Darrel W. Anderson
HAMILTON - Darrel W. Anderson, age 64, of Hamilton, passed away on March 23, 1999, at St. Patrick Hospital in Missoula. He was born in Pierre, S.D., on April 20, 1934, to Harry and Barbara Oberstaller Anderson. He was raised and educated in Rapid City, S.D., where he graduated from high school in 1953. He enlisted in the U.S. Army following graduation and was honorably discharged in 1956.
Darrel was a heating and air conditioning contractor. He was the owner of Western Service in Greybull, Wyo., and Cody, Wyo., and Engineered Air Co. in Phoenix, Ariz. He retired to the Bitterroot Valley in 1981. He was a Life Member of the Greybull Elks Lodge No. 1431 and a member of Fraternal Order of Eagles Aerie No. 1693.

He is survived by eight children: Dawn Sabo of Gering, Neb.; Darla Anderson of Greybull; Darcy Trenkle of Casper, Wyo.; Jackie Harrington of Springerville, Ariz.; Julie Gillespie of Glendale, Ariz.; David Anderson, Hope Anderson and Darrin Anderson, all of Corvallis; sister, Delores and husband, Kenneth Hamm of Rapid City; brother, Harry and wife, Arlene Anderson of Sebastian, Fla.; 13 grandchildren; numerous cousins, nieces and nephews; as well as many friends.

He was preceded in death by his mother and father; one brother, David L. Anderson; and one grandson, Tige Good.

A memorial service was held Friday, March 26, at the Daly-Leach Chapel in Hamilton with the Rev. Dan Scarrow officiating. Urn placement with military honors will be held at 11 a.m. on Monday, March 29, at Black Hills National cemetery in Sturgis, S.D.

James "Sandy" Ponce Sr.
SEATTLE, Wash. - Sandy age 69, passed away March 25, 1999, due to heart failure. Sandy was born in Austin, Texas, on Nov. 27, 1929, the son of Frank and Rosa (Cantu) Ponce. He took great pride in his appearance which made him quite the "lady's" man. He was well liked and will be greatly missed by all that knew him and especially his family who dearly love him.
He was preceded in death by his parents, two brothers and a sister: Jennie Quintana.

Visitation will be 7 p.m. to 9 p.m. Tuesday, March 30, at Affordable Alternative Cremation and Burial Services, 2202 Central Ave. Funeral Mass will be 10 a.m. Wednesday, March 31, at Our Lady of Guadalupe Church. Father Paul Reichling will be the celebrant. Rite of committal at Holy Cross cemetery.

Sandy is survived by his beloved son James D. Ponce Jr. and his wife Marlene "Perez" Ponce; grandsons, James, Brian and Joey; two brothers: Richard (Pepa) Ponce of Oregon; Joe (Linda) Ponce of Billings; five sisters: Lena Gonzales of Omaha, Neb.; Alice Marquez, Katie (Jesse) Cuellar, Sally (Sal) Maciel, Helen (Francis) Fisher all of Billings; and an adopted brother Jesse Garza.

Sandy also leaves behind two special friends: Anthony Ledesma and Antonio Martinez.

"It broke our hearts to lose you, but you didn't go alone. A part of us went with you, the day God took you home. A million times we missed you, and million times we cried. If love could have saved you, you never would have died. To the grave we travel, the flowers are placed with care. No one knows the heartache as we turn to leave you there. If tears could build a stairway and heartaches make a lane, we would walk a path to heaven and bring you back."

David A. Olson
David A. Olson, 54, of Billings, died Wednesday, Feb. 17, 1999, at his home.
The son of Howard and Verle Olson, David was born Jan. 27, 1945, in Spokane, Wash. He grew up hunting and fishing at Kettle Falls, Wash. After high school David attended the School of Mines in Butte.

He married Connie Cox in Wenatchee, Wash., in 1979.

David had worked 30 years for the Burlington Northern-Santa Fe Railroad. He was a telecommunications maintenance manager.

