Betty J. Moak

Betty Jean Thames Moak, 75, of McComb, died Feb. 20, 2008, at St. Dominic Memorial Hospital in Jackson.

Visitation was 11 a.m. Saturday at Jones Family Funeral Services in McComb until services there at 2 p.m., with the Rev. James Ray Lawrence officiating. Burial will be in Moak’s Creek cemetery with the Rev. Melanie Lemburg officiating.

Mrs. Moak’s survivors included a sister, Doris Moon of Phoenix, Ariz., who was omitted from a list of survivors in Thursday’s Enterprise-Journal.

Florence Hattie Mathis

Florence Hattie Mathis, 71, of Centreville, died Feb. 22, 2008, at Field Memorial Hospital in Centreville.

Visitation is today from 11 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. at Newman Funeral Home in Centreville, with graveside service at 1 p.m. at Messenger Family Cemetery with Bro. Donald Flemming officiating.

Mrs. Mathis was born Oct. 13, 1936, in Woodville, the daughter of Charles Messenger Sr. and Nita McCurley Messenger. She was a homemaker and was of the Baptist faith.

She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, R.W. Mathis; a daughter, Debra Fleming; one sister and four brothers.

Survivors include three daughters, Brenda Sue Durham and granddaughter Courtney Durham, both of Denham Springs, La., Florence Garig of Norwood, La., and Faith Blackard of Jackson, La.; two sisters,

Rose Farrar and Ann Cabarrubia both of Liberty; a special friend, Merle Lee Wilson; other great neighbors, numerous nieces, nephews and friends.

Edna Earl Simpson

Edna Earl “Granny” Simpson, 80, of Centreville, died Fed. 22, 2008, at Wilkinson County Health Care Center in Centreville.

Visitation is 4 to 7 p.m. today at Newman Funeral Home in Centreville, and Monday from 11 a.m. until services at the funeral home at 2 p.m. with the Rev. James Saddler and the Rev. Rodney Sessions officiating. Burial will be in Oaklawn Cemetery in Centreville.

Mrs. Simpson was born Aug. 22, 1927, in Amite County, the daughter of Emmette Watkin and Mattie Terilla Smith Kirkland. She was a seamstress at the William Carter Co. in Centreville and enjoyed fishing, gardening and spending time with her family.She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Lonnie T. Simpson; three brothers, Aubrey, Robert and Wallace Kirkland; and two grandchildren, Clifton Randall Simpson and April Renee Simpson.

Survivors include four daughters and sons-in-law, Glenda and Ronnie Sessions of Petal, Pat and James Coghland of Zachary, La., Barbara and Jeff McDaniels and Gail and Rick Kimery, all of Centreville; two sons and daughters-in-law, Randy and Christine Simpson of Ruth, and Jimmy and Lori Simpson of Centreville; one sister, Barbara Tessier of Liberty; 16 grandchildren; 17 great-grandchildren; and one great-great-grandchild.

Pallbearers are Mathew Simpson, Ricky Simpson, Rocky McDaniels, Josh Simpson, Marlin Kimery, Roddy Sessions, Rusty McDaniels, Justin Simpson, Mickey Garig and Patrick Kimery.

Honorary pallbearers are Rhonda Gregg, Robbie Sellers, Michelle Melton, Amanda Davis, Kelly Simpson and Tesha Burt.

Gladys Irene Barber

Gladys Irene Barber, 83, of Bogalusa, La., died Feb. 21, 2008, at Southwest Mississippi Regional Medical Center in McComb.

Visitation was Saturday from 5 to 9 p.m. at Hartman-Hughes Funeral Home in Tylertown, and today at Stateline Pentecostal Church from 1 p.m. until services there at 2 p.m. with the Revs. George Ridge, Terry Ballard and Kevin Cox officiating. Burial will be in Stateline Cemetery.

Mrs. Barber was born March 5, 1924, in Walthall County, the daughter of the late Tom J. and Lena Rebecca Dillon Travis. She was a homemaker.

She was preceded in death by her parents; husband Obie Barber; one son, Huette Alfy Barber; and one granddaughter, Teressa Worthy.

Survivors include two sisters, Melba Elizabeth Carlisle of Hollywood, Fla., and Hulene Givens of Magnolia; two brothers, Thomas Lynn Travis of McComb, and the Rev. Glen Ray Travis of Jackson; two granddaughters, Leisa Newman and Tammy Barber, both of Vicksburg; one grandson, Huette “Chip” Barber of Monroe, La.; seven great-grandchildren; and five great-great-grandchildren.

Pallbearers will her nephews, Ray Carlisle Jr., Norman Dwayne Givens, David Lynn Travis, Thomas Bradley Travis, Donald R. Travis and Gary Travis.

