Thomas Noel Miller

Sallis native Thomas Noel Miller, 67, died Dec. 2. 2002 after a two year illness. There will be a memorial service Saturday at 11 a.m. at the Sallis Baptist Church with a reception to be held afterwards at the church. Friends and relatives are invited.
He donated his body to the University Medical Center for cancer research.

He attended Sallis High School. He was the son of the late Annie Jenkins Miller and Henry Felix Miller. He was the sixth of nine children, preceded in death by the youngest child, Kenneth Wayne, who died at the age of 9.

He is survived by the following siblings: Dosia Godbold of Union Church, John Miller of Greenwood, Ann McDonald of Indianola, David Miller of Greenwood, Mary Elizabeth Smith of Alexandria, Va., Joseph Miller of Washington D.C., and Martha Frances Phillips of Greenwood.

He is also survived by aunts, Minnie McClellan of Lexington, Mary Weir of Grenada and Monnie Jenkins of Sallis, many nieces and nephews.

After high school, Miller went into the Army where he served in Germany, then in Vietnam in the early years of the Vietnam War. Altogether he served for four years.

After the Army he was employed by Ivey Electrical Contracting Company in Kosciusko for approximately 10 years, as a project supervisor. His work took him to Oklahoma, Arizona, Kansas and various other states. His last employment was with the Osmose Corp. of Buffalo, N.Y., where he worked as a field supervisor, in various locations including Wyoming, New Mexico, Colorado, South Dakota and in Mississippi, until his health deteriorated to the point he could no longer work full time.

Bessie Lee McDonald

Services for Mrs. Bessie Lee McDonald, 85, were held Saturday at 2 p.m. at the Church of Christ with burial in Parkway Cemetery.
Mrs. McDonald, a native of Attala County, died at a nursing center in Leflore County following an illness of several months. She was a member of the Church of Christ.

She is survived by three daughters, Lena C. Edwards of Milwaukee, Linda Burnside of Carthage, and Jackie McDonald of Hernando; three sons, Freddie and Eddie McDonald of Kosciusko, Leroy McDonald of Milwaukee; a sister, Allie Mae McCoy of Detroit; a brother, Governor Tipton of Gary, Ind.; 14 grandchildren and 12 great-grandchildren.

Minister Eric Dawkins officiated.

Pallbearers were Leroy McDonald, Mark Burnside, Eddie McDonald and Michael Burnside.

Winters Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements.

James Allen Prewitt

James A. Prewitt, 86, died Dec. 5, 2002 at his home in Crystal Springs. Services were held Saturday at 1 p.m. at the First Baptist Church in Crystal Springs with burial in the Crystal Springs City Cemetery.
Prewitt was the son of the late Charles Feemster Prewitt and Lillie Bea Black Prewitt, and was reared in the Bear Creek Community of Attala County.

He graduated from Weir High School in 1934 and attended Holmes Junior College. He was a veteran of World War II and was a recipient of the Purple Heart for wounds received as his unit was preparing to cross the Rhine River. He also saw action on the Anizo Beachhead.

He had lived in Crystal Springs for 57 years where he operated a Western Auto Store. He was an active member of the First Baptist Church of Crystal Springs where he had served in many capacities.

He is survived by his wife Thelma; two daughters, Ouida Gementz of Spring, Texas, and Brenda Toups of Alexandria, La.; two sisters, Bettie Prewitt Burchfield of Kosciusko and Ouida Prewitt Fancher of Hazlehurst; two grandchildren, Thad and Brittany Toups.

Stringer Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements.

James H. Reed

Graveside services for James H. "Jim" Reed, 72, of Ethel were held Tuesday at 11 a.m. at County Line Cemetery in Leake County.
Reed, a retired welder, died Dec. 7, 2002 at Montfort Jones Memorial Hospital. He was a member of Pilgrims Rest Baptist Church and the Ethel Masonic Lodge.

He is survived by a daughter, Kathy Burt of Richmond, Va.; a son, Wayne Reed of Kosciusko; three sisters, Louise Frost of Flora, Ida B. Henry of Jackson and Ruby Jennings of Clinton; two brothers, Bryant N. Reed of Carmack and George T. Reed of Richand; four grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.

Rev. Chester Carlisle officiated.

Pallbearers were Jeff Reed, Jamie Hodges, Bubba Hodges, Tony Crosby, Otha Frost and Tony Frost.

Memorials may be made to Pilgrims Rest Baptist Church.

Jordan Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements.