David was a computer genius, and he enjoyed skiing and hang gliding.

Survivors include two children, Carrie Beth Olson and Gus Olson of Billings; his father, Howard of Billings; three brothers, Eric of Billings, Howard of Denver, and Bob of Sioux City, Iowa; and a sister, Catherine Olson Carroll of Billings.

Funeral services will be 2 p.m. Saturday at Michelotti, Sawyers & Nordquist Mortuary with interment in Sunset Memorial Gardens.

Memorials may be made to the American Heart Association.

Rudy Grossman Sr.
Rudy Grossman Sr., 86, of Billings, passed away Feb. 17, 1999, at the Western Manor Care Center. He was born Sept. 7, 1912, at Dodge, N.D. He was the son of Cristina Koch and William Grossman Sr.
On Jan. 3, 1943, he married Sylvia Jacquline Bassett in Cape Cod, Mass. They met at the USO and they were sweethearts of the USO. He farmed in Hardin and opened the Midget Bar there. He was a member of the DAV and the American Legion.

His favorite pastime was working with antiques.

Survivors include his wife; one daughter, Judy (Phil) Staudinger and a son, Rudolph Grossman Jr. (Vicky); three grandsons, Rudy III (RisC), Philip Staudinger III (Misty) and Dustin Grossman (Jennifer); one great-grandson, Wyatt Grossman; and one brother, John Grossman. Rudy was preceded in death by his parents; two brothers, William Grossman and George Grossman; and one sister, Ruth Miller.

A private graveside memorial service will be held at Terrace Gardens cemetery with military rites. Cremation has taken place at Smith's Crematory.

Violet Evangeline Perkins
HARDIN - Violet Evangeline Perkins, 79, of Hardin passed away Wednesday, Feb. 17, 1999, in the Big Horn County Memorial Hospital.
She was born Jan. 19, 1920, in Mott, N.D., a daughter of Ralph and Emma Cartwright Doxstater. She grew up and attended schools in Mott.

Violet married Daniel Kallis on May 25, 1942, in Mott and the following year the couple moved to Sidney and later Glendive. In 1952, the family moved to Bridger and finally settled in Lodge Grass. Mr. Kallis died in 1952. She married Leonard Perkins on Dec. 22, 1952, in Hardin, and the couple made their home in Lodge Grass. Mr. Perkins died in 1968. Violet moved into Hardin in 1980.

She was a member of the Open Bible Church and the Hardin Senior Citizens. She enjoyed crocheting, however, her church was her life, often devoting hours to reading her Bible. She was a "Mom and Grandmother to all."

Violet was preceded in death by twin sons, Carry and Larry.

Survivors include two daughters, Carolyn Rodriquez of Hardin and Lenora Broadbrooks of Saco; two sons, Leonard Perkins of Saco and Lee Perkins of Spokane, Wash.; six grandchildren and one great-grandchild.

Bullis Mortuary of Hardin has been entrusted with the arrangements.

Sylvia Half RedZitkana Zi WinyanYellow Bird Woman
FORT KIPP - Sylvia Half Red, 63, died on Feb. 16, 1999, at the Poplar Community Hospital in Poplar.
She was born on May 13, 1935, in Poplar, the daughter of John and Ruth Half Red. She grew up in Fort Kipp and attended schools in Brockton. Sylvia met and married Clifford Young Bear on Jan. 16, 1956, in Fort Kipp.

She worked as a teachers aide for a number of years in the Brockton Schools. She was a lifelong member of the Red Eagle Memorial Presbyterian Church and a member of the Red Eagle Ladies Aide. She enjoyed gardening, going to rodeos, and pow wows and watching her grandchildren compete in both. Sylvia had a special gift and touched many peoples' lives with her thoughtfulness and kindness. Even though she was not well she would always think of other people.

