Lillie Mae Gower

Funeral services for Mrs. Lillie Mae Gower, 96, of Kosciusko will be held Sunday at 2 p.m. at Pleasant Grove M.B. Church No. 1.

She died Sept. 30, 2008 at Montfort Jones Memorial Hospital.

Winters Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

Larry Allen Biggart

Larry “Heavy” Allen Biggart, 55, of Thomastown died Sept. 28, 2008 at his home. He was a truck driver.

A memorial service was held Oct. 2, 2008 at Thomastown Baptist Church with burial in Thomastown Cemetery. Rev. Albert Clark and Rev. Brian Hall officiated.

He was a member of Thomastown Baptist Church.

He was preceded in death by his father, Jess Alex Biggart; sister, Nell Williamson; brothers, Jessie J. Biggart and Jeff Biggart.

Survivors are his mother, Lillian Mae Vail Biggart; sisters, Shirley Parrish of Greenwood, Pat Foster of and Barbara Ware, both of Thomastown; brothers, Woodrow Houge of Greenville, O’Neal Biggart , Danny Biggart, Gary Biggart, Jessie Biggart, all of Thomastown, and Daryl Biggart of Morton; 23 nieces and nephews, 32 great-nieces and nephews; friends, Linda Miller and family, Heather Milton and children, and Tammy Gilmer.

Jordan Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements.

Memorials may be sent to Thomastown Baptist Church or the American Diabetes Foundation.

Dr. John M. Alford Jr.

Dr. John Marvin Alford Jr., 87, died Oct. 2, 2008 at the Mississippi State Veterans Home in Kosciusko after an extended illness.

He was born July 1, 1921 in Drewry, Ala., son of the late John Marvin Alford Sr. and Josie Lauritzen Alford. He graduated from LSU School of Medicine.

Dr. Alford was a U.S. Navy veteran where he served as a surgeon. Upon discharge he operated an active general medical practice in Greenwood for nearly 50 years. He served on the Board of Trustees of the Mississippi State Medical Association from 1967-70 after serving on a variety of other committees within the association, including the Commission on Medicine and Religion.

Upon retirement Dr. Alford maintained a keen interest in psychology and was a scholar of Carl Jung. His hobbies included writing, bailing hay, cattle farming, and sailing in the Gulf Coast waters where he lived many years after retirement. In 1961 he launched his own handcrafted 32 foot sailboat off the banks of the Yazoo River in Greenwood. He and his family navigated it down the Mississippi River where it was moored at the Ocean Springs harbor for many years. During his years living on the Gulf Cost he volunteered his services with the Home of Grace facility for drug and alcohol abuse for men, in Van Cleave, Ms. Upon moving to Tupelo he became a member of Wesley United Methodist Church.

Services will be held Sunday, Oct. 5, at the Tupelo Chapel of Holland-Harris Funeral Directors with Rev. Raymond Rooney officiating. Burial will follow in Lindsey Cemetery in Tishomingo County.

Services include his wife of 26 years, Wentris Oswalt Alford; three sons, Dr. John M. Alford III (Angie) of Dubling, Ga., Dr. Peter Alford (Tracy) of Huntersville, N.C., Dr. Tim Alford (Mary) of Kosciusko; daughter, Helen Alford Redding (Robert) of Jackson, Tn.; two step children, Pamela Loveless Rose (Phil) of Memphis, Alan Loveless (Kelly) of Madison; 12 grandchildren; three great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his parents; the mother of his children, Virginia Alford;’ brother, Lauritzen Alford; sister, Beryl Longman.

Visitation will be 12-2 p.m. Sunday at the funeral home.

In lieu of flowers the family asks donations be made to the Alzheimers Association, 1900 Dunbarton Drive, Suite 1, Jackson, Ms. 39216 or The American Heart Association, P.O. Box 16808, Jackson, Ms. 39236.

Carlton E. Moorhead

Carlton E. Moorhead, 95, of Ethel, a retired sheet metal worker with Sheller Globe Corporation, died Monday, Oct. 6, 2008, at Neshoba County General Hospital.

Visitation is today from 5-8 p.m. at Jordan Funeral Home in Kosciusko. Funeral services are Wednesday, Oct. 7, with burial in the Carson Ridge Cemetery.

