Channie C. Leonard

Channie L. Cameron Leonard, 58, of McComb, died Dec. 1, 2009, at University Medical Center in Jackson after a brief illness.

Visitation is 6 to 8 p.m. Friday at Peoples Undertaking Co. in McComb, with family hour from 5 to 6 p.m. Services are 11 a.m. Saturday at Denwiddie Street Church of Christ in McComb, with Bro. Anthony M. Johnson officiating. Burial will be in Dinah Cemetery in McComb.

Mrs. Leonard was born Aug. 29, 1951, in Franklin County, to Dorsey Cameron Sr. and Oris W. Cameron.

She was disabled and had worked for Kellwood Company for 20 years.

Mrs. Leonard was preceded in death by her parents; two sisters, Ada Lee Barnes and Velma Louise Cameron; and a brother-in-law, Wilmer Quinn.

Survivors include two sons, Dedrick Cameron Sr. and wife Nita, and Broderick Leonard and his fianceé Takesha of McComb; two daughters and sons-in-law, Kendra and Rasheem Wright and Latasha Simmons and Devon Sr., all of Cheyenne, Wyo.; 10 grandchildren, Delteisha, Christian, Yasmin, Nyah, Kennedy, Devon Jr., Willie, Darius, Dedrick Jr. and Xzavion; an exchange student who was like a grandson, Tom Lau; three sisters and two brothers-in-law, Ethel Quinn of Brandon, Inez and Joe Porter of Laurel, and Virginia and Bob McCray, all of McComb; five brothers and sisters-in-law, Dorsey Cameron Jr. and Margie of Brookhaven, Ellis and Ann Cameron and Fred and Pearlystine Cameron, all of McComb, Douglas and Ruby Cameron of Chatawa and M.D. and Mae Cameron of Tupelo; a godsister, Gloria Lull of Gulfport; three aunts, Cora Lee Davis of McComb, Ethel Mae Charleston of Jackson and Icie Weatherspoon of Bude; and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, other relatives, church family and friends.

James Brister

James Brister, 89, of Jayess, died Dec. 9, 2009, at his residence.

Visitation is 5 to 9 tonight at New Bethel Jesus Name Church, then 10 a.m. Friday until services there at 2 p.m. Bro. Larry Reed, Bro. Gary Robinson and Bro. Bobby Joe Lambert will officiate. Burial will be in Enon Cemetery, under the direction of Hartman-Sharkey Funeral Home of McComb.

Mr. Brister was born Dec. 3, 1920, to Clarence Ado and Mary Magdalene Rushing Brister.

He was a member of New Bethel Jesus Name Church and was a veteran of the U.S. Army.

His family said he was the best slingshot maker in McComb, and was sure that his slingshots have made it to places like England, California and the rest of the world.

He had a giving heart and always said, “Why make someone feel bad, when you can make them feel good?”

Mr. Brister was preceded in death by his parents; a son, James Ray Brister; a daughter, Dolly Ruth Brister; two sisters and four brothers.

Survivors include his wife of 68 years, Ruby King Brister; four sons and two daughters-in-law, Johnnie and Bonnie Brister of Columbia, Jerome and Linda Brister of Tylertown, and Jerry Lee Brister and Randy Brister both of Jayess; four daughters and two sons-in-law, Janet Brister and Faye and James Dunaway, all of Jayess, Bonnie and Arlie Lambert of Kokomo and Rosa Lee Ivy of Magnolia; a brother, David Lynn Brister of Jayess; three sisters, Mary Grace Moak of Summit, Patsy Ruth of Jack Creek, Tenn., and Claudine Saavedra of Jayess; 14 grandchildren, 19 great-grandchildren and three great-great grandchildren.

Pallbearers will be Jimmy Brister, Johnnie Brister, Daniel Brister, Timothy Brister, Tony Brister, Carrol Farve, Nick Lambert and Isaac Dunaway. Honorary pallbearers will be Jerry Fuller, James Fuller and David Lynn Brister.

Thomas C. ‘T.C.’ Evans

Thomas Charles “T.C.” Evans, 83, of Summit, died May 28, 2000, at Beacham Memorial Hospital in Magnolia.

Visitation is 6-9 p.m. Tuesday at Hartman Funeral Home of McComb, and 9 a.m. Wednesday until services in the funeral home chapel at 10:30 a.m. The Rev. Bob Lynch will officiate. Burial will be in Hollywood Cemetery in McComb.

