John M. Furr

John M. Furr, 87, of Laurel, died Thursday, Aug. 10, 2006, at South Central Regional Medical Center in Laurel.

Funeral services will be held at 4 p.m. today, at Memory Chapel Funeral Home, with burial in Hickory Grove Cemetery in Laurel. Dr. Wade Rogers and the Rev. Tommy Davis will officiate.

He was a retired accountant and office manager for medalist industries. He served in the United States Army Air Corps during World War II, as a major with the 30th army as a pilot and instructor. He was a member and deacon of Hebron Baptist Church. He was a graduate of Bowling Green Business College, a member of Phi Kappa Alpha and past president and life member of the Laurel Exchange Club.

He was preceded in death by his first wife, Pauline Marsteller Furr; a daughter, Ann Kiick; two infant sons; a sister, Edith Shaw; and mother, Melne Booth.

He was a beloved father, grandfather and husband.

He is survived by his wife, Anice Gardinier Furr of Laurel; a son and daughter-in-law, John R. “Dickey” and Judy Furr of the Hebron community; a daughter and two sons-in-law, Mary Kay and Carlo Juliano of the Calhoun community and John Kiick of the Calhoun community; six grandchildren, Ricky Furr, Scott Furr, Chris Kiick, David Kiick, Jennifer Mackrell and Kaye McLeod; and 12 great-grandchildren.

Pallbearers will be deacons of Hebron Baptist Church. Honorary pallbearers will be members of the Senior Men’s Sunday School Class.

Memorials may be made to the Hebron Baptist Church Building Fund.

Memory Chapel Funeral Home in Laurel is in charge of arrangements.

Rena I. Mizell

Rena I. Mizell, 20, of Ellisville, died Wednesday, Aug. 9, 2006, at South Central Regional Medical Center in Laurel.

Graveside services will be held at 10 a.m. today, at Ellisville Cemetery. The Rev. Jeff Shannon will officiate.

Carmen Collins Cheeks

Carmen Collins Cheeks, 90, of Laurel, died Saturday, Aug. 26, 2006, at South Central Regional Medical Center in Laurel.

Funeral services will be held at 10 a.m. Tuesday, at Ellisville First United Methodist Church, with burial in Mt. Zion Cemetery. The Rev. Jeff Shannon will officiate.

A homemaker, she was a member of Ellisville First United Methodist Church.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Jimmie Cheeks; a daughter, Shelby Weeks; parents, Andrew and Arizona Collins; a sister, Euree Bush; and three brothers, Darrow Collins, Floyd Collins and George Collins.

She is survived by two daughters and sons-in-law, JoAnn and Frank McKenzie of Laurel and Diann and Larry M. Walters of Ellisville; a brother, Mack Collins of Atlanta, Texas; a sister, Ida Everett of Ellisville; grandchildren, Tony Weeks of Pass Christian, Tambra and Hank Carter of Mobile, Ala., Elizabeth and Brad Rackley of Pontotoc, Jonathan and Cindy McKenzie of Laurel and Sarah Jo and Jason Giron of Colorado Springs, Colo.; and five great-grandchildren, Josh Carter, Jake Carter, Ben McKenzie, Mollie Rackley and Tucker Giron.

Pallbearers will be Clarence Putnam, Don Winship, Scott Flynt, Ronnie Christian, Webb Lyon and James Holifield. Honorary pallbearers will be Bobby Smith, Brent Shows, Paul Johnson and Jerry Lyon.

Visitation will be held from 5-7 p.m. today, at Jones Funeral Home in Ellisville, which is in charge of arrangements.

Willie Mae Strickland

Willie Mae “Sue” Strickland, 80, of Ringgold, La., formerly of Laurel, died Friday, Aug. 25, 2006, at her residence.

Graveside services will be held at 2 p.m. today, at Memorial Gardens Cemetery. The Rev. Mike Thompson will officiate.

A retired insurance agent with Walters Insurance, she was a member of Spring Hill Baptist Church in Ringgold and a former member of Eastview Baptist Church in Jones County. She enjoyed gardening, cooking for her family and caring for animals.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Earl Strickland, in 1987; two brothers, Roscoe Coleman and Noah Coleman; parents, Willie R. and Lenora Coleman; and stepmother, Velma Dollar Coleman.

She is survived by a son and daughter-in-law, Larry and Cece Strickland of Panama City, Fla.; two daughters and sons-in-law, Cindy and Don Holley of Gulfport and Dinah and Ned Walker of Ringgold; six grandchildren, Richard Strickland and his wife Sabrina Strickland of Pickens, S.C., Dan Holly and his wife Sarah Holley of Charleston, S.C., Amy Weaver and her husband Rick Weaver of Gulfport, Heather Hooker and her husband Kevin Hooker of Ringgold, Wesley Walker of Ringgold and Ashley Burns and her husband Robert Burns of Ringgold; seven great-grandchildren; a sister, Rena Martin of Bossier City, La.; and a host of nieces, nephews, friends and other family members.

Curtis William Lindsey

Curtis William Lindsey, 48, of Heidelberg, died Wednesday, Aug. 23, 2006, at South Central Regional Medical Center in Laurel.

Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. today, at Union Baptist Church in Heidelberg, with burial in Union Cemetery in Heidelberg. The Rev. Willis Hales will officiate.

He was a plant worker at Lazy Boy in Newton.

He was preceded in death by his father, Caleb Lindsey.

He is survived by his wife, Vanessa Horne Lindsey of Heidelberg; mother, Laura McCurdy of Heidelberg; a son, Marcus Lindsey of Heidelberg; three daughters, Nicole King of Hattiesburg, Shemika Nixon of Chicago, Ill., and Unicice Cooper of Heidelberg; two brothers, Steven Lindsey of Louin and William Lindsey of Oakland, Calif.; a sister, Veronica Lindsey of Oakland, Calif.; and a grandchild.

Caroline James Arrington

Caroline James Arrington, 94, of Laurel, died Friday, Aug. 25, 2006, at Care Center in Laurel.

Funeral services will be held at 1 p.m. Thursday, at Brown Mortuary Inc. in Laurel, with burial in Nora Davis Cemetery. The Rev. Hubbard Arrington will officiate.

She was preceded in death by her parents, Emma and Columbus James; two sisters, Hester George and Lonnie Mae Crimston; and two brothers, Columbus James Jr. and Arthur James.

She is survived by a sister, Willie Mae Carter of Laurel, and numerous nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.

Visitation will be held from 6-8 p.m. today, at Brown Mortuary Inc. in Laurel, which is in charge of arrangements.

Brandalon Elaine Graham

Brandalon Elaine Graham, 25, of Ovett, died Sunday, Aug. 27, 2006, in Laurel.

Funeral services will be held at 10 a.m. Thursday, at Memory Chapel Funeral Home in Laurel, with burial in Hickory Grove Cemetery in Laurel. The Rev. Charles Hatchey will officiate.

She was employed at Shoney’s.

She was preceded in death by her grandfather, Arthur Burroughs.

She is survived by her father and stepmother, David and Kim Wansley of Petal; mother and stepfather, Rachael E. Burroughs Byrd and Allen Byrd of San Antonio, Texas; husband, Jerry Graham of Ovett; a daughter, Destiny Rose Graham of Ovett; grandmother, Daisey Burroughs of Laurel; maternal grandparents, Lester and Carolyn Wansley of Laurel; a sister, Ericka Byrd of Alabama; and a host of aunts, uncles and other family members.

Visitation will be held from 5-8 p.m. today, at Memory Chapel Funeral Home in Laurel, which is in charge of arrangements.

Fearless Barnes

Fearless “BB” Barnes, 88, of Taylorsville, died Wednesday, Sept. 27, 2006, at Wesley Medical Center in Hattiesburg.

Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Monday, at Oak Grove Missionary Baptist Church in Hebron, with burial in the church cemetery. The Rev. George Barnes will officiate.

He was a farmer and a member of Oak Grove Missionary Baptist Church.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Oscar and Caroline Barnes, and wife, Bernice Musgrove Barnes.

He is survived by two sons and a daughter-in-law, George and Marnessie Barnes of Laurel and Larry Barnes of Moss; seven daughters and two sons-in-law, Flo and Jerome Wyatt and Johnnie Mae Barnes, all of Laurel, Bettey Crook of Riverside, Calif., Carolyn and Jack Jones of Heidelberg and Alice Barnes Hicks, Sharon Graves and Lakeanna Barnes, all of Taylorsville; a sister, Retha Barnes of Collins; 30 grandchildren; numerous great-grandchildren; and 15 great-great-grandchildren.

Visitation will be held from 7-9 p.m. today, at Oak Grove Missionary Baptist Church.

Chapel of Angels Funeral Home in Laurel is in charge of arrangements.

Ruby Lynn Lewis

Ruby Lynn Lewis, 70, of Collins, died Wednesday, Sept. 27, 2006, in Whitesburg, Ga.

Funeral’ services will be held at 2 p.m. today, at Wade-Nowell Funeral Home in Collins, with burial in Station Creek Baptist Church Cemetery. The Rev. Douglas Barber will officiate.

She was a homemaker and a member of Station Creek Baptist Church.

She was preceded in death by her parents, Nolan and Merlene Wade Abercrombie, and a brother, Rayburn Abercrombie.

James William Rowell

James William Rowell, 40, of Ovett, died Saturday, Sept. 30, 2006, at Forrest General Hospital in Hattiesburg.

Funeral services will be held at 10:30 a.m. Tuesday, at Jones and Son Funeral Home in Richton, with burial in Welcome Home Cemetery. Colon Rowell will officiate.

He is survived by his wife, Patricia Thompson Rowell of Ovett; parents, Roy and Yvonne Rowell of Ovett; two sons, Timothy William Rowell and Justin William Rowell, both of Ovett; a daughter, Casity Susan Rowell of Ovett; three brothers and two sisters-in-law, Alan and Peggy Rowell, Lee Rowell and Clint and Kamelia Rowell, all of Ovett; and eight nieces and nephews.

Visitation will be held from 4:30-10 p.m. today, at Jones and Son Funeral Home in Richton, which is in charge of arrangements.
