Larry Mitchell Sharpe

Services for Larry Mitchell Sharpe, 25, of Kosciusko were held Jan. 11, 2005 at Winters Funeral Home Chapel with burial in Parkway Cemetery.

Sharpe, a student and factory worker, died Jan. 5, 2005 at his residence. He was a member of Agape Worship Center.

He is survived by his father, Larry M. Harmon of Odessa, Texas; his mother, Catherine Sharpe of Kosciusko; two sisters, Shauntee Mosley of South Korea and Tonya Hill of St. Petersburg, Fla.

Rev. Charles Smith officiated.

Pallbearers were Cornell Richmond, Raymond Fondren, Phillip Coffee, Emit Dodd, James Skinner, Greg Lipsey and Detrick Harmon.

May Bell Mitchell

Funeral services for Mrs. May Bell Mitchell, 87, of Lansing, Mich., were held Jan. 18, at the Estes-Leadley Greater Lansing Chapel with burial in Deepdale Memorial Gardens.

Mrs. Mitchell, a native of Ethel was the daughter of the late Herbert T. and Rhoda May Burns. She died Jan. 13, 2005 at Ingham Regional Medical Center. She was a member of Portland Chapter No. 258 OES, a life member of Auxiliary Post 701, VFW, and a member of MOCA No. 5.

She was preceded in death by her husband Victor A. Mitchel Sr. to whom she was married two months short of 69 years; her parents; son, victor A. Mitchell, Jr.; five brothers and one granddaughter.

She is survived by three daughters, Margie Gladding, Dorris Click and Norene White; nine grandchildren, 18 great-grandchildren and three great-great-grandchildren, all of the Lansing area; a brother, Thornton Burns; sisters Carnell Rodgers, Effie Jones and India Sanders of Kosciusko; numerous nieces and nephews.

Clarence Benton Minyard

Services for Clarence Benton Minyard, 92, of Lexington were held Saturday at 11 a.m. at the First United Methodist Church in Lexington. Burial was in Odd Fellows Cemetery. He died Jan. 27, 2005 at the Mississippi Baptist Medical Center in Jackson.

Vickie Renay Murren

Services for Vickie Renay Murren, 54, of Durant were held Monday at 10 a.m. at Southern Funeral Home Chapel with burial in Mizpah Cemetery. She died Jan. 28, 2005 at Hospice in His Hands in Durant.

Louis Edwin Gant Jr.

Louis Edwin “Eddie” Gant, 58, of Kosciusko, a retired surveyor, died Dec. 30, 2007 at University Hospital in Lexington.

Graveside services were held Jan. 2 at 10 a.m. at Parkway Cemetery with Rev. Barry Corbett officiating.

He is survived by a daughter, Mellissa Ann Gant of Jackson; a son, Steven Gant of Kosciusko; sisters,. Linda Jones of Goodman, Lou Horne of Jackson, and Vicki Noah of McCarley; a brother, Robbie Gant of Jackson; three grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Louis Edwin Gant Sr. and Dorothy Jean Montgomery Lott.

Pallbearers were Brad Noah, Clint Yates, Richard Jones, Drennon Horne, Brett Dyess, and Trevor Gant.

Jordan Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements.

Royce David Goza

Funeral services for Royce David Goza, 65, of Mabank, Texas, will be held Saturday at 2 p.m. at Culpepper Funeral Home Chapel with burial in Smyrna Cemetery. Visitation will be held from noon until service time.

Goza, an emergency room nurse in Gun Barrel City, TX, died Jan. 1, 2008 at the VA Hospital in Dallas. He was a veteran and served in the Vietnam War.

He is survived by his wife, Lynn P. Goza of Mabank; daughters, Gloria Sides of Kosciusko and Angie Summers of Arlington, Texas; a sister, Martha Everett of Houston, Texas; grandchildren, Scott and Dana Sides, Shea and Stephen Rea.

Rev. James Culpepper will officiate

Romello Dewon Winters

Services for Romello Dewon Winters, 4, will be held Sunday at 3 p.m. at Traveler’s Rest M.B . Church with burial in Parkway Cemetery.

He died Jan. 1, 2008 in Memphis as a result of smoke inhalation.

Winters Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

Zona Ashworth Peeler

Zona Ashworth Peeler, 74, of Jackson died Jan. 5, 2008 at Manhatten Heal Care.

Funeral services will be held Wednesday, Jan. 9, at 1 p.m. from the Chapel of Galloway Memorial United Methodist Church. Visitation will be from 5-7 p.m. Tuesday from the High Street Chapel of Wright and Ferguson Funeral Home and after 12 noon Wednesday in the Galloway Chapel.

Interment will follow the service at 3:30 p.m. Wednesday in the City Cemetery in Kosciusko.

Born in Jackson Aug. 26, 1933, Zona was raised in Kosciusko. She had lived in Jackson for many years. She was a homemaker and was a member of Broadmoor Baptist Church. She was preceded in death by her parents H. Elmo Peeler Sr., Josephine Ashworth Peeler and her son Karl Jefferson Jones.

Survivors include her daughters, Priscilla Russell and Zona (Jo) Price, both of Jackson; one grandson, Samuel Jefferson Hebbard of Jackson; her sister Lady Peeler Dodge of Jackson and her brother Elmo Peeler Jr. of Los Angeles, Calif.

Memorials may be made to French Camp Academy, French Camp, Ms. 39745.

