Mr. Calvin R. Triplett, Sr.

BURIAL will be in the New Palestine cemetery, Picayune, Ms. under the direction of McDonald Funeral Home, Picayune, Ms.

The Rev. Dr. Bill Hardin will officiate at the service.

Calvin Triplett embraced life. Dedicated to serving others, he provided a role model and leadership skills to thousands of young men through coaching football. His legacy lives on in communities across the country, where those he taught carry on his commitment to service and honor. In 1942, Mr. Triplett graduated from Picayune Memorial High School and immediately enlisted in the Army. Just a few months later, he was thrust into the middle of World War II's European theater. Serving in the infantry, Mr. Triplett fought in many significant conflicts, most notably the Battle of the Bulge. Wounded three times, he was discharged in 1945 after receiving many honors, including the Bronze Star and the Purple Heart. Following the war, Mr. Triplett returned to the Gulf Coast to continue his education at Pearl River Junior College. Later, he graduated from the University of Southern Mississippi where he lettered in football and basketball. In 1955, he was given his first opportunity as a head football coach in Poplarville, Mississippi, and the result was the DeSoto Conference championship. One year later, he served as head coach of the McComb Tigers and led them to the Mississippi State Championship. In 1963, Coach Triplett left the Gulf Coast to take the head coaching job in Winter Haven, Florida. Taking over a team that went 1-9 the season prior, he completely reversed the Blue Devils' fortunes, going 9-1 and earning a berth in the Florida state playoffs. 5 years later, Coach Triplett sided with his assistant coaches in a dispute over their pay. His participation in a teachers' strike effectively ended his stint in Winter Haven. From there it was off to Fort Pierce where in 1970 he took a school in its first year of existence all the way to the state finals. Fort Pierce Central would go on to win the Florida State High School Championship the following year with a perfect 13-0 season. After another year in Fort Pierce, it was back to Winter Haven where 5 more years as head coach and athletic director brought a successful return to the playoffs. In1978 it was back home to Picayune, Mississippi, and back to being Mr. Triplett. He returned to his home town as Director of the Picayune Athletic Association; a position tinged with irony as his first paying job had been nearly 3 decades prior as a pin-setter in the PAA's bowling alley. But after just one year, his high school alma mater beckoned, and in 1979 Coach Triplett made his final sideline stop with the Picayune Maroon Tide. His return coincided with a return to greatness for the Tide, culminating with the 1986 Mississippi State Championship. Coach Triplett received numerous rewards during his 32 year coaching career. A lifetime record of 235-81-4 also brought 5 State Coach of the Year honors (3 in Florida and 2 in Mississippi). He also served as Head Coach for the All Star game in each state and in 1971 was nominated for National Coach of the Year. After retiring from coaching, the honors continued to come...and not just for his work on the football field. In 1987 he was inducted into the Coaches' wing of the Mississippi Sports Hall of Fame and later that same year was named Picayune's Citizen of the Year. Nearly a decade later, he was inducted in the Pearl River Community College Hall of Fame. Balance in his life came from his family, his community and his love of the outdoors. Married for 53 years, Coach Triplett was a Charter member of the Jaycees Club and loved fishing and hunting. But most rewarding was his lifelong career of working with young people. Calvin Triplett was a member of the First Baptist Church of Picayune.
