Abel 'Spud' Hopkins Jr.
WHITEFISH - Abel "Spud" Hopkins Jr. was born Sept. 29, 1935, at Fort Belknap Agency. He was the son of Abel and Fola "Bigby" Hopkins Sr. "Spud" died at North Valley Hospital in Whitefish on Saturday, March 27, 1999, of a heart attack and complications from diabetes. One daughter, Andrea from Michigan; three sisters, Lillian "Cissie" Hopkins of Whitefish, Donna Blackeagle of Nashua and Penny Bercier of Great Falls, and one brother, Floyd Hopkins of Glasgow, survive him; as do numerous nephews, nieces and grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents, and four brothers, Douglas, Jimmy, Roland and Indian.
There will be a wake Wednesday, March 31, 1999, at the Red Whip Center in Fort Belknap, with services to be held at the Red Whip Center on Thursday, April 1, at 11 a.m., burial to follow at Pony Hill cemetery on the Fort Belknap Reservation, with a feed following the services.
Spud was a lifelong resident of Montana with the exception of time spent in military service during the Korean Conflict. He served three years in the army with one year spent in Korea.
Spud will be remember by all for his acts of kindness, gifts of love and his humor. He was a kind man with a big heart for children, family and life. Thank you for being there uncle, you will be missed and remembered.

Ingvold P. 'Bud' Jacobson
HAVRE - Ingvold P. "Bud" Jacobson, 79 years of age, a resident of Havre, died on Saturday, March 27, 1999, at a Havre care center of natural causes. Memorial services will be held at 2 p.m. on Thursday, April 1, 1999, at the Messiah Lutheran Church in Havre. Burial of the ashes will be at the Highland cemetery with military graveside honors. Memorials in Mr. Jacobson's honor may be made to the Messiah Lutheran Church, Northern Montana Care Center or to a donor's choice. Holland & Bonine Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.
Bud was born on July 24, 1919, in Wolford, N.D., the son of Bertin Nels and Mary (Opperud) Jacobson. He attended schools in Wolford and graduated from the Wolford High School. He was a U.S. Army Veteran of WWII. On Nov. 25, 1943, at Menominee, Mich., he married the former Myrtle Pearson. The couple moved to Montana and Bud worked with Simpson Drilling Company. The couple later moved to Hobson where Bud owned and operated the Hobson Equipment Company. He later started the Jacobson Drilling Company in Havre. He was a life member of the Montana Water Well Drilling Association, a member of the Messiah Lutheran Church, and a former member of the Judith Basin Masonic Lodge, No. 83 A.F. & A.M., the Hobson Order of Eastern Star and the Eagles Club of Lewistown.
He was preceded in death by his parents; two brothers, Jacob and Gerhard "Gay"; two sisters, Evangeline "Vangie" Staff and Evelyn Lipp.
He is survived by his wife, Myrtle of Havre; daughter, Delaine and her husband, Murray Barkus of Havre; daughter, Connie and her husband, Jerry Ridgeway of Billings; son, Robert and his wife, Teri Jacobson of Havre; sister, Alpha Bowersox of Rugby, N.D.; sister, Beulah Dungan of Menominee; sister, Luella Thomas of Boulder, Colo.; sister, Helyn and husband, Robert Simpson of Olympia, Wash.; sister, Norma Long of Rugby; 11 grandchildren, one great-granddaughter; numerous nieces and nephews.

Lana H. Larson
Lana H. Larson, 52, of Billings passed away Sunday morning, March 28, 1999, at Eagle Cliff Manor following an extended illness.
A graveside memorial service will be held at 10 a.m. on Thursday, April 1, at Sunset Memorial Gardens. Cremation has taken place. Memorials: Billings Saddle Club Youth Group; Box 385; Billings, MT 59103. Smith Downtown Chapel is in charge of arrangements.

Rose Maltese
SIDNEY - Rose Maltese, 92, died Sunday, March 28, 1999, at the Sidney Health Center-Extended Care Facility.
Wake service will be at 6:30 p.m. Tuesday, March 30, at the Fulkerson Memorial Chapel. Mass of Christian Burial will be at 10 a.m. Wednesday, March 31, at St. Matthew's Catholic Church with interment in the Sidney cemetery.

Kathryn E. Miller
Kathryn E. Miller, age 93, of Billings died Sunday, March 28, 1999. She was born May 13, 1905, at Brookfield, Mich., the daughter of George and Lydia (Striffler) Zinnecker. At an early age she moved with her family to Eastern Montana. On May 19, 1923, she married Harry L. Miller in Jordan, Mont. They later moved to Billings.
Survivors include three sons, Bob D. and wife Florence of Billings; Joe of Shepherd and Don of Billings; two daughters, Dorothy J. and husband Cork Mortensen of Helena, and Evelyn J. Miller of Stillman Valley, Ill.; 15 grandchildren and 17 great-grandchildren.
Kathryn was preceded in death by her husband in 1992, son Jack, daughter Phyllis K. Standley, three brothers and two sisters.
Private graveside services will be held at Sunset Memorial Gardens. Smith's Downtown Chapel in charge of arrangements.

