Howard E. Carver
WORLAND, Wyo. - Howard E. Carver, 76, died Friday, March 12, 1999, at Washakie Memorial Hospital in Worland.
Services will be at 2 p.m. Tuesday, March 16, at the Grace Chapel Community Church in Worland. Inurnment will be at a later date. Veile Mortuary in charge of arrangements.

Elizabeth 'Shorty' Smith
DRUMMOND - Elizabeth "Shorty" Smith, 78, died Thursday, March 11, 1999, at her home in Drummond.
She was born in 1921 in Park City to George and Mary Lucille Hedges, the youngest of four children. A cowboy named Red came to town and roped her up in 1938. Harold "Red" and Shorty worked at various ranches until they could purchase their own ranch west of Drummond in 1958.

Shorty did a lot of cooking for crews and baking for everyone. She was active in the Senior Citizens and was a member of the Mayflower Descendants Society. She is survived by four daughters and son-in-laws: Nadene and Jim Harris of Benton City, Wash., Linda Smith of Drummond, Mary and Ron Duram of Eureka, Patty and Harvey Emerson of Kennewick, Wash.; one sister Ruby Roske of Missoula; 11 grandchildren and 30 great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her husband, son Neil, brother "Huck", sister Eula, grandson Eric and great-grandson Jason.

Memorial services will be Monday, March 15, at 10 a.m. at the Drummond Methodist Church, with burial at the Park City cemetery at 6 p.m.

Memorials may be made to the Shodair Children's Hospital or donors choice. Jewell Funeral Home in charge of arrangements.

Aldus 'Al' Syverson
On Jan. 12, 1926, in Twin Valley, Minn., Aldus Vernal Syverson was born, the third of seven sons of Oscar and Clara Jenzer Syverson. He died March 12, 1999, in his home.
In 1937, the family moved from Twin Valley to Ulen, Minn., where they ran the family dairy farm. Al enlisted in the Navy during WW II and was assigned to duty on a subchaser specializing in radio communication.

Following the war, Al took advantage of the G.I. Bill ("the best thing I ever did") and received training in mechanics at the Spartan School of Aeronautics in Tulsa, Okla. After graduation, he gained employment with Northwest Orient Airlines, where for 35 years, he "worked with some of the finest people around doing the one job he loved most - fixing planes."

In 1949, Al and Viola Fandel were married in Tulsa, Okla. Together they raised their three children, Carol, Sharon and Wayne. They took great pleasure and pride in their three grandchildren, Aaron, Tara and Allison. Vi died in 1994 after 44 years of marriage.

In his final years, Al shared his life with a special friend and companion, Frannie MacDonald. Together they would spend quiet time talking or taking rides in the country. They also took great pleasure visiting with friends at the Senior Citizen's luncheon sites and at the VFW Post 6774, where Al held the office of Commander for one year.

Survivors include his special friend, Frannie MacDonald, his three children and their families; Carol Green and her children, Aaron and Allison; Sharon Hudson, her husband John, and daughter Tara; and Wayne Syverson and his wife Patty; his six brothers, Clinton and Penny, Shelvin and Gladys, Wally, Lowell and Betty, Dean and Bonnie, and John and Diane; as well as numerous nieces and nephews and his special "girls", Kitty Cat and Snookums, his pet cats. He was preceded in death by his wife Viola and his parents.

Visitation will be held 2 to 9 p.m. Sunday and 8 a.m. to 9 p.m. Monday at Michelotti, Sawyers and Nordquist, 1001 Alderson Ave. Funeral services will be held 11 a.m. Tuesday, March 16, at Michelotti, Sawyers and Nordquist with interment with military honors in Mountview cemetery. Memorials may be sent to Big Sky Hospice, P.O. Box 35033, Billings, MT 59107.

