Jeip deHaan
POWELL, Wyo. - Jeip deHaan age 66, a resident of Powell since 1968, died Saturday, May 29, at West Park Hospital in Cody. Mr. deHaan is survived by his wife of 22 years, Mary of the family home; children: Peter deHaan and his wife Debbie, Henny deHaan and her husband, David, Rudy deHaan, and Geri Bulkeley and her husband, Pete; grandchildren: Derrick deHaan, Lacee deHaan, Gregory Kern, Christina deHaan, Rudy Paul deHaan, Jessica deHaan, Zachary deHaan, Bobby Bulkeley, Mandy Bulkeley and Christy Fleming; brother, Leen deHaan; and sisters: Koos Faber and Meep VanGelderen.
Mr. deHaan was preceded in death by his parents and a brother, Peet deHaan.
Mr. deHaan was born in 1932 in Haarlemmermeer, Holland, to Jeip Paulus and Harremijntje deHaan. He moved to the United States with his family to Billings, Mont. in 1962. In 1968, the family moved to Powell and bought the Powell Bakery, which he ran until retiring in 1991. He enjoyed motorcycles, gardening and spending time at the Powell Library.
Memorial services are planned for Wednesday, June 2, at 2 p.m. at Union Presbyterian Church, 329 N. Bent, Powell. Interment of cremains will take place following the service at Crown Hill cemetery, Powell. Should friends desire, memorial contributions may be made in Mr. deHaan's name to the Powell Library. Arrangements by Miratsky-Easton Funeral Home.

James Douglas Denney
POWELL, Wyo. - James Douglas Denney, age 69, died May 29, 1999, at Lovell.
Jim, the fifth child of Russell David and Hilda Dayton Denney, was born at his home on June 4, 1929, about three miles south of Belfry, Mont. He attended school at Belfry. He was drafted in the Army and was stationed at Fort Lewis, Wash. Interrupted by severe illnesses, his working time was spent on farms and ranches in the rural areas of Belfry, Clark and the Powell Valley as a farmhand and in construction.
He was preceded in death by his parents. Survivors include sisters, Esther Parmley of West Yellowstone, Mont., Joise Wolchesky of Billings, Mont., Dorothy (Clarence) Toogood of Belfry, Shirley (Howard) Snively of St. Xavier, Mont.; brothers, David (Elmarie) Denney of Clark, Eldon (Janice) Denney of New Plymouth, Idaho; and 24 nieces and nephews.
Graveside services will be Wednesday, June 2, at 11 a.m. at the Belfry cemetery in Belfry. Memorial services will be held Friday, June 4, at 7 p.m. at the Kingdom Hall of Jehovah's Witnesses in Powell. Miratsky-Easton Funeral Home in charge of arrangements.