Louise R. Stockton

Timmie Louise Reid Stockton, 86, a longtime resident of McComb Extended Care, died Feb. 23, 2008, at Beacham Memorial Hospital.

Visitation is today from 5 to 8 p.m. at Jones Family Funeral Services in McComb, and Monday at Enon Baptist Church from 9 a.m. until services there at 11a.m. with the Rev. David Hadden, the Rev. Rick Kennedy and Bro. James Quinn officiating. Burial will be in Enon cemetery.

Mrs. Stockton was born Aug. 9, 1921, in Walthall County, the daughter of John Thomas and Inis Tullos Reid. She was a retired supervisor with Kellwood Co., and worked as dorm manager of the boys dormitory at Southwest Mississippi Junior College. She was a longtime member of Enon Baptist Church.

She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband of nearly 60 years, Marvin Stockton; a daughter-in-law, Jo Ann Stockton of Natchez; three brothers, Troy Reid, Talmadge Reid and Tyson Reid; and five sisters, Trinnie Dunaway, Trudy Mullens, Tressie Rand, Thelma Smith and Theda Reid.

Survivors include one son, Thomas “Brother” Stockton of Natchez; two daughters and sons-in-law, Peggy and Billy Moak of Baker, La., and Diane and Hewitt McCullough of the Enon community; eight grandchildren, William Moak, Susan Nealy and husband Ed, Traci Watts and husband Kevin, Janette Jobe and husband Clifton, Thomas Stockton Jr. and wife Melody, Amy Smith, Michelle Durham and Troy McCullough; 11 great-grandchildren; one great-great-grandchild; special friends, Nancy and Billy Walley of McComb, Shelton and Sissy Whittington of Pricedale, Lane and Debbie Ball of Summit, and the McComb Extended Care staff and numerous nieces and nephews.

Pallbearers are Billy Walley, Lane Ball, Terry Boyd, James Bracey, Justin Boyd and Jerry Cothern.

Honorary pallbearers are Robert Stockton, Shelton Whittington, Louis Huhn and Jerry Moak.

Lamar Alford Williams

Lamar Alford Williams, 81, of Bogue Chitto, died Feb. 21, 2008, at the University of Mississippi Medical Center in Jackson.

Visitation will be 5 to 8 p.m. Saturday at Jones Family Funeral Services in McComb. Visitation will be 2 p.m. Sunday at Pleasant Hill Baptist Church in Bogue Chitto until services there at 3 p.m. The Revs. Talmadge Smith, Floyd Higginbotham and Larry Russell will officiate. Burial will be in the Moak Cemetery on Shady Grove Drive in Bogue Chitto.

Mr. Williams was born March 6, 1926, to Robert Zebulon and Ora Emoline Brown Williams of Summit.

He was a member and deacon of Pleasant Hill Baptist Church in Bogue Chitto. He was a prototype technician of aluminum doors and windows for Croft Metals for 22 years. He was also a carpenter and farmer, but most of all he will be remembered as a wonderful and loving husband, father, grandfather and great-grandfather. He loved life, story-telling, music and singing.

Mr. Williams was preceded in death by his parents and two brothers, Walter Ruff and the Rev. Robert Clifton Williams.

Survivors include his wife of 58 years, Dorothy Jordan Williams; two daughters and sons-in-law, Sharon and Keith Guy and Janella and Cliff Moak, all of Bogue Chitto; five grandchildren, Laurie Guy Thompson and husband Mark of Ridgeland, Anthony Guy and Stuart Guy, both of Bogue Chitto, Rebecca Moak Thompson and husband Casey of Byram, and Alisha Moak Cichirillo and husband Steven of Brandon; two great-grandchildren, Logan and Emma Thompson of Ridgeland; two brothers and their wives, James Brown and Jeanette Williams of Bogue Chitto, and Mike Conner and Cleo Williams of McComb; and numerous nieces and nephews.

Pallbearers will be nephews and great-nephews: Byron Williams, Robert Williams, Thomas Williams, Cliff VanNorman, Brad VanNorman, Jason Russell, Jonathan Williams and Stephen Russell.

Honorary pallbearers will be Gene VanNorman, Pat McCullough, Glen McCullough, Jean Kurykendall and Lamar Kurykendall.

Alice Cassels Butler

Alice Cassels Butler, 97, a lifetime resident of the Homochitto community near Gloster, died Feb. 20, 2008, at the Guest House in Baton Rouge.

Visitation is today from 6 to 8 p.m. at Brown Funeral Home in Gloster, and Monday from 10 a.m. until services there at 11 a.m. with the Rev. Reggie Forman officiating. Burial will be in Talbert Cemetery near Gloster.

