Visitation is noon Saturday at Young’s Funeral Home in Summit until services there at 1 p.m. Bro. Charles Durr will officiate. Burial will be in Greenlawn Cemetery in Summit.

Mr. Ridley was born Oct. 21, 1936, in Smithdale to Eugene Ridley Sr. and Victoria Williams Ridley.

He was a retired professional painter and furniture refinisher. His family said he was talented, gifted and artistic in many ways. He could take nothing and make something out of it. He was a kind person who loved his family and true friends.

At an early age, he started singing with his cousins, the Southern Gospel Singers, now the Jackson Southernairs. People used to call him and his cousin Huey P. Williams twins. When you saw one you would see the other. Octavis had the opportunity to perform on stage with the Five Blind Boys from Alabama, “Pop” Staple and the Staple Singers.

At an early age “Jimmy,” as he was often called, attended Rose Hill Baptist Church in Smithdale. On one Easter Sunday, he performed in the annual Easter program. He was dressed in old ragged clothes, with his hat turned backward, holes in the knees of his pants and shoes. Jim was beckoned from the audience to turn his hat around. Little did the audience know this was the way he was to perform. After he completed his speech, he sang this song, “Mother’s Little Children Has a Hard Time When Mother is Gone.” He received a standing ovation, and was rewarded with a new shinny penny, from Mr. Sam Cain. Later, he obeyed the gospel, under the ministry of Bro. James Cothern and moved to McComb.

He loved music, plants and watching them grow. He loved his family and often talked about how he worked in his mother’s flower garden. At one time, he dug up a quarter, once he finished his job for mother. He asked her, “May I go to the movies now with Huey?”

Mr. Ridley was preceded in death by his parents; a sister, Fannie Cain; and a brother, Lance Samuel Ridley.

Survivors include seven sisters, Annie Knox, Launell Wesley, Wilena Rigsby, Earnestine Weatherspoon and husband Hollis of Summit, Etherine Jackson of Mccomb, Carrie Mae Ridley and Emma Jean Ridley of Milwaukee; three brothers, Eugene Ridley Jr. and his wife Lillie, and Earnest Ridley and his wife Jessie of Summit, and Marco Ridley of Los Angeles; an aunt, Amanda Williams of Smithdale; two uncles, Vernell Ridley and his wife Annie of Chicago and Samuel B. In 1947, she married Clyde McManus Jr. During their 42 years of marriage, they lived in Jackson, where they raised their three children, and later returned to Progress upon Mr. McManus’ retirement from Illinois-Central Railroad.

Beauty came easily for her, whether it was with her beloved flowers or beholding her children, grandchildren or friends. What a joy she was to be with: always positive, always sensitive to others, always caring and always loving. Her faith in and relationship with Jesus was an example for everyone.