Christine Shaw Gransbery
Christine M. Shaw Gransbery passed away at her home Sunday, May 30, 1999, with her husband, D.J., at her side. As she prepared to follow her Spirit, she graced her family with words of love as they gathered around her.
Christine was born on Nov. 1, 1968, All Saints Day, to her loving parents, Patricia and Richard (Ed) Shaw, and joined siblings, Colleen, Kevin and Thomas in Billings. God blessed her with a strong will and crowned her with beautiful red hair. She shared her love and zest for life with her family, friends, and her community.
Her childhood was spent attending Boulder Avenue Elementary School from 1974 to 1980. She was a student at Will James Junior High School and Billings West High School from 1980 to 1985. She graduated with the Class of '86 from Billings Central Catholic High School. As a young girl, Christine played softball and basketball, ran track, went camping, and played with her cat, "Fred." As a young woman, she worked as a secretary at Scentry Biological while attending college and as a clerk at the EMC Bookstore. She graduated May 6, 1995, with a B.S. in special education and elementary education. She was awarded outstanding female senior in elementary education from the Department of Elementary Education. Christine was also nominated for numerous other awards and scholarships.
While in college, she served as president of the Associated Students of Special Education. Christine coordinated and performed with the "Kids on the Block, " a puppet troupe disabilities educational program. The touring puppet show was presented at elementary schools and professional conferences.
In 1991, Christine met the love of her life, Donal J. "D.J." Gransbery and they married on July 25, 1992, at St. Bernard's Catholic Church in Billings. Christine was a loving companion to her husband D.J. Together they bought and nurtured a business, Billings Farm and Ranch Supply, which has grown into a successful operation. In the summer of 1998, they purchased their first house and Christine devoted her energy to decorating their home.
Christine's passion for learning made her a dedicated and caring teacher. She taught at Lockwood Elementary School as a special education teacher from 1993 to 1999. She was highly regarded as an exceptional teacher and loved by her students, fellow teachers and staff She was a marvelous role model who had high expectations for her students. Christine also tutored many children and volunteered her time to the Special Olympics. She bid good-bye to her fifth-grade students Thursday and completed the school year having lunch with her teacher friends on Friday.
In 1998, Christine earned her M.S. in special education in learning disabilities from Montana State University-Billings.
Throughout her life, she was devoted to her family and friends; it brought her great happiness to host celebrations and choose special gifts for those close to her. Christine enjoyed creating handmade crafts, growing flowers and vegetables, and canning her own produce. She was active in softball and volleyball and often ran with her dog, "Hipshot."
Christine loved children, especially her nieces and nephews, showering them with attention and gifts. She was deeply touched by the naming of three babies in her honor.
In September 1998, Christine was diagnosed with cancer and she courageously faced this challenge with her husband, family, and friends by her side. She lived her life fully and bravely, determined to endure the great hardship of cancer and its treatments while continuing to give fully of herself to others. She and D.J. continued to host family and friends in their home.
Christine was the center of family life and gave everyone some special gift of herself. God gave Christine the gifts of strong will and boundless love. In turn, we have loved and admired God's great creation. Her Spirit remains alive and strong with us.
Christine is survived by her beloved husband, D.J. Gransbery; her parents, Ed and Pat Shaw of Billings; her sister, Colleen and Gary Brester; niece, Erin, and nephew, Kyle of Bozeman; her brother, Kevin Shaw of Seattle, Wash.; her brother, Thomas and Colleen Shaw, niece, Sarah, and nephew, Thomas Jr. of Billings; and her grandmother, Clara Shaw of Lodge Grass.
Also surviving are her parents-in-law, Don and Gayle Gransbery of Columbus; her brother-in-law, Wayne and RaeAnn Gransbery; nephew, Thomas of Columbus; her brother-in-law, Les and Michelle Gransbery; nephew, Christopher of Helena; and her grandparents-in-law, Herb and Nancy Wheat of Kona, Hawaii, and Agnes Gransbery of Boise, Idaho. She also will be missed by numerous aunts, uncles, cousins, friends and students.
A Vigil service will be held Wednesday, June 2, 1999, at St. Patrick's Co-Cathedral, 215 N. 31st St., at 7 p.m. A celebration of her life will be held on Thursday, June 3, 1999, at noon at St. Patrick's Co-Cathedral.
Should friends desire, memorials can be made to Big Sky Hospice.

Melvin DeJarnette Simmons
FAIRVIEW - Melvin DeJarnette Simmons was born May 8, 1908, in Havelock, Neb., to Edward B. and Elma (DeJarnette) Simmons. The family homesteaded in Wyoming in 1919 near Gillette. Some years later Melvin filed on one of the last homesteads available in Wyoming.
Melvin moved to Fairview in 1941 and began his career as a feedlot operator and a sheepman, becoming an authority on sheep. He continued his activities until his death.
In 1944 Melvin married Evelyn Olson and they established their home in Fairview. Melvin will be missed by his children, his grandchildren and his great-grandchildren who became the center of his later years.
Melvin was a member of the Masonic Lodge and the Montana Woolgrowers Association.
Melvin died at Roosevelt Memorial Medical Center in Culbertson on Thursday, May 27, 1999, after a short illness.
Melvin was preceded in death by his parents; an infant son, Larry; and infant brother, Kenneth Lee Simmons; and a brother-in-law, Bill Holder.
Survivors include his wife, Evelyn; sons, Richard (Carol) Simmons of Billings and Edward (Debbie) Simmons of Fairview; daughters, Elaine (Jim) Weber of Billings, Elma (Orion) Sundheim of Fairview, and Karen (Jim) Olson of Denver; sisters, Mildred Holder and Mary Alyce (Ray) Hakert of Billings; 11 grandchildren and 10 great-grandchildren.

