William R. Bolenbaugh
William R. Bolenbaugh, 78, of Billings, died Monday, Feb. 15, 1999, at St. John's Lutheran Home. The son of Carl and Clara Bolenbaugh, he was born Aug. 18, 1920, in Madison, S. D. He married Mary Lee Williamson in Howard, S. D., on Jan. 26, 1946. She preceded him in death Oct. 17, 1992. When Dad first saw Mom, she was a 14 year old school girl, but he knew right then that he wanted to marry her. Six years later, he did. He always said that the reason he was able to talk her into it was because he was the only guy in town not wearing cowboy boots.
Mr. Bolenbaugh was a geologist and worked 12 years for Texaco from 1953 until 1965. He worked in Vietnam for three years before returning to Montana and starting his own consulting business.
He was a member of the American Association of Petroleum Geologists, Montana Geological Society, Billings Petroleum Club and the American Legion. An avid gardener, he especially enjoyed raising roses. He enjoyed golf, dancing, collecting rocks and arrowheads, and watching and feeding birds.
Survivors include two sons, Michael of Billings, and Craig Lee, Sr., "Skip" of Roundup, five grandchildren, Craig Lee, Jr., Brook T., Joe, Pete, and Jim, a brother Carl Bolenbaugh, Jr., of Agua Dulce, Calif., and two sisters Doris Hill of Agua Dulce, and Betty Williamson of Rapid City, S. D.
Cremation has taken place. Memorial services will be 1 p.m. Thursday at Michelotti, Sawyers and Nordquist Mortuary. Memorials may be made to Big Sky Hospice.

Gladys Edith Cherry
LAUREL - Gladys Edith Cherry, 91, went to be with her Lord, Sunday, Feb. 14, 1999, at her home in Laurel.
Gladys was born at Grove City, Kan., on Nov. 12, 1907. She was the oldest of eight children that were born to Edward and Edith Cook Loyd. The family moved to Springfield, Colo., when she was young and there she met and married Melvin P. Cherry on July 3, 1926. They had nine children with one dying in infancy. In 1951 most of the family moved to Lewistown and eventually settled in Laurel. Gladys was a nurses aid and worked at St. Vincent Hospital for many years.
Her husband Melvin preceded her in death on Aug. 18, 1992.
She is survived by daughters, Geraldine Miltenberger of Laurel, Edith Mae and Fred Zuniga of Brighton, Colo., Betty Ruth Gorges of Phoenix, Sylvia Jean Clauson of Laurel, and Frances and Ronald Reisdorph of Forsyth; sons, Raymond E, and Jackie Cherry of Summerville, S.C., Merle O. and Marianne Cherry of Laurel, and Donald Lee Cherry of Laurel; one sister, Iris Hutches of Vilas, Colo., and a brother Gene Loyd of Truth or Consequences, N.M. She had 36 grandchildren, 69 great-grandchildren and six great-great-grandchildren
Gladys was a wonderful mother and grandmother, because her family was her greatest joy and she kept up with the goings on with all of them. She will be greatly missed.
Services will be held 2 p.m. Thursday, Feb. 18, at Smith Funeral Chapel-Laurel. Interment will be in the Laurel cemetery.

Elsie Lee Conger
CASPER, Wyo. - Funeral services for Elsie Conger, 82, will be held at the Bustard's Funeral Home Wednesday Feb. 17, 1999 with Pastor Jen Segraves of the Church of Christ in Casper.
Elsie Conger died Feb. 13 at the Shepherd of the Valley Care Center after a long battle with cancer. Elsie loved to sew and bake. She made quilts, toys and Barbie doll dresses. She used to go to craft sales with her baked goods. She was a member of the Mountain Road Church of Christ.
She is survived by five daughters, Elsie Beatrice Hemmenway of Beaumont, Texas, Brownie Hill of Casper, Jeanette Smith of Cisco, Texas, Barbara Conger of Seattle, Melinda Yatcak of Myrtle Creek, Ore.; 22 grandchildren two of which are from Billings; Linnie (Conger) Drone of Crystal, Minn., and Barton Jack Conger of Crystal, Minn. Many great-grandchildren, several great-great-grandchildren; two brothers and one sister in Texas and one sister in California. Many nephews and nieces, long time friend Patricia Bowlsby of Garland, Texas, and many friends in several states.
She is preceded in death by her parents, several siblings, and sons Jack and Linnie Conger.
Memorials may be made out to the American Heart Foundation, Cancer fund or donor's choice.
The Bustard's Funeral Home in Casper is in charge of the arrangements.