Mrs. Butler was born May 30, 1910, in Amite County, the daughter of the Rev. Delos H. Cassels and Ida Bryant Cassels. She was a homemaker and a lifelong member of Union Methodist Church near Gloster.

She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Earl Butler; one grandson, Gregory Larouche; four brothers, Quayle Cassels, Fielding Cassels, Bryant Cassels, and David Cassels; and two sisters, Mary Cassels and Sella Allen.

Survivors include two daughters: Linda Dyer of Rumford, Maine, and Jenny Simon and husband Paul of Baton Rouge; four grandchildren, Deborah Colby and husband Jim of Limington, Maine, Natalie Burnham of Conway, N. H., Kim Adams and husband Jeff of Denham Springs, La., and Daniel Larouche of Baton Rouge; two sisters, Ottomese Wilson of Summit, and Lyndall Larson of Mesa, Ariz.; three brothers, Bill Cassels and wife Anna Laurie of Natchez, Wilson Cassels and wife Lyndell of Gloster, and Raymond Cassels of Summit; three great-grandchildren, Jennifer Sughrue and husband Patrick of Hollis, Maine. Katie Colby of Limington, Maine, and Brandon Himel of Denham Springs; numerous nieces and nephews

DeWitt Pope

Dewitt Pope, 78, died Feb.23, 2008, at Southwest Mississippi Regional Medical Center. Services are incomplete. Hartman Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

Marie Conerly Nobles

Marie Conerly Nobles, 73, a native of Kentwood and a resident of Summit, died peacefully Feb. 20, 2008, surrounded by her family at her daughter’s residence in Pascagoula.

Visitation is Monday at Craft Funeral Home from 10 a.m. until services there at 1p.m. Burial will be in Greenwood Cemetery.

Mrs. Nobles was born Feb. 24, 1934 in Kentwood to the late Ernest Conerly and Melissa Williams. She was a 1950 graduate of Burgland High School in McComb, where she was class valedictorian. At the time of her graduation, she was female in Pike County to receive a full scholarship to Spelman College in Atlanta, but instead decided to become a loving wife, devoted mother and homemaker. In the early 1960s, she attended a cosmetology school in Hammond, where she became a licensed beautician. After raising her children, she attended Southwest Mississippi Community College, where she received an associate’s degree in education, and later served as a substitute teacher in the McComb Public School System. She was a lifelong member of Sherwood Seventh Day Adventist Church of McComb, where she was the pianist for a number of years. As a child, she was always a lover of music. She studied piano at the young age of six, and also played for a number of churches in Kentwood while still in her youth. Her advancement in piano led her to teach a small number of community children privately in her home. Being a musician, Mrs. Nobles was very creative. Her hobbies included macrame, creating arts and craft items for her home, sewing, and she was an avid reader and studier of world history and religion.

She was preceded in death by her parents; a son, Johnnie Alex Nobles; and a brother, Dewitt Winters.

She leaves to cherish her memories her loving and devoted husband of 57 years, Johnny Frank Nobles; five children, Mitchell Owen Nobles Sr., Fayette Lacaryn Nobles, Warren Miguel Nobles Sr. and wife Sybil, all of McComb, Madge Felecia Scott and husband Welton of Jacksonville, Fla., and Johnys Marie Bradley and husband Sean of Pascagoula; a daughter-in-law, Billie Jean Nobles of Summit; five grandsons, Mitchell Owen Nobles Jr. and wife Camita , Warren Miguel Nobles Jr. and wife Penny, Kasural Lee Nobles, Quentin Alex Nobles and Michael LaCharles Nobles; eight granddaughters, Sharee Nicole Nobles, Kyla Elise Nobles, Kyla Elise Bradley, Kesi Shaunice Bradley, LaChae A. Jenkins, Shakeya Latrice Nobles, Adia Vernice Scott, Warrenisha Miguelas Nobles and Dana Z. Nobles; 13 great-grandchildren; and a host of nieces, nephews, relatives and friends.

Beverly Ann Swenson

Beverly Ann Swenson, 52, of Council Grove, Kan., passed away Feb. 19, 2008, at St. Francis Hospital in Topeka, Kan.

Visitation is from 6 to 9 p.m. Monday at McKneely Funeral Home, Kentwood, La., and Tuesday from 8 a.m. until funeral services there at 10 a.m. with the Rev. Joey Miller officiating. Burial will be in Line Creek Cemetery, Line Creek, La.

