Mrs. Mary Jane McDowell Jones

Tuesday, December 5, 2006

Funeral services for Mrs. Mary Jane McDowell Jones, 79, were held at 10:00 a. m. Thursday, December 7, 2006, at Calvary Baptist Church in Starkville. Rev. Matthew Myers officiated. Burial followed in Concord Baptist Cemetery near Ackerman.

A native of Choctaw County, Mrs. Jones was a homemaker and a graduate of Ackerman High School and Clark College. She was also a member of Calvary Baptist Church and the Esther Sunday School class. At his death, her husband served as pastor at McCondy Baptist Church in Chickasaw County and was director of missions for Amite and Wilkinson counties in Liberty, MS. Mrs. Jones died Tuesday, December 5, 2006, at Vickers Personal Care Home in Starkville where she had been a resident since September.

Survivors include her daughter, Pam McCully of Starkville; one brother, Myron McDowell of Dayton, TX; four sisters, Margie Grantham of Athens, TX, Donna Sexton of Clinton, MS, Della Thompson of Starkville, and Elsie Todd of Hattiesburg; and three grandchildren.

Memorials may be made to Calvary Baptist Church in Starkville, the Mississippi Baptist Children's Village, or the Arthritis Foundation.

Coleman Funeral Home of Ackerman was in charge of arrangements.

Mrs. Dorothy Jones Meyer

Funeral mass services for Mrs. Dorothy Jones Meyer, 89, were held at 11:00 a. m. at St. Michael Catholic Church. Rev. P. J. Curley, pastor, officiated. Burial followed in Green Acres Cemetery.

A native of Louisville, Mrs. Meyer was a registered nurse. She graduated from Bond High School in Louisville and went on to receive her registered nursing degree from the Vicksburg Infirmary in 1939 where she began her 43-year nursing career, retiring in 1982 from Kuhn Memorial State Hospital. Mrs. Meyer was a member of the Mississippi State Nurses Association, the VFW Ladies Auxiliary, and was a communicant of St. Michael Catholic Church. Mrs. Meyer died Wednesday, December 6, 2006, at Heritage House.

Survivors include her daughter, Katherine Meyer Turcotte of Vicksburg, MS; son, William Charles "Buddy" Meyer of Savannah, GA; three sisters, Susie McKay of Vicksburg, Lucy Canizaro of Jackson, and Dina McKay of Louisville; six grandchildren, 14 great-grandchildren, and one great-great-grandchild.

Pallbearers were her grandchildren Jeff Turcotte, Greg Turcotte, Tim Turcotte, Steve Turcotte, Shay Meyer, and Kim Meyer. Honorary pallbearers were the staff of the Heritage House and the staff of PAX Hospice.

Memorials may be made to the Komen Breast Cancer Foundation, 5005 LBJ Freeway, Suite 250, Dallas, TX 75244; or to St. Jude Children's Research Hospital, 501 St. Jude Place, Memphis, TN 38105.

Mrs. Merra Olene Cutts Oswalt

Funeral services for Mrs. Merra Olene Cutts Oswalt, 90, were held at 11:00 a. m. Monday, December 11, 2006, at Coleman Funeral Home in Ackerman. Rev. Dewitt Cutts and Rev. Prentiss Gordon officiated. Burial followed in Enon Cemetery in Ackerman.

A native of Choctaw County, Mrs. Oswalt was a homemaker and a member of Big Creek United Methodist Church in Sturgis. Mrs. Oswalt died Friday, December 8, 2006, at Vickers Personal Home in Starkville.

Survivors include her two sons, J. Donald Oswalt of Sturgis and Ronald J. Oswalt of Park Hills, KY; one daughter, Deborah G. Edwards of Eupora; one brother, Richard Cutts of Weir; one sister, Ilene McQuirter of Winona; one grandchild and one great-grandchild.

Memorials may be made to Big Creek United Methodist Church Building Fund in Sturgis.

Mrs. Mary Nell Jackson

Mrs. Mary Nell Jackson, 73 years old, passed away on May 30, 2010, at Winston County Nursing Home. Funeral services are at Nowell Massey Funeral Chapel in Louisville on Wednesday June 2, 2010 with burial following in Memorial Park Cemetery. Rev. Lloyd Adcock, Rev. Mike Miles and Rev. Norman Sanders officiating ministries.

She was born June 28, 1936 and was a retired store clerk and a member of Assembly of God Movement.

She is survived by her husband J. B. Jackson of Louisville, one son Randy Jackson of Louisville, one sister Dorothy Cumberland Files of De Kalb, one brother Lonnie Cumberland of Louisville, and three grandchildren.