Pat O. Currie
MILES CITY - Pat 0. Currie, age 69, of Miles City passed away Sunday, Feb. 14, 1999, at Holy Rosary Health Care Center.
Pat was born in Lee Vining, Calif., on Jan. 24, 1930, the son of Robert and Caroline (Taylor) Currie. He enlisted in the Navy upon graduation from high school in Bishop, Calif. He was a graduate of the University of Nevada, Reno and Utah State University.
On Sept. 15, 1951, Pat married Betty Cooper in Reno, Nev. He began his career as a range scientist for U.S. Forest Service at Fort Collins, Colo., moving to Miles City in 1978 as lead range scientist at Fort Keogh, retiring from that position in 1989. Since then, he managed a ranch and feedlot.
Pat enjoyed life and helping others to enjoy life and he will be remembered fondly by his family and friends.
Pat was a member and past president of the Miles City Club, Society for Range Management, Stockgrowers, and the Sage Riders.
Pat is survived by his wife, Betty of the family home; his daughter, Marcie Gross and her husband Wayne of Windsor, Colo.; sons: Sam Currie and his wife Cerni, and grandchildren, Brynn, Brandon, and Erin of Wilsonville, Ore.; Dan Currie and his wife Kathleen and granddaughter, Korissa of Locate; brothers; Sam Currie of Fallon, Nev., and Robert Currie of Bishop, Calif.; and sisters: Fern Denning of Reno, Nev., and Alice Cooper of Yerington, Nev. He was preceded in death by his parents.
Funeral services will be at 2 p.m. Thursday, Feb. 18, at the chapel of Stevenson and Sons Funeral Home in Miles City with Rev. Grover Briggs officiating. Interment will follow in the family lot in the Custer County cemetery. Stevenson and Sons Funeral Home is in charge of the arrangements.
Should friends desire, memorial may be made to the Custer County Art Center Foundation, Box 1284, Miles City, MT 59301; P.E.O Scholarship Fund, or to the charity of ones choice.

Eric James Destefano
Eric James Destefano passed away on Saturday, Feb. 13, 1999, at Memorial Hospital of Sheridan County at the age of 7.
Eric was born on Jan. 20, 1992, in Sheridan, Wyo., to Richard and Sue Buckley Destefano. He attended Meadowlark School where he enjoyed interacting with his friends. Spending time with his family at their mountain cabin was one of his favorite activities. He loved just sitting with his parents. He was a member of the Immanuel Lutheran Church.
Preceding Eric in death was his grandmother, Norma Pence.
Survivors include his parents; one brother, Brent; his grandparents, Alfred and Elsie Destefano and Tom and Annette Buckley; his great-grandmother, Helen Buckley all of Sheridan; his aunts and uncles, Ron and Cinder Destefano, Darold and Jennifer Destefano, Sandy Destefano, and Sam and Rosie Buckley; and his cousins, Zach Root, Alex Destefano, Samantha Buckley, Jason McGill, and Shandi McGill.
Visitation will be held from 6 to 8 p.m. on Wednesday, Feb. 17, 1999 at Kane Funeral Home. Funeral service will be held at 10 a.m. on Thursday, Feb. 18, 1999 at the Immanuel Lutheran Church with Pastor William Heine officiating. Kane Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements
Memorials for Eric may benefit the New Pediatric Ward of Memorial Hospital of Sheridan County or the Child Development Center in care of Delphine Toner, First Interstate Bank, P.O. Box 2007, Sheridan, Wyo. 82801.