Mrs. Swenson was born Jan. 2, 1956, in Jackson, Miss., to Ivy Lea and Vera Mae Jenkins Miller. She attended Southeastern Louisiana University and received her bachelor of science degree in nursing. She married Gary Swenson on March 3, 1990, in Council Grove. She was a member of the First Baptist Church in Council Grove. Beverly enjoyed cooking, canning, gardening and traveling. One of her favorite things to do was bringing seafood from Louisiana and cooking it for all her family and friends. She loved cats and dogs and enjoyed spending time with her dog Max. She worked as a nurse in Louisiana and also as a home health nurse in Manhattan and Emporia, Kan.

She was preceded in death by her mother, Vera Miller; and father-in-law and mother-in-law, Adrian and Violet Swenson.

Survivors include her husband; father, Ivy Lea "Butch" Miller of Kentwood, two stepsons, Matthew Swenson and wife Jamie, and Mitchell Swenson and wife Rene, all of Topeka, Kan.; four grandchildren, Avary, Aidan, Cora, and Caden Swenson; two brothers, Michael Miller and wife Polly, and Larry Miller and wife Wanda, all of Kentwood; six nieces; one nephew; three great-nieces and numerous other relatives and friends. Memorial contributions may be made to St. Jude Children's Hospital or to American Diabetes Association.

CASEY LYNNE CASANOVA

U.S. Marine Corps Lance Cpl. Casey Casanova, 22, of McComb, died May 3, 2008, in Iraq. Visitation is 1 p.m. Saturday at New Heights Baptist Church, 5140 Highway 98 West, Summit, until services there at 3, with Pastor Chris Jones, Pastor Paul Clark and the Rev. Rick Kennedy officiating. Burial with full military rites will be in Adams United Methodist Church Cemetery in the Auburn community, with Hartman-Sharkey Funeral Home in McComb in charge.

Lance Cpl. Casanova was born March 27, 1986, in Metairie, La. She was the daughter of Craig Lewis Casanova of St. Rose, La., and Paula Carruth of McComb.

She was a member of the Seventh-day Adventist Church in McComb. She attended North Pike Middle School, where she played in the band, and was a graduate of Bass Memorial Academy in Lumberton. She graduated from Southwest Mississippi Community College, where she was a singer and played steel drums in the stage band. She was a leader in the New Heights Baptist Church youth group.

Her family said Casey was a loving and outgoing person. She loved to spend time helping people. She spent a lot of her time volunteering to feed the hungry. She was a selfless and giving person and was a person whom everyone loved and loved to be around. She will be greatly missed by all.

Lance Cpl. Casanova was preceded in death by an uncle, Kirk Bing.

Survivors include her mother; her maternal grandparents, John Paul and Kitty Carruth of McComb; her maternal great-grandmother, Ruth Williams Carruth of Summit; her fiancé, Cpl. Brandon Henderson of Camp Pendleton, Calif.; an uncle and aunt, Bruce Wayne “Batman” and Sandra Carruth of Jefferson, La.; two cousins, Molly Ann Carruth and Bruce Wayne Carruth Jr., both of Jefferson, La.; her father; two sisters, Bailey and Alana Casanova, both of St. Rose; her paternal grandparents, Lynne Rivet of New Orleans and James Casanova of Metairie.

VINCENT D. WEATHERSBY

Vincent D. Weathersby, 42, of McComb, died May 1, 2008, at Gulfport Memorial Hospital.

Visitation is 4:30-6:30 p.m. Friday at Cook’s Enterprise Funeral Home of McComb, then 9 a.m. Saturday at Walker’s Chapel Free Will Baptist Church until services there at 11 a.m. Elder Don Johnson will officiate, assisted by eulogist Dr. Lewis E. Ragins Sr., pastor of Morning Star Missionary Baptist Church in Gulfport. Burial will be in Greenlawn Cemetery.

Mr. Weathersby was born July 31, 1965, in Pike County. He was the son of Bernie Nobles Williams of McComb and Charles G. Johnson.

He was preceded in death by his grandparents, Wilbert and Bertyle Nobles; an uncle, Melvin Nobles; and an aunt, Wilma Nobles Gaitlin.

Survivors include his mother and stepfather, Curtis Williams of McComb; two children, Isaiah and Lesah Weathersby, both of Gulfport; a godchild, Raquel Parker of New Orleans; a sister, Vanicca Bonds and husband Anthony Bonds Sr. of McComb; four brothers and three sisters-in-law, Donald and Carolyn Weathersby of McComb, Sgt. First Class Charles and Angel Johnston of Rayford, N.C., Wilbert Weathersby of Newman, Ga., and Anthony Weathersby Jr. and Victoria of Bryan, Texas; two stepsisters, Jennifer Molock and husband Jay of Denver and Janice Williams of Fayetteville, N.C.; an aunt, Carolyn Ann Nobles Williams of McComb; an uncle, Ernest Randolph Nobles and wife Floria of McComb; and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, other relatives and friends.