John F. Allen
John F. Allen, 52, passed away Sunday, March 7, 1999, in Billings. John was born Jan. 9, 1947, in Sheridan, Wyo. He attended elementary school in Roundup and Lockwood; then went on to attend Billings Senior High School. John entered the Army on Jan. 13, 1965. He served in Vietnam one year, then was stationed in Germany a year and a half with the remainder of his service time spent at Fort Ord California. John started at Western Sugar in 1968. He became disabled in 1988. John married Donna Haworth in Powell Wyoming on May 26, 1972. Mr. Allen lived for his family and always had popsicles and candy for the grandchildren and nieces and nephews. He enjoyed the outdoors, fishing and camping.
John is survived by his wife Donna of Billings, a daughter Linda Allgayer of Billings, his mother Lillian Jones of Roundup, a sister Bertha Moore (Amos) of Florida, sister June Wolfe (Bob) of Billings, a brother Cal Allen of Billings, a sister Dixie Lewis of Nevada, a sister Ruth Vork of Washington, a brother Al Allen (Geri) of Billings, a sister Rosemary Petersen of Billings, a sister Daisy Patten (Kelly) of Billings, a sister Toni Carpenter (Dean) of Roundup, a sister Juana Jones (Danny) of Roundup. Also his mother and father-in-law Betty and Speck Haworth, and three grandchildren. We love and miss you grandpa.
John is preceded in death by his father and a stepson Roy Gash. Funeral Services will be held at 11 a.m. Wednesday, March 10, at Smith Downtown Chapel. Interment will follow at Sunset Memorial Gardens.

Tillie Lydia Schutz Gerber
EDGAR - Our Precious Mother went to her heavenly home surrounded by all six of her loving children. She died March 7, in her own home after a long fought battle against diabetes and more recently pancreatic cancer. Momma we miss you already.
Tillie was born in Zealand, N.D., on Oct. 9, 1917, to Lydia (Brandner) and George Schutz. At the age of 9 she moved to the Edgar area with her family. On May 16, 1937, she married Albert Gerber. They farmed in the Edgar area until his death on April 21, 1966. Six children were born to the union through a span of 19 years. Four daughters, Mae Blain, Aggie (Jim) Duke and Jane (Dick) Gradwohl, all of Laurel, and Stella Gerber of Edgar; two sons, Luke (Jessie) Gerber of Hardin and Mark Gerber of Edgar.
Tillie was a cook at the Edgar School for 26 years. She was a very loving person and was loved by all her family and friends. She loved flowers and gardening, collecting knickknacks, watching birds and life in general.
She loved and was very proud of her 13 cherished grandchildren, 19 great-grandchildren and one great-great-grandchild. She was very close to her five sisters, Frieda Mocabee, Ella Wuest, Darlene Bequette, Phyllis Naesans and Donna Duffield; and her three brothers, John, Ruben, and Gerhardt.
Preceding her in death were her husband, her parents, one granddaughter, three brothers, and a son-in-law.
Mom, thanks from all our hearts for your loving devoted and caring ways. You gave your all and you gave it with total love.
Sweet peaceful rest Momma, we love you.
Funeral services will be 2 p.m. Thursday in the Edgar Gymnasium. Memorials may be made to Big Sky Hospice, Box 35033, Billings, MT 59107 or the Edgar-Joliet Ambulance.

