Thelma M. McEwen

Thelma Inez Marshall Mc-Ewen, 88, of Pike County, died Sept. 30, 2000, at Walthall County General Hospital in Tylertown.

Visitation is 1-5 this afternoon at Peoples Funeral Home in McComb, continuing from 6-8 tonight at Rose Hill Missionary Baptist Church of Magnolia. Services are 1 p.m. Wednesday at the church with the Rev. Hezekiah Swanigan, pastor, officiating. Burial will be in Pleasant Grove Missionary Baptist Church Cemetery in Pike County.

Mrs. McEwen was born Feb. 6, 1912, in Pike County. She was the daughter of John Marshall and Lucille Magee Marshall.

She retired 18 years ago and had taught in three schools of Pike County for 41 years.

She joined Rose Hill Missionary Baptist Church at an early age, where she was a lifetime member of the Mission Society and head of the Historical Committee.

Her family said she devoted her life to Christ, and being a pastor’s wife, ministered to everyone that was in need.

She attended Rose Hill Elementary School. She was a member of the first 12th grade graduating class of Pike County Training School in Magnolia, and was the last surviving member of that class.

She received her bachelor of science degree from Alcorn College in Lorman.

She was a member of the following organizations: vice president and later president of the Women’s General Missionary Association, where she was a member for 20 years; secretary of the Pike County Sunday School Convention; the Retired Teacher’s Association of Pike County; and the CSB Lodge.

She was the “first lady” of several churches, a contributor and supporter of the Widows and Orphan Home and many other organizations.

Mrs. McEwen was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, the Rev. Houston McEwen; six brothers and three sisters.

Survivors include one sister, Vertis Varnado of Hattiesburg; two special nieces, Inez Richard and Clotide Barnes; and a host of other nieces, nephews, sisters-in-law, other relatives, church family, missionary sisters, brothers in Christ and dear friends.

‘Doc’ Fenn

Clinton “Doc” Fenn, 89, of Smithdale, died Oct. 2, 2000, at Beverly Healthcare Southwest in McComb of respiratory failure.

Visitation is 5-8 p.m. Tuesday at Catchings Funeral Home, continuing there at 9 a.m. Wednesday until services in the funeral home chapel at 10 a.m. The Rev. Billy Ray Simmons and the Rev. Mike Soesbe will officiate. Burial will be in Mars Hill Cemetery in Smithdale.

Mr. Fenn was born April 11, 1911, in Smithdale. He was the son of Claude Fenn and Bessie Holmes Fenn.

A retired farmer, he was a member of Mount Olive Baptist Church in Smithdale, where he also served as a deacon.

Mr. Fenn was preceded in death by his parents, five brothers, Eugene, Hilton, Wilbur, Edwin and C.L. Fenn; and two sisters, Audrey Fenn and Audelle Peyton.

Survivors include one sister, Mary Travis of Brookhaven; and numerous nieces, nephews and other family members and friends.

Pallbearers will be M.L. Wroten, Stephen Fenn, Paul Fenn, Dudley Fenn, Roy Carnegie Jr. and Michael Cameron.

Lucy Expose

Lucy Expose, 64, of Columbia died Oct. 1, 2000, in the Marion County Hospital.

Visitation will be 6-8 p.m. Wednesday at St. John National Baptist Church, continuing there at 10 a.m. Thursday until services at 11 a.m. with the Rev. Eddie C. Hartwell officiating. Burial will be in the church cemetery. Washington Funeral Home of Tylertown is in charge or arrangements.

Ms. Expose was born Dec. 2, 1935, in Columbia. She was the daughter of Paul and Ellen Bullock Expose Sr.

She belonged to St. John National Baptist Church, where she taught Sunday School. Ms. Expose had worked 13 years with Georgia-Pacific in Columbia and 28 years at New Orleans Furniture Co. in Columbia.

She was preceded in death by her parents, her former husband, Jessie Roy Lee; one daughter, Karen Lee; and two brothers, Paul Expose Jr. and Justice Expose.

