Mary Gowdy

Mary Gowdy, 65, of Meridian, died there June 12, 2009, at Rush Hospital, after a brief illness.

Visitation is 11 a.m. Friday at True Light Baptist Church in Hattiesburg until services at noon. The Rev. Archie Morris II will officiate. Burial will be noon Saturday in Community Cemetery in Faunsdale, Ala. Craft Funeral Home in McComb is in charge of arrangements.

Ms. Gowdy, a homemaker, was born Feb. 23, 1944, in Bessemer, Ala. She was the daughter of Rebecca Weatherspoon Wimberly of Hattiesburg and the late Lorenzo Gowdy.

Survivors are her mother; three sisters, Sallie Birmingham of Memphis, Tenn., Shelia Varnado and husband Fredrick of Hattiesburg, and Debra Wimberly of Cleveland, Ohio; and two brothers and sisters-in-law, Melvin and Ellen Gowdy of Cleveland and Nathaniel Wimberly and Sandra of Dayton, Ohio.

Elbert D. Smith

Elbert D. Smith, 73, of New Orleans, died there June 12, 2009, at Tulane University Hospital.

Visitation is 6 p.m. Friday at Greater Evergreen Baptist Church in New Orleans until services there at 7:30 p.m., with Pastor Terrance Ranson officiating. Burial will be in Bethlehem M.B. Church Cemetery in the Darbun community, under the direction of Washington Funeral Home of Tylertown.

Mr. Smith, a longshoreman, was born July 31, 1935, in New Orleans, to George and Robbie Mae Holly Smith.

He was preceded in death by his parents; wife, Amelia Lee Carney Smith; brother, George Smith Jr.; and brother-in-law, Wiley Denson.

Survivors include two sons, Elbert D. Smith Jr. of New Orleans and Lyle Smith of New York, N.Y.; a daughter, Renee Smith of Vallejo, Calif.; a grandchild, Keisha MacLaughlin of Atlanta; three brothers-in-law and their wives, Isiah and Dessie Ulmer of Tylertown, Arthur Lee and Velma Carney of Vallejo, Calif., and Jewel and Ruby Carney of New Orleans; and a sister-in-law, Doris Denson of San Landro, Calif.

William Wolbrecht

William “Bill” Oliver Wolbrecht, 73, of Pasadena, Texas and formerly of Magnolia, died June 17, 2009, at his residence in Pasadena.

Arrangements are incomplete at Claire Brothers Funeral Home in Houston.

X.A. Robertson

X.A. Robertson, 72, of Tylertown, died there June 14, 2009, at Walthall County General Hospital.

Visitation is 11 a.m. to 6 p.m. Friday at Washington Funeral Home of Tylertown. Services are 1 p.m. Saturday at Lee’s Chapel M.B. Church, with the Rev. Ellis Warren officiating. Burial will be in the church cemetery.

Mr. Robertson, a farmer, was born May 20, 1937, in Tylertown, to Lonnie and Cora Lee Robertson.

He was preceded in death by his parents, six brothers and six sisters.

Survivors include his wife, Betty Robertson; nine children and their spouses, Steven Robertson and Willie Mae, X.A. Robertson Jr. and Kashmia, Clay Robertson and Karisma, Juette Martin and Wayne, Glinda Lenoir and Earl, Essie Mingo and Taina and Noema Walker and Jewlaska, all of Tylertown, Lavern Bickham and Deborah and Linda Dillon and Reginald, all of Franklin, La.; a brother, W.J. Robertson of Tylertown; two sisters, Vergie Lee Guy and Alberta Manuel, both of Jackson; and a host of grandchildren, great-grandchildren, nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.

Reid Rushing

Reid Rushing, 62, of McComb, died June 17, 2009, at Ochsner Hospital in New Orleans.

Arrangements are incomplete at Hartman-Sharkey Funeral Home in McComb.

Joyce Isaac Mathis

Joyce M. Isaac Mathis. 62, of Memphis, Tenn., and formerly of McComb, died June 16, 2009, at Methodist George Town Hospital in Memphis.

Arrangements are incomplete with Cook’s Enterprise Funeral Home in McComb in charge.

Aubrey L. Welch

Aubrey Lee Welch, 53, of Osyka, died June 16, 2009, at University Medical Center in Jackson.
Services were 11 a.m. today at Terry’s Creek Baptist Church, with Bro. Wendell Williams and the Rev. Todd Sumrall officiating. Burial was in Terry’s Creek Cemetery. Hartman-Sharkey Funeral Home in McComb handled arrangements.

Mr. Welch was born May 6, 1956, in Magnolia. He was the son of Harvey Lee and Clarice Richmond Welch.