Bernice Kessler
PLENTYWOOD - Funeral services for Bernice Kessler will be held at 2 p.m. Wednesday. Bonnie Robinson and Sue Hashley will officiate at the service at Fulkerson Memorial Chapel; interment will be in Plentywood cemetery. Bernice, 80, died Saturday evening, March 6, at Sheridan Memorial Nursing Home in Plentywood.
Bernice was born Dec. 2, 1918, at the farm home of her parents, Sophus and Hannah (Nelson) Morstad in the Raymond community. She grew up there, and married Paul Kessler Feb. 9, 1941, in Seattle, Wash. They made their home in Seattle for over 60 years; after Paul's death, Oct. 26, 1997, Bernice moved back to Plentywood, and made her home at the Montana Pioneer Manor until she entered the nursing home. Creative and industrious, Bernice enjoyed handicrafts and fine needlework, making pictures, and collecting anything about owls. She cared for neighbors, friends, and family, and often forgot about herself as she cared for other people. Bernice and Paul loved to travel, and had visited all 50 states. For 20 years in the Seattle area, she was close to, and for a time lived with her niece, Janice, and her husband, Arno Rasmussen, and became like "grandma" to their children, Shawn and Darren, and grandchildren, Mitchell and Austin. A gracious, gentle lady, she was always smiling and cheerful, and even when she was in pain, she said "I'm fine ... just fine!"
Bernice is survived by a brother, Waldo Morstad and his wife, Freda of Raymond; and by two sisters, Boletta Corcoran of Plentywood and Evelyn Willumsen and her husband, Lloyd, of Missoula; and by sisters-in-law, Jane and Hilda Morstad. She is also survived by nephews and nieces, especially Janice and Arno Rasmussen and their family of Alberton. She was preceded in death by brothers, Arvid and Willard, and a sister, Dora Seed.
Fulkerson Funeral Home of Plentywood has charge of arrangements.

Helen E. Kitzman
Helen E. Kitzman, 79, of Billings, died Monday, March 8, 1999, at Deaconess Hospital as a result of a stroke. She was born May 18, 1919, in Scottsbluff, Neb., a daughter of Henry and Katie Bott Glockhamer.
She graduated from Billings Senior High and married Martin B. Kitzman in Billings on Sept. 24, 1940. Helen had worked at St. Vincent Hospital for a short period and had lived in Billings most of her life.
Survivors include her husband, Martin; one son, Richard (Helen) Kitzman of New Orleans, La.; three daughters, Karen Kitzman of Anaheim, Calif., Joyce (George) Smitham of Alameda, Calif., and Ronna (Bob) Vanover of Clarkston, Wash.; four grandchildren; two sisters, Elsie Gabel of Billings and Betty (Ernest) Thompson of Seattle; one brother, Fred (Jerri) Glockhamer of Tucson, Ariz.; and numerous nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her parents and her son, Ronald.
At her request, no services will be held. Cremation has taken place at Cremation or Funeral Gallery.

Beatrice (Bea) Leavell
Beatrice Leavell, 81 of Billings, died Sunday, March 7, 1999, at her son's home. Bea was born April 16, 1917, in Porterville, Calif., the daughter of Samuel David and Minerva Ann (McCord) Hynes. She received her education in Los Angeles.
On Aug. 29, 1938, Bea was united in marriage to Paul Eugene Leavell in Westwood, Calif. Paul died in 1967. In 1979 Bea moved to Billings.
Bea loved her sons, grandchildren and great-grandchildren, Her hobbies were gardening and crocheting. Her church, and accepting her Lord as her personal savior was a large part of her life, and she avidly read her Bible.
Survivors include her son, Eugene Leavell and wife, Sue of Hemet, Calif.; son, Robert Leavell and wife, Judy of Billings; nine grandchildren; 14 great-grandchildren; and a sister, Irene Henry of California.
Bea was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Paul; great-grandson, Anthony Leach; three brothers and two sisters.
Funeral services will be 11 a.m. Tuesday, March 9, 1999, at West Side Baptist Church. Interment will be in the Rose Hills Memorial Park in Whittier, Calif.

