PHILIPP - MABEL MARIE JEFFORDS AVENT, 81, homemaker and former employee of Conmar Zipper Co., died Friday February 11, 1994, of cancer at Greenwood-Leflore Hospital. Services were 2 p.m. Monday February 14, 1994 at Wilson & Knight Funeral Home with burial in Magnolia Garden cemetery in Paynes. She was a member of Philipp Baptist Church, where she taught Sunday School for more that 50 years. She leaves a daughter, Betty Sue Avent McGregor of Sumner; a son Arlie Ray Avent of Hernando; four sisters, Cordea Cooper of Michigan, Gladys Baker of Muskegon, Mich., Opal B. Council of Paducah, KY, and Bessie Johnson of Southaven, seven grandchildren and eight great-grandchildren.

DREW - GREGORY A. HOLDEN, 23, formerly of Drew was killed Friday, Feb. 6, 1994, as a result of an explosion while working in Ft. Payne, Ala. The Funeral service was held at Scott Funeral Home in Chatman, Va. on Friday, Feb. 11, 1994. He leaves his wife, Danielle Holden, one son, Daniel and one daughter, Kayla Michelle of Chatman, Va.; his parents, Frank and Nina Holden of Drew and Dee Mullins of Memphis; one brother Chris McNulty of Colorado Springs; his grandmother Lucille Browning of Webb and grandparents Mr. and Mrs. M. A. McNulty of Drew.

GRENADA - MICHAEL BRADLEY WILSON, 10 year old son of Mary Alice and Jack Benjamin Wilson, died Friday, Feb. 18, 1994 at LeBonheure Children's Medical Center in Memphis after an auto accident. Services were 2 p.m., Sunday Feb. 20, 1994 at Emmanuel Baptist Church in Grenada wiith burial in Memorial Gardens cemetery. Garner-Harper Funeral Home had charge. He also leaves a sister, Amy Michelle Wilson, and a brother, Jack Benjamin Wilson, II, both of Grenada; his grandparents, Mr. and Mrs. Ralph Rounsaville and Rose Wilson of Grenada, and Mr. and Mrs. Henry G. Wilson, III of Duck Hill; and his great-grandparents, Henry G. Wilson, II of Duck Hill and Mr. and Mrs. Benford McGarrity of Charleston.

CHARLESTON - DAVID ANDREW ASHMORE, 4-month-old son of Tracy Ashmore of Charleston and Andres Loya of Nesbit, died Monday, Feb. 21, 1994, after and accidental choking on a candy drop, at Tallahatchie General Hospital. Graveside services were at 2 p.m. Wednesday, Feb. 23, 1994 at Bethel cemetery in Enid, Newsom Funeral Home had charge of arrangements. He also leaves a sister, Beatriz Loya of Charleston, and his grandparents, Adres and Librada Loya of Mexico, and Vera Ashmore of Batesville.

ENID - ELLA MAE PURNELL, 69, homemaker, died Monday, Sept. 12, 1994, of heart disease at South Panola Community Hospital in Batesville. Services were 5 p.m. Sunday, Sept. 18, at Persimmon Hill Missionary Baptist Church in Enid, with burial in Persimmon Hill cemetery. Cooley's Mortuary Inc. had charge. She leaves six daughters, Colettie House Alexander and Rosie Purnell, both of Enid, Corrine Thomas of Los Angeles, Lenora Benson of Oakland and Dorothy Moore and Gloria Purnell both of Detroit; three sons, Jerry Purnell of Grenada and Jacob Purnell and Kenny Purnell both of Enid; five sisters, Eva King of Oxford, Letoria Taylor and Prennie Person both of Milwaukee, Samantha Webb of Tillatoba and Suretha Taylor of Jackson; a brother, Clinton Taylor of Charleston, 25 grandchildren and 28 great-grandchildren.

GLENDORA - HAYWOOD ROSS, 80, retired barber, died thursday Sept. 22, 1994, of cancer at Greenwood Leflore Hospital. Services were 2 p.m. Tuesday Sept, 27, at Old Antioch Baptist Church in Sumner with burial in the church cemetery. M.J. Edwards & Sons Funeral Home in Memphis had charge. He was a member of Brooklyn Baptist Church in Webb. The husband of Gracie B. Ross, he also leaves four daughters, Alice Clark of Gainsville, Texas, Alicie Blissit of St. Louis, Izener Dixon and Angel D. Ross, both of Webb; three sisters, Ethel Sartent of Chicago, Natchie Moore of Gary, Ind., Willie Mae Guetty of West Helena, Ark.; a brother, Jessie Rogers of Gary, 11 grandchildren, 14 great-grandchildren and a great-great-grandchild.

