Jayne U. Reeve
MILES CITY - Jayne U. Reeve, 65, Miles City resident, died on Tuesday evening, April 6, 1999, at the Central Montana Skilled Nursing Center in Lewistown. She had been a resident there since becoming acutely ill while visiting her daughter who lives in Lewistown. Jayne died from cancer.
She was born in Minot, N.D., on Aug. 2, 1933, to Wallace and Alice (Kelly) Garrett. She attended school at St. Leo's in Minot, St. Mary's in Devil's Lake and in 1954 graduated from high school at Glasgow. She also attended Miles City Community College.
Jayne was married to Walter A. Hill in Glasgow. They later divorced. She was then married to Edward Reeve in Miles City; they later divorced. Jayne was very artistic. She enjoyed counted cross stitch, politics and reading. She loved to cook. She had a wonderful sense of humor, was known for her kindness to others, including her family and numerous friends.
Survivors include two sons: David Hill of Austin, Texas, and Daniel (Cassie) Hill of Cheyenne, Wyo.; and two daughters: Mary Beth (Kenneth) Kohl of Lewistown and Beverly (Roger) Sabot of Rogers, Minn. In addition, she is survived by grandchildren: Erica and Ben Hill and Matthew Kohl all of Billings, Thomas and Marianne "Annie" Kohl of Lewistown, Kyle and Kathryn Sabot of Rogers, and Cadi Hill of Cheyenne. Also surviving are three sisters: Mary Agnes (Curtis) Balcom of McClusky, N.D., Betty (Emil) Eman of Minot, and Billy Ann (John) Griffin of Modesto, Calif., and many nieces, nephews and friends. She was preceded in death by her parents; one sister, Pat; and a granddaughter, Christine Kohl.
A memorial service for Jayne U. Reeve will be held in Miles City at Sacred Heart Catholic Church at a later date. Cremation has taken place.
Memorials are suggested to Holy Rosary Cancer Center in Miles City or to the local hospice program.
Creel Funeral Home of Lewistown and Stevenson and Sons Funeral Home of Miles City are in charge of arrangements.

Viola K. Sandy
OLYMPIA, Wash. - Viola K. Sandy, 83, a 15-year resident of the Olympia area, passed away Wednesday, March 31, 1999, of cancer at the Columbia Capital Medical Center in Olympia.
Viola was born Feb. 7, 1916, in Knobs, Mont., to Urvin W. and Bertha (Gunderson) Cox. She married Royal H. Sandy on Aug. 14, 1937, in Miles City, Mont. Until moving to Olympia in 1984, Mrs. Sandy made her home in Ekalaka, Mont., where she was active in the community. She taught high school, was co-owner and manager of an appliance and contracting business and also worked for the Carter County Treasurer's Office.
Viola was an active member of the Ekalaka Congregational Church and the Carter County Geological Society. She was also a member of the Alpha Gamma Delta Sorority, Montana State University Chapter. She was an accomplished seamstress and enjoyed home decorating, cooking, gardening, traveling and was devoted to her immediate and extended family.
Survivors include her husband, Royal of Olympia; two daughters, Sandra K. Smith and Linda Leibly of Olympia; three brothers, Wayne and Robert Cox of Helena, Mont., and Dan Cox of Denver; a sister, Ariel McClain of Baker, Mont.; four grandchildren and two great-grandchildren. A brother, Edwin Cox, preceded her in death.
Family services will be held later in Montana. Memorial donations may be made to the Salvation Army. Mills & Mills Funeral Directors are in charge of arrangements.

Douglas G. 'Duke' Swanson
LEWISTOWN - Douglas C. "Duke" Swanson, 42, of Lewistown died Sunday morning at Benefis East Hospital in Great Falls of complications following brain surgery. He was born Feb. 6, 1957, in Lewistown the son of Ronald and Janet (McGuire) Swanson. He received his schooling in Lewistown graduating from St. Leo's High School in 1975. He then attended the University of Montana at Missoula for three-and-a-half years. He then began working for the Burlington Northern Railroad where he was employed as a project manager at the time of his death.
Doug enjoyed hunting, fishing, golfing and playing the guitar and spending time with his family.
He is survived by one son: Landon Douglas and one daughter, Ashley Brooke, both of Lewistown; his parents, Ron and Janet of Lewistown; one sister, Nancy Marshall and her husband, Skye, and son, Connor of Seattle; brothers: Ken and his wife, Sara and children, Leigh and Jon of Seattle, Kevin and his wife, Katy and son, Kevin Jr. of Great Falls and daughter, Misty Ellingson of Williston, N.D., and Bob and his wife, Tiffani and son, Seth of Lewistown; grandmother, Irene Hoenstine of Anaconda.
Vigil Services for Doug Swanson will be Wednesday at 7 p.m. in St. Leo's Catholic Church. Funeral Liturgy will be Thursday at 11 a.m. St. Leo's Catholic Church. Interment will follow in Calvary cemetery. The Cloyd Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.
Memorials may be made to the Swanson Children Fund and they may be left at the Cloyd Funeral Home or sent to Norwest Bank of Lewistown.

