Leander Bullock

Leander Bullock, 64, of McComb, died Jan. 1, 2009, at Mississippi State Hospital in Pearl.

Visitation is Saturday at True Gospel Baptist Church in McComb until services there at 11 a.m. The Rev. R.C. McCall Jr. of McComb will officiate, and burial will be in Pleasant Grove Church Cemetery in McComb, with Craft Funeral Home in charge.

Mr. Bullock was born Nov. 23, 1944, in McComb, to June and Blanche Garner Bullock.

He was a retired steel factory worker.

Mr. Bullock was preceded in death by his parents and two sisters.

Survivors include a daughter, Tracy L. Barrkavire of Southaven; five sisters, Beatrice Hutchins of McComb, Billie McFarland and her husband Steve of Indianapolis, Emma Jean Hide and her husband Dennis of McComb, Bonnie Pettigrew and Audrey Green, both of Milwaukee; three brothers, Eugene Bullock and his wife Bertha and Edgar Bullock and his wife Mattie, all of McComb; and Joe Louis Bullock of Milwaukee; and two grandchildren.

Margie A. Johnson

Margie A. “Maude” Johnson, 75, of McComb, died March 14, 2009, at McComb Nursing and Rehab, after a lengthy illness.

Visitation is noon Thursday at Unity Baptist Church in Progress until services there at 1 p.m. The Rev. James Simmons will officiate, and burial will be in the church cemetery. Craft Funeral Home in McComb is in charge of arrangements.

Miss Johnson was born July 15, 1933, in Pike County, the youngest child of Eugene and Angie Ross Johnson.

She was a homemaker,a nd her family said she was a beautiful person who blessed the lives of everyone she touched. She joined Kelly M.B. Church and accepted Christ as her savior at an early age. She recently joined Unity M.B. Church, where she remained a faithful member until her death. She loved the Lord and attended worship services at Unity and at the nursing home faithfully until her health failed. She will always be remembered for praising the Lord saying “Yes Lord” on agreement of the word during worship service. She also loved her pastor, the Rev. James Simmons and wife Rose like they were her children.

Although she never married nor had children, she loved her nieces and nephews as though they were her very own.

Miss Johnson was preceded in death by her parents, three sisters and three brothers.

Survivors include a host of nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends, including a special and dear friend, Imogene “Cora” McKnight of McComb; and her McComb Nursing & Rehab Center family residents and staff members.

Annie Mae Allen

Annie Mae Allen, 81, of Centreville, died March 13, 2009, at Wilkinson County Nursing Home after a lengthy illness.

Visitation is 6 to 8 tonight at Winans Chapel Church, 407 Church St., in Centreville, and will continue at noon Thursday until services there at 1 p.m. Pastor Willie R. Jones Jr. will officiate. Burial will be in Patty Cemetery in Centreville, under the direction of Craft Funeral Home in McComb.

Ms. Allen was born Jan. 11, 1928, in Centreville, the oldest of four children of Vassar and Clara Allen.She was a homemaker. She was baptized at an early age and rededicated her life to the Lord in 2002. She became a member of Winans Chapel Church at an early age and remained a member until death.

She was a domestic worker until retirement. She took pride in her work and loved the people for whom she worked. Charlie Germany Jr., Jessica Germany, McKinley Johnson and Camilla Johnson became special to her as she worked for their parents. She always called them her children. After becoming ill, Ms. Allen became a resident of Wilkinson County Health Care Center. There, she was called “Mama” by her nurses and aids, and she called them her children.

Ms. Allen was preceded in death by her parents; three brothers, Winan, Lee and Otis Allen; two sisters, Mary Ethel Brown and Florence Allen; a daughter, Lucy Mae Chapman; a son, Thomas Lee Allen; and a grandson, John A. Singleton.

