Janice Hayes Lees
1947 - 1999
PARK CITY - Janice Hayes Lees, of Park City, formerly of Beaver Dam (Ohio County), Ky., died Thursday, Feb. 18, 1999, at Deaconess Medical Center, Billings, of complications following pneumonia.
Mrs. Lees was born April 2, 1947, a daughter of Albert Lee and Louise Curtis Hayes.

She was a member of the Park City Baptist Church and at the time of her death was instrumental in working with her husband to establish a prison ministry affiliated with Chuck Colson Prison Ministries in Billings.

Surviving are her husband, Cecil Stratton (Teek) Lees of Park City; one brother, Terry Hayes, wife, Janet, and son, Brandon of Bowling Green, Ky.; four sisters: Mary Wallace and son, Mitchell; Peggy Swearer and husband, Gary, and son, Mark Hayes; Brenda Mercer and sons, Keith and Kenneth Mercer, and daughter, Kimberly Hayes and her daughter, McKinley; Betty Hayes and her daughter, Christy, all of Henderson, Ky.

Funeral services will be conducted at 2 p.m. Sunday, Feb. 21, at Park City Baptist Church.

Additional services will be held at Bill Danks Funeral Home, Beaver Dam, and Tracy Brammer Funeral Home in Ironton, Ohio, with interment in Sugar Creek cemetery, Hecla, Ohio.

Thomas Gerald Thompson
GLENDIVE - Thomas Gerald Thompson, 73, of Glendive, died Feb. 18, 1999, at the Veterans Administration Medical Center in Sheridan, Wyo. Silvernale-Silha Funeral Home of Glendive is entrusted with arrangements.
Tom was born on April 26, 1925, in Parkers Prairie, Minn., the son of Raymond Andrew and Gladys Irene (Booen) Thompson. He attended rural Parkers Prairie school, graduating in 1938. He entered the U.S. Army on Dec. 19, 1945, and served with the 1st Squad 8th Cavalry during WWII. Tom was honorably discharged on Feb. 19, 1947. Tom married Noreen Mary Miller on Oct. 15, 1947, in Wadena, Minn. Tom attended the Dakota Business College in Fargo, N.D., where he graduated in 1950. He and his wife moved to Glendive in 1951 where he worked as an accountant for Williston Basin Pipeline. They had made their home in Glendive since that time. Tom was preceded in death by his wife in June of 1998. Tom was a past commander of the Veterans of Foreign Wars Post #1125 in Glendive and had also served as the post and district commander of the American Legion Post.

Survivors include four sons, Craig J. Thompson of Havre, Michael A. Thompson of Wibaux, and Robin D. Thompson and Kevin J. Thompson, both of Glendive; one daughter, Susan R. Adams of Livingston; one sister, Fern B. Griener of Woodside, Minn.; 12 grandchildren and three great-grandchildren. Tom was preceded in death by his parents; one son, Thomas G. Thompson Jr.; and three brothers.

No funeral services are planned.

Mark Anthony Holte
Mark Anthony Holte, 43 of Billings, died Monday, Feb. 1, 1999, at Deaconess Hospital.
Mark was born March 22, 1955, in Wolf Point. He graduated from Billings Senior High and earned his certification as a machinist at Bellingham, Wash., Vo-Tec.

He is survived by his daughter, Casey Jean Leeper of Billings; mother, Marjorie Burkitt and stepdad, Bill of Bellingham; father and stepmother, Duane and Sarah Holte of Billings; brothers, Steven Holte and his wife, Paula, and two nieces and one nephew of Poplar, and Paul Holte of Bellingham; and his grandparents, Ruth and Edgar Bowers of Culbertson.

Memorial services will be 2 p.m. Thursday at Evangelical United Methodist Church.

Memorials may be made to Rimrock Foundation.

Michelotti, Sawyers & Nordquist has charge of arrangements.

Amanda Garza
CALDWELL, Idaho - Amanda Garza, age 26, of Caldwell, passed away Tuesday, Jan. 26, 1999, of injuries sustained in a car accident.
Amanda was born on May 20, 1972, to Albert Garza and Lupe Sanchez in Idaho Falls. She attended Orchard and Lockwood Elementary in Billings and finished her schooling in Idaho Falls.

