Ames

GREENVILLE — Funeral services for Abie "Boogaloo" Ames, 83, of Greenville will be Saturday at 1 p.m. at the Jake and Freda Stein Hall of E.E. Bass Cultural Arts Center, Greenville. He died Feb. 4, 2002, at Delta Regional Medical Center, Greenville. A graveside service will follow in Lakewood Cemetery under the direction of Harris, Brown & Marion Funeral Home, Greenville.

Mr. Ames was a celebrated jazz and blues pianist and vocalist who had lived in the Delta since the mid-1960s. He was the son of the late Abe and Mary Amos.

He is survived by his brother, Harold Amos of Ellenwood, Ga.; a sister, Louise Amos Vernon of Detroit; two nieces, Gloria Jones and Althea Amos, both of Ellenwood, Ga.; and five nephews, Bernard Vernon, Leonard Vernon, Joseph Vernon, Glenard Vernon and Maynard Vernon, all of Detroit. He is also survived by his friend and companion, Amy Hartfield; and a host of nieces and nephews.

The remains will lie in state at E.E. Bass Cultural Arts Center on Saturday from noon to 1 p.m.

Brooks

INDIANOLA — Funeral services for Jessie Brooks, 66, of Indianola and formerly of Detroit will be Saturday at 1 p.m. at Friendship MB Church, Indianola. He died Feb. 1, 2002, at his home. Burial will be in Riverside Memorial Garden, Indianola, under the direction of Byas Funeral Home, Indianola.

He is survived by a special cousin, Henrietta Austin of Indianola; six nieces; and five nephews.

Visitation will be today from 2 to 6 p.m. at Byas Funeral Home, Indianola.

The Rev. C.W. Ray will officiate.

Carter

RULEVILLE — Funeral services for Velma Taylor Carter, 79, of Ruleville will be Saturday at 11 a.m. at New Hope Shilo Church, Ruleville. She died Jan. 31, 2002, at Northwest Regional Medical Center, Clarksdale. Burial will be in Pilgrim Rest Church Cemetery, Ruleville, under the direction of Byas Funeral Home, Ruleville.

Survivors include one son, Milton Taylor of Los Angeles; one daughter, Savanah Taylor of Los Angeles; two brothers, Louse Clark of Chicago and Peter Williams of Memphis; one sister, Ema King of Chicago; and seven grandchildren.

Visitation will be today from 2 to 6 p.m. at Byas Funeral Home, Ruleville.

Elder John Taylor will officiate.

Holmes

GREENVILLE — Funeral services for Josie Lee "Joyce" Holmes, 62, of Greenville will be Saturday at 2:30 p.m. at J.L. Featherstone Convention Center (Progressive Baptist), Greenville. She died Feb. 5, 2002, at her home. Burial will be in Delta Memorial Gardens, Greenville, under the direction of Redmon Funeral Home, Greenville.

Survivors include one daughter, Brenda K. Holmes of Greenville; three sons, Walter (Delores) Holmes, Kevin Holmes and Michael Holmes, all of Greenville; four sisters, Charlestine (Charles) Cox and Ida (the Rev. James) Byrd, both of Greenville, Joann Irvin of Bellwood, Ill., and Alberta Tyson of Saginaw, Mich.; four brothers, Howard McKnight of Tampa, Fla., Edward (Velma) McKnight of San Diego and Raymond Tyson and Jeff Tyson, both of Saginaw, Mich.; seven grandchildren, Tanya Parish, LaTeki Johnson, Benarda Holmes, Kendell Moore, Kinicha Johnson, Walter Holmes Jr. and Shameka Holmes, all of Greenville; one special aunt, Corean White McGlothline of Saginaw, Mich.; one special cousin, Rose White-Chandler of Saginaw, Mich.; three stepsisters, Barbara Stamp, Mary Lois McKnight and Earlene McKnight; one stepbrother, Frank McKnight Jr.; three special friends, the Rev. Carolyn Hudson, Daisy Green and Mary Hawkins, all of Greenville; and numerous nieces, nephews, aunts, uncles, cousins and friends.

Visitation will be today from 1 to 5 p.m. at Redmon Funeral Home chapel, Greenville. The remains will lie in state at the church Saturday from 1:30 to 2:30 p.m.

The Rev. Wesley Williams will officiate.

Johnson

INDIANOLA — Funeral arrangements for Adryanna Johnson, 9, of Indianola are pending at Byas Funeral Home, Indianola. He died Feb. 6, 2002, at her home.