Viola Rimmer

Services for Mrs. Viola Rimmer, 89, of Sallis were held Sunday at 1 p.m. at Pleasant Grove No. 2 M.B. Church.
Burial was in Roby Cemetery at Sallis with Winters Funeral Home handling arrangements.

Mrs. Rimmer, a native of Attala County, died Nov. 30, 2002 at her residence. She was a member of Pleasant Grove No. 2 M.B. Church, Mother Board, usher, deaconess and Sunday school teacher.

She is survived by three daughters, Catherine Brown, Bettie Noetner and Sherrell Morton; five sons, Tom Brown, Roy Brown, Robert Rimmer, Willie Rimmer and Charles Rimmer; sisters, Brisee Davis, Minnie Cotton, Linnie Haynes, Mary Alice, Joanna, Claradelle and O.D.; two brothers, Harvey and Charlie B. Carr; 26 grandchildren, 29 great-grandchildren.

Rev. Larry T. Daniels officiated.

Grandsons served as pallbearers.

Margaret Walker Smith

Funeral services for Mrs. Margaret Walker Smith, 88, of Belleville, Ill., were held Saturday at 11 a.m. at Wesley United Methodist Church.
Burial was in the Kosciusko City Cemetery with Winters Funeral Home in charge.

Mrs. Smith, a retired health worker, died Nov. 30, 2002 at Memorial Hospital in Belleville.

She is survived by five grandchildren, 11 great-grandchildren and four great-great-grandchildren.

Rev. Willie Young officiated.

Lucille Barrett

Funeral services for Mrs. Lucille Barrett, 89, of Kosciusko were held Tuesday at 2 p.m. at Culpepper Funeral Home Chapel with burial in Good Hope Cemetery.
Mrs. Barrett, a native of Attala County, died Feb. 2, 2003 at her residence. She was a member of Eastern Star and Ladies Auxiliary of Stonestreet-Rone VFW Post 1983. She was a member of Good Hope Baptist Church at Camden and attended Hurricane Baptist Church.

She was the widow of Henry Loyd Barrett.

She is survived by four sons, William "Bill" Barrett, John Barrett, Bert Barrett of Kosciusko, Richard Barrett of Beaumont, Texas; two daughters, Velma Ann Kernop of Camden and Sally Mae Summers of Kosciusko; five brothers, James Edward Burrell of McAdams, James Willis Burrell of Goodman, Arthur Ellis Burrell of Walnut Grove, Clyde William Burrell of Slidell, La., and James Leon Burrell of Broken Bow, Okla.; six sisters, Stella McNeil, Wilma Irene Van Winkle of Kosciusko, Ollie Mae Yarborough of Waveland, Elsie Marie Jones of Houston, Texas, Eudora Elizabeth Deangelo of Hattiesburg, Nancy Katherine Burr of Pass Christian; 14 grandchildren and 21 great-grandchildren.

Rev. Freddie Tanksley officiated.

Olive 'Hickory' Clippinger

Funeral services for Mrs. Olive "Hickory" Clippinger, 88, of Kosciusko were held Monday at 2 p.m. at Jordan Funeral Home Chapel with burial in Parkway Cemetery.
Mrs. Clippinger died Feb. 1, 2003 at Montfort Jones Memorial Hospital. She was a member of the First United Methodist Church.

She is survived by two daughters, Kay C. Graves of Madison and Sandra Harvey of Tallahassee, Fla.; a son, Dr. David Clippinger of Gulfport; seven grandchildren and eight great-grandchildren.

Rev. James Saulter officiated.

Serving as pallbearers were Nicholas Thompson, Jeremy Thompson, Steve Harvey, Kenny Stephens, Bruce Oberlies and Michael Barnett.

Memorials may be made to the First United Methodist Church.

Sam H. Collier

Funeral services for Sam H. Collier, 73, of Ackerman were held Friday at 10 a.m. at Wake Forest Baptist Church in Sturgis.
Burial was in the Wake Forest Baptist Cemetery with Nowell Funeral Home in charge of arrangements.

Collier, a retired painter and carpenter, died Jan. 28, 2003 at the North Mississippi Medical Center in Tupelo. He was a native of Choctaw County and a member of Wake Forest Baptist Church.

He is survived by two sons, Cress Collier and Henry Collier of Ackerman; two brothers, James K. Collier and John D. Collier of Ackerman; a sister, Ruby Butler of Maben; 10 grandchildren; a stepson, Scott Wise of Starkville; two stepdaughters, Dawn Fulce of Purvis and Amelia Moore of Starkville.

Memorials may be made to Wake Forest Baptist Church in Sturgis.
