Ralph 'Rod’ Willis Davis

Coach Ralph “Rod” Willis Davis, 93, of Alexander City, Ala., died there July 8, 2007, at Bill Nichols Veterans Home.

Graveside services were 11:30 a.m. Tuesday in Alexander City Cemetery. Radney Funeral Home in Alexander City was in charge of arrangements.

Coach Davis was born May 16, 1914, in Tallapoosa County to Sherwood and Dila Boone Davis.

He served in the U.S. Navy during World War II and played third base for the U.S. Navy Baseball Team. He graduated from Southeastern Louisiana University and received his master’s degree from the University of Mississippi.

He played and coached at Southwest Mississippi Community College, where he was later enshrined into the Sports Hall of Fame. After returning from World War II, he was the football coach from 1946 to 1951 at Summit High School.

He went on to coach baseball and football at Miami Senior High School for 30-plus years, winning city and state championships. The City of Miami declared a “Coach Ralph Davis Day.” A number of his baseball players have gone on to play professional baseball. Mr. Davis was a member of the 1965 Miami Senior High School football staff, whose team won the National High School Football Championship. He was also inducted into the Florida Sports Hall of Fame.

Mr. Davis was a Baptist by faith and served many years as a deacon at First Baptist Church of Miami. He also enjoyed playing golf.

Survivors include one nephew, Don G. Holley of Alexander City; three nieces, Peggy Evans and Cheryl Blackwell, both of Alexander City, and Nancy Nelson of Indian Springs, Ala.; and a host of other nieces and nephews.

JAMES WILLIE MCGHEE

James Willie “Jake-Paw Paw” McGhee, 82, of Magnolia, died July 23, 2007, at Beacham Memorial Hospital.

Visitation is 1 to 6 p.m. Friday at Young’s Funeral Home in Summit. Services are 1 p.m. Saturday at Jones Chapel Church of God in Christ, with Elder Alfa Wilson officiating. Burial will be in the church cemetery.

Mr. McGhee was born Dec. 17, 1924, in Pike County to Henry and Ella Allen McGhee.

He joined Sherman Missionary Baptist Church at an early age and later joined Jones Chapel C.O.G.I.C. under the leadership of Elder Sam Jones and remained there until his death. He accepted Christ in his life at an early age. He showed love to his family and friends.

Mr. McGhee was preceded in death by his parents; his first wife, Lou Ella Kennedy McGhee; his second wife, Myrtis L. Broadway McGhee; a daughter, Bessie Cook; a son, Charles Reed; and two brothers, T.H. McGhee and Willie “Pap” McGhee.

Survivors include five daughters and three sons-in-law, Gloria and Johnny Cook, Etha and Jimmy Lee, Rochyn Magee, and Deborah and Donnie Lacking, all of Magnolia, and Dolly Reed of McComb; five sons, Willie Reed, Samuel Reed and James Magee, all of Magnolia, Ray Magee and his wife June, and Louis Magee, all of McComb; three brothers and sisters-in-law, Elder Otis and Earnestine Magee, Henry and Georgia McGhee, and William and Patrica Magee, all of Magnolia; two sisters, Alma Jones and her husband Sam, and Erma Robertson, all of Magnolia; 38 grandchildren, 42 great-grandchildren and three great-great-grandchildren, all of Magnolia, and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins and friends.

NATHAN C. CUTRER

Nathan Christopher Cutrer, infant son of Christopher and Elizabeth Cutrer of Kentwood, La., and formerly of McComb, died on the day of his birth, July 21, 2007, at Woman’s Hospital in Baton Rouge.

Visitation is 9 a.m. Friday at McKneely Funeral Home in Kentwood until services there at noon. The Rev. James Sanders will officiate. Burial will be in Woodland Cemetery in Kentwood.

Nathan was preceded in death by a brother, Christian L. Cutrer and grandfather, Murray Travis.

Survivors include his parents; a brother, Anthony Travis of Kentwood; grandparents, Jimmy and Tina Dykes and Mildred Cutrer, all of Kentwood, and Juanita Travis of McComb; and many other friends and family including a special friend, Wanda Royals.

BYRON ERICK CLEAVES JR.

Byron Erick Cleaves Jr., 11, of Oceanside, Calif., died July 23, 2007, from injuries sustained after the go-cart in which he was riding collided with a vehicle on a Walthall County road.

