Turner Broadway remembered as outdoorsman

Turner A. Broadway of Olive Branch could be remembered for many things; but his love for life and gentle disposition seemed to stick out the most, according to loved ones. As the last remaining son of eight children, Broadway passed away on Feb. 24, 2003; he was 84. He had been married to his wife, Anne Bryan Broadway, for 54 years.

Broadway lived a large life, according to daughter Janice Anglin, who has been a schoolteacher at Greenbrook Elementary for many years.

"He was a very special person," said Janice, "Daddy was an outdoorsman who just loved to be outside. He would go outside just to feed the birds and the squirrels, and he liked to watch the chipmunks."

"Daddy was a dairyman and a farmer for years, and when he sold the business, that was when he started fishing a lot," she added. "But he really went down just to feed the fish rather than catch them. He had some catfish that would come up and eat what he would feed them; some of them he even had names for."

Broadway’s son Aubrey, who is an Olive Branch police officer, said his father had a love for baseball.

"He used to play for community ball teams when he was younger," said Aubrey, "that was his reason for having cable television was so he could watch the games—he loved his baseball.

"Chances were if you came over to the house and the television was on, there was a ballgame going."

"Daddy loved to listen to Jerry Clower," said Janice. "He would get the biggest kick out of listening to it, and then he would turn around and tell the same joke."

Broadway also served in the United States Army and was a veteran of World War II.

"He used to tell us (Janice and Aubrey) stories about the war," said Aubrey. "He told us this one story about being on a ship, when a submarine shot a torpedo at the boat. He remembered watching the torpedo come right next to the boat—barely missing it."

Broadway also had a wide range of vocations during his life. Not only did he operate a dairy farm, he was a postal carrier for 16 years, and was one of the original founders of the Lewisburg Fire Department.

"There was nobody better," said Aubrey. "He was always there if you needed him."

"Daddy will be missed so much," said Janice. "We still expect the door to open and for him to come walking in with his coveralls and his toboggan on his little bald head."

Broadway left behind a wife and two children.
