Marie Pickering

Marie “Ma Pick” Pickering, 89, of Bude, died June 29, 2009, at Mississippi Baptist Hospital in Jackson.

Visitation will be from 5 to 9 tonight at Franklin Funeral Home in Meadville and will continue at 10 a.m. Thursday at Pentecostal Lighthouse until services there at 11 a.m.

The Rev. Lanse Foster, the Rev. Lynn Oglesby, the Rev. Shannon Martin and the Rev. Brian Foster will officiate, and burial will be in Midway Cemetery in Meadville.

Mrs. Pickering was born April 1, 1920, in Franklin County. She was the daughter of Emmitt and Mamie Wells Johnston.

She was a homemaker and member of Pentecostal Lighthouse.

Mrs. Pickering was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Levon Pickering; and a son, James Russell Pickering.

Survivors include one son and daughter-in-law, Lynn and Angie Pickering of Jackson; two daughters and sons-in-law, Peggy and Billy Maples of Jackson, La., and Margaret and Donald Foster of Raymond; one brother, Emmitt Johnston of McComb; one stepbrother, Floyd Wilkinson of Smithdale; one stepsister, Mildred Sasser of Bogue Chitto; eight grandchildren and 13 great-grandchildren.

Pallbearers will be Braxton Foster, Rodney Foster, Terry Maples, Tim Maples, Justin Maples, Jeremy Maples, Spencer Pickering and Ricky Johnston.

Honorary pallbearers will be Calvin Foster and Paul Dixon.

Desmond A. Brown

Desmond A. Brown, 18, of McComb, died June 30, 2009, at Southwest Mississippi Regional Medical Center.

Arrangements are incomplete with Craft Funeral Home in McComb in charge.

Charles E. Singleton Sr.

Charles E. Singleton Sr., 72, of Los Angeles, died June 24, 2009, at St. Francis Hospital in Lynwood, Calif., after a brief illness.

Arrangements are incomplete with Craft Funeral Home in McComb in charge.

Hugh Lee Dillon Sr.

Hugh Lee Dillon Sr., 91, of Franklinton, La., and formerly of McComb, died June 23, 2009, at Gulf State Hospital in Covington, La.

Visitation is 5 to 8 p.m. today at Cook’s Enterprise Funeral Home in McComb. Services are 11 a.m. Thursday at Dillon Hill Church of God in Christ. Supt. Acey Walker, pastor, will officiate. Burial will be in the church cemetery.

Mr. Dillon was born July 24, 1917, in Pike County, to John and Payola Hampton Dillon.

He retired from American Box and Crate Co. in Fernwood. He was a devoted Christian man and served as a deacon early in his years, starting at Mount Vernon Baptist Church and later joining Dillon Hill C.O.G.I.C.

He served in the U.S. Navy during World War II and did a tour of duty overseas. He loved to do woodwork in his free time.

Mr. Dillon was preceded in death by his parents; four siblings, Otis, Edna and Wilfred Dillon and Johnny Mae Miskell; his former wife, Hattie Mae Dillon; a son, Wilfred Dillon; and a grandchild, Michele.

Survivors include his loving wife, Francis Smith Dillon of Franklinton; four children, Hugh “Skip” Dillon Jr. and wife Annette of Vacaville, Calif., Cynthia Dillon Allen of Oakland, Calif., Angela Antoine of Las Vegas and John Powells of Franklinton; six grandchildren, Ann, Eric, Karen, Danyel, Shannon and Cassandra; 10 great-grandchildren, one great-great-grandchild and a host of other relatives and friends.

Milton Travis

Milton Travis, 50, of McComb, died July 4, 2009, at his residence.
Jones Family Funeral Services of McComb has charge of arrangements, which are incomplete.

Milton D. Travis, 50, of McComb, died July 4, 2009, at his residence.

Visitation was 11 a.m. today at Jones Family Funeral Services in McComb until services there at 1 p.m., with the Rev. Dennis Walker officiating. Burial will be announced at a later date.

Mr. Travis was born Oct. 6, 1958, in Baton Rouge, to James Alton and Virginia Huff Travis.
He was a heavy equipment operator. He was of the Baptist Faith and loved to fish. He will be sadly missed by all.

Mr. Travis was preceded in death by his father and a brother, Jack K. Adams Jr.

Survivors include his wife, Valeri Vaca; his mother Virginia; a son, Cody Travis; two stepdaughters, Stacy and Ranell; two brothers and a sister-in-law, Eugene Travis and Alton and Grace Travis; two nieces, Shiela Travis and Briana Robinson; and two nephews, Troy Travis and his wife Melanie and Alton “Randy” Travis Jr.

Carmen Blackwell

Carmen Dunn Blackwell, 88, of McComb, died July 4, 2009, at Lawrence County Nursing Home in Monticello.

