Alvida Good
WHITEFISH - Alvida Good, 93, passed away May 17, 1999, at Colonial Manor in Whitefish, her home for the last eight months. Born on All Saint's Day, she would have appreciated knowing that with her 100 percent Norwegian ancestry and independent spirit she departed this earth on Norwegian Independence Day. She dearly loved the Flathead Valley, visiting with family in the area every summer while making her home in various locations throughout Montana and North Dakota.
She was horn in Wahpeton, N.D., on Nov. 1, 1905, to John and Randi Otness, who ran a sand and gravel business. The family, including her older brother Arnold, moved to eastern Montana to homestead near Sidney when Alvida was 5 years old. She was raised in a log cabin, spending her youth among the wildflowers and fields of this dryland farming operation.
In 1923 she graduated from Sidney High School and for the next year she worked on the farm until sufficient funds were raised to send her to Dakota Business School in Fargo. Following completion of the bookkeeping/banking program, she worked for five years at the First State Bank of Opheim, leaving that job to work as a bookkeeper in the Office of the Treasurer of Richland County in Sidney. Of particular note during this period was a long anticipated train trip she made to the 1933Chicago World's Fair.
On July 14, 1935, she married Lloyd Good, whose family also homesteaded in the Sidney and Lambert area. Lloyd had taken a job as a vocational agriculture instructor in the high school at Simms, where the couple resided for three years. He then took employment with the USDA, first with the Soil Conservation Service and later as a grasslands manager and regional director with the U.S. Forest Service. These jobs took them to Fargo, Mandan, Fessenden, New Rockford, Watford City and Dickinson in North Dakota, and to Billings.
During these years Alvida worked in her yard and garden, taking great pride in her roses and large vegetable garden, the products of which she generously shared with family and friends, canning and freezing fruits and vegetables which were enjoyed for many years.
Failing health forced a move to Kalispell in 1994, where she resided at Buffalo Hill Terrace until October of last year, when she moved to Colonial Manor to be near her son and family.
Alvida is survived by her son, Kenneth Good and his wife, Wanda of Whitefish, and her daughter, Nancy Leinius of Port Townsend, Wash. She enjoyed her grandchildren, Brad and Craig Good, Carrie Chisholm, and Mike and Brian Leinius, and four great-grandchildren, Hayley Alvida and Jack Chisholm, and Jenny and Erich Watry. Her parents, husband and brother preceded her in death.
Funeral services will be held at American Lutheran Church in Billings, at 2 p.m. Friday, May 21. Burial will be in Sunset Memorial Gardens. Michelotti, Sawyers & Nordquist Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements. Memorials may be sent to American Lutheran Church at 5 Lewis Ave. in Billings.
