Dorothy P. Lang

Dorothy Marie Pugh Lang, 90, of Magnolia, died April 29, 2009, at Southwest Mississippi Regional Medical Center.

Graveside services were 11 a.m. Thursday at Bluff Springs Baptist Church Cemetery in Magnolia.

Mrs. Lang was born April 18, 1919, in Winston County in Loakfoma, a town in East Central Mississippi that no longer exists. She was the daughter of Thomas S. Pugh and Alma Eskridge Pugh.

She was a homemaker and a member of Bluff Springs Baptist Church.

Mrs. Lang had resided on Lang Road east of Magnolia for more than 70 years.

As a teenager in the early 1930s, she moved from Winston County to Magnolia to join her older sister, Ella, who had previously come to Pike County to earn money in the Sanders Cotton plant to help support their family during the difficult times of the Great Depression years.

Mrs. Lang worked side-by-side with her sister for several years before meeting and marrying a local cotton farmer’s son, Eugene Winford Lang, in 1938.

Mrs. Lang’s parents, Thomas and Alma, also later moved to Pike County from Louisville. Dorothy was a cousin of the country singer Tammy Wynette.

After Mrs. Lang’s husband’s service in the United States Army during World War II, the couple worked together on their farm for nearly 40 years.

Their extensive farming operations on 300 acres included a dairy and cattle farm. Her husband also raised soybeans and other crops. They were named the Pike County Chamber of Commerce’s Farm Family of the Year in 1968.

As Dorothy was the only one of the Pugh siblings to live “in the country,” her household was always a reunion destination for visiting kinfolk.

A great cook and flower and vegetable gardener in her heyday, she loved her family above all else.

She was a tremendous housewife and mother. Dorothy always regarded her sister, Ella Chadwick, as her “second mama.”

Mrs. Lang was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Eugene W. Lang; one son, Stacy Lang; two brothers, Bert and Maurice Pugh; two sisters, Ella Chadwick and Avis Poole; and one half-sister, Fannie Atkinson.

Survivors include one daughter, Kathryn Marlene Lang Barnes of McComb; two sons, Thomas E. Lang and his wife Sylvia of Linn Creek, Mo., and Keith Lang of Magnolia; a sister, Doris Case of Magnolia; grandchildren, Paul Barnes of Progress, Marilyn Terrell of Liberty, Ken Barnes of Metairie, La., and Tommy and Jimmy Lang of the Dallas area; five great-grandchildren, great-great-grandchildren and numerous nieces, nephews, cousins and other relatives.

Joseph J. Thames

Joseph Jerome Thames, 75, of Lincoln County, died May 5, 2009, at Southwest Mississippi Regional Medical Center in McComb.

Services will be announced at a later date. Jones Family Funeral Services in McComb is in charge of arrangements.

Mr. Thames was born Sept. 6, 1933, in Lawrence County to Patrick “Roney” and Beulah Hall Thames.

He was retired from Land Services and was a member of the Baptist faith. His family said he was loved by all and will be sadly missed by all who knew him.

Mr. Thames was preceded in death by his parents, two brothers and three sisters.

Survivors include his former wife, Sibylle Prince; three sons, David Thames and John Thames, both of McComb, and Joseph Schaefer of Bogue Chitto; one daughter, Rene Hewitt and her husband Rick of Summit; four grandchildren, Crystal Thames, Stephen Thames, Brandon Schaefer and Codie Hewitt; and one nephew, Patrick Price.

Lenoir Martin

Lenoir Martin, 61, of McComb and formerly of Jayess, died May 6, 2009, at her residence in McComb.

Arrangements are incomplete with Craft Funeral Home in McComb in charge.

Allison W. Drummond

Allison W. “Bo” Drummond, 62, of Mount Olive, died May 4, 2009, at Magee General Hospital in Magee.

Visitation will be 6 to 8 tonight and 9 to 9:50 a.m. Thursday at Colonial Chapel Funeral Home in Mount Olive. Graveside services will be 10 a.m. Thursday in Mount Olive City Cemetery. The Rev. Joe Gardner will officiate.

Mr. Drummond was born in Mount Olive. He was the son of John Pink and Laura Ellen Wade Drummond.

He retired from the U.S. Postal Service with 26 years of service as a rural mail carrier. He also served in the U.S. Army during the Vietnam War.

Mr. Drummond was preceded in death by his parents and one sister, Mary Drummond Brown.

Survivors include his wife of 25 years, Judy Williams Drummond of Mount Olive; one stepson, Brian J. Calhoun of Mount Olive; one brother and sister-in-law, John R. and Suzi Drummond of McComb; two nieces, Keely Drummond and Jennifer Drummond Deutrom, both of Austin, Texas; and one nephew, Chris Brown of Ocean Springs.

Pallbearers will be Bill Johnson, Bill Sullivan, Marty Dickson, Joe Tolleson, Henry Leonard and Charlie Anglin.

William G. Lang

William Gordon Lang of Magnolia, died May 5, 2009, at his residence.

Arrangements are incomplete with Hartman-Sharkey Funeral Home in McComb in charge.

James Moore

James Moore, 79, of Centreville, died May 3, 2009, at University Medical Center in Jackson.

Services will be noon Saturday at Winan Chapel C.M.E. Church in Centreville. The Rev. Willie R. Jones will officiate. Burial will be in St. Luke No. 2 Church Cemetery in Woodville. Anderson Funeral Home in Gloster is in charge of arrangements.