Jordan Funeral Home is handling the arrangements.

He was a member of Ethel Baptist Church and was a former deacon.

Survivors include: son, Wayne Moorhead and wife, Lou of Denham Springs, La.; daughter, Janie Curtis and husband, David of Philadelphia; grandchildren, Sonny Moorhead, Susanne Tregre and husband, Matt, and Vicki Curtis; great-grandchildren Grayson, McKenna and Ellerie Tregre.

Memorials may be sent to Ethel Baptist Church or the Carson Ridge Cemetery Fund.

Ellen M. Scarborough

Ellen Mizell Scarborough, 91, died Oct. 13, 2007 at Huron, the home of her daughter Mary Ellen Chamberlin, where she resided for the past two years. Funeral services were held Tuesday at 10 a.m. at First Baptist Church in Kosciusko with burial at 3 p.m. in Kingdom Cemetery, Yocona Community, Oxford. Jordan Funeral Home is handling the Magnolia arrangements.

Mrs. Scarborough was born Jan. 5, 1916, in Vamville, S.C. She was the daughter of Robert Jackson Mizell and Susan Irene Mixson. She was educated in the public schools of Beaufort, S.C., and Savannah, Ga. Because of the depression, upon high school graduation she entered the work force foregoing a college education. This did not deter her from the pursuit of excellence in the development of her many talents.

A talented artist in the use of many mediums, especially pastels and oils, her work is on permanent display at Central Hills Baptist Retreat. She delighted in hand work especially with gifts for her family. She was a gifted singer serving as contralto soloist in oratorios directed by Dupre Rhame of Furman University and Warren Angell of Oklahoma Baptist University. She was still a church soloist in her 80s.

She married Rev. Benjamin Scarborough Sr. of Savannah, and together they served in churches in Georgia at Savannah, Jessup, Rockmart, Summerville, and in Adairsville. Mississippi churches at Waynesboro, Kosciusko, Bruce, and New Prospect, Oxford were served all Southern Baptist.

Many honors were bestowed on the Scarboroughs including the Award of Merit from the DAR of Georgia for their work with youth and through the Federated Women’s Clubs of Mississippi, the family was chosen as Family of The Year for all of their accomplishments while living in Kosciusko.

Mrs. Scarborough taught the special education class at Westside Elementary. In Oxford she and her husband served as advisors to the BSU at Ole Miss and loved having international students in their home and teaching them conversational English. Her affiliations included the Samuel Hammond DAR, a charter member of the Cameo Society of Mississippi, and a volunteer at the Natchez Trace Visitor Center.

Her greatest joy was serving her Lord. She was always a Sunday School teacher and attended sessions at Ridgecrest, Glorieta, and the Southern Baptist Convention as long as she was physically able. Her life was always one of concern and love for others.

In her responses in the book, “Grandmother Remembers” she wrote of her wish for the future “that Peace may come to all the world and that Jesus might be known and loved by everyone. May we all stay well and healthy and our needs be met. That my grandchildren will grow up to serve the Lord as I have tried to do all my life. Be the best person you can be. Trust the Lord with all your heart for he said, ‘I will never leave nor forsake you’.”

Her daughter writes that “Miss Ellen,” as she loved to be called, was a wonderful example of the Christian life in action. We will dearly miss our “Miss Ellen.” At the time of her death she was a member of the First Baptist Church, McComb.

Survivors include two sons, Benjamin Cuttino Scarborough Jr. and his wife, Irene of Rockwall, Texas, and James Jackson Scarborough of Huron, Magnolia; one daughter, Mary Ellen Chamberlin of Huron, Magnolia; two sisters, Claire Baker and husband, Bob of Jonesboro, Ga., and Betty Onken of Astor, Fla.; sister-in-law, Barbara Mizell of Rockville, Md.; 10 grandchildren, Mike Scarborough and wife, Cyndi of Charlotte, N.C., Rob Scarborough and wife, Kelly of St. Charles, Mo., Susan Ladd and husband, Mark of Celina, Texas; Jim Scarborough and wife, Pearl of Pottsboro, Texas, Mary Phillips and husband, Marty of Brandon, Lisa Roberts of Puckett, John Scarborough and wife, Amanda of Durant, Okla., Marty Chamberlin and wife, Jacqualynne of Kenner, La;., Heather King and husband, Keith of Mobile, Ala., and Clay Chamberlin of Huron, Magnolia; 14 great-grandchildren.

