Ethel Inman Humphreys
Ethel Inman Humphreys, wife of Reese W. Humphreys, died Jan. 15, 1999, at St. John's Lutheran Home, where she had been a resident for several years. She was 89.
She is survived by her husband of 25 years, also a resident of St. John's; children from her first marriage to Fred L. Inman (deceased) include two sons, C. Robert Inman and Fred Lee Inman; two daughters, Helen Graham and Mary Bartlett; a brother, Warren G. Smyth; a sister, Ruth Sabins; nine grandchildren, numerous great-grandchildren; as well as stepsons, R. William Humphreys of Langley, Wash., Richard Humphreys of Spokane, Wash., and Thomas Humphreys of River Falls, Wis.

Ethel graduated in 1926 from Malta High School. She took her RN training at Kennedy Deaconess Hospital in Havre. Mrs. Humphreys retired from Billings Deaconess Hospital in 1970, where she was Director of Nursing Service for many years. In 1973, she married Reese Humphreys. They moved to St. Paul, Minn., until Mr. Humphreys retired from his position with the railroad. They returned to make their home in Billings.

Ethel enjoyed traveling, and in addition, sewing, quilting, knitting, and other handicrafts. She was associated with many service organizations during her working years and after her retirement which included Pink Ladies and the Red Cross. She was also an active member of Grace United Methodist Church in Billings.

Funeral services will be held 2 p.m. Friday, Jan. 22, at Grace United Methodist Church with Pastor Gary Treglown officiating. Interment will be in Sunset Memorial Gardens. In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations be made to either Grace United Methodist Church or St. John's Lutheran Rome.

Michelotti, Sawyers & Nordquist has charge of arrangements.

Dr. Elia G. Nickoloff
Dr. Elia G. Nickoloff, 57, of Billings, passed away Thursday, Jan. 14, 1999. The son of George and Dina Nickoloff, he was born Dec. 13, 1941.
Ella was a semi-retired college professor at Montana State University-Billings, specializing in the Special Education field.

He is survived by his three children, Kurtis, Chris, and Kari; his three brothers, John, Nick, and Jim; his sister, Christine; and numerous nieces and nephews.

Elia was a great father and a fair golfer. He will be loved and missed by his family, friends, and colleagues.

Cremation has taken place and a memorial service will be held 11 a.m. Wednesday at Michelotti, Sawyers & Nordquist.

Jean Leona Harper
ROUNDUP - Jean Leona Harper, 72, of Roundup went to be with her maker on Jan.15, 1999.
Born Dec. 27, 1926, in Vicars Hospital, Roundup, she was the youngest child of Dennis and Maude Shaw Harper.

Jean made her home in Lynwood, Calif., and retired to Roundup in 1991 with her brother Jack.

Jean's favorite pastimes were playing the piano and shopping. She spent many hours shopping with her good friend, Laurie Harper and cousin Dorothy Harper.

She was preceded in death by her parents and two sisters Marian and Marge.

She is survived by her brother Jack Harper of Roundup, four nieces; Sandra Kaufman, Jean Eberts, Terria Olin of Billings, and Janet DeVries of Roundup.

Visitation will be held on Monday evening, Jan. 18, from 5-9 p.m. at the Wier Funeral Chapel in Roundup. Services are scheduled for 11 a.m. Tuesday, Jan. 19, at the Emmanuel Baptist Church, with interment in the Roundup City cemetery. A luncheon will follow in the church basement.

Memorials may be sent to the Roundup Memorial Nursing Home or the Emmanuel Baptist Church. Wier Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

Dorothy Francis Rawle
GLENDIVE - Dorothy Francis Rawle, age 75, of Glendive, passed away on Sunday, Feb. 7, 1999, at the Wibaux County Nursing Home in Wibaux.
Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Friday, Feb. 12, 1999, at the Chapel of the Silvernale-Silha Funeral Home in Glendive with Pastor Arlie Rauch officiating. Interment will be in the Dawson Memorial cemetery in Glendive. Silvernale-Silha Funeral Home of Glendive is entrusted with arrangements.

Dorothy was born on March 20, 1923, in Vernon, Texas, the daughter of William Harrison "Harry" and Lena Mae (Parker) Sneed. She was raised and educated in Harold, Texas, graduating from high school there. In 1942, the family moved to Edmond, Okla., where Dorothy worked at Tinker Field Air Service Base until her marriage on Oct. 7, 1945, to Richard Earl Rawle. After living in several states, they moved to Glendive in 1960. Dorothy was active in the First Baptist Church and in the community. She had served at the R.S.V.P. Director and was awarded the Diana Award in 1973.