Mr. Moore was born March 15, 1930, in Monroe, La.

He was a retired logger and a member of Winan Chapel C.M.E. Church.

Survivors include four sons, James Elmore of Dallas, James E. Anderson of Jackson and Charles and John Anderson of New Orleans; three daughters, Shelia Anderson and Ruby Anderson of Centreville, and Nancy Collins of Bude; 25 grandchildren and other relatives and friends.

Wilma ‘Billie’ Brock

Wilma Louise “Billie” Andrews Brock, 84, died May 6, 2009, at University Medical Center in Jackson.

Graveside services are 11 a.m. Saturday in Hollywood Cemetery in McComb, with the Rev. Elizabeth Gabbard and Pastor Charles Ray officiating. Hartman-Sharkey Funeral Home in McComb is in charge of arrangements.

Mrs. Brock was born March 12, 1925, in Magnolia, in the family home at 135 W. Myrtle St., with all three of the physicians in Magnolia in attendance. She was the daughter of Fred Clifton Andrews of Magnolia and Pauline Louise Overcash Andrews of China Grove, in Rowan County, N.C.

She was educated in the public schools of Magnolia, Belhaven College and the University of Alabama, where she received a bachelor of arts degree in elementary education.

She married Dr. Ralph Lucius Brock of McComb on June 14, 1947, in the Magnolia Presbyterian Church, and they became the parents of four daughters.

In 1949, “Billie” and Dr. Brock moved to McComb, where she was actively involved in many church and civic activities. She was a lifetime member of the Magnolia Presbyterian and J.J. White Memorial Presbyterian churches and held many offices in the Women of the Church.

She was a lifetime member of the McComb Junior Auxiliary and was selected as queen of the JA Azalea Ball in 1977. She was a 50-year member of the Crescite Club. She and Ralph served as co-presidents of the Pike County Arts Council in 1980.

She was a Girl Scout leader and a member of the McComb Garden and Flower Lovers clubs. She also served as president of the Hughes Elementary School PTA.

Mrs. Brock was preceded in death by two infant daughters; her parents; her paternal grandparents, William Pinckney Andrews and Celissa Ophelia Simmons of Pike County; and maternal grandparents, Hinton Raleigh Overcash and Leah Louisa Anzanetta Kimball of Rowan County, N.C.

Survivors include her loving and devoted husband of 61 years, Ralph Brock of McComb; two daughters, Brenda Leah Brock McIntyre and husband Jim of Jackson, and Nancy Louise Brock of Brazoria, Texas; two grandsons, Andrew Brock McIntyre and Nolan Fife McIntyre of Jackson; a step-granddaughter, Hannah J. McIntyre of Austin, Texas; three brothers and sisters-in-law, Hinton and Jane Andrews of Miramar Beach, Fla., Thad and Alice Andrews of Greenwood, and Paul and Janice Andrews of Huntsville, Texas; and numerous nieces and nephews.

Pallbearers will be David Feldman, Chip Gibbes, Bill Mitchell, Tommy Ratcliff, Whitney Rawlings and Noggin Wild. Honorary pallbearers will be Hinton Andrews, Paul Andrews, Thad Andrews, Jep Brock, Jim Brock, Newton H. James, Dr. W.M. Kennedy, David Kimble and Ron Yates.

The family requests that memorial contributions be made to the Building Fund at J.J. White Memorial Presbyterian Church, P.O. Margaret Owens

Margaret Owens, 76, of Thibodeaux, La., and formerly of McComb, died May 8, 2009, at Thibodeaux Regional Medical Center.

Arrangements are incomplete with Catchings Funeral Home in McComb in charge.

Willie L. Alexander Jr.

Minister Willie L. Alexander Jr., 41, of McComb, died May 6, 2009, at Southwest Mississippi Regional Medical Center, after a sudden illness.

Visitation is 4 p.m. Sunday at St. Matthews Church of God in Christ in McComb, until services there at 6 p.m. Elder Samuel S. Alexander will officiate. Burial will be 10 a.m. Monday in Pike Memorial Gardens, with Craft Funeral Home in McComb in charge.

Minister Alexander was born Oct. 10, 1967, in McComb. He was the son of Eleanor Quinn Jefferson of McComb and the late Willie L. Alexander Sr.

He was a minister and a member of State Line C.O.G.I.C. He also was a member of the Masonic Order and was a musician and car salesman.

He was preceded in death by his father and stepfather, Elder Otha L. Jefferson.

Survivors include his wife, Robin Gayden Alexander of McComb; two daughters, Lon Chasica Alexander and Lauren Johnson, both of McComb; six sons, Willie Alexander III of McComb, Gerrod Alexander of Jackson, Justin Alexander of Columbus, Ga., Stephanie Stewart of Columbus, Ga., Titus Robinson of Belzoni and his unborn son, William L. Alexander of McComb; three sisters and their husbands, Rosa Cleaves and Harvey of Baton Rouge, Giovonna Bridges and Stanley of McComb, and Rhoda Gatlin and Luther of Tylertown; four brothers and their wives, Elder Samuel Alexander and Allisa of Magnolia, Elder Terrance Alexander and LaQuinta of McComb, Evon Jefferson and Gilda of Baton Rouge, and Elder James Jefferson and Helen of Tylertown; one grandchild; a special goddaughter, Joda Alexander of Magnolia; his godmother, Gussie Bennett of McComb; his mother; and mother-in-law and father-in-law, Robert and Lorraine Gayden of Summit.
