Rev. Robert L. (Bud) Jordan, Sr.

July 23, 2003

Rev. Robert L. (Bud) Jordan, Sr. , 83, died Wednesday, July 23, 2003 at the Winston Medial Center. A graveside memorial service was held Friday, July 25 at 2 p. m. at Memorial Park. Porter Funeral Home in Louisville was in charge.

Rev. Jordan was a Baptist pastor for 43 ears and retired from service in 1989. He was licensed and ordained by First Baptist Church of Louisville when the late Rev. W. L. Day was pastor there. Bro. Jordan attended Clarke and Mississippi Colleges and New Orleans Theological Seminary.

His first pastorates were Gum Branch, Enon, and Union Ridge Churches in Winston County, then Pleasant Ridge in Oktibbeha County and Chester in Choctaw County, Pheba at Pheba, Sidon at Sidon, Lake at Lake, Maben at Maben, Lakeview at Leland, Mt. Vernon at Eupora, and Wake Forest at Sturgis. He was also a Bible teacher in the Starkville School System for many years.

Bro. Jordan is survived by his wife, Lavernas Nichols Jordan of Louisville; one daughter, Jean Alley of Florence; one son and daughter-in-law, Dr. and Mrs. Robert L. Jordan, Jr. of Meridian; his brother, Jack Jordan of Montezuma Wells, AZ; two sisters, Mary Wood of Louisville, KY and Doris Thrasher of Sargus, CA; five grandchildren and nine great-grandchildren.

The family requests that memorials be made to the Baptist Children's Village in Jackson.

Mr. Robert Charles Simmons

July 15, 2003

Services for Robert Charles Simmons, 54, were held at 2 p. m. on Saturday, July 19, 2003 at Porter Funeral Home with Rev. Larry Ferris officiating. Burial followed in Mashulaville Baptist Cemetery.

Mr. Simmons died on July 15, 2003 in his home.

He was born on December 25, 1948 in Noxubee County and was an auto mechanic.

He was a Navy veteran of the Vietnam War and recipient of the Purple Heart and Bronze Star medals.

Survivors include, his mother, Harriet Drake Simmons of Macon; two daughters Jennifer Leigh Helt of Buford, SC and Kathy Fiorentino of Steelton, PA; one sister, Karen Bosher of Albarado, TX; and three grandchildren.

Porter Funeral Home was in charge of the arrangements.

Mr. James Holton

July 22, 2003

Services for James Holton, 73, were held at 10 a. m. on Thursday, July 24, 2003 at Porter Funeral Home with Rev. Eddie Pilgrim officiating. Burial followed in Memorial Park Cemetery.

Mr. Holton died on July 22, 2003 in his son's home in Pearl.

He was born on September 16, 1929 in Noxapater and was a Tire Shop manager for K&W. He was a veteran of the Korean War, and a member of the First Baptist Church.

Mr. Holton was married to the late Shirley Holton.

Survivors include, one daughter, Patricia McKay of Columbus; one son Randy Holton of Pearl; six grandchildren; one great-grandchild; five sisters, Ollie Mae Reeves of Jackson, Hazel Wiley of Louisville, Ludine Miles of Noxapater, Irene Matson of Noxapater, and Doris Shepard of Noxapater; one sister-in-law, Lee Holton of Noxapater

Porter Funeral Home was in charge of the arrangements.

Mr. R. W. Wells

August 1, 2003

Services for R. W. Wells, 75, were held at 10 a. m. on Monday, August 4, 2003 at Center Ridge United Methodist Church with Rev. Bo Mills officiating. Burial followed at the church cemetery.

Mr. Wells died on August 1, 2003 in his home .

He was born on September 3, 1927 in Winston County. He was an Air Force veteran of World War II and a retired aeronautics engineer for Excello in Detroit, MI. He is also a member of Center Ridge United Methodist Church.

Survivors include, his wife, Phyllis Brown Mills of Louisville; four daughters, Patricia Hinson of Hohenwald, TN, Linda Spivey of Detroit, MI, Fay Shadrick of Kiln, and Joyce Cadez of Melvindale, MI; one son, Grady Bryant of Detroit Michigan; two sisters, Doris Sowell of Columbus and Annie Joyce Mills of Louisville; one brother James Harold Mills of Starkville; 16 grandchildren; and 16 great-grandchildren.

Mr. Mills was preceded in death by his son, Paul Bryant.

Porter Funeral Home was in charge of the arrangements.

Mrs. Iva Barnhill Hendrix

July 30, 2003

Services for Iva Barnhill Hendrix, 92, were held at 2 p. m. on Friday, August 1, 2003 at Porter Funeral Home with Rev. Charles Davis officiating. Burial followed in New Hope Cemetery.

Mrs. Hendrix died on July 30, 2003 in the Winston County Nursing Home.

She was born on June 14, 1911 in Winston County and was a member of New Hope Methodist Church. She was a homemaker, owner of Hendrix Grocery, and for many years, a member of the Winston County Library Board of Trustees. Mrs. Hendrix was married to the late Talmadge Hendrix.

Survivors include, five daughters, Joy Childs, Rebecca Ellis, and Sue Pate, all of Louisville, Barbara Mathews of Franklin, GA, and Linda Childs of Arkadelphia, GA; two sons, Jerry Hendrix of Louisville and Joe M. Hendrix of Columbus; 19 grandchildren; 11 great-grandchildren.

Porter Funeral Home was in charge of the arrangements.

Mrs. Clara Bell Clemons

July 23, 2003

Services for Clara Bell Clemons, 81, were held at 11 a. m. on Saturday, July 26, 2003 at Mars Hill Church of God in Christ with Rev. Clemons and Superintendent Isaac Harris officiating. Burial followed in the church cemetery.