Pallbearers were Mike, Rob, Jim and John Scarborough, Marty and Clay Chamberlin, Keith King, and Marty Phillips.

Officiating ministers were Dr. Kermit McGregor, Rev. Edwin Sudduth and Rev. Barry Corbett.

She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband; a sister, Mary Myrtle Burns; two brothers, Floyd Jackson Mizell and Robert Harley Mizell; a great-grandchild, Blake Scarborough, and a son-in-law, Leonard M. Chamberlin Jr.

McComb arrangements were by Jones Family Funeral Services, Kosciusko arrangements by Jordan Funeral Home, and Oxford arrangements by Waller Funeral Home.

Memorials may be sent to Community Hospice of America or to the Christian Missions Fund or the donation of your choice.

Fred Gibbs Berry Sr.

Services for Fred Gibbs Berry Sr., 81, of Lexington were held Sunday at 2 p.m. at Ebenezer Baptist Church with burial in Ebenezer Cemetery.

Berry died Oct. 11, 2007 at his residence.

Southern Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements.

Evelyn Hanson

Funeral services for Mrs. Evelyn Hanson, 90, of Kosciusko will be held Friday at 11 a.m. at Culpepper Funeral Home Chapel with burial in Parkway Cemetery.

Mrs. Hanson, a native of Kosciusko, died Oct. 17, 2007 at the Attala County Nursing Center. She was a member of New Home Primitive Baptist Church.

She is survived by three sons, John Ed Hanson of Atlanta, Joe Hanson of Kosciusko, Aaron Hanson of Carthage; a daughter, Margie Kaldon of Brandon; a brother, Aubrey Rawson of Kosciusko; two sisters, Nina Fay Lavender and Grace Burkett of Carthage; six grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.

Officiating will be Rev. Leroy Mosley, Rev. Barry Corbett and Rev. Mark Parnell.

Serving as pallbearers will be Danny Gray, Todd Burrell, George Bounds, Stephen Hanson, David Rawson, Doug Rawson, bobby Rawson and Jackie Burkett.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Pender Hanson, and sisters, Hilda Allen and Ruth Poole.

Katie Ruth Fisher Lee

Mrs. Katie Ruth Fisher Lee, 75, of Forest died Monday, October 15, 2007, at Hospice In His Hands in Madden. Funeral services were held at 10 a.m. Wednesday, October 17, 2007, at Ott & Lee Funeral Home Chapel in Forest with burial in Hillsboro Baptist Church Cemetery. Rev. Bobby Warren and Rev. Richard Forsythe officiated.

Mrs. Lee was a native of Vaiden, and had been a resident of Forest for the past 12 years prior to having lived in Koscuisko. She was a member of Calvary Baptist Church. Mrs. Lee was preceded in death by two husbands, Bennie O. Duncan and Johnnie Lee; her son, Bennie Lee Duncan; granddaughter, Johnny Lynn Thomas; son-in-law, Horace Thomas; brother,Edward Lee Fisher; sisters, Hazel Sanders, Shirley Harmon, and Marie Holland; and her parents, Jessie Lee and Audie Fisher.

Survivors include two daughters, Dianne Thomas of Conehatta and Sandra Shaw and husband, Elvis of Forest; four sisters, Linda Coleman of Hazlehurst, Sarah Chipmon of Sebastopol, Peggy Monk of Walnut Grove and Kathleen Wilson of Decatur; one brother, Bobby Fisher of Hillsboro; her faithful companion and caregiver, Herman Luke of Forest; fourgrandchildren, Cody Shaw, Kelsey Shaw, Margie Hammond and Cindy Perkins; three great grandchildren, Nathan Perkins, Brittany Perkins and Wiley Hammond; numereous nieces and nephews.

Marvin Charles Nash

Graveside services for Marvin Charles Nash, 62, of Kosciusko will be held Friday at 3 p.m. at Parkway Cemetery.