He was a Ford automobile technician who strived for quality and excellent service. He earned several certificates and honors for his superior work in the Ford industry and was known for taking care of his family, friends and customers’ vehicles for many years. He was a hard worker, having worked since the age of 15. He also was an avid hunter and gardener.

He was preceded in death by his father and a grandson, Wade Michael Welch.

Survivors include his mother, Clarice Richmond Welch of Osyka; two sons and daughters-in-law, Joey and Sandy Welch of Zachary, La., and Brad and Crystal Welch of Denham Springs, La.; a daughter and son-in-law, Dana and B.J. Tesch of Denham Springs; a granddaughter, Mikayla Welch of Denham Springs; four grandsons, Hunter and Seth Welch of Zachary, and Joe and Case Welch of Denham Springs; the mother of his children, Despo White of Baton Rouge; three sisters and two brothers-in-law, Patsy and Mike Bowman of Vicksburg, Carolyn Boyd of Osyka and Connie and Wendell Williams of Magnolia; four brothers and a sister-in-law, Thad and Tammy Welch and Cecil Welch, all of Osyka, and Ricky Welch and Jason Welch of Brookhaven; seven nieces, Tanya Tedder and Michelle Rayborn, both of Vicksburg, Amanda Whatley of Lucedale, Julie Delette of Osyka, Heather Allen, Chrissy Edwards and Betsy Williams, all of Magnolia; two nephews, David Billeaudeau of McComb and Daniel “P-Nut” Boyd of Osyka; and numerous other nieces and nephews.
Pallbearers were Daniel “P-Nut” Boyd, David Billeaudeau, Allen Whatley, Curtis Allen, Duane Dycus, Will Blackwell, John Keenan and James Womack. Honorary pallbearer was Shelby Murray.

Reid Rushing Jr.

Milton Reid Rushing Jr., 62, of Summit, died June 17, 2009, at Ochsner Hospital in New Orleans.
Visitation is 5 to 8 tonight at Hartman-Sharkey Funeral Home in McComb, then 10 a.m. Saturday until services there at 11. Burial will be in Tylertown Cemetery.

Mr. Rushing was born Sept. 14, 1946, in Tylertown. He was the son of Merle Rushing and the late Milton Rushing Sr.

He was partners with his son, Ron, in a real estate investment company, and they worked closely together every day.

His family said, “Reid was a man of many ideas and many business ventures. He was a devoted husband, loving father and loyal friend. He was a very compassionate and giving man who believed in people. He taught his children to always find the good in the world, as he always found the good in them. He loved his children and family dearly and would do anything to help them.

“Reid never met a stranger. He was a funny man, always ready to share a joke and laugh with anyone. Many people loved and respected Reid and valued his opinions and knowledge. He was a loving husband to his best friend, Betty Ann. He shared many cherished moments with his children that will never be forgotten. He was also a wonderful, ‘Poppa,’ to all his precious grandbabies.
“Reid was anything other than ordinary — one of a kind — and no one will ever be able to fill his shoes. Many of us are in debt to this very special person and are thankful for the time we had with him here. He is already greatly missed by his friends and family.”

He was preceded in death by his sister, Peggy; a brother, Bruner; and his father.

Survivors include wife, Betty Ann Rushing; a son and daughter-in-law, Ron and Von Rushing; a daughter and son-in-law, Sarah Leigh and Paul Haney; two stepdaughters and their husbands, Keri and Tom Gatlin and Katie and Podgie Temple; five grandchildren, Joey, Taylor, Burke, Lola and Maggie; his mother, Merle; a brother, Doug; five sisters, Gloria, Opal, Alice Faye, Kay and Tanya; and many nieces and nephews.

Pallbearers will be Steve Rushing, Alan Bridevaux, Les Lampton, Podgie Temple, Heath Rushing, Slade Rushing, McNeil Mitchell and Phillip Mantel. Honorary pallbearers are Doug Rushing, Tommy Hart, Barry Hart, Bill Lampton, Gayden Smith and Mickey Santangelo.

Charles E. Dawson

Charles Edward Dawson, 69, of Chicago, died there June 15, 2009. Services are noon Saturday at Terry’s Creek Baptist Church. The Rev. Marlon Henderson, pastor, will officiate. Burial will be in Dawson Family Cemetery. Cook’s Enterprise Funeral Home in McComb is in charge of arrangements.
Mr. Dawson was born July 11, 1939, in Magnolia, the second child of the late Tommie and Alice Nunnery Dawson.

