Gary Lewis

Gary Lewis, 52, of Sandy Hook, died May 10, 2009, at his residence.

Visitation is 1 to 5 p.m. Friday at Washington Funeral Home of Tylertown and 6 to 8 p.m. at Springhill Missionary Baptist Church, Sandy Hook. Services will be 2 p.m. Saturday at Springhill M.B. Church with the Rev. Versie D. Lee officiating. Burial will be in the church cemetery.

Mr. Lewis was born May 27, 1956, in Bogalusa, La., son of Fred Haynes and Sallie Lewis.

He was a machine operator.

He was preceded in death by his parents and two brothers, Jimmie Lee Mark and Fred Haynes Jr.

Survivors include two daughters, Uratha Bonner of Angie, La., and Fallon Moses of Bogalusa; two sons, Derrick McGowan of Sandy Hook and Gary V. Lewis of Atlanta; nine sisters, Maxie Rayford, Bessie Peters and Theresa Lewis, all of Milwaukee, Evelyn Foster and Jackie Magee, both of Los Angeles, Mary Dean Lewis of Baton Rouge, LaFaye and husband Sammy Irvin of Sandy Hook, Vieolia Sanders of Pasadena, Calif., and Marie Van of Queens, N.Y.; one brother, Oscar and wife Ruth Rayford of Sandy Hook; a fiancee, Louella Fortenberry of Sandy Hook; and nine grandchildren.

Willie P. Daniels

Willie Pearl Bates Daniels, 77, of Magnolia, died May 7, 2009, at Baton Rouge General Hospital.

Visitation is 5 to 7 p.m. Friday at Craft Funeral Home of McComb. Visitation continues Saturday at Tickfaw Missionary Baptist Church, Magnolia, from 10 a.m. until services at 11. The Rev. Edward M. Boss will officiate. Burial is in the church cemetery.

Mrs. Daniels was born Jan. 11, 1932, in Peoria to Howard and Fannie Viola Hurst Bates.

She accepted Christ at an early age and became a lifelong member of Tickfaw M.B. Church. She served faithfully as deaconess and announcement clerk until her health began to decline. She later joined First United Methodist Church of Baker, La., as an affiliate member.

Mrs. Daniels was a member of the Amite County Teachers Association and the Mississippi State Teachers Association. She also was a member of the Heroines of Jericho Tickfaw Court No. 474 for more than 50 years, during which time she held various offices, including Most Ancient Matron and district secretary.

Mrs. Bates attended Europe Bates School of Liberty and Waynesboro High School in Waynesboro. She received a bachelor’s degree in elementary education from Alcorn State University (formerly Alcorn A&M College) and engaged in further study at the Mississippi University for Women (formerly Mississippi State College for Women) and the University of Southern Mississippi.

She was employed with the Amite County public school system as an elementary school teacher, where she nurtured, inspired and educated hundreds of students. She retired from the school system in 1991, along with her sister, Inez Bates Sutton, after 37 years of service.

After retirement she opened a business, Simply Unique Boutique, in Baker and managed it until her health began to decline. She enjoyed traveling, fishing, gardening, writing poems, speeches and making floral arrangements.

Mrs. Daniels was preceded in death by her husband, Phillip; her parents; five brothers, Bernell, Claude, Ellis Ray, Curtis and Marshall Bates; and one sister, Ollye Bates Scott.

She is survived by two loving and devoted daughters and one son-in-law, Dr. Delois Diane Daniels and Charles Rutledge of West Bloomfield, Mich., and Dr. Vera Inez Daniels of Baker; three grandchildren, Cavan Rutledge of Los Angeles, Christopher Rutledge of New York, and Carla Rutledge and husband Sean Eustache of Huntersville, N.C.; one step-grandson, Caleb Rutledge of Detroit; one sister and brother-in-law, Inez Bates and L.W. Sutton of Prentiss; one brother and sister-in-law, Larnell and Lorraine Bates of Liberty; one sister-in-law, Louisa Daniels of Los Angeles; and a host of nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.

Johnnie Lampton

Johnnie E. Lampton, 94, of Tylertown, died May 9, 2009, at her residence.

Visitation is noon to 6 p.m. Friday at Washington Funeral Home of Tylertown. Services will be 11 a.m. Saturday at Mesa Mount Olive Missionary Baptist Church, Tylertown, with the Rev. Lanny Williams officiating. Burial will be in St. Paul Church Cemetery.