Helen Blevins Nordwick
POPLAR - Helen Blevins Nordwick, after a long illness, died of natural causes on Wednesday, March 10, 1999, in the Poplar Community Hospital in Poplar. She was born Sept. 29, 1930, to Earle Blevins and Marcella Etzel Blevins. She graduated at the top of her class from Poplar High School. Most of her life was spent as a homemaker and mother.
She was preceded in death by her mother, father, brother (Joe), son (William), daughter (Helene) and son (Earl). She was married for 28 years to Ellis (John) Nordwick and mother to 12 children.

Helen is survived by nine children and 19 grandchildren as follows: son, John, spouse, Gwyn McAnally, and their children, DeAnna, Bill, and Brian; daughter, Kay, and spouse, Bob Nelsen, and their children, Nanette, Crystal and Carter; son, Bruce, spouse, Mary Red Dog, and children, Lori Jo, Rian Lee, and Brace; daughter, LeAnn, spouse, Frank Kenney, and child, Christopher; son, Tom, spouse, Jill Jensen, children, Shawna, Spencer, and Steven; daughter, Mary, spouse, Todd DeWire, and children, Todd and John; daughter, Joedy, spouse, Jack Fields, and children, Jordan and Jacob; daughter, Marcie and child, Brianna; and son, Joe, spouse, Susan Reinfuss, and child, Ben.

Helen was a testimony to a strong faith in Jesus. She enjoyed her family, theater, listening to music, playing cards, and when she was able, dancing. She was an inspiration to her family and friends.

Visitations will be held on Sunday, March 14, from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. at the Clayton Memorial Chapel in Wolf Point and from 2:30 to 8:30 p.m. at the Our Lady of Lourdes Catholic Church in Poplar with a vigil service at 7 p.m. at the church. Funeral services will be celebrated at 10 a.m. on Monday, March 15, at the Our Lady of Lords Catholic Church with Rev. Fr. Robert Fox officiating. Interment will be in the Poplar cemetery. Clayton Memorial Chapel is in charge of arrangements.

Geraldine L. Carpenter
LAUREL - Geraldine L. Carpenter, 88, beloved mother and grandmother, passed away Thursday, March 11, 1999, at St. Vincent Hospital in Billings.
Geraldine was preceded in death by a daughter, Mary Jo Peterson; her husband, Clark Carpenter; a grandson, Kevin Jackson; and 11 brothers and sisters.

Survivors include Roger and Cherianne Jackson of Missoula; Karen and Conway Barlow of Carson City, Nev.; Monte and Arlene Supola of Billings; and Barbara Hoppel of Laurel; and many grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

Daily Mass, the Sacraments, and the Rosary were of utmost importance to Geraldine. She always said her day was not complete unless she attended Mass. She will be greatly missed.

Vigil Services will be held at 7 p.m. Sunday, March 14, at St. Anthony Catholic Church in Laurel. Memorial Mass will be held at 10 a.m. Monday, March 15, at St. Anthony Catholic Church. Memorials may be made to: St. Patrick's Home Bound Bus Ministry, 215 N. 31st, Billings, Mont. 59101, or St. Anthony Catholic Church, Box 955, Laurel, Mont. 59044. Smith Funeral Chapel of Laurel is in charge of arrangements.

Cora Lee McDonnell
Cora Lee McDonnell, 70, of Billings died March 9, 1999, at Deaconess Medical Center after a long battle with pulmonary fibrosis.
She was born June 23, 1928, in Fairview, to Glen and Ina (Hunter) Richardson. She grew up on a farm near Fairview and graduated from Fairview High School in 1946. She received a bachelor of science and master's degree in nursing from Montana State University in Bozeman.

She worked as a registered nurse in numerous hospitals in Montana, Wyoming and Washington, and over her career worked in surgery, the emergency room, delivery, nursery, rehabilitation and psychiatric wards. She returned to school and received a Post Masters Degree in Public Health from the University of Seattle.

In the 1960s, she worked for Yellowstone County Health Department as a public health nurse establishing free clinics for the community and school systems and conducting physical assessments on school children.

In 1969, Cora Lee moved to Bozeman and worked as a registered nurse once again. She retired from nursing in 1976 and earned her Family Health Nurse Practitioners Certificate the following year. She was a coordinator for the Montana Department of Health on a community health project to enlist volunteer nurses in rural Montana counties.