She was preceded in death by her mother and grandparents. She is survived by her children, Dominga and Raul of Mexico City; her father of Billings; brothers, Geronimo of Idaho Falls, Albert, Jim, Miguel of Billings, Steve of Long Beach, and Jeff of Washington; her sister, Christine Boyer of Billings; aunts, Adella and Fidella of Idaho Falls, Janie of Atlanta, Sara of Texas, Maria of Logan, Marianne of Fort Worth, Florentina of Chicago, Hope of Hysham, and Janie of Billings; her uncles, Pete of Salt Lake, Paul of Helena, Frank of Fort Worth, Pete of Missoula, and Harold of Billings. Also survived by six nieces, seven nephews and several cousins.

We love you, and will miss you dearly Amanda.

Cremation has taken place and a memorial service will be held on Monday, Feb. 8, at 1 p.m. at Our Lady of Guadalupe.

Michael G. Copping
Michael G. Copping, age 39, of Billings, died on Saturday, Jan. 30, 1999, at St. Vincent's Hospital in Billings.
Memorial services will be held at 2 p.m. Thursday, Feb. 4, 1999, at the United Methodist Church in Glendive with Pastors Carter and Myrna Havner officiating. Silvernale-Silha Funeral Home of Glendive is entrusted with arrangements.

Mike was born on June 15, 1959, in Glendive, the son of Chuck and Delores (Helvik) Copping. After graduating from Dawson County High School, he worked mostly in the oil fields in Montana and North Dakota as a driller. Mike also worked in construction locally and in Texas, Nevada, and Arizona and at Berg's Tire Shop in Glendive. In 1987 he was diagnosed with an interstitial lung disease which required him to be on oxygen for the remainder of his life. Mike never complained and despite the strain remained self-sufficient. He inspired and amazed us with his positive attitude in spite of the physical limitations the disease caused. He graduated from Eastern Montana College (now MSU-Billings) in May of 1994.

Mike loved fishing and hiking in the mountains and in the last few years was able to continue this love with the help of his four-wheeler. He also enjoyed playing and listening to bluegrass music He was appointed by the governor to serve on two councils that try to help people who are in need of assistance. At the time of his death, he was still a member of both councils - Independent Living and Vocational Rehabilitation.

Survivors include his parents, Chuck and Delores Copping of Glendive; one brother, Clint Copping and his wife, Yvonne of Gillette, Wyo.; his grandmother, Dorothy Dvorak of Glendive; his uncle, Deane Copping of Glendive; his aunt, Katherine Hardie of Cheney, Wash.; nephews, John Copping of Gillette, and Jason Copping of Kalispell; and one niece, Breanna Copping of Kalispell.

Memorials are suggested to the Dawson Community College Foundation, P.O. Box 421, Glendive, Mont. 59330.

William G. McCuin
William G. McCuin, 72, of Billings, died Sunday, April 18, 1999, at home of natural causes. He was born in Saco, a son of Edwin Walter and Alma Elizabeth Garrison McCuin and attended schools in Saco and Malta and served in the U.S. Army in 1945.
Bill married Irene Whiteford in Havre, June 29, 1953. He worked as a ranch hand in the Malta area and moved to Billings in 1975 where he drove livestock trucks for nearly 30 years. Bill loved to knit and donated many knitted items to Family Services. Memorials may be made in his name to Family Services.

Survivors include his wife, Irene; seven children; 11 grandchildren and two great-grandsons; five brothers and a sister. He was preceded in death by his daughter.

Memorial will be 1 p.m. Friday at Cremation or Funeral Gallery's new mortuary at 29 8th St. W.

Winifred A. Rumsey
CULBERTSON - Winifred A. Rumsey, 75, of Culbertson, died on April 16, 1999, at the Roosevelt Memorial Nursing Home in Culbertson.
Winifred was born Dec. 16, 1923, in York, Pa., the daughter of John H. and Sadie Krall. She was raised in York County and attended schools there, graduating in 1942 from high school in East Berlin, Pa. She worked for six months at the McCay Chain Co. at York. On July 24, 1943, she married Warren Rumsey in Maryland and they lived in York County until January of 1944.

