John Arthur Smith

November 29, 1942 - July 3, 2012

NATCHEZ - Graveside services for John Arthur Smith, 69, of Vidalia, who died Tuesday, July 3, 2012 at Riverland Medical Center in Ferriday, will be at 10:00 a.m. Monday, July 9, 2012 at Natchez City Cemetery with Rev. Michael Cowan officiating.

Burial will follow at Natchez City Cemetery under the direction of Laird Funeral Home.

Mr. Smith was born November 29, 1942 in Natchez, MS, the son of Henry Smith and Mazie Lee Dunham Smith. He was a member of the Bougere Baptist Church. He was preceded in death by his parents and a grandson, Joshua Shane Smith.

He is survived by his wife of 37 years, Jackie Smith; three sons, Robert Orcutt, Hunter Smith, and Journey Smith; two daughters, Tammy Orcutt Glass and husband, Troy, and Destiny Smith, all of Vidalia; three grandchildren, John Paul Morehead, Tiffany Morehead, and Katlyn Rose Smith Orcutt; and three brothers.

Pallbearers will be family and friends.

Mary Katherine Golden

(January 24, 1922 - April 12, 2012)

Natchez - Graveside services for Mary Katherine Golden, 90, of Woodville, who died Thursday, April 12, 2012 at Field Memorial Hospital in Centreville, will be at 10:00 a.m. Saturday, April 14, 2012 at Evergreen Cemetery with Rev. E. C. Case officiating. Burial will follow at Evergreen Cemetery in Woodville under the direction of Laird funeral home.

Mary Katherine Golden, one of the last quintessential southern ladies. Mrs. Golden was born January 24, 1922 in Woodville, MS, the daughter of John L. and Mary Lee Hays. She was known as a scholar, finishing at the top of her high school class and began her 50 year long career as a bookkeeper shortly after. Her tenacity for life sparkled through her sharp wit, and impeccable sense of style. She was not only known for her love of interior design, history, dance, and travel, but also her charitable heart. Mrs. Golden was a lifelong member of the Woodville United Methodist Church, and also served with numerous civic organizations during her lifetime.

Mrs. Golden was preceded in death by her beloved husband, G. C. Golden, her sister, Rosa Roberts, and her brothers, William L. “Billy” Hays and James T. “Jimmy” Hays.

She is survived by one brother, John L. Hays of Baker, LA; one niece, Kathy Novonty of Starkville, MS; and four nephews, Lee Roberts of Harvey, LA, Greg Hays of Baker, LA, Brent Hays of Erie, PA, and Tommy Hays of Pride, LA.

Pallbearers will be her nephews and great nephew, Jay Stephens.

In lieu of flowers, charitable donations can be made in her memory to Catholic Charities, 109 South Union St., Natchez, MS 39120.

CLARKSDALE - Calvin Lee Hawkins, 80, retired employee of F&W Express, died of heart disease Saturday at Northwest Mississippi Regional Medical Center. Graveside services will be at 2 p.m. Monday in Longtown Cemetery. National Funeral Home has charge. He was a World War II Army veteran and a member of Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 3936. Mr. Hawkins, the husband of Hazel Hawkins, also leaves two daughters, Barbara Henderson of Crenshaw and Sandra Bryant of Batesville; two sons, Tommy Hawkins of Greenwood and Roger Hawins of Batesville, and six grandchildren.

CRAWFORD - Merle Goodson Buchanan, 76, retired dietitian, died of heart failure Friday at Baptist Memorial Hospital-Golden Triangle in Columbus. Services will be at 2 p.m. today at Crawford United Methodist Church, where she was a member, with burial in Oak Limb Cemetery. Memorial Funeral Home in Columbus has charge. Mrs. Buchanan, the wife of Hubert Buchanan, also leaves four daughters, Betty Brownie of Columbus, Shirley Taylor of Caledonia, Brenda Gentry of Crawford and Sissy Permenter of Macon; three sons, Hubert W. Buchanan of Caledonia, and Doug Buchanan and Jerry Buchanan, both of Crawford, 16 grandchildren and 14 great-grandchildren. The family requests that memorials be sent to Crawford United Methodist Church.

CRENSHAW - Shelia Dianne Bradley Brown, 50, licensed practical nurse, died Saturday at Baptist Memorial Hospital-North Mississippi in Oxford after a stroke. Services will be at 2 p.m. Monday at Crenshaw United Methodist Church, where she was a member, with burial in Longtown Cemetery. C. O. Pate Funeral Home has charge. Mrs. Brown, the wife of Darrel Brown, also leaves a daughter, Misty Long of Crenshaw; a son, Jeff Perkins of Sardis; her parents, Alberta and J. C. Bradley of Crenshaw; a sister, Debbie McNail of Senatobia, and five grandchildren. The family requests that memorials be sent to Crenshaw United Methodist Church.