Cora Lee worked as a family health nurse practitioner for insurance companies when she retired in 1986 and moved back to Billings.

Cora Lee married Terence McDonnell on June 4, 1955, in Livingston. She loved learning, caring for people, church, her grandchildren, cooking and taking pictures. One of her fondest memories was her travel to Europe in 1984 with her mother. While in England, they attended the play "Singing in the Rain" at one of London's grand theaters.

Cora Lee was preceded in death by her parents and her brothers, William and Robert.

She is survived by a brother, Don Richardson of Thermopolis, Wyo.; two sons, Tom McDonnell and wife, Michelle of Castle Rock, Colo., Tim McDonnell and wife, Cindy of Red Lodge, and one daughter, Terrie Kenison and her husband, Ernie of Helena; six granddaughters and numerous nieces and nephews.

"We all Miss You Cora Lee and will always remember the love you brought to our lives."

Memorial services will be 4 p.m. Saturday, March 13, at the Smith West Chapel, 304 34th St. W. Cremation has taken place and interment of her cremains will be in Thermopolis at a later date. Memorials to Easter Seals.

Fern Wolfe
BELFRY - Fern Wolfe, 81, of Belfry, died Thursday, March 11, 1999, in Billings Deaconess Medical Center of complications following heart by-pass surgery.
Fern was born on Dec. 4, 1917, in Teton, Idaho, a daughter of Ella and Leo Howard. She attended elementary school in Teton until her family moved to Pryor Creek in 1932. She graduated from Belfry High School in 1936, and was married to Lawrence Wolfe that same year.

Fern and Lawrence farmed and ranched in the Belfry area from the time of their marriage until Mr. Wolfe's death in 1982. Fern resided in Belfry until 1997 when she moved to Cedar Wood Villa in Red Lodge.

She served as a volunteer 4-H leader, LDS Sunday school teacher, and volunteer kindergarten teacher. Fern was instrumental in establishing both the Belfry Extension Homemakers and Belfry Pioneer Days. In 1995 she was honored as grand marshal of the Pioneer Day parade. Fern also served as the Belfry correspondent for the Carbon County News and the Montana Free Press.

Fern's greatest loves were her family, grandchildren and great-grandchildren, her community and her church. She took great pride in her outstanding cooking and flower gardening. Her joy came from sharing wonderful meals and the beauty of her flowers with family and friends, and her community involvement.

Survivors include two daughters, Gerry Bakich and husband, Mily of Belfry, and Joy Boche of Billings; two sons, Terry and wife, Linda Wolfe of Bozeman, and Rod and wife, Becky of Billings; one sister, Vera Newbold of Ashton, Idaho; 11 grandchildren and six great-grandchildren.

Fern was preceded in death by her husband, Lawrence; one sister, Lola Ewing; and two brothers, Cleo and Grant Howard.

Funeral services will be held at 10 a.m. Monday, March 15, in the Belfry Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. Interment will be in the Belfry cemetery, with the Olcott Funeral Chapel of Red Lodge in charge of arrangements.

Memorials may be given to the Belfry Senior Citizens Center, the Kiwanis Circle K Ranch, or to the Montana 4-H Foundation, Taylor Hall, MSU, Bozeman, MT 59717.

Elmer O. Sampson
Elmer O. Sampson, 58, passed away peacefully in his home on the morning of March 10, 1999, after a courageous five-year battle with cancer.
Elmer was born Oct. 29, 1940, in Billings. He was a loving father, brother and friend, always ready to lend a hand. He enjoyed fishing, hunting and Bingo.

He is survived by an uncle, Fred Fox of Laurel; a brother, Robert (Sharon) Sampson of Billings; a sister, Mary (Lyle) Hurt of Billings; five children, Elmer Sampson Jr. of Great Falls, Tim (Melody) Sampson of Pierre, S.D., Cheryl (Glen) Minkle of Everett, Wash., Cindy (Thom) Javier of Bremerton, Wash., Pauline (Chad) Whiteaker of Billings; four stepchildren, Mark Sweet of Helena, Leanne Sweet of Everett, Jackie Hledik of Billings, Jason Hledik of the Philippines; 14 grandchildren and numerous nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Mary Agnes, and parents.