Robert G. Phelps
Robert G. Phelps, 74, of Billings died at his home of natural causes on March 29, 1999. Cremation has taken place. Memorial service will be 1 p.m. Friday at Cremation or Funeral Gallery, 114 Florine Lane. Memorials may be made to charity of choice.
He was born in Griggs County, N.D., a son of William and Bernice Haley Phelps. Mr. Phelps graduated from high school in Cooperstown, N.D., and came to Montana in 1956. He married Gertrude M. Prescott in Cooperstown on June 14, 1945, and had worked as an insurance salesman for various companies.
Survivors include his wife, Gertrude; one son, Michael (Diane) Phelps of Billings; and a daughter, Michelle (Melvin) Hoferer of Silesia; seven grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren. He has been preceded in death by his parents; one son, Robert G. Phelps Jr.; one brother and one sister.

Everett Neilsen Renner
MEETEETSE, Wyo. - Everett Neilsen Renner, 79, died Sunday, March 28, 1999, at West Park Long Term Care Center in Cody.
Graveside services will be at 10:30 a.m. Wednesday, March 31, at Meeteetse cemetery.

Glenwood Franklin Russell
ROUNDUP - Glenwood F. Russell, 85, passed away March 27, 1999, at Roundup Memorial Hospital. He was born April 23, 1913, in Freeland, Pa., the son of Julia Ann Bottoms-Russell and John Russell. On Feb. 17, 1934, Glenwood married Hazel A. Herring in Freeland. They had three sons, Glenwood J., William D., and Jackie Russell. He retired from Alanwood Steel Co., was a lifetime member of the Pocono Beagle Club, and also a member of the Zion Lutheran Church. He loved fishing, hunting and raising his beagles.
He is preceded in death by his parents; brothers, William, James, John, Harry, Chester; and sisters, Susan, Emma L. and Margaret R.; and son, Jackie.
He is survived by his wife, Hazel A. Russell of Roundup; his sons, Glenwood J. and wife, Mary A. Russell of Roundup and William D. and wife, Betty Russell of Whitehall, Pa.; grandsons, Todd D. and wife, Juanita, Glenwood F. and wife, Pam, Travis and wife, Roxy of Roundup, Scott J. and wife, Tami of Dallas, Ore., Vincent J., Jeffry M. and William D. Russell, all of Pennsylvania. Granddaughters are Tracey A. VanDeKop and husband, Roger of Roundup, Arleen E. Greenman and husband, Art, Tammy A., Kimberly S. and Beth A. Russell, all of Pennsylvania. He has numerous great-grandchildren and two great-great-grandsons living in Germany.
He will be greatly missed by all family and friends.
Visitation is Tuesday, March 30, 1999, from 5-9 p.m. at the Wier Funeral Chapel. Funeral Services are 11 a.m. Wednesday, March 31, 1999, at the Zion Lutheran Church. Interment will be at the Roundup City cemetery. Memorials can be made to Roundup Memorial Hospital or Zion Lutheran Church.
Wier Funeral Home is in charge of the arrangements.

Albert "Buzz" F. Sadorf
GLENDIVE - Albert "Buzz" F. Sadorf, 70, died Saturday, March 27, 1999, at the Glendive Medical Center in Glendive.
Vigil service will be at 7 p.m. Tuesday, March 30, at the Chapel of the Silvernale-Silha Funeral Home in Glendive. Mass will be at 10 a.m. Wednesday, March 31, at the Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Glendive. Interment will be in the Dawson County cemetery in Glendive.

Donald K. Sorkness
Donald K. Sorkness, 77 of Billings, passed away at his home Sunday, March 28, 1999.
He was a son of Lloyd and Ruth Sorkness, born Dec. 13, 1921, at Dodson, and graduated form Dodson High School.
He worked for the Great Northern Railroad in 1942, retiring in 1976.
Don married Evelyn Hildebrand, Dec. 4, 1946, at Conrad; she preceded him in death in 1990.
Survivors include a daughter, Judy Shaner of Gillette, Wyo.; three sons, Keith Sorkness of Belt, Steven Sorkness of Everett, Wash., and Randy Sorkness of Laurel; one sister, Anita Yeska of Sioux City, Iowa; and 11 grandchildren and six great-grandchildren.
Services will be held at 2 p.m. Wednesday, March 31, at St. Anthony Catholic Church, Laurel. Interment will be in the Laurel cemetery. Memorials are suggested to your charity of choice. Smith Funeral Chapel-Laurel, was in charge of arrangements.