GREENVILLE - Joe Edward Cox, 71, salesman, died of heart failure Friday at Delta Regional Medical Center. Services will be at 3 p.m. today at Boone-Wells Funeral Home with burial in Lakeview Gardens. Mr. Cox, the husband of Hilda Anderson Cox, also leaves a daughter, Janet R. Cox of Greenville; four sons, Joseph Allen Cox, Terrell Cox and Timothy David Cox, all of Greenville, and Michael Terry Cox of Hattiesburg; a brother, Thomas Cox of Hopewell, Va., and five grandchildren.

INDIANOLA - Robert C. Vowell, 61, cotton gin operator, died of cancer Friday at South Sunflower County Hospital. Services will be at 2 p.m. Monday at Card Funeral Home with burial in Indianola City Cemetery. He leaves a daughter, Viola Mae Vowell of Arizona; two sisters, Freddie Carpenter of Indianola and Waudean Gordon of Paragould, Ark., and a brother, Vineyard Vowell of Arizona.

IUKA - Annie Elizabeth Simpson, 78, died of heart failure Friday at Tishomingo Manor Nursing Home. Alician and Rose Funeral Home in Covington, Ky., has charge. Ludlam Funeral Home has local charge. She leaves two daughters, Mary Minnix of Iuka and Judy Irene Simis of Milford, Ohio; a son, Carl Wayne Simpson of Independence, Ky.; a brother, Oscar McDaowell of Latonia, Ky., seven grandchildren and four great-grandchildren.

KOSCIUSKO - Dorothy Fowler, 65, died of heart failure Friday at Oktibbeha County Hospital in Starkville. Graveside services will be at 10 a.m. Tuesday in Doty Springs Cemetery. Holly Springs Funeral Home has charge. She was a Baptist. She leaves her mother, Lillie O'Briant of Kosciusko; a sister, Helen F. Bradford of Troy, Ohio, and four brothers, Charles Fowler of Oxford, Wilburn Fowler Jr. of Memphis, Clarence Fowler of Rosedale and Johnny Fowler of Kosciusko.

NEW ALBANY - Jim G. `Big Jim' Thompson, 80, retired farmer, auctioneer and policeman, died of heart failure Friday at Baptist Memorial Hospital-Union County. Services will be at 2 p.m. today at United Funeral Service with burial in Flat Rock Cemetery in Benton County. He was a member and former song leader at Flat Rock Baptist Church. Mr. Thompson, the husband of Celia Gurneal Brock Thompson, also leaves five daughters, Charlene Floyd and Pat Love, both of New Albany, Brenda Smith of Waterford, Gail Hamblin of Ecru and Tammy Moore of Baldwyn; three sons, Robert Thompson, David Thompson and Bobby Thompson, all of New Albany, 17 grandchildren and 17 great-grandchildren.

OXFORD - Zelma Pearl Voyles McCluskey, 90, homemaker, died of heart failure Friday at Graceland Care Center. Services will be at 2 p.m. today at Waller Funeral Home with burial in Oak Hill Cemetery in Water Valley. She was a member of Jefferson (Miss.) Baptist Church. Mrs. McCluskey, the widow of Roy Vernon McCluskey, leaves two daughters, Gladys McCullar of Archibald, La., and Evelyn Cook of Water Valley; four sons, Herman McCluskey of Monette, Ark., Herschel McCluskey of Oxford, Billy McCluskey of Greenville and Jerry McCluskey of Jackson; two sisters, Lorena Gray of Counce, Tenn., and Lois McCluskey of Senatobia; a brother, Olen Voyles of Rienzi, 20 grandchildren, 35 great-grandchildren and four great-great-grandchildren.

THYATIRA - Raymond Earl Boren, 78, retired paint supervisor for Chromcraft Inc. in Senatobia, died of respiratory arrest Saturday at Baptist Memorial Hospital-DeSoto in Southaven. Services will be at 11 a.m. Tuesday at C. O. Pate Funeral Home in Senatobia with burial in Thyatira Cemetery. He was a World War II Air Force veteran. Mr. Boren, the husband of Betty Boren, also leaves a daughter, Callie Joe Wakefield of Charleston, S.C.; a son, Bill Lynn Boren of Olive Branch; two sisters, Betty Jean Crable of Ballwin, Mo., and Florence Boyd of Florissant, Mo.; two brothers, George Boren of Ironton, Mo., and Bob Boren of St. James, Mo., six grandchildren and a great-grandchild. The family requests that memorials be sent to the American Heart Association.