Dorothy was preceded in death by her parents, her husband in October of 1992, and a grandson.

Survivors include two daughters, Sheila Ann Wyze and her husband, John of Mineola, Texas, and Francis Eileen McCowan and her husband, Rigan of Panama City, Fla.; two sons, Richard Earl Rawle Jr. and his wife, Lorraine of Glendive, and Roger Dewayne Rawle and his wife, Julie of Alliance, Neb.; three brothers, Garland R. Sneed of Midwest City, Okla., Harry Sneed Jr. of Salt Lake City, Utah, and Parker H. Sneed of Edmond, Okla.; one sister, Era Mae Coleman of Midwest City, Okla.; seven grandchildren and six great-grandchildren.

Elsie Marie Forbes Childs
LIVINGSTON - Elsie Marie Forbes Childs, age 80, died Feb. 3, 1999, in the Livingston Montana Health & Rehabilitation Center of Alzheimer's disease and related ailments, for the past 13 years.
Survivors: husband, Glen T. Childs, Livingston; son, Kim and his wife, Joyce Childs, Idaho Falls, Idaho; sister, Ena Mader and husband, Dick Mader, Gillette, Wyo.; nephews, Troy and Kelly Mader of Gillette; granddaughters, Ashley Childs, Bozeman, Brady Weber, Clackamas, Ore.; cousins, Norma Gibbs and husband, Leo of Boise, Idaho, and George Murdoch, Aberdeen, Scotland; friends: Helen Dawson, Ora Reddy, Alice Otten, Betty Kretzman, Helena; Mr. and Mrs. M.C. Gosnay, Marble Falls, Texas; Anne Van Wessem, Livingston.

Elsie was born Sept. 28, 1918, in Kepplerville, south of Jordan. Father Charles Forbes; Mother Cora Forbes. She attended grade school in Kepplerville and high school in Miles City. She worked for one year in Washington, D.C., as a clerk/stenographer for the U.S. Department of Agriculture and while there attended one year of night school at Georgetown University. She then worked for one year at the USDA field station at Huntley. Next she was employed as a clerk in downtown Billings, and while there took flying lessons in a Piper Cub at the Billings airport.

In 1942 Elsie moved to Helena where she served the Federal Aviation Agency Flight Standards branch as an aviation clerk/stenographer for the Federal Accident inspectors, until retirement in 1973.

Elsie's hobbies were flying light aircraft, hiking Western Montana, downhill and cross country skiing, horseback riding and scenery watching western U.S. She was the first lady pilot in the city of Helena to obtain a commercial flight certificate. In addition she obtained ground instructor and instrument ratings and compiled more than 2, 000 hours of flight time. She was a highly "skilled" mountain pilot with a perfect safety record.

She entered the first Calgary Stampede efficiency air race and brought back the first place trophy for women and finished second overall competing against pilots, both men and women, from all parts of North America. She won first place trophy for the Big Sky All Woman efficiency race with co-pilot Helen Dunlop of Helena. The pair competed in the All Woman Transcontinental Air Race from Lawrence, Mass., to Spokane, Wash. As a Civil Air Patrol member, Elsie flew several lost aircraft and flood missions in military light aircraft.

Elsie served a tour as Chairman of the Montana (99's) (International women pilot organization) and also did considerable air marking in Montana and served as chairman of the Amelia Earhart Scholarship fund. Elsie was an accomplished horse back rider having done lots of riding in the badlands near her parents' sheep ranch southeast of Jordan. One of her favorite rides was in the 1950s when Helena put on a "Golden Canyon Days parade." She rode in a large group of horses beside Hollywood actors George Montgomery, Gary Cooper and Dinah Shore.

One of her favorite flights in her Stinson was a group flight of 30 light planes along Alaska Highway to Anchorage, Alaska, and then northward to Fort Yukon, Alaska, and back home via Whitehorse and Sweet Grass border crossing. The flight encountered its only mishap when five dogs got into a fight while clearing customs and they tore off the aircraft's low frequency antennae on the bottom of the plane. Her flying career was cut short in 1985 when she contracted Alzheimer's disease.