Survivors include four sons and a daughter-in-law, Joe Allen Jr., David and Lavern Allen and Jerry Allen, all of Centreville, and Garry Allen of Hattiesburg; four daughters and two sons-in-law, Willie and James Banks, Gearldine Allen, Dorothy Singleton and Tracy Ann and Donald Howard, all of Centreville; five brothers and two sisters-in-law, Robert and Earnestine Allen of Centreville, Authur James Allen of Jackson, Willie and Cassandra Allen and Thomas Allen, all of Baton Rouge, and Clarence Allen of New York, N.Y.; a sister, Clara Dean Allen of Centreville; a son-in-law, Fred Chapman of Centreville; a sister-in-law, Ella Allen of Baton Rouge; 21 grandchildren and 28 great-grandchildren; a special nephew, Louis Taplin; and niece, Janie McDaniel; and a host of other nieces, nephews, cousins and friends.

Avon DeWitt Posey

Avon DeWitt Posey, 72, of Jacksonville, Fla., and formerly of McComb, died March 15, 2009, at St. Vincent’s Medical Center in Jacksonville.

Visitation is 5 to 7 tonight at Peeples Family Funeral Home, North Jacksonville Chapel, 2220 Soutel Drive, Jacksonville. Services are 11 a.m. Thursday at the funeral home, with Elder Edward McIntyre officiating. Burial with military honors will follow in Jacksonville National Cemetery.

Mr. Posey was born Aug. 13, 1936, in Jackson. He was the son of the late Houston DeWitt and Ruby Lucille Wolbrecht Posey.

A resident of the Jacksonville area since 1960, Mr. Posey was a Korean War veteran of the U.S. Army. He was a member of American Legion Post No. 400.

Mr. Posey was a member of the former Lake Forest Baptist Church, where he served with the Royal Ambassadors and assisted with the youth group for many years. He coached for Highlands Little League, North Jax. Pop Warner, Paxon Pop Warner and First Coast High School. Mr. Posey coached the Jacksonville Patriots Youth Football Team to a National Championship in 1982. He also coached the Jacksonville First Coast Bucs of the American Legion who were Northern Champions in 1996.

Mr. Posey was a devoted friend who loved his family, the outdoors and fishing.

Survivors include his wife of 43 years, Martha Spicer Posey; two sons and daughters-in-law, Michael and Kimberly Posey and Kevin and Stacy Posey; two sisters and a brother-in-law, Maxine and Gene Wren and Betty Dyer; four brothers and three sisters-in-law, Julius and Helen Davis, Bill and Peggy Tubberville, Curtis and Betty Posey and Jerry Posey; four grandchildren, Kailynn and John Posey, Brandon Gaskins and Chazz Murphy; a great-grandson, Caden Gaskins; and several nieces, nephews, extended family and friends.

Contributions may be made in Mr. Posey’s memory to the American Heart Association or the youth athletic association of choice.

Beatrice B. Sanders

Beatrice Bonds Sanders, 93, of Gloster, died March 14, 2009, at Regency Medical Center in Jackson, after a lengthy illness.

Services are noon Saturday at Sweet Home Baptist Church on Berwick Cassels Road in Gloster until services there at 1 p.m. The Rev. Robert Veals, pastor, will officiate.

Burial will be in the church Cemetery, adjacent to the church, with Cook Funeral Home in Gloster in charge of arrangements.

Arie Mae Scott Hall

Arie Mae Scott Hall, 84, of Kentwood, La., died March 17, 2009, at McComb Nursing and Rehab.

Arrangements are incomplete with Peoples Undertaking Co. of McComb in charge.

McCusker Cunningham

McCusker Cunningham, 78, of Columbus and formerly of Magnolia, died March 17, 2009, at Baptist Memorial Hospital in Columbus.

Arrangements are incomplete, with Jones Memorial Funeral Home in Macon in charge.

Powers I. Dunaway

Powers Irving Dunaway, 66, of Pricedale, died April 6, 2009, at his residence after a lengthy illness.

Visitation is 10 a.m. Wednesday at Hartman-Sharkey Funeral Home in McComb until memorial services there at 11, with Dr. David Millican officiating.

