JOHN HARRIS “BUBBER” WHITE JR.

John Harris “Bubber” White Jr., 75, a well-known attorney, died April 7, 2009, at his McComb residence following a lengthy illness.

Visitation is 5 to 8 tonight at Hartman-Sharkey Funeral Home in McComb, then 12:30 p.m. Thursday at J.J. White Memorial Presbyterian Church until services there at 2 p.m. Dr. Randy Lewman, the Rev. Elizabeth Gabbard and Dr. Steve Ramp will officiate. Burial with military honors will be in Hollywood Cemetery.

Mr. White was born Oct. 15, 1933, in McComb, where he was a lifelong resident. He was the son of John H. White Sr. and Ella Neville White.

Before graduating from McComb High School, where he played football and was in the band, he attended the McComb public schools and McCallie Military School, where he was sent by his uncle, Hugh L. White.

He graduated from the University of Mississippi School of Business after first having entered pharmacy school. He later received a juris doctorate degree from the Mississippi School of Law. Before his years in law school, he served two years active duty in Korea as a member of the National Guard. While in law school, he and his wife Sue served as host and hostess at the Alumni House.

Mr. White practiced law for 46 years, during which time he served eight years as a selectman for the City of McComb during the 1960’s, was McComb City Judge for 18 years and was Summit Town Judge for 25 years, retiring in 2008 due to failing health. During this time he started the Work Program for Youth, which has been adopted by most cities in Mississippi.

In 1966, he received the McComb Jaycees’ Distinguished Service Award as the Outstanding Young Man of the Year and was a member of the Main Street Association, the Pike County Chamber of Commerce and the United Givers.

The McComb Rotary Club was an important part of his life, and he had 45 years perfect attendance. He was a Paul Harris Fellow and had worked with the Rotary Club’s baseball program and its annual auction for many years. He also helped his wife coach the girls’ basketball team in the Summit Rotary program.

Mr. White loved Ole Miss and was an ardent fan of the Ole Miss Rebels and the New Orleans Saints. He was a football official for the Mississippi Private School Association for 45 years.

Along with his children, he operated the Crazy Sam Fireworks business for 27 years and especially enjoyed talking with the customers.

Mr. White was a member of J.J. White Memorial Presbyterian Church, where he served as an elder and deacon, was chairman of numerous committees and taught the Men’s Bible Class for 37 years. He was moderator of the Session, trustee for the church and chairman of the Judicial Committee for the Presbytery.

The White home has been open to many civic affairs, and Mr. White was a sponsor of the Heart Fund Dinner held on the lawn of their home. His wife maintains a large rose garden, and he enjoyed delivering the roses to various friends, nursing homes and places of business.

Mr. White has served as president of the Pike County Bar Association, president of the Mississippi Judges Association, president of the Mississippi Municipal Attorneys Association, served on the Mississippi Board of Bar Commissioners and the McComb/Pike County Economic Development Board.He was appointed city attorney for the McComb City Board and enjoyed his work with the board and mayors Ronnie Wilkinson, J.C. Woods and Tommy Walman. He also served as law clerk for Judge Ben F. Cameron on the U.S. Fifth Circuit Court of Appeals.

At Southwest Mississippi Community College, he taught several banking courses for the American Institution of Banking and Business Law. He served on the board of directors of Fernwood Country Club for 25 years and was twice elected president.

Mr. White was an ombudsman for the Mississippi National Guard and helped many young men with various problems concerning their employment. He received the Seven Seals Award for his service as the state assistant ombudsman for the Employer Support of the Guard and Reserve.

During the respective illnesses of attorneys Ben Regan and O.W. Phillips, Mr. White operated their law offices for them.

Mr. White was preceded in death by his parents.

He is survived by his wife of nearly 52 years, Sue Lawson White of McComb; two daughters and sons-in-law, Polly Ann and Dr. Randy Lewman of Brookhaven and Dr. Suzy White-Williams and Dr. Wayne Williams of Tupelo; four grandchildren, Casey and Cody Lewman of Brookhaven and Ashley and Anna Katherine Williams of Tupelo; a sister and brother-in-law, Ella and Larry Weston of Madison; a niece, Judge Deborah Davis and her husband, Federal Magistrate Jerry Davis of Tupelo; a nephew, Duke Selph of Gulfport; and four cousins, Billy Neville and John Beard Neville of Jackson, Dr. Robert Brumfield Jr. of Canada, Calif., and Robert W. Brumfield of McComb.

Pallbearers will be Robert Deligiannis, Waldo Hitt, Billie Hughes, Whitney Rawlings, Jerry Stogner and J.C. Woods.

Honorary pallbearers will be Perry Ashley, Dr. Robbie DeCoux, Danny Esch, Wade Lamb, the Rev. Bob Lynch, Bobby Maddox, Bubba Mathis, Dr. Jimmy McDonald, Sam Mims, E.C. Nobles, Thomas Walman and members of the McComb Rotary Club.

The family requests memorial donations be sent to J.J. White Memorial Presbyterian Church Building Fund, P.O. Box 774, McComb, MS 39649.