Nash, a native of New Orleans, died Oct. 17, 2007 at Montfort Jones Memorial Hospital.

He was preceded in death by his parents, T.O. Armstrong and Marjorie Nash, and a brother, Glenn Armstrong.

He is survived by two sisters, Glenda Ables of Kosciusko and Shirley Hooks of Jackson; several nieces and nephews.

Culpepper Funeral Home handled arrangements.

Dr. Claude A. Jackson

Claude A. Jackson, M.C., 92, a medical doctor in Kosciusko for 51 years, died Oct. 18,2007 at Montfort Jones Memorial Hospital.

Services were held Sunday at 2 p.m. at the First Presbyterian Church with burial in Parkway Cemetery. Rev. Phillip Palmertree and Rev. John McKenzie officiated. Jordan Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements.

Dr. Jackson served his country as a Captain in World War II in the 3rd Infantry Division and was awarded the Bronze Star for bravery.

He returned to New Orleans to finish his residency in OB-GYN and in 1947 returned to his hometown of Kosciusko to begin his practice of medicine. He was an avid fly fisherman who tied his own flies. He was a champion chess player and enjoyed sharing his knowledge with young and old. Playing pool and flying were other hobbies he enjoyed.

Dr. Jackson was also a member of the Ole Miss football squad for four years and played in the 1935 Orange Bowl game. He was a member of the Mississippi Medical Association, Stonestreet-Rone VFW Post 1983 and the University of Mississippi Alumni Association. He was a member of the First Presbyterian Church in Kosciusko since childhood.

Survivors include four daughters, Margaret Aden Thornton and husband Doug of Kosciusko, Pat Owen of Vicksburg, Stirling Alyse Steen and her husband Sid of Ethel, and Myra Adrienne Wigley and husband Mac of Lexington; nine grandchildren, Margaret Claire Pound of Kosciusko, Shara Steen Roos of Ethel, Steven Jackson Thornton of Dallas, Texas, Sean Michael Owen of Starkville, Shane Christopher Steen of Kosciusko, Shannon Ray Steen of Kosciusko, Scott Patrick Owen of Vicksburg, Claude Aden Wigley of Brandon and Jennifer Clair Deston of Destin, Fla.; seven great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Ola White Jackson; parents, Myra Wilson Jackson and Lemuel Doty Jackson Sr.; a brother, Doty Jackson Jr., and twin sons, Adrian Jackson and Doty Jackson.

Pallbearers were Steven Jackson Thornton, Sean Michael Owen, Shane Christopher Steen, Shannon Ray Steen, Claude Aden Wigley and Thomas Pound.

Memorials may be sent to Kosciusko First Presbyterian Church Building Fund and French Camp Academy.

DD Ballard

DD Ballard 82, died Friday, October 19, 2007 at his residence in Clinton. Services were held at 10 a.m. Monday, October 22, in the chapel at Lakewood Funeral Home in Clinton. Burial was in Lakewood Memorial Park.

Ballard was born in the Doty Springs Community in Attala County on August 19, 1925 to the late J.C. Ballard and Ardell Cummins Ballard.

DD was in the United States Navy where he proudly served during WW II. He was a member of the Wahabi Shrine Temple Color Guard, the Clinton Shrine Club and the Pearl Masonic Lodge #23.

A longtime resident of Clinton, DD was a member of Parkway Baptist Church for 56 years. He was the owner/operator of DD Ballard Construction Company for 29 years and was the first to use two-way radios in the dirt construction industry.

Preceding him in death are his parents, brother AE Ballard and sister Lovie Mae Smith.

He is survived by his loving and devoted wife of 59 years Betty Ballard of Clinton; sons Ronnie Ballard of Clinton and Dwayne Ballard and his wife Melissa of Clinton; daughter Cindy Price of Collierville, Tenn.; grandchildren Alexandra and Heather Price of Collierville, and Ashton, Brecken and Lacey Ballard, all of Clinton; sister Kathleen Shaws of Florence and numerous nieces and nephews.

Memorials can be made to Parkway Baptist Church New Sanctuary Fund or to the charity of choice.