Pallbearers were Greg Henderson, Patrick Holdiness, Michael Tolbert, Bodie Tolbert, Darrell Snow, and Jeffery Pilgrim.

Memorials may be made to Winston Medical Center Nursing Home.

Mr. Jerry Craig Estes Jr.

Jerry Craig Estes, Jr, 48, a Retired Louisville Electric System employee where he was employed for twenty-seven years. , died Wednesday, May 26, 2010, at Louisville.

Visitation was Thursday, 8 am to 2 pm at Nowell-Massey Funeral Home in Louisville. Funeral services were 2 pm Friday at First United Methodist Church in Louisville, MS with burial in the Calvary Baptist Church Cemetery. Nowell-Massey Funeral Home in Louisville was handling the arrangements.

He was a Louisville native, a graduate of Louisville High School, and attended ECCC. He was a member of the First United Methodist Church of Louisville.

Survivors include: daughter: Hope Estes Jackson; a son: Brett Estes; and his parents: Jerry and Ilene Estes, all of Louisville; a sister: Cherie (Jim) Bell; and two nephews: Brandon and Logan Bell of Caledonia.

Pallbearers are Steve Ball, Hal Estes, Joey Estes, Patrick Estes, Ronnie Flake, Carl Flake, Danny Fuller and Keith Ming. Honorary pallbearers are the 2008-2009 Winston Academy senior, football players.

Memorials may be sent to Palmer Home or the St. Jude Children's Research Hospital .

Mr. Billy Joe Black, Sr.

Funeral services for Mr. Billy Joe Black, Sr. , 67, were held at 2:00 P. M. Friday, January 14, 2005, at Enon Cumberland Presbyterian Church in Ackerman. Rev. Jerry Lawson officiated. Burial followed in Enon Cemetery in Ackerman.

A resident of Ackerman, Mr. Black was a co-owner and partner of Black's Dozer. He was a member of Enon Cumberland Presbyterian Church in Ackerman. Mr. Black died Tuesday, January 11, 2005, in Choctaw County.

Survivors include his two sons, Gill Black of Columbus, and Billy Joe Black, Jr. , of Ackerman; two daughters, Sherry Estes of Louisville and Debbie Stevens of Caledonia, MS; brother, Bobby Black of Ackerman; and seven grandchildren.

Memorials may be made to French Camp Academy in French Camp, MS, or to the American Heart Association.

Mr. Lawrence H. Fulgham

Lawrence Fulgham, 85, of Louisville, MS, passed away Friday, January 14, 2005, in Louisville. Graveside services were held at 1:00 P. M. Tuesday, January 18, 2005, at Pleasant View Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Jo Co 4H Dog Club College Scholarship Fund, 13480 S. Arapaho Dr. , Olathe, KS 66062.

Lawrence is survived by his daughters, Linda Rayburn and Glinda Salyer; son, Richard Fulgham; step-son, Barney Smith; sister, Lesi Mae Gill; brother, Noah Lee Fulgham; seven grandchildren, six great-grandchildren, and seven great-great-grandchildren.

Amos Family Chapel of Shawnee was in charge of arrangements.

Mrs. Violet Sullivan Higginbotham

Funeral services for Mrs. Violet Sullivan Higginbotham, 75, were held at 2:00 P. M. Friday, January 14, 2005, at Soul Harbor Pentecostal Church in Shuqualak, MS. Rev. Gerald Butler, Rev. Bobby Joe Butler, and Rev. Allen Eaves officiated. Burial followed in Jacksonfield Cemetery.

A native of Gholson, MS, Mrs. Higginbotham was a homemaker. She was a member of Soul Harbor Pentecostal Church in Shuqualak. Mrs. Higginbotham died Wednesday, January 12, 2005, at the Jeff Anderson Medical Center in Meridian, MS.

Survivors include her four daughters, Barbara Bean of Preston, Brenda Butler of Shuqualak, Paul McDaniel of Preston, and Debra Martin of Brandon; sister, June Triplett of Preston; three brothers, Opal Sullivan of Louisville, Berland Sullivan of Madison Heights, Michigan, and Doyle Sullivan of Preston; 11 grandchildren and 10 great-grandchildren.

Memorials may be made to the American Cancer Society or Soul Harbor Pentecostal Church Building Fund.

Mrs. Sadie Jackson Hunt

Mrs. Sadie Jackson Hunt, 97, died Wednesday, January 12, 2005, at the Arbor Nursing Home in Jackson, MS. Graveside services were held at 1:30 P. M. Saturday, January 15, 2005, at Enon Cemetery in Ackerman, MS, with Rev. Prentiss Gordon officiating. Visitation was Saturday, January 15, 2005, from 11 A. M. until 1 P. M. at the Coleman Funeral Home in Ackerman.