Paul Frank Roundstone Sr.
LAME DEER - Paul Frank Roundstone Sr. was born in Sheridan, Wyo. He was 76 years of age and died on March 6, 1999, of respiratory failure at St. Vincent hospital in Billings. He was born on April 4, 1922. He was one of the last remaining 2nd Sage Clan (No-Dami) Chief.
He spent his childhood years in Busby and later moved to Lame Deer. Frank, our father, brother, uncle and grandfather will be greatly missed. He was such a kind, gentle, and generous man. He participated in the Sundance five times. He enjoyed attending rodeos and powwows. He was one of the few fine artists who made beautiful head roaches that were for traditional Indian outfits. He made the first men's fancy dancing outfit on the Northern Cheyenne Reservation. He skinned deer with old traditional skills that made it simple.
Frank contributed his time with others in fencing the Northern Cheyenne Reservation. He worked for the Forsyth Railroad Co., Alzada oil fields, Pump Division in California and was a ranch hand for local ranchers on the N.C. Reservation.
Frank is preceded in death by his sons, Richard Blame Roundstone, Wayne and Wendell Roundstone; his wife Dorothy Medicine Elk; his parents Fred Roundstone and Flora Plenty Camps; his sister, Sara Blackwolf and his brother Martin Roundstone Sr.
Survivors include: one remaining sister, Buella Siouxcalf, his son, Frank Archie Roundstone and daughter, Elvina Roundstone and a special granddaughter Jennifer Roundstone-Kewan. He has (14) fourteen grandchildren and (12) great-grandchildren, as well as many nephews, nieces and relatives.
The Wake service will be held at 8 p.m. Wednesday, March 10, at Mr. and Mrs. Archie Roundstone's residence in Lame Deer. The Funeral services will be held at the Catholic Church at 11 a.m. Thursday, March 11, in Lame Deer. Interment will be at the Busby cemetery.
Memorials may be given to Jennifer Roundstone-Kewan, 2355 Ave.C, Apt #5, Billings, MT. 59102.

Ada Weitkamp
POWELL, Wyo. - Ada Weitkamp, 93, died March 7, 1999.
Visitation will be from 6-8 p.m. Thursday, March 11, at the Miratsky-Easton Funeral Home in Powell. Services will be at 10 a.m. Friday, March 12, at the Funeral Home. Interment will be at Crown Hill cemetery in Powell.

Nona Ruth Clifton Arneson
HYSHAM - On March 4, 1999, Jesus saw our loving wife, mother and grandmother's work was done, and rewarded her wings to go with her halo. She selflessly devoted her life to her faith in the Lord, family and helping others.
Nona was born Oct. 24, 1932, in Scarbo, W.Va., the daughter of Daniel "Guy" and Lola Wriston Clifton, the eldest of nine children. She moved to Ingomar when she was nine years old. Nona attended schools in Ingomar until Kenneth "swept her off her feet."
On June 25, 1949, Nona married Kenneth Arneson in the American Lutheran Church in Billings. This June would have marked their 30th Anniversary. Kenneth and Nona farmed for 40 years in Pease Bottom before retiring to Hysham in 1990. Nona enjoyed birds, flowers, gardening, playing cards, crossword puzzles, fishing and watching videos. She especially enjoyed trips to West Virginia to visit with relatives. She taught Sunday School for over 20 years and held offices of secretary and Sunday School Superintendent. She also belonged to the Friendly Garden Club, the canasta club and was the secretary/treasurer of the Rancher's cemetery.
She is survived by her husband, Kenneth; her children, Carol and Gene Gamble, Gary and Sandy Arneson, Gordon and Elaine Arneson, Naomi and Kenneth Rolandson, all of Hysham, Lisa and Darin Linger of Laurel and Alana and Kory Kober of Columbus; 14 grandchildren and six great-grandchildren. She is also survived by four brothers, three sisters and numerous nieces and nephews. Nona was preceded in death by her parents and her sister Virginia.
Funeral services will be held 11 a.m. Tuesday, March 9, at the St. Joseph Catholic Church in Hysham with interment to follow in the Rancher's cemetery. Visitation will be held Monday from 11 a.m. to 7 p.m. at the Beals Mortuary Chapel in Forsyth. Family visitation will be held from 9 a.m. to 10 a.m. at the St. Joseph Catholic Church with public visitation following until the service. Memorials may be made to the Stain Glass Fund at the Trinity Lutheran Church of Hysham or the Rancher's cemetery in care of Keith Kimball. Beals Mortuary of Forsyth is in charge of the arrangements.