Visitation is 6 to 9 tonight at Ginn Funeral Home in Tylertown. Services are 11 a.m. Monday at United Missionary Baptist Church in Chicago, with the Rev. Wilson Daniels officiating. Burial will be in Oakridge Cemetery in Hillside, Ill.

Byron was born Oct. 9, 1995, in Chicago. He was the son of Yashica Grear Simmons and the Rev. Steven Simmons of Oceanside, and Byron Erick Cleaves Sr. of Chicago.

He was a seventh-grade student and of the Baptist faith. He had a third degree yellow belt in Tae Kwon Do, and was a member of Camp Pendleton Junior Golf Academy. He played little league with the Phillies Baseball Team, Dolphins Football Team and Knicks Basketball Team.

Byron was preceded in death by his grandmother, Ruby Cleaves; and an aunt, Felecia Amelia Simmons.

Survivors include his parents; grandmothers, Susie Grear of Chicago and Nellie Simmons of Tylertown; two sisters, Amaya Jazlyn Simmons of Oceanside and Brooklyn Sinclaire Cleaves of Chicago; two brothers, Christopher Garret Cleaves of Chicago and Sheldon Alexander Simmons of Arlington, Texas; and a host of aunts, uncles, cousins and friends.

Pallbearers are Keith Edwards, Kenan Weekly, Billy Glass and Marcus Wright, all of Chicago. Honorary pallbearers are Christopher Garret Cleaves, Darryl Cleaves, Davelle Grear, Ivan Grear, Ronald Quinn, Darryl Quinn and Yego Quinn, all of Chicago, and the Rev. Steven Simmons.

FARRELL SANFORD

Farrell Sanford, 74, of Tylertown, died July 26, 2007, at his home.

Arrangements are incomplete at Capps Funeral Home of Tylertown.

Frankie Forman

Mrs. Frankie Forman, 73, of Gloster, died July 25, 2007, at St. Dominic Hospital in Jackson.

Visitation is 6 to 9 p.m. Friday at Brown Funeral Home in Gloster. Services are scheduled for 10 a.m. Saturday at a location to be determined.

VIRGINIA CASTON KIRKLAND

Virginia Caston Kirkland, 80, a lifetime resident of Liberty, died July 15, 2007, at Liberty Community Living Center.

Visitation is 6 to 9 tonight at Brown Funeral Home in Liberty and continues at 9 a.m. Tuesday at Bethel Baptist Church, Highway 569 south of Liberty, until services there at 10 a.m. Dr. Ron Kirkland, the Rev. James Sadler and the Rev. Dusty Rhodes will officiate. Burial will be in Bethel Cemetery.

Mrs. Kirkland was born Sept. 28, 1926, in Liberty, to Charles Leon and Euna Bell Smith Caston.

She worked as a seamstress and later worked in Quality Control with Kellwood Co. in Fernwood.

Mrs. Kirkland was preceded in death by her husband of 47 years, Benton L. Kirkland; a daughter, Patsy Diane Boykin; two brothers, Wesley Caston and Billy Jack Caston; and an infant sister.

Survivors include four children, Brenda Harvey and her husband Early of Orange Beach, Ala., Dr. Ron Kirkland and his wife Sue of West Memphis, Ark., James “Jimbo” Kirkland of Liberty and Vicki Hays of Covington, La.;14 grandchildren; 26 great-grandchildren; two brothers, James Caston, and Brent Caston and his wife Peggy, all of Liberty; a sister, Judy Seale and her husband Louis of Liberty; and numerous nieces and nephews.

CHARLES J. TAYLOR

Charles J. Taylor, 78, a lifelong resident of Amite County, died July 14, 2007, at McComb Nursing and Rehabilitation Center. Arrangements are incomplete with Brown Funeral Home in Gloster in charge.

JOYCE NELL RAYBORN MCGUIRE

Joyce Nell Rayborn McGuire, 72, of the Enon community in Walthall County, died July 14, 2007, at her residence after a lengthy illness.

Visitation is 5 to 8 tonight at Catchings Funeral Home in McComb and continues 9 a.m. Tuesday at Enon Baptist Church until services there at 10 a.m. The Rev. David Hedden will officiate. Burial will be in the church cemetery.

Mrs. McGuire was born Jan. 14, 1935, in Walthall County, to Charlie and Ola Dunaway Rayborn of Enon.