FAYETTEVILLE, GA - JAMES RUBEN GRIER, 56 Captain pilot for an airline, died Aug. 6, 1994. Funeral services were held Wednesday, Aug. 10, a 2 p.m. at the New Hope Baptist Church where he was a member with Dr. Ike Reighard officiating. Interment was in the church cemetery with full military honors. Mowell Funeral Home had charge. He is survived by his wife, Shirley Dahl Grier of Fayetteville; three daughters, Miss Gwen Grier of Decater Ga. Miss Cynthia Grier and Miss Katrina Grier, both of Fayetteville; his mother, Mrs. Dorothy T. Grier of Wetumopka, Ala. and all of the Dahl family.

TUTWILER - OPAL BRITNELL JACKSON, 63 homemaker, died Tuesday, Sept. 27, 1994, of heart failure at Northwest Mississipi Medical Center in Clarksdale. Services were 2 p.m. Thursday, Sept. 29, at McNeil-Nowell Funeral Home of Clarksdale with burial in Rosemound cemetery in Tutwiler. She was a member of Lurand Baptist Church. Mrs. Jackson, the wife of Ray Jackson, also leaves four sisters, Dolly Faye Boyett and I. V. Vanlandingham, both of Clarksdale. Inez Jackson of Haleyville, Ala. and Jean Rosemond of Grenada and two brothers, Ruben Britnell and Coy Britnell, both of Haleyville.

JACKSON - ROY D. BYARS, JR., 75, of Briarfield Road, died Sept. 27, 1994 at the Mississippi Baptist Medical Center from heart failure. Services were 3:30 p.m. Thursday, Sept. 28, at Wright & Ferguson High Street Chapel with burial in Parkway Memorial cemetery at Ridgeland. He was a retired automobile salesman. He was born icon at Cascilla in Tallahatchie County to Dr. and Mrs. Roy D. Byars and graduated from Cascilla High School and attended Millsaps College and Mississippi State where he was a member of K.A. fraternity. He was inducted in the Army in 1941 and saw action in Company A. 29th Field Artillary, in Normandy, Northern France, Rhineland, Ardennes and Central Europe, He received the Bronze Star Medal, Good Conduct, American Defense and Bronze Indian Arrowhead. In June of this year he visited Normandy and participated in the 50th anniversary of "D Day" and he was a member of the Battle of the Budge. He was a member of Broadmoor Baptist Church where he was a member of the Sunday School Class. He was a member of the Walter Scott Coffee Club and had been employed as a salesman for Blackwell Chevrolet for 29 years. Survivors include his wife, Ruth Savage Byars of Jackson; daughter, Georgia Hall of Sand Hill; son, Roy D. Byars of Belzoni; two brothers, Joe Randolph Byars of Marks and George Rice Byars of Memphis and four grandchildren.

CHARLESTON - CRATIA OPHELIA ASTON, 86, homemaker, died Saturday, Oct. 1, 1994, of heart disease at Tallahatchie General Hospital. Services were 2 p.m. today at Newsom Funeral Home with burial in Friendship cemetery. She was the church clerk at Friendship Church of God. Mrs. Aston was the widow of William H. Aston.

OAKLAND - MARY RICE BURT, 85, homemaker, died of heart disease Sunday, Oct. 2, 1994, at Grenada Lake Medical Center. Services were 3 p.m. Tuesday, Oct. 4, at Mt. Pisgah Baptist Church, where she was a member, with burial in Pine Hill cemetery. Newsom Funeral Home had charge of arrangements. A native of Tallahatchie County, she was active in the Missionary Society at Mt. Pigah and taught Sunday School for many years. The wife of Herman C. Burt, she is survived by many nieces and nephews.

TUTWILER - JOHNNY HARRISON CHILDRESS, 65, of D'Iberville, formerly of Tutwiler, truck driver for Graber Brothers Gas Co. died Saturday, Oct. 8, 1994, of cancer at Gulfport Memorial Hospital. Services were 2 p.m. Monday, Oct. 10, at Sumner (Miss) Church of God, where he was a member, with burial in Rosemound cemetery. McNeil-Nowell Funeral Home of Clarksdale has charge.