Ned E. Crosby
Ned E. Crosby of Eagle Cliff Manor in Billings went to be with his loving and waiting wife Tonnie on Sunday, Feb. 7, 1999, after a short illness of two days and living with the dreaded Alzheimer's disease for a year-and-a-half. He would have been 85 on Feb. 17, 1999.
He was born in Newlon in 1914, the first son of W.A. "Bill" and Gladys Jackson Crosby. His father Bill was born in Esteline, S.D., came to Montana in a covered wagon, and settled in the Miles City area. His mother Gladys was born on the old Figure 6 Ranch around Ashland, and later lived in Big Horn, Wyo. Before meeting and marrying Ned's dad, she taught school in Montana.

Ned was brought up and received his schooling in Midwest, Wyo., and Crow Agency. He was a "Jack of All Trades." Working as a mechanic was his main trade and he loved working on cars and owned many of them during his life. In the 1940s Ned went to California for his physical to be drafted into the armed forces, but due to a health problem, he was deemed 4-F.

After this, Ned and his wife and daughter moved around the U.S.A. following his dreams for some years before returning to stay in Montana, first to Lodge Grass and then to the Busby area where he farmed for some years before settling in Pompeys Pillar. Finally as health declined, he and Tonnie moved to Ballantine; when their health failed completely, they entered Eagle Cliff Manor where they were both cared for with love and tenderness.

Ned enjoyed visiting with people; he laughed easily and often, his hazel eyes "twinkling."

He is survived by his and Tonnie's daughter, Iris Jean Chatham and son-in-law, John; six granddaughters, Debra (Mark) Gentry of Sheridan, Wyo., Kathie (Ken) Clinton of Billings, Johnette (Jerry) Cook of Rapid City, S.D., Tonnie Nedine Lackey of Rapid City, Valene (Chuck) Swanson of Huntley, and Victoria (Mark) Bush of Denton, Texas; nine great-grandchildren; five great-great-grandchildren; one niece; and one nephew.

Other than his parents, Ned was preceded in death by his wife, Tonnie; great-grandson, Robby Dust; and brother, Adrian.

"See you later Daddy and Mom."

Arrangements were made by Cremation or Funeral Gallery and Cremation Society of Montana. For anyone caring to send memorials, please give to the Alzheimer's Association, P.O. Box 8235, Chicago, IL 60680-8721. "This is such an awful, awful disease!"

Donald F. Gallagher
GLASGOW - Donald F. Gallagher, age 80, of Glasgow, passed away Feb. 8, 1999, at the Frances Mahon Deaconess Hospital in Glasgow.
A vigil service will be held Thursday, Feb. 11, 1999, at 7 p.m. at St. Raphael's Catholic Church in Glasgow. Funeral services will be held Friday, Feb. 12, 1999, at 9 a.m. at the church with the Rev. Thad Kozikowski officiating. Burial will be in the Highland cemetery in Glasgow. Bell Mortuary in Glasgow in charge of arrangements.

Donald was born Jan. 5, 1919, in West Union, Minn., to Edward T. and Hazel A. (Moore) Gallagher. He moved to Glasgow as a young child, and was raised and attended schools in Glasgow, graduating from Glasgow High School in 1937. He started working for his parents at the City Meat Market in 1937. Donald married Dorothy Christinson in 1939 in Glasgow. He served in the U.S. Navy during World War II and continued working at the City Meat Market until 1960 when he and his brother George opened the Gallagher's IGA Foodliner in 1960 which they operated until 1983. Dorothy passed away on Oct. 9, 1962. Donald married Bev Farrington on Jan. 9, 1975, in Glasgow.

Don was a green thumb and enjoyed his garden. He has received several Garden of the Week awards. He was an avid hunter and fisherman.

He was a member of the American Legion for 40 years, was a lifelong member of St. Raphael's Catholic Church, the KCCH, Lukes 100, the Glasgow Chamber of Commerce, and was a member of the Hospital Board for several years. He loved his family, loved his church, and he worked hard.

Survivors include his wife, Bev Gallagher of Glasgow; daughters, Judy and Dave Milliken of Memphis, Tenn., Sue and Dennis Garsjo of Glasgow, Patty and Milt Hallock of Glasgow; daughter-in-law, Barb Gallagher of Glasgow; stepdaughters, Florann Hanneson of Glasgow and Colleen and Rod McAlmond of Missoula; stepson, Dean and Maria Farrington of Alamogordo, N.M.; sister, Kathleen Shurtliff of Bellevue, Neb.; brothers, Francis and Bernadine Gallagher of Glasgow and George Gallagher of Glasgow; 18 grandchildren; nine great-grandchildren; and numerous nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by an infant son, and son, Gary "Butch" Gallagher; his parents; and a sister, Mae Bradley of Lake Tahoe, Calif.