Mosley

INDIANOLA — Funeral services for Elizabeth Mosley, 58, of Flint, Mich., and formerly of Indianola will be Sunday at 1:30 p.m. at Bethlehem No. 2 MB Church, Indianola. She died Jan. 31, 2002, in Flint, Mich. Burial will be in Bethlehem No. 2 MB Church Cemetery under the direction of Byas Funeral Home, Indianola.

Survivors include her mother, Ethel M. Hunter; three daughters, Bobbie Mosley, Shirley Mosley and Tracey Mosley, all of Flint, Mich.; two sisters, Emma McClinton and Earnestine Hunter; two brothers, James Mosley and Walter Mosley; six nephews; and four grandchildren.

Visitation will be Saturday from 2 to 6 p.m. at Byas Funeral Home, Indianola.

The Rev. Glenn Donald will officiate.

Powell

ISOLA — Funeral services for Savannah Powell, 80, of Isola will be Friday at noon at New Beginning Church of God, Isola. She died of heart failure Feb. 3, 2002, at Greenwood Leflore Hospital, Greenwood. Burial will be in Pilgrim Rest Cemetery, Isola, under the direction of Smith Funeral Home, Belzoni.

Survivors include three sons, Joe Louis Powell of Racine, Wis., and W.D. Powell and Dimp Powell, both of Isola; five daughters, Rosie Long, Mary Alice Woods and Joanna Johnson, all of Racine, Wis., Bernice Powell of Chicago and Alberta Loftin of Linden, Ala.; one brother, Claude Rayford of Newton; and two sisters, Elnora Harris of Isola and Roberta Redmond of Racine, Wis.

The Rev. Johnny Dodd will officiate.

Richards

GREENVILLE — Funeral services for Annie N. Dobbins Richards, 89 of Greenville will be Sunday at 2:30 p.m. at Greater Hinds Street MB Church, Greenville. She died Feb. 6, 2002, at the home of her daughter. Burial will be in Mt. Calvary Church Cemetery, Greenville, under the direction of Redmon Funeral Home, Greenville.

Survivors include three daughters, Rosie Richards Wright of Greenville, Annie R. (Willie) Webster of Grand Rapids, Mich., and Tommie Odessa Brunson of Providence, R.I.; two sons, Toney (Louise) Richards Jr. and John H. (Ilean) Richards, both of Greenville; 20 grandchildren, including four whom she raised, Monica (Vincent) Tompkins of Cleveland, Daryl D. (Pam) Richards and Aldo (Joann) Johnson, both of Greenville, and John Fredrick (Peggy) Richards of Providence, R.I.; 36 grandchildren; one sister, Florean Humphery of Port Gibson; one brother, Earl Dobbins of St. Louis, Mo.; three sisters-in-law; and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins and friends.

Visitation will be Saturday from 1 to 5 p.m. at Redmon Funeral Home chapel, Greenville.

Pastor Thomas Morris Sr. will officiate.

Smith

SHAW — Funeral services for Charles "Moonie" Smith, 41, of Shaw will be Sunday at 2:30 p.m. at Bethlehem No. 1 MB Church, Porter Bayou. He died Feb. 3, 2002, at Bolivar Medical Center, Cleveland. Burial will be in Bethlehem No. 1 MB Church Cemetery under the direction of Frye Funeral Home, Leland.

He leaves to cherish his memory his parents, Willie B. Smith and Franklin McConnell of Shaw; a loving friend, Naomi Appleton of Shaw; three sons, Charles Appleton, Julius Appleton and Dimitri Appleton, all of Shaw; one daughter, Cassandra Appleton of Shaw; seven sisters, Gloria Jean (Nathaniel) McConnell, Bobbie Jean (Roosevelt) Johnson and Jannie Smith, all of Shaw, Sarah (Charles) Goodlow of Chicago, Betty R. (Lee) Bass of Maywood, Ill., Debra McConnell of East St. Louis, Ill., and Kizzy McConnell of Camden, N.C.; six brothers, Matthew (Shirley) Smith Jr. of Shaw, Larry T. Smith of Cleveland, Frank (Constance) Smith of Chicago, James McConnell of Drew, and Bobby Moore and Franklin (Sharon) McConnell Jr., both of East St. Louis; and several other relatives and friends.

Turner

INDIANOLA — Funeral services for John Lee Turner, 48, of Indianola will be Saturday at 1 p.m. at Shady Grove MB Church, Inverness. He died Feb. 1, 2002, at South Sunflower County Hospital, Indianola. Burial will be in Riverside Memorial Garden, Indianola, under the direction of Byas Funeral Home, Indianola.

