Arnold A. Berger
Arnold A. Berger, 73, died Sunday at his home at 2745 Arlene St., after a long illness.
His wife, Janet, his son, Pierre, of Billings, and his daughter, Michelle (Mrs. Philipp Johner of Zurich, Switzerland) were at the bedside when death came one day after the Bergers marked their 50th wedding anniversary.
Mr. Berger had been in ill health for seven years following a series of strokes which forced his eventual and complete retirement from the practice of law.
He was born to Walter and Mary Berger in Gebo, Wyo., July 26, 1925. The family lived in Bearcreek before moving to Billings where he graduated from high school in 1943 and enrolled at the University of Montana from which he took his law degree in 1949. That same year he married the former Janet Beckstrom in Great Falls.
Returning to Billings Mr. Berger served as a deputy county attorney and was elected to two terms as Yellowstone county attorney. While early in his professional career he gained a degree of prominence in the practice of criminal law. Mr. Berger was perhaps best known for the drama and flair he brought to courtrooms as a trial lawyer.
He served one term as president of the Yellowstone County Bar Association. He was also a member of the Hilands Golf Club, the First Congregational Church and was a director of the First Citizens Bank on its founding in Billings.
Through much of his life Mr. Berger was active in the Masonic lodge. He was a member of Billings Lodge No. 113, AF&AM, and of Scottish Rite bodies. He was elected potentate of Al Bedoo Shrine in 1970 and was later named director of Billings Court 87 of the Royal Order of Jesters. He was also a member of the Al Bedoo Jam Band but his major contribution was seen in the nearly 40 years he served as musical director and conductor of Al Bedoo's world champion Oriental Band. Under his regime the band won repeated awards and honors, an achievement which resulted in the Billings group taking permanent possession of the international trophy and being "retired" from further active competition.
Mr. Berger's hobbies and avocations were many and varied. He liked to fish and was fond of saying he never found a card game he didn't enjoy playing - as long as it was either bridge or poker.
He also found relaxation on the water where his motor launch was a familiar sight on Yellowstone Lake. (The boat was named for his wife, Janet, his daughter, Michelle (or Mimi), and his son, Pierre, hence its christening as "Jamierre.")
In addition to Mr. Berger's immediate family, he is survived by two grandchildren, Christian and Daniella Grace and his son-in-law, Philipp, all living in Switzerland, and Mrs. Berger's mother, Ruth, who has made her home with the Bergers for the last year. A sister, Dorothy, died some years ago.
Smiths Funeral Chapels is in charge of arrangements and cremation has taken place. A service in celebration of Mr. Berger's life is planned at the Shrine Auditorium at 2 p.m. Saturday. Members of the family suggest that in lieu of flowers memorials may be made to Al Bedoo Shrine's Hospital Transportation Fund, P.O. Box 20673, Attn. Clint Frank, Billings, 59104.
