Vern E. 'Bus' Woodward
Vernon E. "Bus" Woodward, of 725 N. 25th, Billings, died Sunday, June 20, 1999, at Billings Deaconess Hospital of complications from a stroke. He was 92 years old.
Bus was born on June 4, 1907, in Forsyth, the son of Bert F. Woodward and Nancy Belle (Anderson) Woodward. When he was 2 years old, his parents divorced and he moved to Laurel with his mom. His mom soon married J. J. McFadden. Bus grew up in Laurel and graduated from Laurel High School in 1924. He obtained the nickname "Buster" because his parents thought he looked like the comic strip character "Buster Brown." The name stuck and he was known to his close friends as Buster all of his life.
Following high school, Bus attended the University of Oklahoma for two years until the death of his stepfather. Following the death of his step-father, Bus returned to Montana to comfort and help support his mom. He always regretted not having finished his education and preached the love of learning and the necessity of an education to his children and grandchildren.
On Sept. 8, 1936, he married Margaret Webb of Big Timber. Together they had four children. The family lived in Greybull, Laurel, Missoula, and, finally Billings. He was proud to say that all of his children obtained college educations.
Bus is survived by his four children: Judy Feiden of Great Falls; Virginia Gross and her husband, Mike of Billings; Vern Woodward and his wife, Kathy of Billings; and Leslie Ridgeway and her husband, Rick of Sand Point, Idaho. He is also survived by his 12 grandchildren and 13 great-grandchildren. His parents and his wife preceded him in death.
Bus was a member of the American Legion, the Masonic Temple, and of the Scottish Rite. He prided himself on his unimpeachable honesty, his kindness to others, and on his unyielding loyalty to his friends and family. He counted being a "good father" as his greatest achievement.
Memorial services will be at the First English Lutheran Church on Thursday, June 24, at 9 a.m. In lieu of flowers, the family requests memorial donations to the Billings American Legion Baseball Program or to the Yellowstone Boys & Girls Ranch.