Mrs. Lampton was born Feb. 1, 1915, in Tylertown, daughter of John and Mattie Quinn Rayford.

She was a teacher.

She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Rufus S. Lampton Sr.; two daughters, Ann Lampton and Ernestine Brock; two sisters and four brothers.

Survivors include three sons and two daughters-in-law, Rufus and Mary Lampton and Jimmy Lampton, all of Tylertown, and Michael and Omella Lampton of Atlanta; one daughter and son-in-law, Emogene and John Croslan of Atlanta; a goddaughter, Carolyn Nancy Quinn and husband Peter of McComb; 18 grandchildren and 34 great-grandchildren.

Aubrey L. Welch

Aubrey Lee Welch, 53, of Osyka, died June 16, 2009, at University Medical Center in Jackson.

Services were 11 a.m. today at Terry’s Creek Baptist Church, with Bro. Wendell Williams and the Rev. Todd Sumrall officiating. Burial was in Terry’s Creek Cemetery. Hartman-Sharkey Funeral Home in McComb handled arrangements.

Mr. Welch was born May 6, 1956, in Magnolia. He was the son of Harvey Lee and Clarice Richmond Welch.
He was a Ford automobile technician who strived for quality and excellent service. He earned several certificates and honors for his superior work in the Ford industry and was known for taking care of his family, friends and customers’ vehicles for many years. He was a hard worker, having worked since the age of 15. He also was an avid hunter and gardener.

He was preceded in death by his father and a grandson, Wade Michael Welch.

Survivors include his mother, Clarice Richmond Welch of Osyka; two sons and daughters-in-law, Joey and Sandy Welch of Zachary, La., and Brad and Crystal Welch of Denham Springs, La.; a daughter and son-in-law, Dana and B.J. Tesch of Denham Springs; a granddaughter, Mikayla Welch of Denham Springs; four grandsons, Hunter and Seth Welch of Zachary, and Joe and Case Welch of Denham Springs; the mother of his children, Despo White of Baton Rouge; three sisters and two brothers-in-law, Patsy and Mike Bowman of Vicksburg, Carolyn Boyd of Osyka and Connie and Wendell Williams of Magnolia; four brothers and a sister-in-law, Thad and Tammy Welch and Cecil Welch, all of Osyka, and Ricky Welch and Jason Welch of Brookhaven; seven nieces, Tanya Tedder and Michelle Rayborn, both of Vicksburg, Amanda Whatley of Lucedale, Julie Delette of Osyka, Heather Allen, Chrissy Edwards and Betsy Williams, all of Magnolia; two nephews, David Billeaudeau of McComb and Daniel “P-Nut” Boyd of Osyka; and numerous other nieces and nephews.

Pallbearers were Daniel “P-Nut” Boyd, David Billeaudeau, Allen Whatley, Curtis Allen, Duane Dycus, Will Blackwell, John Keenan and James Womack. Honorary pallbearer was Shelby Murray.

Mrs. O.B. Lampton

Mrs. O.B. Lampton, 76, of Tylertown, died June 12, 2009, at her home, after a sudden illness.

Services are noon Saturday at Antioch Baptist Church in Tylertown,. Elder Wiley Quinn Jr. will officiate, and burial will be in Magee’s Creek Cemetery in Tylertown. Craft Funeral Home in McComb is handling arrangements.Mrs. Lampton was born Sept. 4, 1932, in Tylertown, to Howard and Hattie Simmons Elzey.

She was a homemaker and a member of Tylertown First Baptist Church.

Mrs. Lampton was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, J.B. Lampton; two sons, three sisters and four brothers.

Survivors include four daughters, Betty Robey and Theresa Martin, both of Baton Rouge, Juanita Quinn of Hattiesburg and Dianne Causey of New Orleans; three sons, Levi Lampton of Clarksville, Tenn., Lloyd Lampton of Baton Rouge and Richard Lampton of Laurel, Md.; three sisters, Annie B. Howard of Tylertown and Darlene Elzey and Pearline Jackson of New Orleans; 22 grandchildren, 10 great-grandchildren and a host of nieces and nephews.

Bertha M. Carr

Bertha M. Carr, 94, of McComb, died June 10, 2009, at Southwest Mississippi Regional Medical Center.

Services are 7 p.m. Friday at Cook’s Enterprise Funeral Home, McComb. Burial is 9 a.m. Saturday in Pleasant Springs Church cemetery in Magnolia.

Mrs. Carr, a farmer and homemaker, was born March 4, 1915, in Pike County, daughter of the late Mardie Otis.