Mrs. Hunt was a lifelong resident of Oktibbeha County. She was a member of the Sturgis United Methodist Church where she taught Sunday School for many years. She was a homemaker and a farmer. Mrs. Hunt was active in the Oktibbeha County Home Extension Service for many years, an avid gardener, and an expert seamstress. She loved to read and was a world traveler.

Survivors include her two daughters, Sylvia Nell Hunt Walker of Jackson and Majel Hunt Dean of Osyka, MS; six grandchildren, six great-grandchildren, and one great-great-grandchild; and two sisters, Celia Jackson Welch of Starkville and Helen Jackson Quinn of Madison.

Memorials may be made to Pleasant Hill Cemetery Fund c/o Mrs. Frances Jackson, 579 Pleasant Hill Road, Sturgis, MS 39769.

Miss Mary Louise Smith

Funeral services for Miss Mary Louise Smith, 99, were held at 11 A. M. Friday, January 14, 2005, at Ackerman United Methodist Church. Rev. George Buell officiated. Burial followed at Enon Cemetery in Ackerman.

A resident of Ackerman, Miss Smith was a secretary for a number of years and served as Chancery Clerk for two terms. She was the last survivor of nine in her high school graduating class. Miss Smith died Tuesday, January 11, 2005, at the Choctaw County Nursing Home in Ackerman.

Survivors include her niece, Mary Lou Cooper of Ackerman, and nephew, Clyde McGhee of Nixon, Missouri.

Memorials may be made to Ackerman United Methodist Church Repair Fund.

Mr. Laurel G. Weir

Mr. Laurel G. Weir, 76, died Wednesday, January 12, 2005, at Jeff Anderson Regional Medical Center in Meridian, MS. Services were held at 2 P. M. Friday, January 14, 2005, in the McClain-Hays Funeral Home Chapel. Dr. Dan Howard officiated. Burial followed in Eastlawn Cemetery in Philadelphia.

Mr. Weir was born in Walnut Grove, Leake County, MS, in 1928 and spent most of his life in Neshoba County, MS. He was a graduate of Philadelphia High School and furthered his education at East Central Community College and received his law degree from Jackson School of Law. Upon receiving his law degree, he was the youngest attorney admitted to the Mississippi State Bar Association at the age of 21. He was a licensed and practicing attorney for 55 years, practicing in Neshoba County and throughout the State of Mississippi. He was a member of the Neshoba County Bar Association, the Mississippi Bar Association, and the American Bar Association. He also served in the Fifth Circuit Court of Appeals and the United States Supreme Court. He was a member of the Mississippi Trial Lawyers Association. Early in his career he served as County Attorney and was of counsel for the Neshoba County School Board and Neshoba County Hospital.

He was a member of First Baptist Church, Philadelphia, MS, where he taught Sunday School for many years. He was a Master Mason, Shriner, Member Order of the Eastern Star, and Woodmen of the World. He continued to attend Sunday School through the Outreach Sunday School Class (a. k. a. Golfer's Sunday School Class), at First Baptist Church.

He is survived by his wife of 55 years, Ouida Mae Herring Weir, and six children, Laurel Thomas Weir, William Gill Weir, Melissa Burnett, Stephanie Partridge (all of Philadelphia), Susan Clark Cook of Vestavia Hills, AL, and Sandra Barrett of Ocala, Florida. He leaves 15 grandchildren and 8 great-grandchildren.

Pallbearers were Brian Weir, Chad Clark, Riley Clark, Tyler Burnett, Josh Moore, Curtis Moore, Frank Moore, and Bill Lovorn. Honorary Pallbearers were the Golfer's Sunday School Class of First Baptist Church and members of the Neshoba County Bar Association.

McClain-Hays Funeral Services, Inc. , of Philadelphia was in charge of arrangements.

Mr. Anthony Terrell Yates

Funeral services for Mr. Anthony Terrell Yates, 26, were held at 2:00 P. M. Monday, January 10, 2005, at Hopewell United Methodist Church in Louisville. Rev. Jerry Hinton officiated. Burial followed in the church cemetery.

A native of Louisville, Mr. Yates was a laborer. He was a member of Hopewell United Methodist Church in Louisville. Mr. Yates died Wednesday, January 5, 2005, at the Oktibbeha County Hospital in Starkville.

Survivors include his father, Robert Yates of Louisville; his mother, Virginia Yates of Louisville; two step-sons, DeNelson A. Walker and NeDarion C. Roberts, both of Louisville; two sisters, Shirley Mallard and Joanne Arterberry, both of Louisville; and two brothers, Odell Coleman and David Coleman, both of Louisville.