Mrs. Clemons died on July 23, 2003, of kidney failure in Neshoba County Hospital.

She was born on July 11, 1922 in Neshoba County. She was retired and a member of Mars Hill Church of God in Christ.

Survivors include, her husband, Wilson Clemons of Philadelphia; four daughters, Eldera Clemons of Philadelphia, Dorothy Hunt and Clara Tanksley both of Collinsville, and Carolyn Clemons of Ellisville; five sons, Obadiah Clemons of Meridian, Thomas Clemons of Byhalia, Wilson Clemons, Jr. of Philadelphia, Cleothis Clemons of Ellisville, and Joseph Clemons of Philadelphia.

Williams and Herring Funeral Home was in charge of the arrangements.

Mr. Julius Smith, Jr.

July 31, 2003

Services for Julius Smith, Jr. , 101, were held at 1 p. m. on Monday, August 4, 2003 at Bethel M. B. Church with Rev. Floizell Wilson officiating. Burial followed in the church cemetery.

Mr. Smith died on July 31, 2003, of heart failure in Winston County Medical Center.

He was born on July 4, 1902 in Winston County. He was a member of Bethel M. B. Church.

Survivors include, his wife, Maria Smith of Louisville; five daughters, Ruby Harden of Louisville, Thelma Ash, Minnie Alex, M. L. Williams, and Erlene Johnson, all of Cleveland, OH; two sons, Frank Smith of Louisville and James Smith of Cleveland, OH; one sister, Adlee Sanders of South Carolina; and a host of grandchildren, great grandchildren, great-great grandchildren, and other relatives and friends.

Mr. Sylvester "Sam" Carter

June 24, 2003

Services for Sylvester "Sam" Carter, 66, were held at 2 p. m. on Sunday, July 27, 2003 at Mt. Talley M. B. Church with Rev. Eddie Winston officiating. Burial followed in the church cemetery.

Mr. Carter died on July 24, 2003, of a heart attack at his home in Philadelphia.

He was born on January 8, 1937 in Winston County. He was a member of Mt. Talley M. B. Church. He worked as a serviceman for Peco Foods and was active in the Masonic Lodge #608, and a deputy for the Forestry Association.

Survivors include, his wife, Billie Carter of Philadelphia; one daughter, Vickie Carter of Philadelphia; one son Charles Carter of Columbus; two sisters, Dorothy Seales and Mildred L. Hudson both of Philadelphia; three brothers, Tommy Carter of Detroit, MI, Larry Carter of Philadelphia, and Wardell Carter of Columbus.

Williams and Herring Funeral Home was in charge of the arrangements.

Mr. Larry Charles Chandler

July 21, 2003

Services for Larry Charles Chandler, 55, were held Saturday, July 26, 2003 at New Zion Baptist Church with Rev. Bob Mamrak officiating. Burial followed in Weir Cemetery.

Mr. Chandler died of a heart attack on July 21, 2003 in his home in Weir.

He was born February 27, 1948 in Attala County. He was a member of New Zion Baptist Church and a sales representative for Farmland Foods in Kansas City, MO

Survivors include, one daughter, Angie Worden of Alpharetta, GA; his mother, Mildred Chandler of Weir; four brothers, Don Chandler, Robert Chandler, and Jerry Chandler, all of Weir and David Chandler of Jackson; three sisters, Elouise Bain of Louisville, Elaine Phillips of Albertville, AL, and Debbie Mays of Ripley, TN; two grandchildren

Pallbearers were Ken Chandler, Robbie Chandler, Dave Bane, Allen Chandler, Lee Phillips, Chris Chandler, Justin Jones, and Nicky Simmons.

Nowell Funeral Home was in charge of the arrangements.

The family requests that memorials be made to New Zion Baptist Church in Weir.

Mr. Billy Joe King

August 2, 2003

Services for Billy Joe King, 76, were held Monday, August 4, 2003 at Nowell Funeral Home Chapel with Rev. Dave Elliot and Rev. Jerry Lawson officiating. Burial followed in Old Lebanon Cemetery.

Mr. King died of heart failure on August 2, 2003 at the North Mississippi Medical Center in Tupelo.

He was born May 11, 1927 in Choctaw County. He was a member of Old Lebanon Presbyterian Church and retired from B&W Corporation in West Point. Mr. King was also an Army Veteran of WWII.

Survivors include, his wife, Mavis King of Weir; one brother, Allie Gene King of Weir; 2 nieces, 3 great-nieces; one great-nephew; and one great great niece.

Nowell Funeral Home was in charge of the arrangements.

Homer A. Strickline

July 25, 2003

Homer A. Strickline, 74 of Philadelphia died July 25, 2003, at Rush Hospital in Meridian.

Mr. Strickline was born on Dec. 5, 1928, in Choctaw County. He was a retired crane operator for General Motors and a Baptist.

Survivors include his wife, Evelyn Strickline of Philadelphia; one son, Randy Strickline and wife, Kathy, of Olive Branch; one daughter, Susan Hammerdorp and husband, Rob, of Philadelphia; one grandson, Turner Blaine of Philadelphia; three brothers, Hubert Strickline and Billy Strickline of Ackerman, and Finley Strickline of Brandon; one sister, Nellie Faye Mitchell of Jackson; one half-brother, Harvey Strickline of Jackson; three half-sisters, Priscilla Edwards of Eupora, Vickie McElroy of Hernando and Audry Steadman of Alabama; and numerous nieces and nephews.

Services were July 27 at Nowell Funeral Home Chapel in Ackerman with the Rev. Larry Ferris officiating. Burial was in Fentress Cemetery.

Memorials may be made to Philadelphia First Church of Nazarene Building Fund, 902 Blount St. , Philadelphia, MS 39350.
