Terney

GREENWOOD -- Funeral services for Ethel Elizabeth Terney, 95, of Greenwood will be at 2 p.m. today at First United Methodist Church, Greenwood. She died Oct. 4, 2002, at Indywood Glen Retirement Home of heart failure. Interment will be at Evergreen Cemetery, North Carrollton, under the direction of Wilson & Knight Funeral Home, Greenwood.

Miss Terney was born Jan. 27, 1907, in Carrollton, Miss., the only daughter of James H. and Dessie Taylor Terney. Her father was mayor of the town of Carrollton from 1920 through 1935. Miss Terney received her education in Carrollton schools and in Price College of Business, after which she lived and worked in Greenwood her entire life. Her first employment in the 1930s was as a secretary with Quinn Drug Co. Later, she worked with the U.S. Government Office, Division of Finance of the WPA, and during World War II at the Greenwood Air Base. She served as a bookkeeper at Gulf Refining Co. from 1944 until the company moved its regional office from Greenwood in 1952. She was office manager of Hill Cotton Co. until 1957, at which time she began her long association with Delta Purchasing Federation, remaining there until her retirement in 1978.

After official retirement, being vitally interested in the business and political life of Greenwood and Mississippi, Miss Terney continued to be involved in community affairs. Known to be a loyal, dedicated and energetic worker, and fond of people of all walks of life, she was appointed by longtime friend Judge Gray Evans to serve as a bailiff in the Circuit Court, District 4, Leflore County. To hold this position, it was necessary that she be sworn in as a deputy sheriff, and she proudly carried her badge in her handbag at all times. At election times, she was a poll worker at the courthouse precinct. For many years, she was a tireless campaign worker for friends involved in political races in Leflore and Washington counties, and even on the state and national levels. She was an enthusiastic member of the J.Z. George Chapter of the United Daughters of the Confederacy. Failing health demanded that she step down from these activities.

Miss Terney was a lifelong Methodist, and throughout her life was devoted to activities of the First United Methodist Church of Greenwood. Having worked in the Primary Department of the Sunday school in her early years, she later became a member of the Sis Taylor Class for adults. She worked for a number of years with Mr. and Mrs. George Pillow as sponsor of the Methodist Youth Fellowship, which met on Sunday evenings. As a member of the Wesleyan Service Guild and study group, she was ardent in that organization's evangelistic efforts in the community, especially visiting the hospitalized and homebound. In addition to being a member of Circle Eight and the church sewing guild, she also served on the Kitchen Committee, serving hot breakfasts to Senior Citizens. It is widely known in Greenwood that, in addition to ministering through her church activities, she spent every day helping someone out in many "little, nameless, unremembered acts of kindness and love."

Known for her handwork, Miss Terney was constantly working on something beautiful to give away. Her fingers were never idle. She was an expert in the ancient form of lace making known as "tatting," which has become a lost art. She kept and used some of the same ivory shuttle that was given to her by her grandmother, who taught her art as a small child.

Although she never married or had a family of her own, she was beloved by countless children and adults who affectionately called her "Auntie." Her friends and family recognized in her the qualities of fierce loyalty and steadfast devotion. She always saw the good in everyone, and perfectly exemplified the Christian value of "unconditional love."

Miss Terney was preceded in death by three brothers, James H. Terney Jr., Champ Taylor Terney and Joseph Leo Terney; a nephew, Champ Taylor Taylor Jr.; and a great-niece, Taylor P. Terney. She is survived by nieces, Mrs. Clarke D. Bishop of Greenwood, Mrs. Charles Wilkerson of Meridian and Mrs. Randolph Sommer of Gulf Shores, Ala.; nephews, Philip Baird Terney of Greenville, Joe Terney Jr. of Foley, Ala., and Mark and Michael Terney of Clarksdale; 11 great-nieces and great-nephews; and 12 great-great-nieces and great-great-nephews. She also leaves her devoted friend, Mary Dent Deaton of Greenwood, and a godchild, Mrs. Diane Deaton Rossi of Alexandria, Va.

Visitation will be at 1 p.m. today in the First United Methodist Church parlor.

The Rev. Glenn Seefeld will officiate, with the Rev. Craig R.H. Gates assisting.

The following friends will serve as pallbearers: Charles M. Deaton, Dr. Michael T. Boler, Dr. David L. Merideth, Dr. Philip T. Merideth, Percy Steven and Taylor Vickery. Honorary pallbearers will be the Honorable D. Gray Evans (Patricia), the Rev. Glen Miller (Joann) and the Rev. A.W. Meadows (Sybill).
