Shields

GREENVILLE — Funeral services for L.T. Shields, 77, of Greenville will be at 11 a.m. Saturday at Pilgrim Rest MB Church, Greenville. He died March 16, 2003, at The King's Daughters Hospital, Greenville. Burial will be in Lakewood Cemetery, Greenville, under the direction of Redmon Funeral Home, Greenville.

Mr. Shields was drafted in the United States Navy in 1944 and later married Mrs. Jessie Flemmings Shields. In this union, they were blessed with eight children. He was employed at Mann Tree Surgeon, Greenville Mill and Delta Regional Medical Center. He was retired. Mr. Shields was a member of Mt. Sinai Missionary Baptist Church, where he served faithfully as chairman of the Deacon Board and superintendent of the Sunday school. He was also a member of Queencity Lodge No. 23. He dearly loved his church, pastor and fellow church members. He was a devoted husband and father. He will be remembered for his devotion to his family and friends, as well as his tireless spirit of giving.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Mr. Robert Shields and Mrs. Lillie Edwards Shields; sisters Janie McQueen, Magnolia Bishop and Otha Lee Eiland; brothers Joe Shields, Walter Shields, Johnnie Shields, Don Shields, S.T. Shields and Robert Shields; and a grandson, Carnell Porter Jr.

He leaves to cherish his memories, a loving and devoted wife, Mrs. Jessie Shields of Greenville; three sons, Robert (Elsie) Shields of Boston, Mass., James (Rose) Shields of Memphis, Tenn., and Michael (Dezzerey) Shields of Tacoma, Wash.; five daughters, Jessie Lee (Woodrow) Sargent, Linda (Eugene) Summerville and Diane (Sammie) Henderson, all of Tacoma, and Carolyn (Frankie) Lewis and Bernita (Harrison) Edwards, both of Greenville; a special niece raised as a daughter, Charlotte Williams of Saginaw, Mich.; a special nephew raised as a son, Terry Flemmings of Inglewood, Calif.; a special blessing raised as a son, Tevin Carter of Greenville; two brothers, O.D. Shields of Louisville, Miss., and James Shields of Memphis; three sisters, Willie Mae Walker of Greenville, and Elizabeth Williams and Eliza Brown, both of Memphis; 41 grandchildren; 53 great-grandchildren; and a host of nieces, nephews and friends.

Visitation will be Friday from 1 to 5 p.m., with a family hour from 6 to 7 p.m., at Redmon Funeral Home chapel, Greenville.

Pastor A.M. Hines is pastor of the church. Pastor Ephen Melton will officiate.

Sikes

GREENVILLE — Funeral services for Annie Katherine Ware Sikes, 81, of Greenville, a homemaker, will be Friday at 10 a.m. at Card Funeral Home, Indianola. She died March 26, 2003, at The King's Daughters Hospital, Greenville. Burial will be in Greenville Cemetery.

She was a resident of Greenville for 53 years and a member of Second Baptist Church.

She was preceded in death by her husband, James Marvin Sikes; and a grandson, Jim Sikes.

Survivors include two daughters, Deborah Sikes Willoughby of Florence and Jamie Sikes Foley of Greenville; a son, Charles Ware Sikes of Indianola; two sisters, Sarah Ware Greenlee and Sue Ware Hoskins, both of Kilmichael; two brothers, Billy Ware and Harvey Ware, both of Kilmichael; and four grandchildren.

Visitation will be Friday from 9 to 10 a.m. at Card Funeral Home, Indianola.

Smith

HOLLANDALE — Visitation for Sam Smith, 90, of Chicago and formerly of Hollandale will be Friday at Sanders-Byas Funeral Home, Hollandale, from 2 to 2:30 p.m. He died March 22, 2003, at Community Hospital, East Chicago, Ill. Burial will follow visitation in Sanders Memorial Gardens, Hollandale.

Survivors include four daughters, Mamie L. Smith and Augustine Smith, both of Chicago, Ruth (Mose) Harris of Markham, Ill., and Ann Rita Smith of Indianapolis; three sons, Dr. Edgar E. (Inez) Smith of Jackson, Miss., Sam Smith Jr. of Gary, Ind., and Howard (Geraldean) Smith of Antioch, Tenn.; 12 grandchildren; 12 great-grandchildren; and one sister-in-law, Irma Smith of Joliet, Ill.

