MAVIS CALLENDER

Mavis Callender, 89, of Natchitoches, La., and formerly of Brookhaven, died May 8, 2008, at Natchitoches Regional Medical Center.

Arrangements are incomplete with Catchings Funeral Home in McComb in charge.

FREDDIE MAE CONERLY

Freddie Mae Conerly, 88, of McComb, died May 6, 2008, at her home.

Visitation was 10 a.m. today until services at 10:30 at Hartman-Sharkey Funeral Home in McComb. The Revs. Ed Sudduth and J. Frank Smith officiated. Burial was in Hollywood Cemetery.

Mrs. Conerly was born April 10, 1920, in Mount Hermon, La., to Dossie and Margie Miller Morris.

She was a longtime member of First Baptist Church in McComb. She was a retired registered nurse, having worked most of her 50-year career as a private duty nurse. She worked for a number of years at McComb City Hospital and Southwest Mississippi Regional Medical Center. She also taught nurses aide classes at Southwest Mississippi Community College.

She was preceded in death by her parents; a brother, Edward Morris; and sisters, Irma Miller, Jessie Roberts and Doris Morris.

Survivors include her husband of 61 years, Jewel D. Conerly of McComb; a daughter and son-in-law, Brenda and Frank Fisher of Charlotte, N.C.; a granddaughter, Jennifer Fisher Revelle and husband David of Charlotte; two nephews, Hugh Roberts and Allen Morris; three nieces, Bernadette Morris, Sandra Wesley and Sylvia Morris; two great-nieces, Kimberly and Courtney Roberts; and her loving and devoted caretakers, Jerelyn Roberts and Patricia Price, both of McComb.

Pallbearers were Charles Dunagin, Jimmy Cooper, Cliff Clark, Harold White, Balfour Lipscomb and Ronnie Thaxton.

STELLA L. VARNDAO

Stella L. Varnado, 62, of Osyka, died May 3, 2008, at Southwest Mississippi Regional Medical Center. Visitation is 2 to 4 p.m. Friday at Cook’s Enterprise Funeral Home of McComb. Services are 11 a.m. Saturday at Shady Grove Baptist Church, with the Rev. Bertrand Smith, pastor, officiating. Burial will be in Varnado Cemetery.

Ms. Varnado was born April 8, 1946. She was the daughter of the late Robert Varnado Sr. and Willie Mae Varnado.

She joined Shady Grove Baptist Church at an early age and remained a member until her death.

Ms. Varnado’s family said she was a loving, caring and devoted caregiver, and she played an essential part in the lives of many. Her door of love and compassion was always open.

She was preceded in death by her parents; three sisters, Aureen Smith, Algie Smith and Audrey Tate; and a brother, Phillip Elzie.

Survivors include a daughter, Danielle M. Hall of Osyka; three children whom she was rearing, LaPorscha Smith, Tyrone Lewis Jr. and Zhyrieal Ard of Osyka; three sisters, Fannie Monclair and husband James, Mary Magee and Bertha Amaker, all of Osyka; two brothers, Lee Varnado Sr. and wife Teresa and Robert Varnado Sr. and wife Dorothy of Osyka; a stepbrother, Frank Elzie of Wilmer, La.; a special nephew, Phil Varnado Sr. of Magnolia; an aunt, Lucielle Brumfield of Kentwood, La., and a host of nieces, nephews, relatives and friends.

MARY L. SMITH

Mary L. Smith, 58, of McComb, died May 4, 2008, at Southwest Mississippi Regional Medical Center.

Visitation is 1 p.m. Saturday at Mount Calvary Baptist Church until services there at 3 p.m. The Rev. James Simmons will officiate, and burial will be in Pleasant Spring Baptist Church Cemetery.

Mrs. Smith was born Nov. 11, 1949, in New Orleans. She was the daughter of the late Bolie Knox Sr. and Melissa Chisom Knox.

She was preceded in death by her parents; a son, Michael Knox; and a brother, John Henry Knox.

Survivors include a son, Eldrick Earl Smith of Fort Worth, Texas; two sisters, Lucille Williams of Chatawa and Marion Watson of New Orleans; four brothers, James Knox of Compton, Calif., Charlie Harris of Gulfport, Bolie Knox Jr. of Chatawa and Moyise Knox of New Orleans; an aunt, Jeffery D. Robinson of McComb; six grandchildren; three great-grandchildren; a devoted friend, Richard Daniels; and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, other relatives and friends.

LUTHER T. RATCLIFF

Luther T. Ratcliff, 76, of Liberty, died May 5, 2008, at Southwest Mississippi Regional Medical Center.