ANGELA DIAN SMITH

Angela Dian Smith, 44, of Jackson, La., and formerly of Vivian, La., died April 6, 2009, at her Jackson home.

Visitation is 1 p.m. today at Ebenezer Baptist Church in Amite County and continues until services there at 1 p.m. Thursday. The Rev. Joe Jackson will officiate. Burial will be in the church Cemetery, under the direction of Brown Funeral Home in Gloster.

Mrs. Smith was born Nov. 24, 1964, in Vivian, to George “Bud” Washington Nottingham and Mamie Lee Stinson Nottingham.

She was a homemaker and was of the Baptist faith.

Mrs. Smith was preceded in death by her parents; and a brother, George Wayne Nottingham.

Survivors include her husband, Brian Smith of Jackson; a daughter, Ashley Stewart and her husband Matt Watkins of Hattiesburg; a son, Kristofer Stewart of Picayune; two brothers, Jimmy Nottingham and his wife Marie of Liberty and Manny Nottingham of Central, La.; a stepsister, Connie Sue Lester of Central; and numerous nieces an nephews.

DORIS YVONNE MOYD

Doris Yvonne Moyd, 67, of Summit, died April 1, 2009, at Hood Memorial Hospital in Amite, La.

Visitation is 4 to 6 p.m. Thursday at Cook’s Enterprise Funeral Home in McComb. Services are 4 p.m. Friday at Zion Hill Baptist Church, with Elder James Stokes, pastor, officiating. Burial will be in Bogue Chitto Cemetery.

Mrs. Moyd was born April 26, 1941, in Pike County. She was the daughter of the late Robert Joseph and Viney M. Brister Joseph Powell.

She was an experienced cook in Rochester, N.Y., where she worked for 35 years. She was a member of Zion Hill Free Will Baptist Church.

Mrs. Moyd was preceded in death by her parents; seven brothers, Billie, Elmo, Charles, Earl, Kenneth, Howard and Herman Joseph; and a son, Sammy Terrell Moyd.

Survivors include her loving husband of 31 years, Sam F. Moyd of Summit; a daughter, Jackie Moyd of Sanford, Fla.; a brother, Shedrick Joseph of San Diego, Calif.; seven sisters and three brothers-in-law, Linda Joseph and Cora and Walter Mitchell, all of Summit, Gloria and Robert Monroe of Rochester, Peggy and Ray Youngblood of Gulfport, Diane Joseph and Nancy Joseph, both of Jackson, and Mary Thomas of Kentucky; a daughter-in-law, Carrie Mitchell of Summit; four brothers-in-law; four sisters-in-law; two aunts, Annie Mae Knox of Summit and Dorothy Brister of New Orleans; four grandchildren, Keyaire Moyd and Keyamber Moyd, both of Summit, Teyaire McGraffery of McComb and Craig Burroughs of Sanford; two goddaughters, 10 godsons, six special friends and a host of nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.

TAMIKO K. HUGHES

Tamiko Kunimatsu Hughes, 85, of Tylertown, died April 2, 2009, at Southwest Mississippi Regional Medical Center.

Visitation is 9 a.m. Thursday at Capps Funeral Home in Tylertown until services there at 11 a.m. The Rev. Millard Moak will officiate.

Mrs. Hughes was born Jan. 13, 1924, in Japan, to Jugor and Resu Kunimatsu.

She was a homemaker, and she attended Union Baptist Church.

Mrs. Hughes was preceded in death by her parents and her husband, Muldrow L. Hughes.

She has no surviving relatives in the United States.

LUTHER HAROLD ASKEW

Luther Harold Askew, 85, of Tylertown, died April 8, 2009, at his home. Visitation is 5 to 8 tonight at Hartman-Hughes Funeral Home in Tylertown. Services are 11 a.m. Thursday at the funeral home, with the Rev. Buddy Day officiating. Burial will be in Tylertown Cemetery.

Mr. Askew was born Oct. 1, 1923, in Marion County, to Ellis and Eunice Singletary Askew. He was a graduate of Columbia High School and Mississippi State University and was a sanitarian with the Mississippi State Board of Health. He was a member of Tylertown Baptist Church.

Mr. Askew was preceded in death by his parents and his wife, Nita Sibley Askew.

Survivors include a son, Brian Askew of Tylertown; a daughter, Brenda Fortenberry of Columbia; a sister, Peggy Herrington and husband Cecil of Magee; and a grandchild, Ashley Schwartz.

Pallbearers are Cecil and Dale and Bernie Herrington, Justin Van, Keith Schwartz and Robert Earl Vince.

GLADYS S. GRADY

Gladys S. Grady, 77, of Madison, died there April 8, 2009, at St. Catherine’s Village. Arrangements are incomplete with Jones Family Funeral Services in McComb in charge.

Gladys A. Reeves

Gladys A. Greer Reeves, 77, of McComb, died April 8, 2009, at McComb Extended Care.

