Elizabeth 'Isabelle' Limberhand Clawson
In the early morning hours of Sunday, May 23, 1999, God called home one of his special angels, Elizabeth "Isabelle" Limberhand Clawson, 46. She was born in Lame Deer on April 19, 1953, the daughter of Benjamin Limberhand and Cecilia Kinzel. She died of heart complications during dialysis at Deaconess Medical Center in Billings.
Elizabeth attended grade school in Lame Deer and in Thomas, Okla. She was a volunteer "Pink Lady" at St. Vincent's Hospital and Senior Helping Hands. She endeared herself to the elderly and children who loved her gentle and kind spirit. She loved to go to garage sales and "cruising around" Billings with her niece, Kelly, and her girls.
Throughout her life, Elizabeth was besieged with serious medical problems which required numerous surgeries and long-term medical treatment. In 1994, Elizabeth lost her eyesight due to complications from diabetes. These medical problems did not slow her down nor did she indulge in self-pity. She was thankful for each day and lived life to the fullest. She was a deeply religious person who placed her faith and trust in God to guide and direct her life. She traveled extensively with pastors Rhea Goes Ahead and Carol Red Cherries, preaching the word of God at revivals throughout Indian country in the late 1980s.
In 1994, she met and fell in love with her soul-mate and companion, James Clawson, whom she met at the monthly meetings for the blind. They were married on May 17, 1996, in Hardin. This was truly a match made in Heaven. Jim truly enriched and made her last years a joy and full of happiness. Together, with their seeing-eye dog, Jiggs, they were a familiar site in Billings riding the MET buses to shop, visit friends and go to medical appointments. These two individuals did not view their blindness as a handicap and truly believed that together they could achieve any goal they set.
Elizabeth is survived by the love of her life and husband, James of Billings; her mother, Cecilia Medicine Elk of Lame Deer; brothers, Dennis (Marla) Limberhand of Laurel, Chester (Trisha) Limberhand of Billings, Maynard (Ursula) Limberhand of Rocky Boy, Grover Whiteman of Laurel and Gary Lightning of Billings; sisters, Rosalie Tall Bull of Denver, Joyce Knows His Gun of Albuquerque, N.M., Doris Beaumont of Pryor and Rennie Whiteman of Lame Deer. She is also survived by two special sisters-in-law, Lynda and Leona Limberhand. She is also survived by adopted mother, Jolene Gardner; best friends, Carol Red Cherries, Regina, Charlotte and Anita Whiteman, Geneva and Joanne; special aunts who loved her dearly, Helen Hiwalker, Rose Rapos and Cyrilla American Horse, and uncle, Oscar Kinzel, all of Lame Deer.
Elizabeth loved to "keep in touch" by calling all her friends and family daily. She took special interest in each of their successes and failures and always had words of encouragement when someone was feeling down. In reflecting on her life, everyone agrees that she never had a bad word to say about anyone. She taught us all a valuable lesson in life to always find the best in people, to pass lightly over each others' faults and not to speak of past regrets or wrongs.
Elizabeth's greatest joy in life was spending time with her 56 nieces and nephews, who she considered her children. She made each feel special and loved. At family gatherings, they were always crowded around "Auntie Belle-Belle, " as she was affectionately known, waiting on her, sharing hugs, sitting on her lap, hearing threats of a spanking for not listening to their parents or their wives (she didn't care if they were 30 years old) and laughing hysterically over a shared joke. These moments were the most beautiful sights and will be cherished forever by all of her family. She loved to tease her brothers-in-law and her nieces' husbands.
" "Belle-Belle, " it is so difficult to comprehend your sudden death. As we whispered our last goodbyes, we were so selfish in not wanting to let you go, yet, we know you will always be here with us. We know you are free from all pain and can see the beautiful sunrises that you missed. So, as we surround you with simple flowers - daises and red roses; your beloved nieces and nephews who adored you; your husband, Jim, who lit up your life with love and happiness; your mom, brothers and sisters who loved you dearly; and family and friends who cherished your friendship - we release you to those who are waiting in Heaven for you with open arms. Your father, Benjamin, Grandma Kinzel (who has her cards ready for a good game of TA Rummy), your brothers, Herman and Benny, sisters, Lillian and Germaine and nephews, Benjy and Rodney, Zachary and Jake. Go quietly and in peace, we know that you are one of the few who has a key to the Golden Gates of Heaven. We will never forget you and know the world is a better place because of you. We will love you always."
Funeral services are scheduled for Tuesday, May 25, at 1 p.m. at the Seventh Day Adventist Church at 3200 Broadwater Ave., Billings. A wake will be held at the Blessed Sacrament Church in Lame Deer on Tuesday evening at 8 p.m. Another funeral service will be held at the church at 11 a.m. on Wednesday, May 26. Internment at the Family cemetery five miles north of Lame Deer.

Harry Lee Cummings
Harry Lee Cummings passed away May 22, 1999, from complications of acute leukemia. Harry was born on Oct. 20, 1923, in Devils Lake, N.D., the eldest of four children of Frank Herbert Cummings and Clara Bye Cummings.
Harry served in the China Burma Indian Theatre during World War II with the 10th Weather Squadron, 10th Air Force. On Nov. 19, 1946, he married Margaret B. Barry of Pembina, N.D. They had two children, Elizabeth Lee Cummings and Frank Barry Cummings. Harry retired from the Federal Aviation Agency after working as an air traffic controller in numerous cities in the Midwest. He moved to Billings in 1970 and ran a small family business. He was a member of the Masonic Lodge of Cedar Falls, Iowa.
Survivors include Harry's wife, Margaret; daughter and son-in-law, Elizabeth Cummings Tooley and William Robert Tooley III of Billings; son and daughter-in-law, Frank B. Cummings and Amy Wagner of Bakersfield, Calif.; grandchildren, Christina Margaret Tooley, Michael Robert Tooley, Edward Flynn Cummings, John Barry Cummings and Harrison Wagner Cummings; sisters, Doris Erickson and Marie Boyer; and brother, James Cummings.
Harry grew up during the Great Depression, and never forgot the lessons of that era. He was an intelligent, honest and complex man, who faced many challenges in his life and eventually triumphed. He will be missed by those who loved him. The following was written in the obituary of Harry's great-grandfather, Reverend Steadman Cummings, on Oct. 19, 1883, and it rings true for Harry Lee Cummings as well, "The patience and resignation which he bore his troubles was remarkable; no murmur has been heard from his lips. Indeed, he was ready and waiting for the summons."
Cremation has taken place. Private family services are pending with internment in Memorial Park cemetery, Grand Forks, N.D.
Michelotti, Sawyers & Nordquist has charge of arrangements.