Survivors include his wife, Shirley Turner of Indianola; one son, Markettice Turner of Indianola; one daughter, Arnithia Elmore of Indianola; two brothers, Odell Turner Jr. and Robert Turner, both of Indianola; three sisters, Shirley Moffett, Luella Washington and Barbara Campbell, all of Indianola; and three grandchildren.

Visitation will be today from 2 to 6 p.m. at Byas Funeral Home, Indianola.

The Rev. Jimmy Barnett will officiate.

Bass

GREENVILLE — Funeral services for Jonathan DaRell "Jon-B" Bass, 19, of Greenville will be Saturday at 11 a.m. at Kindling Star MB Church, Greenville. He died from a gunshot wound Oct. 11, 2002, at Delta Regional Medical Center, Greenville. Burial will be in Delta Memorial Gardens, Greenville, under the direction of Redmon Funeral Home, Greenville.

He was born Sept. 2, 1983, in Greenville. He graduated from the National Guard Youth Challenge Program at Camp Shelby, Miss. He was currently attending Mississippi Delta Community College. He was preceded in death by his father, Melvin Bass Sr.; grandfathers J.D. Harvey and Nelson Bass; and one sister, Jacqueline Gibson-Jones.

He leaves to mourn his passing his mother and father, Carrie and Charles McGinnis of Greenville; his grandmothers, Mattie Harvey of Greenville and Marie Bass of Cleveland; his great-grandmother, Beatrice Hughes of Greenville; his grandfathers, Joseph (Sarah) Palmer and B.S. Ephriam, both of Greenville; two sisters, Danielle McGinnis of Greenville and Yumeka Gibson of Dallas; four brothers, Melvin Bass Jr. of Greenville, Willie Dell Alexander and Charles Wayne Bass, both of Cleveland, and Cordell Bass of Phoenix; one niece, Keya Gibson of Dallas; one nephew, Darius Gibson of Dallas; one play sister, Johntiea' Alexander of Greenville; a special friend and mentor, Sgt. Bobby Johnson; nine aunts; seven uncles; and a host of other relatives and friends.

Visitation will be Friday from 1 to 5 p.m. at Redmon Funeral Home chapel, Greenville.

The Rev. Warnell Smith is pastor of the church. The Rev. Roosevelt Johnson will officiate.

Buckner

WINTERVILLE — Funeral services for Mary Geneva Johnson Buckner, 88, of Winterville will be Saturday at 11 a.m. at Mt. Olive MB Church, Winterville. She died Oct. 10, 2002, at her home. Burial will be in Buckner-Marshall Cemetery, Winterville, under the direction of Redmon Funeral Home, Greenville.

Mrs. Mary Geneva Johnson Buckner was born Jan. 16, 1914, to the union of the late Mr. and Mrs. Wallace Johnson Sr. Mother Geneva confessed a hope in Christ at an early age under the leadership of the late Rev. Reason Buckner Sr. at Mt. Olive Baptist Church in Winterville. For over 75 years, she was an active member in every area of the church. She served on the mothers board for many years. Mother Buckner was the oldest living member and the last of the founding members of Mt. Olive Baptist Church. She was a loving mother, mother-in-law, grandmother, great-grandmother, great-great-grandmother and friend. She was preceded in death by her husband, Reason Buckner Jr.; two sons, the Rev. Thomas Buckner Sr. and Johnnie Buckner Sr.; and one brother, Wallace Johnson Jr.

Her memories will be cherished by five sons, Jerome R. (Jeanette) Buckner of Lake Village, Ark., Cornell (Carrie) Buckner of Memphis, Rudolph (Georgia) Buckner and Adolph (Bernadine) Buckner, both of Greenville, and Randle (Shirley) Bucker of Little Rock, Ark.; four daughters, Carrie (Walter) Denson and Charity Rayborn, both of Memphis, Betty Cowden of Chicago and Verdina Bucker of Greenville; one daughter-in-law, Beatrice Buckner of Memphis; one adopted son, the Rev. Ambrose (Mattie) Carr of Greenville; one sister, Odelia Smith of Benton Harbor, Mich.; one uncle, Arthur Johnson of Memphis; a host of grandchildren, great-grandchildren and great-great-grandchildren, nieces, nephews, cousins and friends; and her loving caregivers, Ornell Phillips of Greenville and Janice Piggs of Glen Allan.

Visitation will be Friday from 1 to 5 p.m., with family hour from 6 to 7 p.m., at Redmon Funeral Home chapel, Greenville. The remains will lie in state at the church Saturday from 10 to 11 a.m.

Pastor Tracey Cusic will officiate.
