Melvin Hampton Sr.

Melvin Hampton Sr., 77, of McComb, died April 11, 2009, at St. Dominic Hospital in Jackson.

Visitation is 11 a.m. Saturday at Rose Hill Free Will Baptist Church until services there at 1 p.m. Bishop Robert Thompson, pastor, and Elder John Bates, assistant pastor, will officiate. Burial will be in Upper Pleasant Grove Baptist Church Cemetery. Cook’s Enterprise Funeral Home in McComb is in charge of arrangements.

Mr. Hampton was born March 25, 1932, in Pike County, to Quincy and Ruth Hampton.

He retired from Croft Metals and the Enterprise-Journal and was a U.S. veteran of the Korean War. He was a devoted deacon of Rose Hill Free Will Baptist Church, where he served as chairman of the deacon board, chaplain of the male chorus and was a member of the pastor’s support ministry and the mission.

Mr. Hampton was preceded in death by his parents; his wife of 43 years, Elaine P. Hampton; a son, Kenneth Hampton; a daughter, JoAnn Wells; and a grandchild.

Survivors include two daughters and sons-in-law, Jacqueline Anderson and Marcus, and Barbara Turner and Theophus, all of McComb; a son, Melvin Hampton Jr. of McComb; a sister, Ruth Simmons of Fernwood; one aunt, Lily Sarah Talbert of McComb; three adopted children, Zelphia Turner and Ray C. Perkins, both of McComb, and Katrina Perkins of Rochester, N.Y.; 15 grandchildren; 26 great-grandchildren; two devoted grandchildren, Stephanie Brown of McComb and Tokeya Butler of Tangipahoa, La.; and a host of other relatives and friends.

Ouida Thompson

Ouida Estella Moak Thompson, 97, of Smithfield, N.C., died there April 17, 2009, at Smithfield Manor.

Visitation was 5 to 7 p.m. Sunday at Underwood Funeral Home in Smithfield. Local visitation is 1 to 2 p.m. Tuesday at Catchings Funeral Home in McComb, followed by graveside services in Hollywood Cemetery.

She was born March 4, 1912, in Pike County. She was the daughter of the late Rufus Levi and Courtney Herrington Moak.

She was the widow of Jewell Bickham Thompson, who died in 1983.

Survivors include two sons, James Bickham Thompson of Smithfield and Lee Moak Thompson of Lexington, Ky.; two brothers, James E. Moak of Starkville and Robert Louie Moak of Bossier City, La.; a sister, Ester Lee Jackson of McComb; five grandchildren and a great-grandson.

In lieu of flowers, the family asks that memorial donations be made to a church or charity of choice.

Maxine H. Cox

Maxine Hadwin Cox, 85, of Baton Rouge, died April 20, 2009, at her residence.

Arrangements are incomplete with Greenoaks Funeral Home of Baton Rouge.

Survivors include a son, Steve Cox of McComb. Other details were not available.

Hugh F. Statham

Hugh Frank “H.F.” Statham, 90, of McComb, died April 19, 2009, of heart failure.

Visitation is from noon today at Jones Family Funeral Services in McComb, until graveside services at 2 p.m. in Hollywood Cemetery. The Rev Ed Sudduth will officiate.

Mr. Statham was born July 22, 1918, in Fernwood. He was the son of the late James Bob and Willie Quin Statham.

He graduated from Fernwood High School in 1935. He continued his education at Southwest Mississippi Junior College, Mississippi State University, the University of Tennessee and the University of Texas. He served in the U.S. Navy during World War II. He was a longtime member of Sincerity Lodge No. 214 in Magnolia, serving as Worshipful Master several times. He was one of the oldest members of Fernwood Methodist Church.

After leaving the service, Mr. Statham worked as a loftsman at Ingalls Shipyard in Pascagoula. He later moved back to Fernwood and managed the plywood plant for Fernwood Industries. He also taught mechanical technology at Copiah-Lincoln Community College in Wesson, and retired from Croft Metals as a tool and dye maker.

Mr. Statham was preceded in death by his parents; his wife of 60 years, Altha Williams Statham; two brothers, James and Charles of Jackson; and one sister, Janie Gibson of Collins.

Survivors include one son and daughter-in-law, Gary and Belenda Statham of Brookhaven; a daughter and son-in-law, Sandra and Ed Coker of McComb; one grandson, Bobby Coker of McComb; two grand-daughters, Christie and husband James Harry Thompson Jr. of Picayune, and Brandy and husband Chris Smith of Brookhaven; and two great-grandchildren, Cameron and Gracie Smith of Brookhaven.

Pallbearers will be Bobby Coker, James Harry Thompson, Chris Smith, Richard Wright, James Statham and Ronnie Statham.

Ruby Mae Lea

Ruby Mae Lea, 95, of Sontag, died April 19, 2009, at Lawrence County Nursing Center in Monticello.

Services were 11 a.m. today at Shiloh Baptist Church in Sontag, with the Rev. Andy Fullington officiating. Burial is in the church cemetery. Wilson Funeral Home in Monticello is in charge of arrangements.Mrs. Lea was born April 1, 1914, in Copiah County to William Morgan Chance and Esther Hall Chance.

She was a retired cattle farmer and homemaker. She was a member of Shiloh Baptist Church.

Mrs. Lea was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Callie Curtis “Curt” Lea; one daughter, Madge McManus; four brothers, Aubrey, Denver, Buford and Curtis Chance; one sister, Sybil Kinchen; one grandchild and one great-grandchild.

Survivors include two sons, Curtis Glen Lea and Ronnie Lea, both of Sontag; one daughter, Faye Frankenhiem of Sontag; one sister, Kathryn Moore of Jackson; eight grandchildren and 11 great-grandchildren.