They moved to San Antonio, Texas, and lived there until December of 1944 and then moved to Enid, Okla., for a short time and then back to York in 1945. On April 20, 1946, they moved to Culbertson and have lived there ever since.

After her husband's retirement they enjoyed RV living and traveled extensively through the southern states during the winter months. Winifred was a charter member of the Roosevelt Memorial Hospital Guild, and an American Legion Auxiliary member of 48 years. She enjoyed needle work, making lots of quilts. and crocheting.

Survivors include her husband of Culbertson; a son, Richard of Culbertson; a sister, Elizabeth Hull, of York, Pa; three grandchildren: Tom and (Holly) of Watertown, N.Y., Chris of Battle Mountain, Nev., Abe of Culbertson; and one great-grandchild, Jennifer of Watertown, N.Y.

She was preceded in death by her parents and a sister.

Visitations will be held on Wednesday, April 21, from 2 to 8 p.m. at the Everson-Clayton Memorial Chapel in Culbertson. Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. on Thursday, April 22, at the Trinity Lutheran Church in Culbertson with Rev. Alvin Beyer of Culbertson officiating. Interment will be in Hillside cemetery.

Everson-Clayton Memorial Chapel is in charge of arrangements.

James F. Rogers
HARDIN - James F. Rogers, 77, of Hardin died Sunday, April 18, 1999, in the Big Horn County Memorial Hospital.
He was born Sept. 7, 1921, in Lewistown, a son of Chester and Lena Rogers. He attended schools in Musselshell and graduated from Hardin High School in 1939. Following his education, he enlisted in the U.S. Army Air Corps and served with the 426th Night Fighter Squadron as radar observer during the China offensive. He later received his Honorable Discharge. Following his discharge, he returned to Montana to farm with his father and brother in the North valley. Jim served as Big Horn County Deputy Sheriff in 1953 with Roy Riley.

Jim married Anna Belle Clawson on Nov. 20, 1947, in Hardin. In 1957, he and his family moved to California to work for the Allis Chalmers Corp. He retired after 30 years and returned to Hardin. Jim served for three terms on the Hardin City Council and was a member of the City-County Planning Board. He often drove school bus for the Hardin school system and was known as "Grandpa" by the kids.

He was a member of the Elks Lodge # 2215 and had served as president of the Montana AAU Boxing Association and trainer for the Big Horn County Boxing Team. He loved to fish and hunt, often to the delight of his children.

Jim was preceded in death by two brother, George and Charles.

Survivors include his wife Anna Belle of Hardin; two sons, George (Michele) Rogers of Hardin, and Loren Rogers of California; one daughter, Nan (Floyd) Ford of Texas; one brother, Chester (Helen) Rogers of California; one sister, Edith Salveson of Billings; a sister-in-law, Gretchen Haynie of Custer; seven grandchildren and two great-grandchildren and numerous nieces and nephews.

Cremation has taken place. Memorial Funeral services will be held 2 p.m. Thursday in the First Congregational Church. Private interment of the ashes will follow at a later date in the Fairview cemetery. Bullis Mortuary of Hardin has been entrusted with the arrangements.

Should friends desire, memorial contributions may be made to the Shrine Transportation Fund or to the charity of one's choice.

Loretta Shappee Cochrane
POLSON - Loretta Shappee Cochrane, 91, of Polson, formerly of Billings, passed away at St. Luke Extended Care Center, Ronan, on Friday, April 16, 1999, from natural causes.
Lory was born July 13, 1907, in Philadelphia, Pa., to Mary Shea and Michael Shappee. As a young girl she lived with her family and attended Roman Catholic schools in Philadelphia. After attending business college, she was employed by a chain store in New Haven, Conn. There she met and married Bert Cochrane, another store employee, on March 2, 1929. Their only child, Albert Jr., was born in 1930 at New Haven. The family then moved to Dorchester, Mass., where Bert became store manager.

Lory was always a loving partner to her husband, and devoted mother to her son, Al. In 1939 the family moved to Dearborn, Mich., where Bert joined the personnel department of the Ford Motor Co. During World War II, Lory worked as a Red Cross Grey Lady and later, at the Ford Bomber Plant handing out tools.

After WWII the family moved West to Billings and then in 1950 to Dillon where Bert became a partner and later owner of the Ford dealership there.