Mary Lou Williams
LIVINGSTON - Mary Lou Williams, 46, of Livingston, died Monday morning, Feb. 8, 1999, at Madison Valley Manor in Ennis after a long and courageous battle with anorexia.
Family visitation was held Monday afternoon at Franzen-Davis Funeral Home in Livingston. Cremation has taken place. Memorial services will be 2 p.m. Wednesday, Feb. 10, in the funeral home chapel at 118 N. 3rd St. The Rev. Stephen Morris of St. Andrew's Episcopal Church will officiate. Arrangements are under the direction of Franzen-Davis Funeral Home and Cremation Service in Livingston.

Mary Lou was born March 30, 1952, in Livingston, the daughter of Harry T. and Mildred (Skaret) Williams Jr. She attended Livingston schools, graduating from Park High School in 1970. Following her graduation she worked for a time in the Livingston school administration offices. She then attended vocational-technical school in Bozeman for a year before returning to Livingston. She had worked as a secretary for First National Park Bank and the Park County Welfare Office.

Mary Lou loved animals and enjoyed walking. She was a very intelligent person and had a great sense of humor. She was a member of St. Andrew's Episcopal Church. All of her family feels a tremendous sense of loss at her death, but they know that she is now safe and in a better place.

Survivors include her parents, Harry and Mildred Williams of Livingston; her sister, Lynda Adkins and her husband, Ron of Billings; two brothers, John Williams and his wife, Sherry, and Jerry Williams and his wife, Marlene, all of Spokane, Wash.; six nephews, one niece and one grandnephew.

Memorials in Mary Lou's memory may be directed to St. Andrew's Episcopal Church, 3rd and Lewis Streets, Livingston, MT 59047.

Marie Big Hair
LODGE GRASS - Marie Big Hair, 68, of Lodge Grass died Saturday, Jan. 16, 1999 in the Big Horn County Memorial Hospital.
Ishbaashi'acheAhuush "Owns Plenty" was born April 12, 1930 in Wyola, a daughter of Frank and Jenny Bad Horse Covers Up. She grew up and attended schools in Wyola.

Marie was a traditional Crow woman, who enjoyed cultural activities, such as hand games and dancing. She was an excellent cook and homemaker.

She married Trunson Big Hair on Sept. 6, 1979.

Marie was a faithful member of the Catholic Church and Native American Church.

She was preceded in death by her parents; three brothers, Paul Bad Horse, Calvin Bell Rock and Frank Covers Up; two sisters, Evelyn Covers Up and Velma Gros Ventre; an aunt Jenny Morrison and an uncle, Leo Goodluck Sr.

Survivors include her husband, Trunson of Lodge Grass; three sons, Bernard (Delilah) Covers Up of Maryland, Manuel (Linda) Covers Up of Lodge Grass, Jack (Terrianne) Covers Up of Harlem, and a grandson who she raised as a son, Derek Big Hair of Lodge Grass; five daughters, Clarice (Ronnie) Medicine Crow, Sarah (Bernard) Jefferson, Margaret, Nathania and Arbutus Covers Up of Lodge Grass; an adopted son, Patrick Nomee of Lodge Grass; two brothers, Starr Not Afraid of Ft. Smith and Sylvan Chuck Brown of S.D.; four sisters, Theresa (Steve) Yapauncich of Wyola, Mae House of Dunmore, Mildred Old Crow and Virginia Covers Up of Lodge Grass; her aunt, Julia Black Eagle of Lodge Grass; three uncles Al, Ralph and Tex Good Luck of Lodge Grass; 29 grandchildren and 17 great grandchildren.

Rosary will be recited 4:30 p.m. Tuesday in the Bullis Funeral Chapel.

Funeral Mass will be celebrated 10 a.m. Wednesday in the Lodge Grass Our Lady of Loretto Catholic Church with Fr. Jim Antoine, celebrant. Rite of Committal will follow in the Lodge Grass cemetery. Bullis Mortuary of Hardin has been entrusted with the funeral arrangements.