Visitation is 5 to 8 tonight at Hartman-Sharkey Funeral Home in McComb and 9 a.m. Friday until services at 10 a.m., with the Revs. Tom Burris and Dennis Walker officiating. Burial will be in Reeves Cemetery.

Mrs. Reeves was born Feb. 24, 1922, in Lincoln County. She was the daughter of Newton Franklin and Emma Roxie Attaway Greer.

She was a homemaker and for many years was secretary for Reeves Well Service. She was a member of Fellowship Baptist Church in Summit and sang alto in the choir. Her family remembers her as a lady who loved her family and church and enjoyed visiting and being visited by her relatives and church family. She loved to play piano and was known as one of the best seamstresses in the area. She also loved to cook and had a love for arts and crafts and made many different items.

She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Chester Reeves Sr.; four brothers, Garvice Greer, Lesby Greer, the Rev. Alcus “Red” Greer and the Rev. N. F. Greer; and three sisters, Dorothy Rutland, Audena Reeves and Wilma Grace Brister.

Survivors include two sons and daughters-in-law, Ches-ter Reeves Jr. and Brenda, and Carl and Tina Reeves, all of McComb; two daughters and a son-in-law, Millie O’Neal and Peggy and J.R. Hodges, all of McComb; a sister, Bernice Summerall and husband Paul of Natchez; a sister-in-law, Hilda Whittington of Canton; a brother-in-law, Roy Reeves of McComb; 14 grandchildren, Tracey Boyd, Wendy Dunaway and husband Bo Jack, Suzie Castello, Scottie Reeves and wife Leslie, Jimmy Reeves and wife Annie, Sam Reeves, Eva White, Lonnie Moak, Ashley Hodges, Ali Hodges, Cheyenne Hodges, Waylon Reeves and wife Jessie, Bradley Wayne Reeves and Colton H. Reeves; 17 great-grandchildren and numerous nieces and nephews.

Pallbearers will be Scott Reeves, Jimmy Reeves, Sam Reeves, Lonnie Moak, Waylon Reeves and Bo Jack Dunaway. Honorary pallbearers will be Brad, Trey and Hunter Boyd.

Mary Lizzie Spears

Mary Lizzie “Red” Spears, 64, of Liberty, died April 6, 2009, at University Medical Center in Jackson after a long illness. Visitation is 5 to 7 p.m. Friday at Peoples Undertaking Co. in McComb. Services are 1 p.m. Saturday at Cedar Grove United Methodist Church in Liberty. The Rev. Marvin Ennis, pastor, will officiate. Burial will be in the church cemetery.

Ms. Spears was born May 17, 1944, in Liberty, to Nehemiah and Lula Tobias Spears. She was a member of Cedar Grove United Meth-odist Church.

She was preceded in death by her parents; grandson, Derrick Spears; sister, Rosena Tobias; and a brother.

Survivors include her companion, Ceaborn “Ceab” Bates of Liberty; five daughters and three sons-in-law, Gloria and James Patterson, Helen Spears, Ellen and June Henry, Rosetta and Derrick Robinson and Latricia Spears, all of Liberty; son, Ellis Bates of Liberty; three brothers and two sisters-in-law, Leon and Pearlie Mae Spears of Magnolia, Willie and Gloria Spears and Leo Spears of Liberty; 14 grandchildren, a great-grandchild and host of nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.

Mae Florence Lenoir

Mae Florence Hood Lenoir, 70, of Magnolia, died April 3, 2009, at Southwest Mississippi Regional Medical Center after a short illness.

Visitation is noon to 4 p.m. Friday at Cook’s Enterprise Funeral Home of McComb. Services are 1 p.m. Saturday at Tickfaw Baptist Church on Bates School Road in Magnolia, with the Rev. Moyess Boss, pastor, officiating. Burial will be in the church cemetery.

Mrs. Lenoir was born Feb. 19, 1939, in Magnolia, to Robert “Knot” and Essie Scott Hood.

She was a retired business owner, a graduate of Pike County Agricultural High School in Magnolia and was a member of Tickfaw Baptist Church, where she was baptized as a child.

Mrs. Lenoir was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Jessie Lenoir; a sister, Lillie B. Harness; and two brothers, Joe Louis and Leroy Hood.

Survivors include two daughters and a son-in-law, Janis Hood of Magnolia and Lillie Hood Mason and Joseph of Amite, La.; seven sons and daughter-in-law, Edward “Pete” Hood, Ray Charles Hood, Wallace Van Hood, Jessie J. Lenoir Jr., J.P. Lenoir, Jimmy Dale and Shirell Lenoir and William Bernard Lenoir, all of Magnolia; two brothers and sisters-in-law, William and O’neil Hood of Chicago and Hillary and Mary Hood of Magnolia; a sister, Delia Gordon of Magnolia; two sisters-in-law, Annette Winding and Queen E. Gallagher of Magnolia; a brother-in-law, Melvin Lenoir of Magnolia; grandchildren and great-grandchildren; honorary godsons, Ricky Martin and Willie L. Hood; a special caregiver, Rhonda McNeil; and a host of other relatives and friends.