Mr. Evans was born Feb. 12, 1917, in Amite, La. He was the son of Frank Edward Evans and Mary Lou Weaks Evans.

He was a retired conductor with Illinois Central Gulf Railroad, and a member of Central Baptist Church. He was a member of United Transportation Union.

Mr. Evans was preceded in death by his parents; two brothers, Homer and Frank Evans; and one sister, Helen Latino.

Survivors include his wife, Dorothy “Dot” Evans of Summit; one son, Dr. Thomas C. Evans Jr. of McComb; and a number of nieces and nephews.

Bilbo Reed

Bilbo Reed, 90, of the Montgomery community in Lincoln County, died of respiratory failure May 28, 2000, at his residence.

Visitation is 5-9 tonight at Catchings Funeral Home in McComb, and 9 a.m. Tuesday until services in the funeral home chapel at 10 a.m. The Rev. Jerry Sullivan will officiate. Burial will be in Woodlawn Cemetery in Summit.

Mr. Reed was born Oct. 15, 1909, in Oktibbeha County. He was the son of Jessie L. Reed and Martha Kimball Reed.

He was a retired planer operator for Seago Lumber Co. in McComb, where he worked for 20 years. He attended Pleasant Ridge Pentecostal Church in Brookhaven.

Mr. Reed was preceded in death by his parents; his first wife, Mamie Fisher Reed; one daughter, Annette Reed; one grandson, Ricky Stevens; and one sister, Mittie Suber.

Survivors include his wife, Gladys Cruse Reed of Summit; four sons and one daughter-in-law, Ronnie and Lyvonne Reed and James Reed, all of Summit, Elvis Reed of Tupelo and Tim Reed of Brookhaven; four daughters and sons-in-law, Doris and Dave Rushing of Eupora, Mary and Lonnie Wylie of Greenville, and Patsy and Billy Carson and Peggy and Lewis Roja, all of Brookhaven; two brothers, Lloyd Reed and C.A. Reed, both of Mobile, Ala.; six sisters, Stella Mae Brooks and Bertha Hightower, both of Ackerman, Plummie Lee Dladry of Eupora, Annie Jewel Tabb of Houston, Virginia Shaivers of Mobile and Earline Miller of Mathiston; 24 grandchildren, 24 great-grandchildren and two great-great-grandchildren.

Pallbearers will be Jason Reed, James Reed Jr., Joe Martin, Billy Carson, Nickie Wylie and Mary Vance.

Virginia W. Bailey

Virginia Edith Weeks Bailey, 92, of the Barlow community, died May 27, 2000, at McComb Extended Care Center.

Services were 10 a.m. today at East Union Baptist Church in Magnolia, with the Rev. John Reed officiating. Burial was in the church cemetery. Hartman Funeral Home of McComb was in charge of arrangements.

Mrs. Bailey was born March 18, 1908, in Copiah County. She was the daughter of Allison F. Weeks and Florence Beulah Fore Weeks.

She was a homemaker and a member of Rehobeth Methodist Church in Barlow. She attended and was active in East Union Baptist Church.

Mrs. Bailey was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Lonzo B. Bailey; and two brothers, Allison F. Weeks and William Carey Weeks.

Survivors include two sisters and one brother-in-law, Vera Louise and Hollis T. Lang of Magnolia and Della Beulah Robinson of Nederland, Texas; two nieces, one nephew, three great-nieces and five great-nephews.

Pallbearers were Roy Lang, Allen Parnell, Snuffy Smith, Pymm West, Joey Allen and James Hucabee.

Elizabeth Johnston

Elizabeth Johnston, 51, of Jackson, died of cancer May 26, 2000, at her residence.

Visitation is 2-6 p.m. today at Wright & Ferguson Funeral Home in Jackson, and 10 a.m. Tuesday until services there at 11 a.m. Graveside services are 2 p.m. Tuesday at Hollywood Cemetery in McComb. Hartman Funeral Home of McComb is in charge of local arrangements.

Ms. Johnston was born Aug. 28, 1948, in New Orleans. She was the daughter of Willene Johnston of Jackson and the late Garvin H. Johnston, the last elected state superintendent of education in Mississippi.

Ms. Johnston was an education specialist for the Department of Family Medicine at the University of Mississippi Medical Center, where her main duties included training physicians in the practice of family medicine. She had several articles published in different journals of medicine and several medical school textbooks. She was a member of Beta Sigma Phi Social Sorority and M.E.N.S.A. She had lived in Jackson since 1976. She was a graduate of Poplarville High School and Pearl River Junior College. She graduated from Delta State University with a bachelor’s degree in education.