Mary Lou Doude Caldwell

Graveside services for Mary Lou Doude Caldwell of Kosciusko, formerly of Winona, will be held at 3 p.m. on Friday, January 11, 2008, at Vaiden Cemetery in Vaiden, with Rev. Mary Berry officiating. Oliver Funeral Home of Winona is handling arrangements.

Mrs. Caldwell died from complications of Parkinson's Disease on Sunday, January 6, at Golden Age Nursing Home in Greenwood. She was 84.

Mrs. Caldwell was the daughter of the late Neely Watkins Doude and Sally Lydia Thornton Doude, and the widow of Harvey B. Caldwell, Jr. She was the retired executive secretary for Central Mississippi, Inc., in Winona, a member of St. Matthew's Episcopal Church in Kosciusko, and a member of the American Legion Auxiliary.

In addition to her parents and husband, Mrs. Caldwell was preceded in death by her son, Neely D. Caldwell. She is survived by two sons, Harvey B. Caldwell III of Carrollton and David K. Caldwell of Pearl; six grandchildren, Beth Capezio, Julie Caldwell, and Rusty Caldwell, all of New Jersey, Neely D. Caldwell, Jr., of Louisiana, Kim Rowe of West Virginia, and David K. Caldwell, Jr., of Mississippi; and ten great-grandchildren.

The family would like to offer special thanks to the Orange Wing of Golden Age Nursing Home in Greenwood for the special care given to their mother.

Linda M. Parker Fox

Services for Mrs. Linda M. Parker Fox, 66, of Sallis were held Monday at 10 a.m. at Southern Funeral Home Chapel in Durant with burial in Mizpah Cemetery.

Mrs. Fox died Jan. 4, 2008 at Montfort Jones Memorial Hospital.

Edward Roundtree Sr.

Funeral services for Edward Roundtree Sr., 83, of Kosciusko will be held Wednesday at noon at Palestine M.B. Church with burial in Bullock Cemetery.

Roundtree, a retired carpenter, died Jan. 11, 2008 at Montfort Jones Memorial Hospital.

Winters Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

Bessie Word Smith

Bessie Word Smith, 100, a retired teacher, died of heart failure, Jan. 15, 2008 at the Atwood Personal Care Home in Kosciusko.

Visitation is Thursday, 12:30 p.m. until service time at Jordan Funeral Home in Kosciusko.

Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Thursday at Jordan Funeral Home Chapel with burial in Parkway Cemetery. Rev. Barry Corbett will officiate.

Mrs. Smith was preceded in death by her husband of 50 years, J. Herman smith. She had lived in Kosciusko since her marriage in 1933.

For many years, she taught the first grade at Kosciusko Elementary School. She was a member of the First Baptist Church where she had taught Sunday school in the junior department. During the years, Mrs. Smith had been an active member of the Book Lovers Club, the New Century Club and was a charter member of the Little Garden Club.

She was preceded in death by her sister, Eva Mae Word, and brother, Roy Word of Vaiden. She is survived by one daughter, Bettye Smith Pierce and husband, Jim Pierce of Madison; two granddaughters, Cindy (Mark) Jordan of Madison and Sheri (David) Bryan of Ridgeland; and seven great-grandchildren. She is also survived by two sisters-in-law of Kosciusko, Doris Smith Puryear and Narnee Smith Williams.

Pallbearers are her grandson and great-grandsons, Mark Jordan, JonMark Jordan, Pierce Jordan, Tommy Woodard, David Woodard, and friend, Mark Atwood.

Honorary pallbearers are her nephews, Dr. Jim Puryear of Augusta, Ga., and Harry Puryear of Birmingham, Ala., along with Eddie Woodard of Madison.

Memorials may be given to Kosciusko First Baptist Church, P.O. Box 70, Kosciusko, Ms. 39090, or your favorite charity.

Judy B. Sims

Judy B. Sims, 74, a lifelong resident of Kosciusko died Jan. 16, 2008 at Montfort Jones Memorial Hospital. Funeral services will be held Friday, Jan. 18, at 11 a.m. at Williamsville Baptist Church where she was a member for over 60 years.

Rev. Junior Davis, Rev. Doug Hubbard and other former pastors will officiate. Burial will be in Parkway Cemetery.

Jordan Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

Ms. Sims was an organist and pianist for the church for many years and loved serving the Lord through her music ministry, which included playing for an untold number of weddings and funerals.

She also served as substitute secretary for the church and was a member of the Faith Sunday School class.

Early in her career, Judy was employed with the Attala County Tax Assessor’s office, and was a longtime bank teller for the former Attala Bank, then Deposit Guaranty National Bank and now Citizens National Bank.

She enjoyed life, loved people, and everyone she met loved her.

She is survived by sons, Tommy Sims and his wife Kelly of Franklin, Tenn., and Donny Sims and his wife, Ceressa of Kosciusko; five grandchildren, Ashlee Sims, Andrea Sims, Jason Sims, Jordan Sims and Austin Ellis; one sister, Wanna G. Johnson of Kosciusko; and her best friend, Helen Horne, of Kosciusko.

She is preceded in death by her parents Clifton F. Barrett and Maggie Jewel Kennedy Barrett.

Active pallbearers will be Jason Sims, Jordan Sims, Austin Ellis, Jimmy Ray Johnson, Ronnie Sims, Tim Horne, Kenny Horne, and Jeff Horne.

Honorary pallbearers will be deacons of Williamsville Baptist Church and the Faith Sunday School class.

Memorials may be made to St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital or Williamsville Baptist Church.
