Vassar

CLEVELAND — Funeral services for Estella Mobley Haynes Vassar, 101, of Cleveland will be Saturday at 4 p.m. at St. Peter's Rock MB Church, Cleveland. She died May 27, 2002, in Cleveland. Burial will be in Westlawn Memorial Cemetery, Cleveland, under the direction of Brinson Funeral Home, Cleveland.

One of Mississippi's oldest citizens died Monday at the age of 101 after her heart and lungs failed. She is survived by a sister, Mittie Mobley Guy, of Chicago, and some 80 grandchildren, great-grandchildren and great-great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her first husband, L.D. Haynes Sr.; and later by her second husband "Daddy" Mack Vassar; also preceding her in death just months ago were her sons Robert Wilson and L.D. Haynes Sr. Over the years, she was also preceded in death by her brothers J.C., T.C., M.C. and Frank and sisters Irene Mobley Whiting, Rosie Lee MacIntosh and Willie "Bill" Mobley. Her parents, Mittie Finter Mobley and Frank Mobley Sr., also preceded her in death.

Mrs. Vassar's surviving grandsons include: Lawrence, Charles, Terry, Samuel and Randy Haynes, all of Cleveland, Samuel Haynes of Bloomsburg, Pa., and Dennis Richardson of San Antonio, Texas; also, Willie, Pearce, Stephen, Robert and Jimmy Wilson, all of the Los Angeles, Calif., area. Surviving granddaughters include Malinda, Florida and Phyllis Haynes of Cleveland, Toni and Sandra Haynes of Houston, Texas, Jessie Haynes of Beaumont, Texas, and Ilona, Marva and Janelle Wilson all of the Los Angeles area. She is also survived by daughters-in-law Mae Wilson of Los Angeles and Winnie Haynes of Cleveland, and a goddaughter Ann Laurie Hutton, also of Cleveland.

Mrs. Vassar was born in Meridian, Miss., where she attended grammar school. Over the years, she lived in central Mississippi and finally settled in the Mississippi Delta at her home on Cross Street in Cleveland. She was a resident of Oak Grove Nursing Home in Duncan for more than a decade and most recently resided at the Bolivar Health & Rehabilitation Nursing in Cleveland. Mrs. Vassar was a member of the St. Phillips Church in Cleveland until her illness left her homebound some 15 years ago.

Known as Mrs. Estelle, she built her home with her own hands and was often seen repairing her roof, brick layering and even paving her driveway. She raised most of her food in a plush garden, canned her fruits, sewed, made hundreds of quilts and was the epitome of an independent woman after her husband "Daddy" Mack passed away in the 1960s.

She also helped to raise her grandchildren and sometimes great-grandchildren. She was driven to self-sufficiency after years of share cropping, but as her motto in life was "waste not, want not," she did not waste her first-hand knowledge of farming. In fact, she learned agricultural skills and took them with her as she made up her mind to leave behind her days of cotton-chopping and picking. She raised her own fruits and vegetables, even pecans. She sewed quilts, by machine and hand, never leaving a scrap of material to go unused. Mrs. Vassar would keep a deep freezer full of fresh greens, beans, okra, peas, tomatoes and other goodies from her garden. She made jams and jellies from her fruit trees and took their peelings from her pears, apples and plums and made a sweet Estelle wine. Nothing went to waste, not even a piece of gum if there was still sweetening to chew from it. She spent many of her last days of good health trying to pass on her pearls of wisdom to her grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

Her loved ones are encouraged that Mrs. Vassar's long-term illness has now released her into God's bosom of peace and rest.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be sent to the L.D. Haynes Memorial Scholarship Fund at P.O. Box 541, Cleveland, MS 38732.