Mr. Dunaway was born July 2, 1942, in Shelby County, Tenn. He was the son of the late Powers H. Dunaway and the late Emily Irene Bumgardner Dunaway.

He was a self-employed gun shop owner and a charter member of Southwest Mississippi Gun Club. He was a member of Calvary Baptist Church in Pricedale and was a U.S. Army veteran.

Survivors include his wife of 44 years, Katherine Mardis Dunaway of Pricedale; a son, Powers Dunaway II of Pricedale; a daughter, Dee Dy Pryor of Laurel; a sister, Patricia McLaws of Denham Springs, La.; two grandchildren and their spouses, Felecia and Nathan Watts and Abel and Chasity Pryor; and two great-grandchildren, Kaelyn Pryor and Marisa Watts.

The family requests memorials be sent to Community Hospices of America, 140 N. Fifth St., McComb, MS 39648.

Myrtis A. Jackson

Myrtis Ashley Jackson, 98, of Kenner, La., and formerly of Liberty, died April 1, 2009, at her home in Kenner after a sudden illness.

Visitation is 11 a.m. Wednesday at Parson Hill Missionary Baptist Church, Liberty, until services there at 1 p.m. The Rev. Willie Jones will officiate. Burial will be in the church cemetery under the direction of Craft Funeral Home in McComb.

Mrs. Jackson was born May 12, 1910, in Summit, to Johnny and Carrie Barner Ashley.She was a homemaker.

Mrs. Jackson was preceded in death by her husband, Thomas Jackson; her parents, two sons, a stepsister, two stepbrothers and a grandson.

Survivors include six daughters and five sons-in-law, Geneva and Roosevelt Lea of Liberty, Ruth and Ellis Crockett of Kenner, Elizabeth and Frank McKnight of Zachary, La., Myrtis Lee and Amos Williams of Baton Rouge, Willie Neal and Robert Creel of Loganville, Ga., and Marie Jackson Ramey of McDonald, Ga.; three sons and two daughters-in-law, Roosevelt and Ruby Jackson of Kenner, J.W. and Beverly Jackson of LaPlace, La., and James Oliver Jackson of Metairie, La.; 45 grandchildren, numerous great-grandchildren, great-great-grandchildren, nieces, nephews, cousins, other relatives and friends.

Jerome W. Freeman Sr.

Dr. Jerome Warren Freeman Sr., 80, of Indianapolis, died there April 2, 2009.

Visitation is 10 a.m. Wednesday at Sylvarena Baptist Church in Wesson, until services there at 11 a.m. The Rev. Stuart Givens will officiate. Burial will be in the church Cemetery, under the direction of Brookhaven Funeral Home.

Dr. Freeman was born July 3, 1928, in Indianapolis, to George Louis and Ida Helen Freeman.

Dr. Freeman lost his hearing at the age of 7 from spinal meningitis.

He was a graduate of Indiana School for the Deaf and Gallaudet University in Washington, D.C. He received a master’s degree in education from Mississippi College, a master’s degree in administration from San Fernando State University and a doctorate in curriculum and administration from the University of Tennessee.

He was a teacher, administrator, professor and director of deaf services in eight states for 48 years. He was director of Deaf and Hard of Hearing Services for the state of Indiana, with Relay Indiana and the Board of Standards for Interpreters.

He was a member of Peace Lutheran Church for the Deaf.

Dr. Freeman was preceded in death by his parents; two brothers, Russell and Ricky; and a sister, Mildred.

Survivors include his wife of 55 years, Helen Beatrice Jackson Freeman of Indianapolis; two sons and daughters-in-law, Jerome W. Freeman Jr. and Deborah of Decatur, and Michael Louis and Kelly Freeman of Indianapolis; and four grandchildren, Jenny, Bob, Joe and Sarah.

Pallbearers are Kyle Jackson, Greg Jackson, Kurt Jackson, Joseph Freeman, Jerry Freeman and Mike Freeman.

Memorials may be made in honor of Dr. Freeman to Peace Lutheran Church for the Deaf in Indianapolis.