Thomas

ROLLING FORK — Funeral services for Josephine "Miss Jo" Thomas, 83, of Rolling Fork will be at noon Saturday at South Delta High School auditorium, Rolling Fork. She died March 22, 2003, at St. Dominic Hospital, Jackson. Burial will be in Green Chapel Cemetery, Rolling Fork, under the direction of Redmon Funeral Home, Greenville.

Mrs. Thomas was preceded in death by her husband, Littleton Thomas Sr.; a daughter, Rebecca Lake; a brother, J.W. Whitfield; and a sister, Willie Lee Butler.

Survivors include five sons, Samuel Giles of Rolling Fork, Alfred Lumpkins and Littleton Thomas Jr., both of Chicago, Spencer E. Thomas of Atlanta, Ga., and Robert E. Thomas of Beaumont, Texas; nine daughters, Lillie Mae Carr of Sallis, Virginia Turner of Chicago, Betty Reeves of Federal Way, Wash., Venary Nick of Lansing, Mich., Erma Moore of Rosedale, Beatrice Jernigan of Hollandale, Jo Ann Pope of Cleveland, Linda Barfield of Kansas City, Kan., and Katherine Caldwell of Vicksburg; a sister, Elizabeth Adams of Rolling Fork; a brother, Johnny C. Whitfield of Monticello; 38 grandchildren; and 25 great-grandchildren.

The remains will lie in state at South Delta High School auditorium Saturday from 10 a.m. to noon.

The Rev. J.H. Whitehead will officiate.

Waldrup

INDIANOLA — Funeral services for Betty Jean Nordan Waldrup, 69, of Indianola, a homemaker, will be today at 10 a.m. at Eastwood Baptist Church, Indianola. She died March 25, 2003, at South Sunflower County Hospital, Indianola. Burial will be in Indianola City Cemetery under the direction of Card Funeral Home, Indianola.

She was a member of Eastwood Baptist Church. She was preceded in death by a son, William Bruce "Billy" Waldrup.

Survivors include her husband, J.W. Waldrup; a daughter, Beverly Waldrup McCool of Indianola; and a brother, Earl Nordan of Blytheville, Ark.

Memorials may be made to Eastwood Baptist Church Building Fund or to a charity of the donor's choice.

Wells

DREW — Funeral services for Ethel Wells, 82, of Drew will be Friday at 11 a.m. at Christian Union Church, Drew. She died March 24, 2003, at Bolivar Medical Center, Cleveland. Burial will be in Drew Cemetery under the direction of Byas Funeral Home, Ruleville.

Survivors include three sons, Sammy Wells Jr. and Robert Wells, both of Chicago and Otha Wells of Parchman; two daughters, Thaethel Wells and Ruthie Wells, both of Chicago; 27 grandchildren; 29 great-grandchildren; and 10 great-great-grandchildren.

Visitation will be today from 2 to 6 p.m. at Byas Funeral Home, Ruleville.

The Rev. Anthony Pitts will officiate.

Whitehead

MOORHEAD — Funeral services for Beatrice Whitehead, 84, of Moorhead will be Saturday at 11 a.m. at Trinity House of Prayer, Moorhead. She died March 21, 2003, at her home. Burial will be in Pine Ridge Cemetery, Moorhead, under the direction of Dillon Funeral Home, Indianola.

Survivors include her daughter, Louise (James) Lewis of Moorhead; two grandchildren, Pamala (Elvis) James of Houston, Texas, and Kennis T. Lewis of Moorhead; and four great-grandchildren.

Visitation will be Friday from 1 to 5 p.m. at Dillon Funeral Home, Indianola.

The Rev. M.J. Dean will officiate.

Wright

TUPELO — Funeral services for Sammy Wiley "Sam" Wright Sr., 58, of Tupelo and formerly of Greenville will be today at 11 a.m. at Belden Baptist Church, Tupelo. He died after a sudden illness March 25, 2003, at North Mississippi Medical Center, Tupelo. Graveside services will be at 4:30 p.m. Thursday in Greenlawn Memorial Gardens, Greenville, under the direction of W.E. Pegues Funeral Directors, Tupelo.