Visitation was 5 to 8 p.m. Monday and 9 to 10 a.m. today at Hartman-Sharkey Funeral Home in McComb. Graveside services were 10:30 a.m. today in Hollywood Cemetery, with Dr. Ken Kirk officiating.

Mrs. Blackwell was born April 26, 1921, to Robert Louis and Willie Eva Mullins Dunn.

She had lived in McComb for 68 years and was a member of North McComb Baptist Church, where she taught Sunday School and was a primary member since 1950.Mrs. Blackwell was preceded in death by her parents, Robert Louis Dunn and Willie Eva Mullins Dunn; her husband, M.H. “Black” Blackwell; a son, Phillip Blackwell; three brothers, Carroll, Lee and Felix Dunn; and four sisters, Lucille Belding, Louise Brister, Melissa Fortenberry and Marie Brister.

Survivors include a son and daughter-in-law, Ward and Gail Blackwell of Brookhaven; one daughter, Sheila Blackwell of McComb; one daughter-in-law, Sherry Blackwell of Baton Rouge; her grandchildren, Michele Blackwell Walley of Baton Rouge, and Cain Blackwell and wife Abby of Pasadena, Fla.; step-grandchildren, Jessica Jordan and husband Landon and Sawyer Smith of Brookhaven; and one great-granddaughter, Jordan Walley of Baton Rouge.

Pallbearers are Percy Quin Brister, Gwen Brister, Weldon Fortenberry Jr., Brad Belding, Bruce Hammons and Jim Falgout. Honorary pallbearers are John T. Hammons, Ernie Hammons, Cain Blackwell, Billy Morgan, Dr. Jim Stephens and Sawyer Smith.

Alice Ray Smith

Alice “Alma” Ray Smith, 79, of Summit, died July 1, 2009, at Southwest Mississippi Regional Medical Center.

Services were 1 p.m. today at Terry’s Creek Baptist Church, with the Rev. Marlon Henderson, pastor, officiating. Burial is in the church cemetery. Cook’s Enterprise Funeral Home in McComb is in charge of arrangements.

Mrs. Smith was born Feb. 18, 1930, in Amite County, to George and Nancy Thompson.

Mrs. Smith was preceded in death by two sisters, Stella Robinson and Dorothy Harness; a brother, Charles Thompson; and a granddaughter, Chaundra Davis.

Survivors include five daughters and four sons-in-law, Lottie and Larry Shaw, and Shirley Rowsey, all of Milwaukee, Georgia Craig-Davis and Oreadis, and Vivian Canady-Byrd and Rodney, all of Rockford, Ill., and Sandra and Kevin Garrett of Victorville, Calif.; three sons, Andrew Smith of Rockford, Ill., Charles Smith of Milwaukee and Ronald Smith and wife Mary of Racine, Wis.; four sisters and two brothers-in-law, Louise and Nolan Felder of Kenner, La., Phyllis Freeman of Albany, Calif., Lanell White of Milwaukee and Myrtis and O.C. Lee of Magnolia; three brothers and two sisters-in-law, Percy and Shirley Thompson and David and Charlene Thompson, all of Magnolia, and Prince Harrell Thompson of New Orleans; 24 grandchildren, 54 great-grandchildren and a host of niece, nephews, other relatives and friends.

Derrick L. Brim

Derrick Lamont Brim, 48, of McComb, died of natural causes July 3, 2009, at his residence.

Elder Sam Burton, 94, of Magnolia, died July 4, 2009, at McComb Nursing and Rehab Center.

Louis Jackson Jr.

Louis Jackson, 53, of Tylertown, drowned July 5, 2009, in the Bogue Chitto River.

Tra’Darius D. Osbey

Tra’Darius D. Osbey, 38 days old, of McComb, died July 4, 2009, at Southwest Mississippi Regional Medical Center, after a sudden illness.

Visitation is 11:30 a.m. Thursday at Craft Funeral Home in McComb until services there at 1 p.m. The Rev. Robert Mathis will officiate. Burial will be in Tangipahoa Freewill Baptist Church Cemetery.

Tra’Darius was born May 27, 2009, in McComb. He was the son of Tramaine Osbey and Kimberly R. Luckett, both of McComb.
Tra’Darius was preceded in death by his great-grandparents, J.C. Johnson and Mildred Y. McComb; and grandfather, Tharrell Eugene Felder.

Survivors include his parents; two brothers, Christopher D. Luckett and Tra’Maine Osbey Jr., both of McComb; a sister, Tra’Myiah L. Osbey of McComb; maternal grandparents, Rosalyn and Henrene Harris of McComb, Kimmy and Chander Tasha Johnson of McComb and Dorothy Simmons of Magnolia; his godmother, Francie Herrington of McComb; great-grandparents, David and Janice Mullins of Summit; an aunt, Alexis Simmons of Magnolia; great-aunt, Shelia Johnson of Brandon; two uncles, Takoy Felder and Kimmel Johnson of Summit; and a host of other aunts, uncles,cousins and loved ones.