He was educated in public schools in Pike and Amite Counties and attended Alcorn State University. He accepted Christ at an early age and was baptized at Terry’s Creek Baptist Church under the pastorate of the late Rev. Wallace Jackson. He later moved to Chicago, where he met and married his bride of 47 years. He was employed with Milles Equipment/B.W. Supply and retired after 36 years of service. He re-entered the work force as a bus driver for Chicago Public School System until his health began to fail.

His family said, “His captivating smile and sense of humor drew many people into his life. His Mississippi roots and upbringing were the source of his love for fishing, hunting, gardening and having cookouts. Fun and folly with his family and friends were his signature trademark.”

Survivors include his wife, Bertha Robinson Dawson of Chicago; two sons and a daughter-in-law, Charles Dawson Jr. of Killeen, Texas. and Ret. Sgt. Tyrone Dawson and Adrian of Hope Miles, N.C.; three daughters and two sons-in-law, Roshawn and Sam Giwa, and Darlene and Leonard Thompson, all of Chicago, and Mary Charlene Gardner of Lawton, Okla.; six grandchildren, Tyrees, Brandon, Bradley, Ashley, Lenise and Asisa; two great-grandchildren, Jalen and LaNyah; two brothers and sisters-in-law, Tommie Dawson Jr. and Helen of Chicago and Leslie and Dorothy Dawson of Magnolia; seven sisters and three brothers-in-law, Irma Palmer, and Helen Catherine and Henry Banks, all of Chicago, Norma Holloway of Magnolia, Ruby and Henry Ratliff and Delois Dawson, all of Pacifica, Calif., Pearl Porter and Shirley and Jerome Trevillion, all of Houston, Texas; five sisters-in-law, six brothers-in-law, many cherished nieces, nephews, cousins, other relatives and friends.

Karen T. Reynolds

Karen T. Reynolds, 61, of Meadville, died June 18, 2009, at University Medical Center in Jackson.
Services are 2 p.m. today at Bude Baptist Church. Burial will be in Antioch Baptist Church Cemetery, Hazlehurst. Franklin Funeral Home of Meadville is in charge or arrangements.

She was born July 21, 1947, at Hazlehurst, daughter of Sidney and Helen Douglas Thompson.

She was a homemaker, a member of Daughters of the American Revolution, Pine Burr Garden Club, and was active in the Franklin County 4-H Club and Morgan Fork Coon Hunting Association. She was a longtime member of Antioch Baptist Church.

She was expecting her first grandchild, AubreaAnn Rosa Reynolds, in September.

She was preceded in death by her parents and her father-in-law, Alfred Reynolds.
Mrs. Reynolds is survived by her husband, Ray Reynolds of Meadville; two sons and daughters-in-law, Randy and Sherry Reynolds of Meadville and Ronnie and Marnie Reynolds of Byars, Okla.; two brothers and sisters-in-law, Kevin and Christy Thompson, and Booky and Kim Thompson, all of Hazlehurst; two sisters and brothers-in-law, Susie and Billy Jackson of Bassfield, and Judy and Ronnie Lea of Sontag; grandchildren, Alyse Reynolds of Meadville, Sgt. Aaron Musick of Bomholder, Germany, Asa Musick of Alexandria, La., and Reece, Reid and Rylee Reynolds of Byars; her mother-in-law, Katie Reynolds of Meadville; and her favorite pet, Sampson.

Pallbearers will be Pat Larkin, Mike Priest, Mike Zumbro, Glen Zumbro, Bubba Thompson, Tuffy Thompson, Wesley Ratcliff and Phillip Godbold.

Doris M. Dunigan

Doris McManus Dunigan, 79, of McCall Creek, died June 21, 2009, at Natchez Regional Hospital.
Visitation is 5 to 8 tonight at Franklin Funeral Home in Meadville, then 9 a.m. Wednesday at McCall Creek Church of God until services there at 10:30 a.m. The Rev. Kenneth Smith and the Rev. Eddie King will officiate, and burial will be in the church cemetery.

Mrs. Dunigan was born Nov. 20, 1929, in Franklin County, to Aaron and Annie Anderson McManus.

She was a homemaker and a member of McCall Creek Church of God.

She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Hiram E. Dunigan; three siblings and a granddaughter, Dee Dunigan.

Survivors include two sons and daughters-in-law, Jimmie and Marilyn Dunigan of Gonzales, La., and Paul and Marty Dunigan of Bude; a daughter and son-in-law, Sherry and Noel Melton of Natchez; a brother, Howell McManus of Natchez; 11 grandchildren, 25 great-grandchildren and two great-great-grandchildren.
Pallbearers will be grandsons and great-grandsons.