Survivors include her mother; one son, Philip Walley of Ridgeland; one daughter, Lisa Redditt of Mount Juliet, Tenn.; one sister, Bobette Holcomb of Tampa, Fla.; three grandchildren and several nieces, nephews and cousins.

Jimmie ‘Tina’ Goodwin

Jimmie Nell “Tina” Goodwin, 64, of Baker, La., died May 28, 2000, at Baton Rouge General Medical Center in Baton Rouge, La.

Visitation is 1 p.m. today at Brown Funeral Home in Gloster until memorial services there at 3 p.m. The Rev. Dennis Fink will officiate. Burial will be at Roseland Cemetery in Gloster.

Mrs. Goodwin was born Sept. 28, 1935, in Bogue Chitto. She was the daughter of Bernard Carter and Dera Fay Carter.

She retired in 1991 from Lockheed Missile and Space Co. in Sunnyvale, Calif.

Mrs. Goodwin was preceded in death by her parents; one son, Bernard “Butch” Ewing; and one brother, F. Lee Carter.

Survivors include one daughter, Fay Ayers of Baton Rouge; grandchildren, Jacob and Kaitlyn Ayers; two nephews, Rob Carter of Santa Rosa, Calif., and Randy Carter of Stockton, Calif.; two aunts, Clara Freeman of Picayune and Pearl McNeil of Gloster; and an abundance of loving cousins, including the Lawrence and Kyzar families.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the American Heart Association.

Carol S. Wimberly

Carol S. Wimberly, 93, of McComb and formerly of Corinth, died March 2, 2000, at her residence in McComb.

Visitation is 6-8 tonight at Hartman Funeral Home in McComb. Graveside services are 2 p.m. Saturday at Cedar Hill Cemetery in Scottsboro, Ala.

Mrs. Wimberly was born March 29, 1906, in Madison County, Ala. She was the daughter of Charles Alexander Stearnes and Nancy Chandler Stearnes.

She was a homemaker, and in her later years served as manager of East Corinth Elementary School Cafeteria. She was a member of First Methodist Church of Corinth.

She resided in McComb for the past three years. She had been active as a volunteer with the American Red Cross, working for many years in the blood donor program. She was also active with the Corinth Home Demonstration Club.

Mrs. Wimberly was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, L.E. Wimberly; two brothers, Kenner C. Stearnes and Charles Sloan Stearnes; and three sisters, Valeria Moses, Evelyn Patterson and Nannie Boyd Stearns.

Survivors include one son and daughter-in-law, Mike and Bonnie Wimberly of Summit; two daughters and sons-in-law, Sue and Bill Davis of St. Joseph, Mo., and Betty and Frank Davis of Killen, Ala.; nine grandchildren and their spouses, Sue Carol Duvall and Ron of Augusta, Ga., Jane Nold and Greg, Bill Davis Jr. and Kim, and Bobby Davis and Lorna, all of St. Joseph, Mo., Frank R. Davis Jr. of Ghana, Africa, Cindy O’Reilly and Tom of Columbia, Tenn., Marty Davis and Rhonda of Sumter, S.C., Michael Wimberly of Jackson and Ellen Wimberly of Cleveland; 17 great-grandchildren and one great-great-grandchild.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Centenary United Methodist Church in McComb.

Mable Cockerham

Mable Cockerham, 75, of Summit, died Feb. 25, 2000, at Southwest Mississippi Regional Medical Center.

Visitation is 10 a.m. Friday at Summit Baptist Church until services there at 2 p.m. Pastor Robert Vick will officiate. Burial will be in Greenlawn Cemetery in Summit.

Ms. Cockerham was born March 13, 1924, in Pike County. She was the daughter of Lee Cockerham and Mary Lee Anderson Cockerham.

She was a domestic worker. She was a member of Summit Baptist Church, where she was a Sunday school teacher until her health failed. She also served as secretary of the missionary society, church clerk, vocational Bible school teacher, janitor, senior choir member and community choir member.

Survivors include two sons, Alfred Marsalis and Lamar Cockerham, both of Atlanta; one sister, Mary C. Scott of McComb; one grandson, Lamar Cockerham Jr. of Atlanta; a special friend, Fred Marsalis of McComb; other special friends include, Eva Grace Butler of Summit, Amertine McComb of Summit, Alyene London of Summit, Martha Tillman of Summit, a devoted niece, Benetta Gilliam of Chicago; and a host of nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.