Lois Beslanowitch Belec
POWELL - Lois Beslanowitch Belec, 69, died at the Pioneer Home in Thermopolis, Wyo., March 4, 1999.
Rosary will be at 7 p.m. Monday, March 8, at St. Barbara's Catholic Church in Powell. Mass of Resurrection will be at 10 a.m. Tuesday, March 9, at the Church. Interment will be at Crown Hill cemetery in Powell. Miratsky-Easton Funeral Home in charge of arrangements.

Mayme Bell
ROBERTS - Mayme Julia Harmala Bell, 93, of Roberts, died Saturday, March 6, 1999, of pneumonia in Beartooth Hospital and Health Center in Red Lodge. She was born on March 1, 1906, on the family homestead in the Cottonwood area near Roberts, a daughter of Erick and Sofia (Hakkila) Harmala.
Mayme and Matt O. Bell were married in Red Lodge on Sept. 17, 1926. She was preceded in death by her husband in 1947, and by one sister and five brothers.
She lived her entire life on the farm at Roberts. She loved to knit, crochet, listen to music and dance. She also enjoyed cooking and family gatherings, and there was always coffee and Finn bread for visitors. Mayme made a beautiful afghan for each of her grandchildren. She taught quite a few of the young gentlemen in the community to dance, and was an avid bowler well into her eighties.
Survivors include two sons, Leonard Bell of Roberts, and Arthur (Cammie) Bell of Billings; three grandchildren, Allan (Connie) Bell of Roberts, Theresa (John) Hanson of Billings, and Gene (Karen) Bell of Maple Valley, Wash.; four great-grandchildren, Erik Souther, Kaitlin Hanson and Colin and Conner Bell; and two step-great-grandchildren, Travis and Ashley Hanson.
The family would like to sincerely thank the staff of Cedar Wood Villa for the care they gave Mayme during the last four years of her life.
Funeral services will be held at 1 p.m. Wednesday, March 10, in the Olcott Funeral Chapel. Interment will be in the Roberts cemetery.
Memorials may be given to Cedar Wood Villa, P.O. Box 430, Red Lodge MT 59068.

Clifton Laclead Conaway
Mr. Conaway was born in Reynolds, Neb., the son of Dr. and Mrs. H. O. Conaway. He graduated from Jackson High School, Lincoln, Neb., from the University of Nebraska, and attended the School of Law.
From 1933 to 1936, he was announcer, script writer and manager of radio stations in Lincoln and Kearney Nebraska. From 1936 to 1938, he was Securities Analyst for J. C. Todd Investment Company, Lincoln, Neb. From 1938 to 1942, he was Territory Manager for the Bemis Brother Bag Company, Omaha, Neb.
He married June Butler in Norfolk, Neb., in 1942.
Early in 1942, he enlisted in the United States Army, and for three years served, as a Special Agent, with the Counter Intelligence Corps.
After his discharge from the Army, Cliff and June moved to Billings where he accepted the position of Report and Information Specialist for the U.S. Bureau of Reclamation. From 1948 to 1971, he was Staff Assistant for the Interior Missouri River Basin Field Committee. From 1971 until his retirement in 1977, Cliff served as chief of the Branch of Industrial Development, Bureau of Indian Affairs..
During his service with the Department of the Interior, he received a Meritorious Award from the Black Feet Indian Writing Company, and the Meritorious Service Award from the Department of the Interior.
After retiring from Government service, Cliff was a Sales Counselor for I.C.R. Realty. Later he formed his own company, Great Outdoor Products, manufacturing and selling gear to the outdoors man.
During his son's early years, Cliff was active in the Rimrock Elementary School P.T.A. and a part-time coach for the fledgling Y.M.C.A. swim team. He and June chaperoned and provided transportation for the members to out-of-town meets.
Mr. Conaway was an enthusiastic advocate for the Boy Scouts. He was a Black Otter District Executive Board member; he was on the National Council, and attended three World Jamborees and two National Jamborees. A highlight for Cliff was to serve as an adult leader for his son's troop to the World Jamboree in Greece. After having served Scouting for sixteen years, Cliff was the recipient of the Silver Beaver Award for his dedicated leadership.
As a Rotarian since 1957, Cliff served the organization as a member of the Board of Directors, Vice President, and President. He was granted the Paul Harvey Award from this organization. Mr. Conaway also served as Commander of the Disabled American Veterans.
Cliff was an avid hunter, fisherman, and skier; he was a member of the National Ski Patrol for several years.
Mr. Conaway was a charter member of the Rimrock Masonic Lodge, a member of Al Bedoo Shrine, the Elks Lodge, Yellowstone Country Club and St. Stephen's Church.
Mr. Conaway is survived by June, his wife of fifty-seven years; his son Michael and wife Lynn of Evanston, Wyo., and the shining stars of his life, his grandson Sean Conaway and his granddaughter Meghan Conaway of Douglas, Wyo.
Memorial services will be 6:30 p.m. Saturday, March 13, at St. Stephen's Episcopal Church.
Memorials to the Boy Scouts of America, Billings Family Services, or the charity of one's choice.
Michelotti, Sawyers and Nordquist has charge of arrangements.