Vigil Services to be held at 7 p.m. Sunday, March 14; funeral Mass at 10 a.m. Monday, March 15, both at Our Lady of Guadalupe in Billings.

A special thanks to Big Sky Hospice and those who helped to make his last days peaceful through prayers and deeds.

A benefit dinner to be held 11:30-5 p.m. Sunday, March 14, at Little Flower Church.

Christine Hammond
ABSAROKEE - Christine Winifred Hammond, 97, passed away March 9, 1999, in her home in Absarokee. Christine was born Dec. 29, 1901, in Frinton, England, to Harry and Ada Mann.
Raised in England with a large number of siblings, Christine made her way to the United States permanently after becoming engaged to Hugh Haskins, a ranchhand from Montana. They were married June 19, 1930, in Miles City and had seven children before moving to the Hines Ranch near Rapelje. In 1957, Hugh died, and after continuing on the ranch for a couple more years, Christine moved to Absarokee.

On July 15, 1964, she married Edwin Hammond and they remained in the Absarokee area until their deaths.

Christine will be remembered as a strong-willed, grand little lady, who despite her proper upbringing truly enjoyed the ways of the west, and adapted quite easily into any situation in which she found herself. She appreciated a good card game and a hearty laugh, was happy to share the stories of her past with her grandchildren and great-grandchildren, and looked forward to each spring, eagerly awaiting the blooms of the wild crocus. Her presence will be sorely missed.

Christine leaves behind one sister, Nora Tuck of Oxford, England; four daughters, Mary (Jim) Campbell of Roseburg, Ore., Doris (Tom) Grass of Ione, Wash., Muriel Nelson of Park City and Esther (Gaylord) Potts of Columbus, and one son, Kenneth Haskins of Prescott, Arizona. She. also leaves 15 grandchildren and numerous great-grandchildren, nieces and nephews.

Christine was preceded in death by her parents and several brothers and sisters; husbands, Hugh and Edwin; and sons, Lewis Haskins and David Haskins.

Funeral services will be held at 10 a.m. Monday, March 15, 1999, at Grace Fellowship in Absarokee. Viewing will be from 1-9 p.m. Sunday, March 14, at Smith Funeral Chapel in Columbus.

Memorials may be made to the charity of one's choice. Smith Funeral Chapel of Columbus is in charge of arrangements.

Richard L. Degele
Feb. 6, 1947-March 9, 1999
DENVER- Richard L. Degele, born Feb. 6, 1947, in Billings, son of Anton A. and Emma M. Degele, died March 9, 1999, in Denver, where he lived for 11 years.
Richard enlisted in the Army on Nov. 18, 1966. After basic training his enlistment was spent in Vietnam. He was honorably discharged on Aug. 20, 1968.

During his time with us he loved hunting, fishing and his family. He worked construction and was a cement finisher by trade.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Anton and Emma Degele. Surviving is his wife, Bernie; four stepsons, Richard Webster of Memphis, Tenn., Michael Webster (Patti) of Billings, James Webster (Vickie) of Denver, Jordy Webster (Sheila) of Billings, and stepdaughter, Kim Curtiss (Mark) of Billings; seven grandchildren, Kayla, Michael, Patryk, Nathan, Brita, Morgan, Jason.

Richard is also survived by two sisters, Barbara (Lee) Downing of Billings, Shirley (Robert) Lizotte of Laurel, Mont.; four brothers, Anton of Denver, George of Butte, Mont., Roy (Mary Helen) of Billings, Larry (Cindy) of Laurel; four nieces, Justine, Tina, Melissa, Michelle, and one nephew, Joshua; four aunts and one uncle.

Burial will take place in Bridger, Mont., at Bridger cemetery, March 16, 1999, at 2 p.m. with military services performed by the Bridger VFW.