TUTWILER - ALMA BRUISTER ORMAN, age 87, died Sunday Oct. 9, at Greenbough Nursing Center in Clarksdale. Services were 2 p.m. Tuesday Oct. 11, 1994, at First Baptist Church in Tutwiler with Rev. J.B. Hays and Rev. Claude Johnson officiating. She was a member of First Baptist Church and she attended Martha Washington College in Virginia. The widow of Samuel Cain Orman, she is survived by one daughter, Vera Jo Bryant of Ruleville; one son, Samuel Bruister Orman of Tutwiler; one sister, Edna B. Stillions of Tutwiler and 6 grandchildren, 11 great-grandchildren and 2 step-great-grandchildren.

CLARKSDALE - ALBERT SIDNEY 'SID' TURNER, 55 died Monday, Oct. 10, 1994, at his residence of cancer. Services were 3:30 p.m. Wednesday, Oct. 12, at Oakridge cemetery with Dr. Carl White officiating. McNeil-Nowell Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements. He was the owner and operator of Turner Air Service. He began his career as an agricultural pilot thirty-seven years ago in Crenshaw. He later worked for Williams Flying Service, during which time he worked in Nicaragua, Central America, spraying chemicals on cotton and bananas. In 1974, he began his own business, Turner Air Service. He is survived by his wife, Loretta Bennett Turner of Clarksdale; one daughter, Leslie Turner Reece of Cordova, Tenn.; two sons, Lee Bennett Turner of Tunica and C. Kelly Turner of Oxford; one sister, Amy Turner of Memphis and Jess Turner of Dallas and two grandchildren.

LOS ANGELES, CALIF. - FRANCES LAUGHLIN STARK, age 77, died June 28, 1994, in Los Angeles. Services were held July 5, at Forest Lawn, Glendale, Calif. She was born icon in Tallahatchie County. She is survived by two daughters, Ann Duncan of Colorado and Brenda Emmons of Lancaster, Calif.; one son, Charles Hoover of Calif; 4 grandchildren and 2 great-grandchildren.

WATER VALLEY - EVELYN J. WINTER, 80 a homemaker, died of a stroke Friday, Oct. 14, 1994, at baptist Memorial hospital-North Mississippi in Oxford. Services were 2 p.m. Friday, Oct. 15, at Newsom Funeral Home in Charleston with burial in Needmore cemetery in Tippo. Mrs Winter, a former Tippo resident, was a member of Tippo Church of God of Prophecy. Survivors include a daughter, Velma W. Norris of Water valley.

MYRTLE - CARL DENNIS YOUNG, 53, plant supervisor for Landua Corp. died Wednesday, Oct. 12, 1994, at Methodist Hospital in Memphis. Funeral services were held at 2 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 15, at Williams & Lord Funeral Home of Ruleville with burial in Lehrton cemetery in Ruleville. The husband of Jo Ann Young, he also leaves a daughter, Patricia Russell of St. Louis, a son, Carl Dennis Young, Jr. of Fort Bragg, N.C. two step-daughters, Glenda Leoncini of New Mexico, and Vicki Clifton of Demopolis, Ala.; a step-son, Don Jackson of Burnsville; eight sisters, Mary Peters of Lula, Katie Wright of Hickory Flat, Nadine "Skippy" Young of Southaven, Rose Mary Robinson of Drew, Fannie Wooten of Jackson, Linda McFate of Hanover, Mich., Bonnie Reece of Elko, Nev., and Jenny Young of Laramie, Wyo.; three brothers, Thomas Young of Cooter, Mo., and Albert Young and Frankie Young, both of Charleston and five grandchildren.

CHARLESTON - BARNEY FLYNN HARGETT, 94, retired farmer, died Saturday, Oct. 29, 1994, of heart disease at Tallahatchie General Hospital. Services were 2 p.m. Sunday, Oct 30, at Charleston Church of God, where he was a member, with burial in Charleston cemetery. Newsom Funeral Home had charge of arrangements. the husband of Frankie Champion Hargett, he also leaves four daughters, Earlene Powell and Charlotte Richards, both of Charleston, Maxine Serio of Greenville and Peggy Vance of Webb; five sons, Robert Hargett, Claudie Hargett and David Hargett, all of Charleston, Ed Hargett of Parchman and Steve Hargett of Greenville, 25 grandchildren and 27 great-grandchildren.