Maxine H. Cox

Maxine Hadwin Cox, 85, of Baton Rouge, died April 20, 2009, at her residence.

Visitation will be 5 to 8 tonight and 8 a.m. Wednesday until 10 a.m. services at Greenoaks Funeral Home, 9595 Florida Blvd., Baton Rouge. The Rev. Donald Dick will officiate. Burial will be in Greenoaks Memorial Park.

She was a native of Claiborne Parish, La., daughter of Andrew and Sally Hadwin.

She graduated from Lisbon High School, where she was homecoming queen her senior year, and attended Louisiana Tech. She had been a resident of Baton Rouge since 1957.

Her family said she was a loving and caring mother and supported her sons in their sporting activities. She was an avid bridge player, artist, and enjoyed traveling. She especially enjoyed spending time with family and friends at their camp at Toledo Bend Lake.

She was preceded in death by her parents and a sister, Louise Smith.

Survivors include her husband of 65 years, Dr. Lawson Glynn Cox of Baton Rouge; two sons and daughters-in-law, Michael and Sharon Cox of Bossier City, La., and Steve and Robbi Cox of McComb; four grandchildren, Kelli Brock and husband James of McComb, Jason Cox of Tulsa, Okla., Melissa Cox of Baton Rouge and Rachal Cox of Bossier City; two step-granddaughters, Rhonda Grider and Tracy Coco, both of Bossier City; and four great-grandchildren.

Pallbearers will be Bill Cox, Bryce Cox, Bobby Cox, Carl Cox, James Brock and Brian Brock. Honorary pallbearers are Bob Quinnley and Glenn Sanders.

James E. Butler

James E. Butler, 83, of McComb, died April 16, 2009, at his residence.

Visitation will be 11 a.m. Thursday at St. Mary Free Will Baptist Church, until services there at 1 p.m. Elder James Banks, pastor, will officiate. Burial will be in Pike Memorial Gardens. Cook’s Enterprise Funeral Home in McComb is in charge of arrangements.

He was born June 26, 1925, in Pike County to Mary Garner and John Jackson.

He was retired. He was a World War II Navy veteran, seaman first class from 1943-45. He retired after 40 years of service as a stockman for Illinois Central Gulf Railroad (Northern Division).

As a child he attended Collins Grove Elementary School. He was part of the labor force involved in the building of McComb High School.

Mr. Butler was preceded in death by his parents, eight brothers and two sisters.

Survivors include his wife of 58 years, Ouida Wilson Butler of McComb; two daughters, Gail Thompson of Chicago and Rita Royal of Jackson; three sons and one daughter-in-law, Garland R. Butler and Irene of Miami, Richard Butler of Indiana and Robin Butler of Nashville, Tenn.; six granddaughters, four grandsons, eight great-grandchildren; two sisters-in-law, Diane Wilson of McComb and Grace Butler of Summit; and a host of other relatives and friends.

Sharon Ann Pevey

Sharon Ann Pevey, 59, of Jayess, died April 19, 2009, at St. Dominic Hospital in Jackson.

Visitation will be 5 to 9 tonight at Wilson Funeral Home in Monticello. Services will be 11 a.m. Wednesday at New Hope Baptist Church, Monticello. Dr. Joey Faulk will officiate. Burial will be in the church cemetery.

Mrs. Pevey was born Feb. 12, 1950, in Tylertown. She was the daughter of the late Jere Thames and the late Nonnie Nelson Thames.

She was a retired dispatcher with Wal-Mart Distribution Center and was a member of New Hope Baptist Church.

Survivors include her husband, Ronnie Pevey of Jayess; two sons and one daughter-in-law, Jason and Casey Pevey of Jayess, and Matthew Pevey of San Francisco; one daughter and son-in-law, Dana and Chad White of Jayess; one brother, Phillip Thames of Jayess; four sisters, Brenda Rutland and Joy Brister, both of Jayess, Gerry Sanders of Byram and Joan Dear of Monticello; and five grandchildren.

Larry R. Nichols

Larry R. Nichols, 45, of Houston, Texas, died April 16, 2009, at his residence.

Visitation will be 7 to 9 p.m. Friday at St. John Baptist Church in Houston. Services will be noon Saturday at the church, with the Rev. Alex Morrison officiating. Carl Barnes Funeral Home in Houston is in charge of arrangements.

Mr. Nichols was born April 20, 1963, in Fernwood. He was the son of Ola Mae Nichols of Fernwood and the late Willie Nichols Sr.

He attended South Pike public schools and later moved to Houston.

Mr. Nichols was preceded in death by his wife, Theresa C. Nichols; his father; two brothers, Willie Nichols Jr. and Roy Lee Nichols.

Survivors include his mother; one son, Larry T. Nichols Jr. of Houston; one daughter, Larysa Chardae Nichols of Houston; six sisters and five brothers-in-law, Doris E. Herring of Brookhaven, Jeanette Jackson and Randy, and Norma Jackson and Robert, all of McComb, Willie Mae Magee and Paul, Helen Burris and Jake, and Mary LittleJohn and Gene, all of Chicago; five brothers and two sisters-in-law, James Nichols and Debra of Cedar Park, Texas, Bernard Nichols, Charles Nichols, and L.J. Nichols and Mary, all of McComb, and Clifton Nichols of Magnolia; and a host of nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.

James D. Dewett

James Doyle Dewett, 75, of McComb, died April 20, 2009, at G.V. “Sonny” Montgomery V.A. Medical Center in Jackson.

Visitation is 8:30 to 10:30 a.m. Thursday at Hartman-Sharkey Funeral Home in McComb. Graveside services will be 11 a.m. in Hollywood Cemetery, with the Rev. Donald Dick officiating.