Survivors include a daughter, Janice “Bobby” Jackson of Gulfport; one son, Michael Lee of Columbia; two brothers and sisters-in-law, Gene and Georgia Expose, and Howard and Inez Expose, all of Columbia; seven sisters and brothers-in-law, Bert and Marshall Florence, Beulah Expose, Eartha and Timothy Rushing, and Gail Expose Thompson all of Columbia, Myrlene Terrell of Jackson, Betty and Johnny B. Gholar of Oakvale and Geraldine Norwood of Jackson; four grandchildren, Chrissy Aikens and husband Jeremy of Columbia, Des-mond Lee of Mendenhall, Davon Lee of Columbia and Natalie Collins of Gulfport; and two great-grandchildren.

J. Keith Daniels

J. Keith Daniels, 51, of Pop-larville, died of brain hemorrhage Oct. 2, 2000, at Forrest General Hospital in Hattiesburg.

Visitation is 6-9 tonight at Wilson Funeral Home in Monticello. Visitation continues at 11 a.m. Wednesday in the Marvin R. White Coliseum at Pearl River Community College in Poplar-ville, until services there at 1 p.m.

Services will also be at 5 p.m. Wednesday at New Zion Baptist Church in Monticello, with the Rev. Blain McLain officiating. Burial will be in New Zion Baptist Church cemetery.

Mr. Daniels was born Oct. 26, 1948, in Natchez. He was the son of Vermell Daniels of Monticello and the late Joe Jolly Daniels.

He was head football coach and athletic director at Pearl River Community College. He was a member of First United Metho-dist Church in Poplarville.

Survivors include his mother; his wife, Charolette Hartzog Daniels of Poplarville; one daughter, Olivia Elizabeth “Sunny” Daniels of Poplarville; and one sister, Nell Rose Johnson of Clinton.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Pearl River Community College Development Foundation, football designation.

Merle Harper

Merle Harper, 95, of Gaines-ville, Texas, died Oct. 1, 2000, at Renaissance Care Center.

Visitation is 7-8 tonight at Geo. J. Carroll & Son Funeral Home in Gainesville. Services are 11 a.m. Wednesday at the funeral home chapel, with the Rev. J.L. Wil-liams officiating. Burial is 3:30 p.m. Wednesday in Edom Cemetery of Edom, Texas, with the Rev. Bobby Parker officiating.

Mrs. Harper was born April 28, 1905, in Edom. She was the daughter of Pete Farmer and Sula Brewer Farmer.

She was a retired teacher in Van Zandt County, Texas, and a member of First United Metho-dist Church of Mineral Wells, Texas.

She was a prayer warrior for the prayer ministry at First Baptist Church of Gainesville. Her family said she loved the Lord and served him well. She also was a life member of the Palo Pinto Hospital Auxiliary, having over 5,000 hours of volunteer service. She received a degree in education from Lon Morris College in Jacksonville, Texas in 1926.

Mrs. Harper was preceded in death by her parents; her husband who died May 19, 1980, Clyde H. Harper; one son, Clyde M. Harper who died in March 1997; three daughters, Paula Stroker who died in 1982, Gertie Benner who died in 1985 and Mary Hartford who died in 1995; and a grandson, Jon Harrington who died in 1994.

Survivors include one son and daughter-in-law, Cecil and Shir-ley Harper of Gainesville; one daughter and son-in-law, Bebe and Jim Harrington of Magnolia; one daughter-in-law, Ruth Harper of Mineral Wells; 16 grandchildren, 21 great-grandchildren and 14 great-great-grandchildren.

Pallbearers will be grandsons.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Home Hospice of Cooke County, P.O. Box 936, Gainesville, TX 76241.

William Freeman

William Freeman of Summit died Oct. 3, 2000, at his residence.

Arrangements are incomplete with Catchings Funeral Home of McComb in charge.