Visitation is 7 to 9 p.m. Friday at Cook’s Enterprise Funeral Home. Services are 3 p.m. Saturday at Parson Hill Baptist Church, with Dr. Willie Jones, pastor, officiating. Burial will be in the church cemetery.

Mr. Ratcliff was born June 28, 1931, in Amite County, to Percy and Oma White Ratcliff.

He was preceded in death by his parents; four brothers, Percy Jr., Robert Lee, James and Henry Ratcliff; a sister, Corina Ratcliff; and a granddaughter, Doneka Ratcliff.

Survivors include his devoted wife of 55 years, Ruth Tatum Ratcliff of Liberty; two daughters and a son-in-law, Rose and Greg Redford and Tammy Ratcliff, all of Indianapolis; four sons, Terry Ratcliff and friend Jackie, Luther Tray Ratcliff and Marvine Ratcliff and friend Rena, all of Indianapolis, and Anthony Ratcliff and wife Joyce of Hattiesburg; one brother, Isadore Ratcliff of New Orleans; one sister, Rose Lee Dright of Vallejo, Calif.; five brothers-in-law, Sammie Tatum and friend Ann, John T. Tatum and wife Linda, and E.C. Tatum and wife Ida, all of New Orleans, W.L. Tatum of Hattiesburg, and Willie B. Tatum and wife Rose of Tampa, Fla.; three sisters-in-law, Martha Jackson and Julia Weatherspoon and husband Roosevelt, all of New Orleans, and Alberta Rice and husband Harvey of Indianapolis; 19 grandchildren, 25 grandchildren and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, other relatives and friends.

ERMA L. THOMPSON

Erma L. Thompson, 78, of Centreville, died there May 3, 2008, at Field Memorial Community Hospital, after a lengthy illness.

Visitation is 11 a.m. Saturday at Mount Olive Baptist Church in Centreville until services there at noon. The Rev. Dalton Hills will officiate. Burial will be in the church cemetery. Craft Funeral Home in McComb is in charge of arrangements.

Mrs. Thompson was born July 28, 1929, in Navasota, Texas. She was the daughter of Oscar Monstson and Ella Edwards.

She was a homemaker and was a member of Mount Olive Baptist Church.

Mrs. Thompson was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Willie Thompson; four sons; and her stepfather, John Edwards.

Survivors include three sons, Henry Thompson and Willie Thompson, both of Centreville, and Otis Thompson of Houston, Texas; 11 grandchildren, 17 great-grandchildren and two great-great-grandchildren.

ELLIS BADON JR.

Ellis Badon Jr., 63, of Baton Rouge, died April 29, 2008, at Port Allen, La., where he drowned in a fishing accident.

Visitation is 5 to 8 p.m. Friday at the Center for Christian Unity Church, 3006 Fuqua Ave., Baton Rouge. Services are 2 p.m. Saturday at Craft Funeral Home, 210 Martin Luther King Drive in McComb, with Elder Stanley Ginn officiating. Burial will be in Badon Family Cemetery in Tylertown.

Mr. Badon was born June 25, 1944, in Tylertown, to Ellis Badon Sr. and Rosa Thornton Badon.

He was a self-employed construction worker.

Mr. Badon was preceded in death by his parents, two sisters and three brothers.

Survivors include six daughters, Brenda Raiford of Tylertown, and Pamela Abram, Opal Jones, Linda Williams, Chanel Givens and Yolanda Ginn, all of Baton Rouge; two sons, Ellis Badon III and Austin Badon, both of Baton Rouge; three sisters, Rosetta Short, Mae Demple Smith and Linda Smith, all of Tylertown; six brothers, Elder Love Magee, J.C., K.C., J.L. and John L. Badon, all of Tylertown, and Jimmie Badon of Baton Rouge; a devoted friend, Gloria D. Antwine of Baton Rouge; and a host of nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.

ANNETTE R. SCHMIDT

Annette R. Schmidt, 77, of Sontag, died May 6, 2008, at Mississippi Baptist Medical Center in Jackson.

Services were 11 a.m. today at Shiloh Baptist Church in Sontag. Burial was in the church cemetery under the direction of Wilson Funeral Home in Monticello.

Mrs. Schmidt was born March 26, 1931, in Wanilla, to William and Mattie Ballew Rush.

She was a member of the Daughters of the American Revolution and was an active member of Shiloh Baptist Church.

Mrs. Schmidt was preceded in death by her parents; a son, Roy Allen Schmidt Jr.; and three brothers.