Julia C. Dooley
Our beloved "Aunt Julie" went home to our Lord on March 6, 1999, after a long illness.
Julia was born, Juliana Enriqueta Herrera on July 4, 1918, in Trinidad, Colo., to Pablo Herrera and Josefa Serna. She moved at an early age to Montana, where she attended grade school and graduated from Billings Senior High School in 1936. After graduation she worked at the telegraph office, later working with Dunn and Bradstreet before retiring in 1973. She married Clifford Lee Dooley on May 31, 1966.
Julia is survived by a step-daughter, Gwen Hall of Texas; a niece, Janet Hathaway of Hamilton; a nephew, Donald Dooley of Helena; her very special friends, Mary of Washington State, Clara and Domingo of Butte, and Val and Paula, Manuel, Lucy, Gail, and Nitchie and her family all of Billings.
"Aunt Julie, you will always be in our hearts. You are now free of pain and anxiety: rest in peace."
Cremation is planned and a Memorial Rosary and Mass will be held at 7 p.m. on Wednesday, March 10, at the Smith Downtown Chapel. Smith Downtown Chapel is in charge of arrangements and cremation.

Vera Sessions Griggs
BYRON, Wyo. - Vera Sessions Griggs, pioneer resident of Byron, passed away peacefully on March 4, 1999, one month short of her 99th birthday.
Vera was born April 3, 1900, in Woodruff, Utah, to Byron and Ellen Cox Sessions. At three months of age, she and her mother joined the rest of the family in the newly formed Mormon settlement of Byron. She was the fifth of thirteen children.
Vera married John Samuel Griggs on Feb. 8, 1919, after his honorable discharge from the U.S. Army Medical Corps. Their marriage was later solemnized in the Salt Lake City L.D.S. Temple. Four children were born to this union; Thelma Sprague, Florence Nally, Samuel Griggs and Donald H. Griggs. The family homesteaded in Powell later moving to Chattam and finally establishing a home in Byron.
Vera was preceded in death by her parents, her husband, eleven siblings, one son, one daughter and one granddaughter Survivors include a daughter, Thelma Sprague of Powell, a son Samule Griggs and wife Edna of Lake Havasu, Ariz., a brother Glen Sessions, nine grandchildren, 21 great grandchildren, and 14 great-great grandchildren and countless nieces, nephews and other family members.
Vera was active in the LDS Relief Society, Homemakers Club, and VFW Auxiliary.
Funeral services will be held at the Byron LDS Chapel on Monday, March 8, at 2 p.m. with interment at the Byron cemetery. Haskell Funeral Home of Lovell is in charge of arrangements.

John A. Gunville
RYEGATE - John A. Gunville, 51, Ryegate passed away Friday, March 5, 1999, at St. Vincent Hospital following complications from cancer.
John was born June 8, 1947, in Belcourt, N.D., to Fred and Mary Boyer Gunville. He attended school in Dunseith, N.D., graduating in 1967. He served his country during the Vietnam War and received the Purple Heart Award. He worked in the oilfields and on various ranches in the Ryegate area. John enjoyed participating and watching all sports and was also an avid gardener.
John is survived by Red and Nancy Anderson; four sisters, four brothers and numerous nieces and nephews.
Visitation will be held at the Wier Funeral Chapel in Roundup from 5-9 p.m., Monday, March 8. Services 10 a.m. Tuesday, March 9, at the chapel. Interment will follow at Roundup City cemetery with military honors. Wier Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.