Mr. Wright was born Sept. 5, 1944, in Greenville to the late Clarence Eli and Tera Langley Wright. He was a 1963 graduate of Greenville High School and was a U.S. Army veteran with service in 1968 and 1969 in the Vietnam War. He was retired after 30 years of service with Ford Motor Credit as a customer service supervisor. He was a member of Belden Baptist Church, where he was an active deacon, sang in the church choir and had served on several various church committees. He spent time in Greenville and Tupelo as a soccer coach with the park and recreation departments for 12 years. He enjoyed hunting, fishing and especially spending time with his family.

Survivors include his wife of 36 years, Julia Myrick Wright of Tupelo; one daughter, Holly Wright Boyd and her husband, Bill, of Tupelo; two sons, Sammy Wiley Wright Jr. and his wife, Emily Holt Wright of Birmingham, Ala., and Jonathan Myrick Wright of Tupelo; two sisters, Florine Wright Nichols of Leland and Tera Wright Cook of Searcy, Ark.; one brother, Neely Grant Wright of Greenville; two grandchildren, Taylor Boyd and Madeline Boyd; and numerous nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his daughter, Lori Ann Wright.

Memorials may be made to the Building By Faith Building Fund of Belden Baptist Church, P.O. Box 92, Belden, MS 38826.

Adams

MEMPHIS — Funeral arrangements for Audrey Adams, 79, of Memphis are pending at Redmon Funeral Home, Greenville. She died Jan. 30, 2002, at Methodist Central Hospital, Memphis.

Black

SHELBY — Funeral services for Jim Black Jr., 66, of Shelby will be Saturday at 11 a.m. at Shiloh MB Church, Shelby. He died Jan. 24, 2002, in Shelby. Arrangements are under the direction of Byas Funeral Home, Shelby.

Davis

CARY — Funeral services for Joseph Davis, 69, of Cary will be Sunday at noon at Guiding Star MB Church, Cary. He died Jan. 28, 2002, at Sharkey Issaquena Hospital, Rolling Fork. Burial will be in Cary Community Cemetery under the direction of Walker Funeral Home, Rolling Fork.

Survivors include his wife, Retha Davis of Cary; five sons, Joseph Shelley and Dwayne Davis, both of Cary, Freddie Shelley of Drew, Larry Davis of Greenwood and Micheal Davis of Lincoln, Neb.; five daughters, Rosie Davis of Rolling Fork, Janice Edison and Carla Davis, both of Cary, Lasonya Luckett of Atlanta, Ga., and Kimberly Luckett of Greenville; two brothers, John Davis of Rolling Fork and J.P. Powell of New Jersey; four sisters, Hattie Sanders and Rosie Stamps, both of Cary, Willie B. Williams of St. Petersburg, Fla., and Edna Davis of Memphis; 17 grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren.

Davis

INDIANOLA — Funeral services for Lee Davis, also known as Jake Brown, 77, of Indianola, a resident of Indianola Health and Rehabilitation Center, will be Saturday at 2 p.m. at St. John MB Church, Woodburn Community. He died Jan. 28, 2002, at South Sunflower County Hospital, Indianola. Burial will be in St. John Cemetery under the direction of Byas Funeral Home, Indianola.

Visitation will be today from 2 to 6 p.m. at the funeral home.

The Rev. Nona Mack will officiate.

Fairman

CLEVELAND — Funeral services for Luberta H. Fairman, 77, of Cleveland will be Saturday at 11 a.m. at United Baptist Church, Cleveland. She died Jan. 24, 2002, at Bolivar Health & Rehabilitation Center, Cleveland. Burial will be in Westlawn Cemetery, Cleveland, under the direction of Byas Funeral Home, Cleveland.

Survivors include two daughters, Alice Daniels of Burr Ridge, Ill., and Irma F. Parker of Cleveland; three sons, J.W. Fairman of Fresno, Calif., Johnny Fairman of Washington, D.C., and Jerenza Fairman of Cleveland, Miss.; three sisters, Jennie Simon and Elsie Bowers, both of Chicago, and Bessie Williams of St. Petersburg, Fla.; two brothers, Steve Holmes of Chicago and Ben Roberts of Youngstown, Ohio; 20 grandchildren; and seven great-grandchildren.

Visitation will be today from 2 to 6 p.m., with family hour from 7 to 9:30 p.m., at Byas Funeral Home, Cleveland. The body will lie in state Saturday from 10 to 11 a.m. at the church.

The Rev. Larry Hervey will officiate.