Theodore Mlakar
Theodore Mlakar, age 80, of Billings, formerly of Red Lodge, died Monday, March 8, 1999, at Deaconess Medical Center.
He was born Jan. 10, 1919, at Washoe, the son of Joseph and Frances (Chersel) Mlakar. He was raised in Washoe and attended school there, moving to Red Lodge in 1936.
Theodore served in the U.S. Army during WW II. He was a prisoner of war in North Africa and in Italy. After his discharge he worked on Hungry Horse Dam for the Bureau of Reclamation for a year. He then lived in Billings where he worked for Gamble-Robinson for five years and then was employed by the City of Billings 33 years working as a loader operator, retiring in 1981.
On Aug. 10, 1946, he married Vada Park in Whitefish.
Survivors include a son, Jerry Mlakar and his wife, Lana of Moorpark, Calif.; a daughter, Linda Cooper and husband, Kirk of Ballantine; two grandchildren, Dustin and Melissa; and a granddaughter-in-law, Sarah Cooper. He was preceded in death by his wife, Vada, in 1992; a grandson, Joshua Mlakar; four brothers; two sisters; and his parents.
Funeral services will be 10 a.m. Thursday, March 11, at the Olcott Funeral Chapel, 201 N. Broadway, in Red Lodge. Interment will be in the Red Lodge cemetery. Visitation will be at Smith's Downtown Chapel, 120 N. 26th St. in Billings, 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. Wednesday.

Jeanne Marie Redd
A very quiet, gentle presence left to be with our Lord on Monday morning, March 8, 1999. Jeanne Marie Redd passed away peacefully at Deaconess Medical Center in Billings at the age of 62. She was born on Jan. 16, 1937, in Dickinson, N.D., and grew up in Fairview.
Jeanne married Rex M. Redd and shared many years of love with each other, their children, and their grandchildren. She always enjoyed loving and giving to her family and friends. Jeanne touched many lives and her gentle and precious spirit will be greatly missed. One of her favorite hobbies was collecting Precious Moments - they reminded her of her children and grandchildren and how God works in their lives. Jeanne worked at Herberger's for 15 years and was loved and respected by her co-workers and customers. She was preceded in death by her mother, Julie Krank, and one brother, Larry Krank.
Survivors include her husband, Rex of Billings; her children, Susan Lake (Bill) of Missoula, Ron Redd (Susan) of Riverside, Calif., and Rex W. Redd (Cindy) of Knoxsville, Tenn.; her sister, Dorothy Dinius of Spokane, Wash.; and six grandchildren, Scott, Steven, Crissy, ReneC, Megan, and little Ryan Rex.
A Vigil Service will be held 7 p.m. Tuesday, March 9, at St. Bernard's Parish. Funeral Mass will be celebrated 10 a.m. Wednesday, March 10, at St. Bernard's Parish with cremation to follow. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be directed to St. Bernard's Parish, 226 Wicks Lane, Billings, MT 59105. Michelotti, Sawyers & Nordquist has charge of arrangements.

Irene Cecilia Reed
MILES CITY - Irene Cecilia Reed, age 69, wife of Dick of Miles City, passed away Sunday, March 7, 1999, at the Holy Rosary Health Center.
Irene was born on Dec. 9, 1929, in Cohagen, the daughter of Valentine and Katey (Diebele) Dyba. When Irene was a baby, her mom passed away and she was raised by her aunt and uncle Diebele. Their family lived in the Powder River area and later moved into Miles City where she attended schools. She worked for area restaurants in Miles City and for dude ranches in Wyoming and Washington. She later returned to Miles City. On Dec. 4, 1949, Irene married Dick Reed in Glendive.
Irene is survived by her husband, Dick of Miles City; three sons: Rick Reed and his wife, Kim of Helena, Jay Reed and his wife, Linda of Sidney, and Curtis and his wife, Lori of Missoula; a daughter, Wanda Reed of Miles City; a sister, Agnes Martin of Sweet Water, Texas; seven grandchildren, and two great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her parents; a brother, Joseph Dyba; and an uncle, Ralph Diebele.
A Vigil service will be held Tuesday, March 9, 1999, at 6 p.m. in the Chapel of Stevenson & Sons Funeral Home. Funeral services will be held Wednesday, March 10, 1999, at 11 a.m. at the Chapel of Stevenson & Sons Funeral Home with Father Gil Hemauer-Capuchin officiating. A private family burial will follow at a later date. Stevenson & Sons Funeral Home of Miles City is in charge of the arrangements.