Phyllis Irene Duran
Phyllis Duran (Neely) 65, formerly of Billings, died Saturday, Feb. 6, 1999 in Miami Beach, Fla., of natural causes. Phyllis was the daughter of Fernando Duran and Mary Louise Ontiveros. She graduated from Billings Senior High, Class of '52. After a three year stint in the U.S. Air Force, she received her nursing degree from Carroll College. She was private duty nursing at the time of her death.
Phyllis is survived by son Frank Neely of Winston-Salem, N.C., daughter Gina Neely of Miami, Fla., and four grandchildren. She is also survived by sisters Esther Rivera and Jessie Downey of Billings; brother Pete Duran of Las Vegas, Nev., aunt Florence Hinojos of Pico Rivera, Calif.; and numerous nieces, nephews, cousins and friends.
Phyllis (mom) we will miss you. You gave us much love, understanding and laughter when we needed it most. You leave us with many good memories of all that we have shared. Phyllis was a devoted mother, sister, and aunt, firm in her convictions regarding freedom through religion, family and education. As your family and friends, we are all much richer because of you.
Memorial services were held 10 a.m. Friday, Feb. 12, at St. Joseph Catholic Church, Miami Beach, Fla. Internment of ashes in Holy Cross cemetery in Billings will be held at a later date.

Helen V. Gordon
ROUNDUP - Helen V. Gordon, 71, died Monday, Feb. 15, 1999, at Roundup Memorial Hospital.
Visitation 5-9 p.m. Wednesday, Feb. 17, at Wier Funeral Chapel. Services at 1 p.m. Thursday, Feb. 18, at Chapel. Interment to follow at Roundup City cemetery.

Clyde L. Dugger
POWELL, Wyo. - Clyde Lowell Dugger, 75, died Tuesday, March 2, 1999, at the Powell Nursing Home.
Services will be at 2 p.m. Friday, March 5, at the First Baptist Church with interment in Crown Hill cemetery. Miratsky-Easton Funeral Home is in charge.

Rebecca Ann Frazier
Rebecca Ann Frazier, infant daughter of Charles R. and Jennifer M. Frazier, returned home to her heavenly Father in the Celestial Kingdom on March 3, 1999. Rebecca was born on Sept. 3, 1997, in Billings.
Her life here gave all those who came in contact with her much strength and love. Rebecca's short life had many obstacles but she learned to overcome and grow.
Rebecca is survived by her parents; her sister, Rachel; grandparents, Lili Johnson of Billings, Richard Frazier (Audrey) of Sarasota, Fla., Farrell (Donna) DeLapp of Deer Lodge, and Carole (Rick) McCollum of Paradise; great-grandparents, Lewis and Martha Frazier of Butte, and John and Pat Johnson of Fort Collins, Colo.; and great-great-grandmother, Geneva Kendall of Powell, Wyo. She is also survived by numerous aunts and uncles, including one special aunt, Cora Anne (Tim) Nelson of Billings.
Rebecca will be missed by all of those who knew her. Becca, we love you!
Funeral services will be Friday, March 5, at 2 p.m. at Avenue D Chapel of the LDS Church, 1711 Sixth St. W. Interment in Holy Cross cemetery. Memorials may be made to Messages for Miracles, c/o Brook Rye, 2050 Las Canoas Road, Santa Barbara, Calif. 93105. Dahl Funeral Chapel is in charge of arrangements.

Julia E. Homan
Julia E. Homan was born on July 18, 1927, and she passed away on Saturday, Feb. 27, 1999, at 6:05 p.m. Housewife, mother, grandmother, and best friend, she is loved and missed by her survivors: Carol Ann Boyer (daughter), Tom B. Boyer (son), and Ronald W. Boyer (son), and their families, grandkids, and other relatives.
Julia's nickname was Penny and everyone who met her loved her for her kindness towards them. Penny also loved to hunt, fish, and spend time with her kids outdoors. BYE FOR NOW MOM WE ALL LOVE YOU.

Stephen Hoversland
Stephen Carl Hoversland, beloved husband, father, son, brother and friend, was born May 6, 1953 to Ralph and LeeBeth Hoversland in Wolf Point. He attended the Victory rural and Wolf Point schools, graduating in 1971. He went to Billings Vo-Tech concentrating in mechanics and also to heavy equipment school in Texas.
He married Dianne Stensland in 1974 and they made their home in Billings. While in Billings, he worked for Tractor and Equipment which he enjoyed for 15 years before making the decision to move back to the family farm in 1989.
Steve enjoyed working with his children on their school work and 4-H projects. He was a 4-H leader, fire chief of the Volt volunteer fire department, member of the Wolf Point Elks Lodge, served on the Roosevelt County Fair Board and the Wolf Point Cenex Board.
His happiest times were spent bowling, fishing, hunting and camping with his family. He especially loved attending his children's activities, playing cards with family and friends, and laughing at a good joke. In addition to his love for his family, Steve enjoyed farm life and working with his cattle.
Steve left this world for a better place on Feb. 20, 1999, to be with his maker. Waiting for him at the end of this journey are his mother, LeeBeth, and his grandparents, Kelly and Clarice Schuchmann and Andreas and Marie Hoversland.
Steve will not only be missed by his family, but by all those that met him because he touched everyone in a special way. His family would like to thank him for being the most thoughtful, caring and loving husband, dad and brother in the world.
He is survived by his wife, Dianne, and children (Jennifer, David, Andrea and Kevin). Also his father Ralph, sisters Debbie (Warren Benedik, Melissa and Tyler), Linda, and Cindy (Doug Fernley), and brothers Scott (Janet, Rachel and Marcus) and Blaine (Jennifer), and Uncle John Hoversland.

