of Greenville are pending at Watson-Edwards & Evans Funeral Home, Greenville. He died Aug. 30, 2001, at his home.

Scott

LELAND -- Graveside services for Lillian Juanita Blaylock Scott, 72, of Leland were Thursday at 2 p.m. in Oakwood Cemetery, Winona. She died of heart failure Aug. 28, 2001, at her home. Burial was under the direction of Oliver Funeral Home, Winona.

Mrs. Scott was born in Montgomery County, Miss., to Montee Blaylock and the late Walter Leo Blaylock. She was a retired supervisor of Southern Bell Telephone and Telegraph Co. She was a member of First Baptist Church in Leland, and was the widow of Jack Scott.

Survivors include her mother, Montee Blaylock of Winona, and one brother, Bennie Blaylock of Winona.

The Rev. John L. Walker officiated.

Skipper

GREENVILLE -- Funeral arrangements for Mary L. Skipper, 79, of Greenville are pending at Redmon Funeral Home, Greenville. She died Aug. 31, 2001, at Methodist Hospital South, Memphis.

Stovall

INDIANOLA -- Funeral services for Lela K. Stovall, 79, of Indianola were Saturday at 1 p.m. at Mt. Beulah Church, Indianola. She died Aug. 23, 2001, at her home. Burial was in Riverside Memorial Gardens, Indianola, under the direction of Byas Funeral Home, Indianola.

Survivors include four daughters, Victoria Brown, Lottie B. Clay and Lindell King, all of Indianola, and Theresa Davis of Chicago; two sons, Wilson Stovall Jr. of Chicago and John B. Hill of Indianola; and one brother, John Thomas of Jackson.

The Rev. E.T. Goodman officiated.

Washington

INDIANOLA -- Funeral arrangements for Robert Washington, 74, of Indianola are pending at Byas Funeral Home, Indianola. He died Sept. 1, 2001, at Delta Regional Medical Center, Greenville.

Bryan

WEST POINT -- Funeral services for Catherine "Kitty" Wilkerson Bryan, 93, of West Point, Miss., a homemaker and social worker, will be Tuesday at 11 a.m. at the First United Methodist Church in West Point, Miss. She died July 20, 2002, at her home in West Point, Miss. Burial will be in the Greenwood Cemetery in West Point, Miss., under the direction of Calvert Funeral Homes Inc., West Point, Miss.

She was the eldest of five children born to the late Jefferson Pinkley and Caroline Mosby Wilkerson on Feb. 22, 1909, in Winterville, Miss. Mrs. Bryan graduated from Greenville High School in 1927, the year of the great Mississippi River Flood, which broke through the levee three miles from the Wilkerson family home. She was eventually rescued from the rooftop of a building and taken to Greenville, where they took a riverboat to Vicksburg. From there, they took a train to Memphis, meeting other family where they stayed for two months before the river fell below flood stage.

She went on to Mississippi State College for Women where she graduated in 1931. She also received a graduate degree in social work from Tulane University in 1935.

While a social worker in northern Mississippi, she married John Henry Bryan of West Point, July 20, 1935, in Columbus. Mrs. Bryan worked briefly at Bryan Brothers Packaging Company, a firm established in 1936 by her husband and his brother W.B. Bryan. The Bryan Brothers grew into one of the south's largest meat packing companies and merged with the Sara Lee Corporation in 1968.

Mrs. Bryan was a devoted member of First Presbyterian Church and the First Presbyterian Church (PCUSA) where she was a founder and elder. She also had an active interest in genealogy research and was noted expert in the field.

She was an avid supporter of the public schools of West Point and was a member of the Jr. Auxiliary and Daughters of the American Revolution. She was an advocate for children with special needs and helped found the Clay County Association for Special Children. The Catherine W. Bryan School for Special Children was established in her honor with funds provided by family, friends and the Hardin Foundation.

Mrs. Bryan was a dedicated wife and mother to their four children, John H. Bryan Jr.; Caroline Bryan Harrell, Catherine Bryan Dill and George W. Bryan.

She was elected as Mississippi Mother of the year in 1979 and loved to enrich her children's minds through travel, education and community service. She loved to have her family home for holiday celebrations and hosted her family for Sunday lunch for many years and recent years hosted Monday lunch for her family and friends.

She is survived by her children John H. Bryan Jr. and his wife Neville Frierson of Lake Bluff, Ill., Caroline Bryan Harrell and her husband Robert of West Point, Miss., George W. Bryan and wife Marcia Lavender of Memphis, and son-in-law Kenny Dill of West Point, Miss.; 19 grandchildren: Catherine Harrell Morehead, John Henry Bryan III, Francis Harrell Livesay, Margaret Bryan French, Beverly Harrell Luttrell, Caroline Harrell Atkins, Elizabeth Bryan Seebeck, Robert Donald Harrell Jr., Suzanne Bryan Sampietro, Mary Margaret Dill Case, George Wilkerson Bryan Jr., Helen Harrell Facella, Charles Frierson Bryan, Kenneth Dean Dill Jr., Nancy Cameron Bryan, Laura Bryan Williams, James Bryan Harrell, Sarah Catherine Dill and Caroline Dill Billups; and 39 great-grandchildren.

