Svend, 86, died Wednesday evening, Feb. 17, at Roosevelt Memorial Nursing Home in Culbertson, where he had been resident since last Dec. 8.
Svend was born at Odense, Denmark, Jan. 22, 1913, the son of Carl and Marie (Jensen) Bertelsen. When he was 10 months old, the family came to America and settled in the Froid community. A farmer all his life, Svend attended schools through the 9th grade, but was well-educated, and largely self-taught. He always kept up with national, regional, local news and current events, which he enjoyed cussing and discussing at local coffee shops! Svend was an active member in his community, serving on many boards - Roosevelt Memorial Medical Center, Farmers Union Oil Company, Froid Credit Union, and the Farm Home Administration, and believed that others should do their part also. He was a Federal Crop Insurance agent and adjuster for many years, and for 13 years took a crew of "his renegades" custom combining.

Everyone remembers his rolling, infectious laugh as he teased his family and friends. He was a great Grandpa, whether visiting, teasing, or taking the kids fishing.

He married Winifred Wulf in 1937. During the Depression, he worked on farms in Iowa, as a carpenter for movie studios in California, and on the construction of Fort Peck Dam. He married Alma (Knutson) Slevin, Sept. 13, 1964, at Froid Lutheran Church. He loved to travel, and spent many winters in the Mesa, Ariz., area. Even though he turned the farming over to Roger, he kept his hand in, and was always available for advice?!! Although he thrived for a number of years after bypass surgery, he had been in declining health for several years.

Svend is survived by his wife, Alma of Froid; a son, Roger and his wife, Debbie of Froid; a daughter, Janis and her husband, Jerry Meidinger of Miles City; and by a brother, Verner and his wife Dorothea of Helena. Alma's family became his, as well: her sons, Jack Slevin and his wife, Robin of Helena, and Pat Slevin and his wife, Rosemary of Frazee, Minn.; and daughters, Sharon Bertelsen of Froid, and Lenore Daw of Columbus, Ohio, and their families. Svend has numerous grandchildren and great-grandchildren, and one great-great-grandson. He was preceded in death by his parents, and infant son, Ronnie; brothers, Hardin (as a child), Einar, Arne, and Gunner; and sisters, Karla Nielsen and Ruby Firstbrook; grandson, Billy Slevin and granddaughter, Wendy Slevin.