She was a longtime resident of Enon and was a member of Enon Baptist Church. She was a loving wife, mother, grandmother and great-grandmother.

Mrs. McGuire was preceded in death by her parents; two brothers, Ottis and Marlin Rayborn, both of Enon; and a son-in-law, Joe Dunaway of Baton Rouge.

Survivors include her husband, Michael McGuire of Enon; a son, Frankie Roberts and his wife Belinda of Enon; two daughters, Beverly Smith and her husband Tony of Denham Springs, La., and Cindy Dunaway of Baton Rouge; a sister-in-law, Mary Rayborn of Enon; six grandchildren, eight great-grandchildren and numerous nieces, nephews and other relatives.

Pallbearers are Shannon Boyd, Michael Johnston, Lance Dunaway, Kelvin Rayborn, Robbie McCullough and Chris McCullough.

LOUISE ROBERTSON

Louise Robertson, 93, of McComb, died July 16, 2007, at McComb Nursing and Rehab.

Arrangements are incomplete with Cook’s Enterprise Funeral Home in McComb in charge.

RAY E. MCGEHEE

Ray Everette McGehee, 84, of Baton Rouge and formerly of Franklin County, died July 14, 2007, at his home in Baton Rouge.

Visitation is 5 to 9 tonight at Hartman Funeral Home of McComb and 8 a.m. Tuesday until services there at 10 a.m. The Rev. Joey Barnard will officiate. Burial will be in Mount Olive Baptist Church Cemetery in Smithdale.

Mr. McGehee was born Sept. 16, 1922, in Franklin County. He was the son of Elijah Cain and Lourettie Williams.

He graduated from Tulane University in 1948 and served in the U.S. Army Air Force from 1942 to 1952 as a technical engineer during World War II and the Korean War. He received the distinguished Flying Cross Medal for courageous actions during the battle of Normandy.

He retired from Kaiser Aluminum in 1983.

Mr. McGehee was preceded in death by his parents; three brothers, Vernon Cain, Floyd Eugene and Harris Odell McGehee; and four sisters, Eloise McGehee Cotton, Mary Alys McGehee, Nell McGehee Crecink and Joyce McGehee.

Survivors include his longtime friend, Francis Politz; and several nieces and nephews, especially, Rebecca McGehee Savoie, Thomas McGehee, Rodney, Floyd and Dennis McGehee, Linda Crecink Palmer and Royce Crecink.

Pallbearers will be Travis Perk, Vern McGehee, Brett McGehee, Rod McGehee, Troy McGehee and Patrick McGehee.

SAM L. ROBERTS JR.

Sam L. Roberts Jr., 69, of Port Gibson, died July 14, 2007, at his residence.

Visitation will be 10 a.m. Tuesday at Port Gibson United Methodist Church until memorial services there at 11 a.m. The Rev. David Harrison will officiate. Burial will be in Wintergreen Cemetery in Port Gibson at a later date. Glenwood Funeral Home in Port Gibson is in charge of arrangements.

Mr. Roberts was born Aug. 27, 1937, in Liberty. He was the son of Sam L. Roberts Sr. and Norma Lea Roberts.

He attended Millsaps College and graduated from Mississippi State University. He was a member of Kappa Sigma Fraternity. He had been a resident of Port Gibson for the past 45 years and was a member of the Army National Guard.

He was a founding member of the Mosswood Country Club and was an avid golfer. He was a former president of the Port Gibson Lions Club.

Mr. Roberts was materials manager for Entergy, retiring in 1997. He was a member of Port Gibson United Methodist Church.

Mr. Roberts was preceded in death by his wife, Susan Wheeless Roberts, and his parents.

Survivors include one son, Sam L. Roberts III of Baton Rouge; two daughters, Susan Roberts McCaa of Gulf Shores, Ala., and Leslie Case of Port Gibson; a brother, James Roberts of Liberty; two sisters, Sylvia Miller and Leslie Taylor, both of Liberty; and two grandchildren, Alan McCaa of Gulf Shores and Landon Case of Port Gibson.

Memorials may be made to Port Gibson United Methodist Church.

AUGUST MILTON ITAL

August Milton Ital, 79, a longtime resident of Gloster, died July 16, 2007, at G.V. “Sonny” Montgomery Veterans Administration Medical Center in Jackson.

Arrangements are incomplete with Brown Funeral Home in Gloster in charge.