Pallbearers will be Mrs. Bryan's grandsons John H. Bryan III, Bob Harrell, Wilkes Bryan, Charles Bryan, Ken Dill Jr. and Bryan Harrell. Honorary Pallbearers are Jeanette Taylor, Betty Ervin, Jan Toftey, Tommie Lou O'Conner, Clyda Rent, Gloria Shelton, Tammi Armstrong and Ophelia Melton.

Visitation will be held by the family today from 5 p.m. to 7 p.m. at the First Presbyterian Church PCUSA at 604 E. Main St., in West Point, Miss.

Pastor Rita E. Cochrane will be officiating.

Jones

ROLLING FORK -- Memorial services and interment for William D. Jones, 57, of Rolling Fork, Miss., will be at a later date in Pace, Fla. He died July 19, 2002, of cancer at Greenwood-Leflore Hospital in Greenwood.

Mr. Jones was born Dec. 18, 1945, in Vicksburg, Miss. to Charles and Daisy Jones. He moved to Rolling Fork as a young man, where he has been a long-time resident. He has been involved in farming and catfish farming for many years in the Rolling Fork area.

He was preceded in death by his parents and sister, Alta Marie Jones.

He is survived by two daughters, Hope (Dwayne) Powers of Wayside, Miss., and Peggy (Kenny) Foster of Blaine, Miss.; one son, Mark (Christy) Jones of Rolling Fork, Miss.; one brother, Charles Jones Jr. of Pace, Fla.; two sisters, Doris Highsmith of Pace, Fla., and Nancy Thompson of Vicksburg, Miss.

Manor

GREENVILLE -- Funeral arrangements for Marie Manor, 68, of Greenville, are pending at Smith Funeral Home, Greenville. She died July 20, 2002, at her home in Greenville.

Scruggs

HOLLANDALE -- Funeral services for Nettie Watkins Scruggs, 87, of Hollandale, a cashier with Twin County Electric Association, will be at 11 a.m. today at the Boone Chapel in Hollandale, Miss. She died July 20, 2002, at The King's Daughters Hospital, Greenville, of heart failure. Burial will be in the Hollandale Cemetery, Hollandale, under the direction of Boone Funeral Home, Hollandale.

She was born in Noxubee County, Miss., moving to Hollandale, Miss., at an early age with her parents, where she graduated from Hollandale High School. She married Benjamin Wood Scruggs, who preceded her in death in 1974. She was employed with Twin County Electric Association from 1959 to 1980 as a cashier. She was a member of the Hollandale First United Methodist Church.

She leaves no immediate family.

The family will receive friends from 10:30 a.m. to 11 a.m. today at Boone Chapel in Hollandale, Miss.

Alexander

DUNCAN — Funeral services for Ella Alexander, 89, of Duncan will be Saturday at 11 a.m. at Sunrise MB Church, Duncan. He died Oct. 8, 2002, at Bolivar Medical Center, Cleveland. Burial will be in Sunrise Church Cemetery under the direction of Byas Funeral Home, Shelby.

Survivors include her daughter, Bessie Cage of Duncan; 11 grandchildren; 18 great-grandchildren; and one great-great-grandchild.

Visitation will be today from 2 to 6 p.m., with family hour from 6 to 7 p.m., at Byas Funeral Home, Shelby.

The Rev. Jerry Johnson will officiate.

Buckner

WINTERVILLE — Funeral arrangements for Geneva Buckner, 88, of Winterville are pending at Redmon Funeral Home, Greenville. She died Oct. 10, 2002, at her home.

Daniel

SUNFLOWER — Funeral services for Roosevelt "Pee Wee" Daniel, 50, of Sunflower will be Saturday at 1 p.m. at Baptist Grove MB Church, Sunflower. He died Oct. 4, 2002, in Forrest City, Ark. Burial will be in Willing Workers Cemetery, Sunflower, under the direction of Byas Funeral Home, Indianola.

Survivors include his wife, Alma Dunn Daniel of Sunflower; mother, Gertrude Daniel of Sunflower; two sons, Tony Brown of Burlington, Iowa, and Karvelt Brown of Isola; one daughter, Lavonda Brown of Memphis; four brothers, Jessie Daniel and Eddie Daniel, both of Sunflower, Sammie Foster of Belzoni and George Lee Daniel of Sacramento, Calif.; one sister, Annie Daniel Warfield of Sunflower.

Visitation will be today from 2 to 6 p.m. at Byas Funeral Home, Indianola

The Rev. James White will officiate.