Robert E. Mammen, MD
RENO, Nev. - Robert E. Mammen, MD, Captain, Medical Corps, U.S. Navy (retired), died early Friday, Feb. 26, from complications of ALS, commonly known as Lou Gehrig's disease. He was born in Billings on May 31, 1930, to Johannes and Clara (Helm) Mammen.
He graduated from Montana State University in Missoula where he met his wife, Edith M. Herbert. They married in 1954. He received his MD from the University of Oregon and then became a full-time Navy Medical Officer. He served aboard the USS ESSEX as senior medical officer and flight surgeon. He also served in several research assignments including the team that designed the life support systems for the Gemini Space Craft.
After retiring from the Navy in 1979, he relocated to Reno to head the Family Practice rotation at the University of Nevada-Reno Medical School. In 1984 he left the medical school to join Village Family Practice in Reno. He loved serving his patients until 1996 after he was diagnosed with ALS and retired.
He is preceded in death by his parents; his sisters, L. Louise Mammen, Margaret K. Mammen Miller; and his brother, Donald J. Mammen.
He is survived by his wife, Edith (Herbert) Mammen; his children, Robert S. Mammen, Steven K. Mammen, Kenneth W. Mammen and Laurie A Rockenbeck; and his grandchildren, Ryan Mammen, Rory Mammen, Kelsey Mammen, Emma Rockenbeck and Kyra Mammen. He is also survived by three nephews, a niece, and six great-nieces and nephews.
A memorial service was held March 3, 1999, at Ross, Burke and Knobel mortuary in Reno. A memorial fund is being established for ALS research in care of Muscular Dystrophy, 1280 Terminal Way, Reno, NV 89502. Condolences may be sent to the family at 15100 Broili Drive, Reno, NV 89511.

Margaret Lucy Nelson
TIGARD, Ore. - Margaret Lucy Nelson, 90, formerly of Billings, passed away Tuesday morning, March 2, 1999, in Tigard. She had been a resident of the King City Rehabilitation and Living Center since November of 1998.
Margaret was born on Dec. 6, 1908, in Alva, Okla., the daughter of Charles Jacob and Phila L. (Anderson) Wardell. She married Raymund E. Nelson Sr. and together they lived in Billings for 40 years. In 1988 Mrs. Nelson moved to Oregon to live near her family.
Survivors include her daughter, Betty Benner and husband, Glenn; her son, Raymund E. Nelson Jr. and wife, Michi, all of Tigard; five grandchildren and four great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her husband in 1979.
Graveside services will be held at 10 a.m. on Monday, March 8, at the Sunset Memorial Gardens in Billings. Smith Downtown Chapel is in charge of arrangements.

Rose Pestal
She was born at Trerbec, Czechoslovakia, on June 21, 1906, to Ana and Bolmslav Sommer. She was married to Joseph Pestal on July 30, 1938. Two years later she came to live in Billings where she spent the rest of her life.
She was very proud to have become a U.S. citizen on April 6, 1945. She worked for some time at the Nehi bottling plant and was part owner of P. & K. Drilling. During her lifetime she enjoyed reading, crocheting and especially gardening. She was very fond of birds and music from the "old country." Mr. Pestal preceded her in death on May 13, 1976. They had no children.
Funeral arrangements are being handled by Shirley Schuchard of the SunnyView Retirement Home, where Rose resided for several years before going to Western Manor Care Center, where she died of natural causes on Feb. 27, 1999.
Funeral service will be 2 p.m. Friday, March 5, at Smith's West Chapel, 304 34th St. W. Interment will follow at Sunset Memorial Gardens.