They returned to Billings in 1959 where Bert worked for his brother at Archie Cochrane Ford. He retired in 1974 and died at Billings in 1989.

In 1994, son Al moved Lory to a home in Polson and later to St. Luke Extended Care in Ronan.

Survivors include her son, Al and wife, Garene of Bigfork, and four grandsons, Retired Air Force Lt. Col. Mike Cochrane of Yorktown, Va., Jeff, Billings, and John, Renton, Wash., and Tim, Kirkland, Wash., and five great-grandchildren.

Burial will be 2 p.m. Friday, April 23, in Mountview cemetery, Billings, next to her beloved husband, with Rev. Jerry Jasmer, Episcopal priest and family friend officiating. Family suggests memorials to donor's choice in lieu of flowers. Services will be under the direction of Grogan Funeral Home, Polson.

Gwendolyn Meidinger Mayer
WOLF POINT - Gwendolyn Meidinger Mayer passed away Sunday morning, April 18, after a courageous fight with cancer at Northwest Hospice in Seattle at the age of 52.
Gwen was born in Glasgow on May 31, 1946, the daughter of Herman and Eva Grotte. She was the third of six children. She attended schools in Wolf Point, graduating from Wolf Point High School in 1964.

In June of 1964, she was married to Richard Meidinger of Wolf Point. The years of their marriage were spent in Wolf Point, Billings, and Fargo, N.D. They were blessed with two sons. She was later divorced and moved back to Wolf Point where she married Matthew Mayer.

Gwen enjoyed her work in the banking industry where she was employed at various banks over the past 17 years. Prior to her banking experience she was a full-time mother and homemaker. Among her favorite things to do were spending time with her family, caring for her numerous pets, and taking walks. She was a loving mother and devoted friend who maintained a strong faith in God and she will be missed by all those whose lives she has touched.

Gwen is survived by her two sons, Robbie of Enumclaw, Wash., and Greg of Edmonds, Wash.; her ex-husband, Richard of Kent, Wash.; her mother and stepfather, Eva and Walter Johnson of Wolf Point; a brother, David "Butch" Grotte and his wife, JoEllen of Sheridan, Wyo.; four sisters, Marlene Gerberding of Billings, Beverly Evans and her husband, Warren, Teresa Neutgens and her husband, John, and Phyllis Douglas and her husband, Sonny, all of Wolf Point; along with 12 nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her father, Herman Grotte, and her husband, Matthew Mayer.

At her request, cremation has taken place.

A vigil service will be held at 5 p.m. on Thursday, April 22, at the Clayton Memorial Chapel in Wolf Point. Funeral services will be held at 10 a.m. on Friday, April 23, at the Immaculate Conception Church in Wolf Point with Rev. Fr. Steve Zabrocki officiating. Interment will be in Greenwood cemetery in Wolf Point.

In lieu of flowers, please send remembrances to the American Cancer Society, Humane Society or a memorial of your choice.

Frieda I. Lowery
MOORE - Frieda I. Lowery, 82, of Moore, died Sunday afternoon at the Central Montana Skilled Nursing Center of natural causes. She was born Aug. 26, 1916, in Rocky Ford, Alberta, Canada, the daughter of Carl and Frieda Schulz. She received her education in Bridgeport, Neb., and completed Beauty School.
She moved to Harlowton and in the late 1930s she was united in marriage to Maurice Martin there. They owned and operated the Montana Hotel until his death in 1966. She continued to operate the hotel and opened a gift shop in the hotel also. On June 13, 1976, she was united in marriage to Glen Lowery in Harlowton. They operated the hotel and gift shop for about one year, they then sold the business and moved to Moore.

He preceded her in death in 1980. She continued to live in Moore until November of 1998 when she entered the Skilled Nursing Center.

Frieda enjoyed hunting, fishing, playing cards, collecting and restoring antiques and was accomplished at fly tying.

Her parents, two brothers and two sisters preceded her in death.

Several nieces and nephews survive her.

Funeral Services for Frieda I. Lowery will be Thursday at 2 p.m. in the Cloyd Chapel with interment to follow in the Harlowton cemetery. The Cloyd Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

Friends may make memorials to the Moore Women's Club, Moore Methodist Church or the charity of their choice and they may be left at the Cloyd Funeral Home.