Survivors include her husband, Roy Schmidt of Sontag; two sons, Mark Irvin Schmidt of Corsicana, Texas, and Stephen Edward Schmidt of Sontag; three daughters, Esther Schmidt Martin of Sontag, Suzanne Rebekah Schmidt of Monticello and Anita Schmidt Clements of Hallsville, Texas; a sister, Charlsie Ann Winston of Covington, La.; eight grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.

MARSHALL B. HALFORD

Marshall B. Halford, 84, of Gloster, died May 6, 2008, at his son’s residence near Gloster.

Visitation continued at noon today at Brown Funeral Home in Gloster until services there at 2 p.m., with the Rev. Odus Jackson officiating. Burial is in Mount Pleasant Cemetery near Gloster.

Mr. Halford was born Sept. 18, 1923, in Gloster. He was the son of the late William Reden Halford and Willie May McCray Halford.

He was retired from Kaiser Aluminum, where he was a mechanic. His family said he was a wonderful father, grandfather and friend and will be missed dearly.

He was a World War II veteran and a 32nd Degree Mason.

Survivors include a son, J.B. Halford and wife Jeannie of Gloster; a daughter, Odean Halford of Foxworth; seven grandchildren, Mann, Dwayne and Zina of Houma, La., Loretta and Danielle of Gloster, and Harvey and Regina of Foxworth; 14 great-grandchildren; three sisters, Lily May Bates and Ema Jane Jackson of Roxie and Ruby Nell Savoy of Centreville; two brothers, Richard Halford of Gloster and Quin Allen Halford of Centreville; many hunting friends and other friends.

ANNIE MAE MIXON

Annie Mae Mixon, 68, of McComb, died May 6, 2008, at Southwest Mississippi Regional Medical Center.

Visitation is 10 a.m. Saturday at 24th Street Church of Christ in McComb until services there at 11, with the Rev. Dwight Martin, pastor, officiating. Burial will be in Greenlawn Cemetery in Summit, with Young’s Funeral Home in Summit in charge.

Mrs. Mixon was born Aug. 18, 1939, in Grady, Ark. She was the third daughter of the late Charlie Williams, born in Rayville, La., and Rebecca Irving, born in Sasassa, Ark.

She was employed throughout her life as a domestic worker, helping a lot of people in this area most of her life. She always cared more for other people’s needs than her own, offering a playfulness with them through her entire life.

Mrs. Mixon was preceded in death by her husband of 31 years, William Mixon, who died July 20, 1993.

Survivors include two daughters and sons-in-law, Veda A. Mixon Byrd and William of Summit, and Lenora Johnson and J.T. of Magnolia; a son and daughter-in-law, Vent and Evelyn Mixon of Camden; seven grandchildren, whom she dearly loved; a brother, Joe Louis Williams of Houston, Texas; a brother-in-law, Earl Mixon of Compton, Calif.; a sister-in-law, Emma Jean Franklin of Stone Mountain, Ga.; and a devoted friend, Jerrie Lynn Mason of McComb.

FLORA MAE BISHOP HAYNES

Flora Mae Bishop Haynes, 82, of Summit, died May 4, 2008, at McComb Extended Care.

Visitation is 4 to 6 p.m. Friday at Young’s Funeral Home in Summit. Services are 1 p.m. Saturday at Lone Star Missionary Baptist Church, with the Rev. James E. Miller officiating. Burial will be in Greenlawn Cemetery.

Mrs. Haynes was born Sept. 17, 1925, in Franklin County to the Rev. Gilbert and Fannie Bishop.

She joined Lone Star Missionary Baptist Church at an early age, and remained there until her health failed.

She was preceded in death by her husband, George Haynes; her parents; two sisters, Rosemary Williams and Lena Mae Daniels; and a brother, Floyd Bishop.

Survivors include three sisters, Viola Stallings and husband Marshall of Magnolia, Bessie Bishop of McComb, and Helen Wilson of Seguin, Texas; four brothers, Eugene Bishop of Chicago, Walter Bishop of McComb, David Bishop of Bude and Ray Bishop and wife Della of Magnolia; and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, other relatives and friends.

D’WIGHT CHISHOLM

Infant D’Wight Chisolm died May 6, 2008, at Southwest Mississippi Regional Medical Center. Visitation is 9:30 a.m. Saturday at Tangipahoa Baptist Church in Amite County until services there at 10 a.m., with the Rev. Mike Morris officiating. Burial will be in the church Cemetery, under the direction of Hartman-Sharkey Funeral Home in McComb.