LON BEACH - OPAL MARIE LAWSON, 84, died Monday, Sept. 19, 1994, in Gulfport. Mrs Lawson was a native of Charleston and had been a Mississippi Coast resident since 1970. She was a homemaker and a Baptist. Burial was in Gulf Pine Memorial Garden in Long Beach. She is survived by a brother, Virgil Lawson of Gulfport and three sisters, Johnnie Gray and Helen Farris both of Gulfport, and Laura Parnell of Grenada, . She was preceded in death by three brothers, J.C Lawson, of Coffeeville, John Lawson of Clarksdale and Ory Lawson of Charleston.

CASCILLA - MRS. ANNIE HALL NEWTON, age 96, widow of Lewis Mart Newton, died Sunday, Nov. 6, 1994, at the Tallahatchie General hospital. Rev Hilton Austin and Rev. Danny Jackson conducted services 3 p.m. Tuesday, Nov. 8, at the Womble Funeral Home Chapel. Mrs Donna Ross provided the sacred music. Interment was in Poplar Springs cemetery near Cascilla. born icon in Tallahatchie County, she was a member of Stonefield Church of God. She is survived by one daughter, Mrs. Lucille N. Staten of Cascilla, one grandson and two granddaughters.

TIPPO - JAMES LACY ALLISON, 73, farmer, died Thursday, Nov. 3, 1994, at the Baptist Memorial Hospital in Memphis after a stroke. Services were 2 p.m. Sunday, Nov. 6, at Tippo United Methodist Church, where he was a member, with burial in the Tippo cemetery. Newsom Funeral Home had charge. He was an Air Force veteran. The husband of Geneva Bush Allison, he also leaves a daughter, Elsie Ann Johnson of Cleveland, Tenn.; a son, James Kenneth Allison; and a sister, Minnie Clare Murphy, both of Tippo, two grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.

ENID - MARY ELIZABETH STOKES, 61, homemaker, died Sunday, Nov. 6, 1994, of cancer at South Panola Community Hospital in Batesville.Services were held at 2 p.m. Tuesday, Nov. 8, at Newsom Funeral Home in Charleston with burial in Friendship Church of God cemetery there. She was a member of Friendship Baptist Church. She leaves two daughters, Mickey Lindley of Memphis and Norrell Hawkins of Clarksdale; two sons, Larry Stokes of Liberty, Texas, and Wesley Stokes of Highlands, Texas; her mother, Rosie Fillyaw of Courtland; a brother, Billy Thomas of Courtland; Eight grandchildren and a great-grandson.

CHARLESTON - PETER STARKS O'SHEA, 81, retired merchant, died Saturday, Nov. 12, 1994, of heart disease at Tallahatchie General Hospital. Mass was said at 11 a.m. Monday, Nov. 14, at St John's Catholic Church in Charleston, where he was a communicant, with burial in Charleston cemetery. Newsom Funeral Home had charge. Mr. O'Shea was a Army veteran. The widower of Alto Foard O'Shea and preceded in death by a son, Thomas Foard O'Shea, Mr O'Shea leaves two daughters, Sharon O'Shea of Great Falls, Va. and Elizabeth O'Shea of Terlingua, Texas; a son, Pete O'Shea of West Point, and two grandchildren. Pallbearers were William Miller, Jimmy Venable, Robbie Venable, Ray Rounsaville, Dave Rowland and David Sayle.

CHARLESTON - RUTH ELLINGTON GRAVES, 102, died Sunday, Nov. 13, 1994, at the Tallahatchie General Hospital. Rev. Gary Adams conducted funeral services at 1 p.m. Tuesday, Nov. 15, at the Charleston First Baptist Church, where she was a member. Mrs. Sandra Hardy, organist, provided the sacred music. Burial was in Charleston cemetery. Mrs Graves, born icon Oct. 2, 1892, in Sallis, Miss., was the daughter of the late Dewey and Phoebie Cook Ellington. She attended Mississippi State College for Women and taught school prior to her marriage to William Henry Graves, a railroad agent, who preceded her in death in 1955. They lived in Merigold for 25 years before moving to Charleston in 1946. Mrs. Graves was a charter member of the Magnolia Garden Club. She is survived by two daughters, Mrs. Charlotte Spotts of East Dennis, Mass., and Mrs. Phoebe Mitchum of Erin, Tenn.; a son, Jack Graves of Asheville, N.C.; 11 grandchildren and 14 great-grandchildren. Pallbearers were Thomas Cole, James Graves, John Graves, Mitch Mitchum, Lanny Spotts and Michael Spotts.