Edith M. Spang

Edith Morris Spang, 96, of LaBelle, Fla., and formerly of McComb, died Sept. 11, 2000, at Sun City Retirement Residence in Sun City Center, Fla.

Her ashes are interred in the Morris family plot in Atlanta, with National Cremation Society of Fort Myers, Fla., in charge of arrangements.

Mrs. Spang was born Nov. 3, 1903, in Atlanta. She was the daughter of Charles Morris and Alice Berta Morris of Atlanta.

She was a homemaker and an an active member of Episcopal Church of the Mediator until her husband’s retirement to LaBelle in 1968. She moved to McComb from New Orleans in 1941, and was a life member of the Junior Auxiliary and the Flower Lovers Club, both of McComb.

Mrs. Spang was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Henry Spang Sr., formerly of McComb; and two brothers and three sisters.

Survivors include one son and daughter-in-law, Henry and Rhoda Spang of LaBelle; four grandchildren, Dorothy Anderson of Minneapolis, Henry Spang III of Vancouver, Wash., Elizabeth Still of Ft. Myers, Fla., and Edith Spang of Los Angeles; and four great-grandchildren.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to a local Hospice Care.

William W. Freeman Sr.

William W. Freeman Sr., 78, of Summit, died of heart failure Oct. 3, 2000, at his residence.

Visitation is 6-9 tonight at Catchings Funeral Home in McComb, and 11 a.m. Thursday until services there at 2 p.m. The Rev. Walter Sisco will officiate. Burial will be at Montgomery Cemetery in Lincoln County.

Mr. Freeman was born Feb. 5 1922, in Summit. He was the son of Wren Freeman and Estelle Norton Freeman.

He was a retired farmer and a member of the Baptist faith. He was a U.S. Army veteran and served in Europe during World War II.

Mr. Freeman was preceded in death by his parents; one daughter, Kathy Lillie; one grandson, Tony Lillie; and a stepgranddaughter, Gwen Wilson Lagille.

Survivors include his wife of 55 years, Mary Etta Freeman of Summit; one son and daughter-in-law, William W. Freeman Jr. and Jimmie Freeman of Summit; one daughter and son-in-law, Etta Ruth and Kenneth Johnson of Summit; one stepson and wife, Deanon and Elaine Cleveland of Denham Springs, La.; two stepdaughters and their husbands, Lyndell and Bob Swan of Gillsburg and Dollie D. and Paul Wilson of Jayess; three brothers, Jack Freeman of Walker, La., and Mike and Donald Freeman, both of Summit; five sisters, Leonal Chisolm and Bobbie Carter, both of Walker, Inez Brown of Albany, La., Geneva Muirhead of Pearl and Shirley Chisholm of Denham Springs; four grandchildren, eight great-grandchildren, a number of stepgrandchildren, other relatives and friends.

Aubrey F. Williams

Aubrey F. Williams, 86, of Magnolia, died of heart failure Oct. 4, 2000, at Beacham Memorial Hospital.

Visitation is 9 a.m. Thursday at Catchings Funeral Home in McComb until services there at 11 a.m. The Rev. Justin Howell and the Rev. Crockett Kennedy will officiate. Burial will be in Bluff Springs Cemetery in Pike County.

Mr. Williams was born May 6, 1914, in Pike County. He was the son of Alva Felder Williams and Mary Sandifer Williams.

He was a sawmill owner and a member of Bluff Springs Baptist Church. He was a U.S. Army veteran of World War II.

Mr. Williams was preceded in death by his parents; three brothers, Nolan, Bill and Joel Williams; and two sisters, Era Grimes and Jewell Lee.

Survivors include his wife of 63 years, Anita Simmons Williams of Magnolia; two sons and one daughter-in-law, Mike and Kay Williams of Magnolia and Terry Williams of Athens, Ga.; three sisters, Alma Richmond of Tylertown, Lucille Crowder of Long Beach and Marie Smith of Brandon; two grandchildren, Shelly Williams of Magnolia and Scotty Williams of Laurel; and a number of nieces and nephews.