She was preceded in death by her mother and her husband, Willie Joe “Tan” Carr.

Survivors include a son and daughter-in-law, Michael and Dorothy Carr of Kentwood, La., a grandson, Te’Dron Carr of Kentwood; a granddaughter, Tameka Brown of Atlanta; a brother, Luther Wells of McComb; nine step-grandchildren, 25 step-great-grandchildren; and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, other relatives and friends.

Alton P. Travis Sr.

Alton Parker Travis Sr., 86, died June 15, 2009, at his home near Kentwood, La.

Services were 11 a.m. today at New Zion Baptist Church in Kentwood. The Revs. Gibbie McMillian and Richard Sandberg officiated. Burial was in New Zion Cemetery in Kentwood, with McKneely Funeral Home in Kentwood in charge.

Mr. Travis was born May 17, 1923, in Kentwood, to Walter and Netty Travis.

He was a U.S. Navy veteran of World War II.

Mr. Travis was preceded in death by his wife, Eliza Easley Travis; a daughter, Diane A. Hughes; his parents; three brothers, Lee, E.D. and Lige Travis; and three sisters, Ethel Travis, Marie Blades and Rosa Travis.

Survivors include a son, Alton P. Travis Jr. and wife Linda; six grandchildren, Carrie Abadie King and husband Jeff, Ramona Abadie Bacino and husband Jeff, Elizabeth Hughes Smith and husband John, Fannie Hughes Allen and husband David, Sutton Taylor Travis and wife Stephanie, and Cullyn Lea Travis; seven great-grandchildren, Eli Allen, Samuel Smith, Allie Smith, Savana Allen, Jordan Allen, Sophia Bacino and Joseph Bacino; two brothers, Winfred and Billy Travis, both of Kentwood; and a sister, Dorothy Hughes of Kentwood.

Diane Windham

Frances Diane Windham, 60, of Liberty, died June 17, 2009, at her residence, after a lengthy illness.

Visitation is 5 to 9 p.m. Friday at Brown Funeral Home in Gloster and 9 a.m. Saturday until services there at 10 a.m. The Revs. Jack Whittington and Danny Cook will officiate. Burial will be in New Hope Cemetery near Gloster.

Mrs. Windham was born March 21, 1949, in Amite County. She was the daughter of the late Barney B. Rollinson and the late Christine Whittington Rollinson.

She was a homemaker. Her family said she was a lovely wife, mother, grandmother and friend.

Survivors include her husband of 41 years, Freddie Windham; a son, Freddie L. Windham; a daughter, Deonna L. Windham; two grandsons, Justin L. Windham and Matthew Anderson; a granddaughter, Mikaylah Anderson; a sister, Eva Etheridge and husband Bob; a brother, Horace “Scottie” Rollinson and wife Annette; and many nieces, nephews and friends, including a special friend, Linda Walsh.

Bobbie J. Gatlin

Mrs. Bobbie J. Gatlin, 80, of Summit, died June 18, 2009, at McComb Extended Care in McComb.

Visitation is 9 a.m. Friday until services at 11 at Jones Family Funeral Services. Dr. Barry Ward will officiate. Burial will be in Hollywood Cemetery.

Katie Mae McEwen

Katie Mae Guy McEwen, 100, of Tylertown, died there June 10, 2009, at Billdora Nursing Home.

Visitation is 10 a.m. Saturday at Pleasant Valley C.O.G.I.C. until services there at 11 a.m. The Rev. Tom Bailey will officiate. Burial will be in Pleasant Grove M.B. Church Cemetery, with Peoples Undertaking Co. in McComb in charge of arrangements.

Mrs. McEwen was born July 19, 1908, in Holmesville, to Sammy and Mae Rosie Thornton Guy.

She was a devoted wife to the late Taft McEwen and enjoyed cooking and feeding her family and friends when they visited. She let students live with her to attend Rose Hill High School. She was a lady who spoke her mind, enjoyed laughter and could tell a joke. She was a farmer and gardener at heart.

Survivors include a godson, Don Riggins of Tylertown; two nephews and their wives, Robert and Inez Downs of Tylertown, and Willie and Juanita Downs of Chicago; four nieces and their husbands, Rosie and Matthew Payton, and Ruby Dillon, all of Chicago, Lula Caveral of Richmond Park, Ill., and Katie and William Forrest of Vallejo, Calif.; and a host of great-nieces, great-nephews, other relatives, church family and friends.