Wayne R. Braziel
Wayne R. Braziel, 87, passed away peacefully on March 27, 1999 at Valley Health Center.
He was born to Arthur and Ida Mae Braziel on March 16, 1912, in Gebo, Wyo. After his father's death, the family moved to Billings in 1923.
Wayne graduated from Billings Senior High in 1931 and married his high school sweetheart, Bernice Wagner in 1934. They had one child, Joan Cecile Smith. They both preceded him in death. After Bernice's death, Wayne became reacquainted with a childhood friend, Helen Franklin, whom he married in 1979.
Wayne owned and operated Wagners Mens Store in downtown Billings and upon its closure, worked for the family business, Paris Beauty Supply until his retirement.
He served in the Phillipines during World War II in the Signal Corps. He was a member of the Mayflower Congregational Church, The Elks Club, and the Veterans of Foreign Wars. Besides his first wife and daughter, Wayne was preceded in death by his sister, Beulah Walters, and his brother Kenneth Braziel. He is survived by his wife Helen, of Billings; his sisters Ruth Braziel and Zola Betz of Denver; his grandsons, Richard Smith of Saudi Arabia, Gregory Smith of Billings, and Darrell Smith of Florida; eight great-grandchildren and numerous nieces and nephews including Dick Meyers of Billings. He is also survived by two step-daughters, Jacqueline Cox of Las Vegas and Jeannette Clodfelter of Billings and two step-grandchildren.
Cremation has taken place. Memorial services will be held 1 p.m. Friday, April 2, at Michelotti, Sawyers and Nordquist, 1001 Alderson Ave., with interment to follow in Sunset Memorial Gardens.
Memorials in Wayne's name may be made to Big Sky Hospice, P.O. Box 35033, Billings MT 59107.

Bill Elmore
SIDNEY - Bill Elmore, 57, died Saturday, March 27, 1999, at his home in Sidney.
Prayer service will be at 7 p.m. Monday, March 29, in the Stevenson's Funeral Home in Ekalaka. Services will be at 11 a.m. Tuesday, March 30, in the Congregational Church with burial in the I.O.O.F. cemetery, all of Ekalaka.

Ethel R. Gordon
Ethel R. Gordon, formerly of Billings. Graveside memorial service to be held at Billings Mountview cemetery, Sect. 9, Tuesday, March 30, at 10 a.m.

Jerry William Grove
LAUREL - Jerry William Grove, 61 of Laurel, died peacefully in his home on Saturday, March 27, 1999. The son of Charles and Jean Germeraad Grove, he was born Dec. 25, 1937.
He attended schools in Billings and graduated from Billings Senior High School. In 1957, Jerry married Joanne Kennedy and they had five children; Larry (Jackie Watson), Jennifer (Charles Holycross) Davis, Jeff (Rozanne), Laurie (Scan) Brown, all of Billings; and Lisa (Rod) Rader of Sioux City, Iowa.
In 1984, Jerry married Barb Kyriss, welcoming her children to the family. They are Tony Kyriss of Tempe, Ariz., Lisa Keller of Poplar Bluff, Mo., and Steve Kyriss of Salem, Ore.
Jerry worked for United Glass for 30 years before opening his own business in 1991. He was an active member of the Billings Motorcycle Club for many years. He was an outdoorsman and especially enjoyed fishing with family and friends. Jerry was a highly skilled craftsman in his profession and hobbies, whose knowledge and talents were unlimited. He was a great friend to many people, always there to lend a hand and share his abilities.
Jerry will be greatly missed by all those whose lives he touched. We are so thankful for our special memories. He was preceded in death by his parents and two uncles.
In addition to the family members mentioned above, he is survived by his sister, Jane Ann Grove, 17 grandchildren, three aunts, one uncle, and many special friends.
Cremation has taken place and a memorial service will be held 3 p.m. Wednesday, March 31, at Michelotti, Sawyers and Nordquist, 1001 Alderson Ave. If desired, memorials may be sent to the Billings Activity Program, 4635 Simpson, Billings, MT 59101.

Harry Leo Birkenbuel
GREAT FALLS - Harry Leo Birkenbuel, 35, of Great Falls and formerly of Billings and Missoula, died of a viral brain infection Wednesday at a local nursing home.
A memorial to honor Harry is pending in Billings. Memorials are suggested to area youth horse clubs.
Harry was born Jan. 11, 1964, in Great Falls, to Fern H. Paul and the late James G. Birkenbuel. He attended schools in Ulm, Cascade and Great Falls (C.M. Russell). A successful career cosmetologist, he owned and operated Looking Good Beauty Salon in Billings, owned and operated A Special Touch in Lolo, was a manager of Regis Hairstylists in Missoula and was assistant manager of Jannette's Hair Designs in Great Falls.
He was a former president of the Montana State Cosmetologists Association-Billings affiliate, completed teacher training for cosmetology and graduated from Acme Beauty College in Billings in 1986. Well-known throughout the state by colleagues and clients, Harry won numerous awards for haircutting and nails at various beauty competitions.
Harry was an expert horseman, a former member of the Cascade County Sheriff's Posse and had trained race horses with his father at the Great Falls Fairgrounds. He loved dogs, the horse races and gardening. He was also an expert jitterbug dancer and loved to spend time with his many friends.
Survivors include his mother, Fern Paul of Great Falls; a sister, Renata Birkenbuel of Great Falls; brothers, Dennis Birkenbuel of Cascade and Gary Birkenbuel of Missoula; nephews, Clinton Birkenbuel of Great Falls and Travis Birkenbuel of Missoula; and friend, Rodney Schulz of Billings.
He was preceded in death by his father, James Birkenbuel, on March 6, 1999.