Survivors include one son, Mike Thomas Sr. of Fort Kipp; five daughters, Carol White Bear Bemer of Fort Kipp, Dorine Young Bear of Newtown, N.D., Trivian Young Bear Nault of Yakima, Wash., Marva Young Bear Three Stars, and Lynette Young Bear, both of Fort Kipp; two sisters, Lavina Perry and Mercy White Bear, both of Fort Kipp; grandchildren, Lynell Rodriguez, Noble Dragswolf, Frank Abbott, Talburt Abbott, Harry Three Stars III, Christian Sage Nault, Ethan Three Stars; and a special grandson, Cody White Bear; a special niece, Sybil Summers of Poplar; adopted daughter, Linda Connor of Wolf Point; grandchildren, great-grandchildren, and numerous nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her parents, five brothers and, one sister in infancy, and one brother, Lloyd Half Red, died in 1976.

A wake will be held on Sunday, Feb. 21, at 3 p.m. at the James Black Dog Activity Center in Fort Kipp with a prayer service at 7 p.m. Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. on Monday, Feb. 22, at the Activity Center with Rev. Enright Bighorn officiating. Interment will be in the Fort Kipp cemetery. Clayton Memorial Chapel is in charge of arrangements.

Daniel C. Haasakker
THREE FORKS - Daniel C. Haasakker, age 75 of Forsyth, and formerly of Three Forks, died Tuesday at the Rosebud Community Health Care System in Forsyth.
Dan was born in Willow Creek on Dec. 25, 1923, to the late Aire and Rose (Parker) Haasakker where he grew up on the family ranch. He attended Willow Creek School and worked for area ranchers. Dan enlisted in the Army during WWII where be served in the European Theatre and was wounded on Dec. 4, 1944, and sent back to England Base Hospital. He later received the Purple Heart. He spent 18 months in the Bushnell Hospital in Brigham City, Utah.

On June 9, 1950, Dan married Gladys Lane. They continued to ranch. In 1957 Dan went to work for the Northern Pacific Railroad, retiring in 1980.

He was a member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 7621 of Three Forks.

Dan was preceded in death by his wife of 41 years; brothers, John, Ray, Bennie, Weslie, and Robert Jr.

He is survived by sons and daughters-in-law, Don and Irmgerd Lane of Virginia, Ted and Virginia Lane of Polson, Carl and Carol Rae Lane of Helena, Martin and Judy Lane of Kennewick, Wash., Dan and Wanda Haasakker of Helena; daughter and son-in-law, Doris and Mark Pinkerton of Forsyth; also several grandchildren and nieces and nephews; sisters and brothers-in-law, Rose and Bill Lynas of Three Forks, Mary and Herman Bremer of Fairfield.

In May of 1998 Dan moved to Forsyth until the time of his death. He enjoyed his family, working with horses and farming. His motto in life was "I can beat this."

Funeral services will be held on Saturday, Feb. 20, 1999, at 2 p.m. in the K & L Mortuary Chapel in Three Forks. Interment will follow in the Fairview cemetery in Three Forks.

Memorial contributions may be made to the donor's choice.

Rev. William C. 'Bill' Mayhew
PEORIA, Ariz. - Rev. William C. Mayhew, 53, of Peoria, formerly of Billings, died Saturday, Feb. 6, 1999, of a heart attack.
He was born June 14, 1945, in San Francisco, Calif. He served in the U.S. Marine Corps with a tour of duty in Vietnam. He lived in McMinnville, Ore., from 1971 to 1982.

Bill attended Oregon Institute of Technology and received his BS Degree from Oregon State University. He received his MDIV from Pacific School of Religion in Berkeley, Calif., in 1985. He was working toward his DMIN through Fuller Theological Seminary in Pasadena, Calif.

Bill served as Associate Pastor of Beth Eden Baptist Church in Oakland, Calif., and as Pastor of First Baptist Church in Marysville, Calif., and First Baptist Church in National City, Calif. He served as Pastor of First Baptist Church in Billings from 1995 until August of 1998. He had served as Pastor of the Hope Baptist Church in Phoenix from November 1998 until his death.

Bill is survived by his wife, Nicki; sons, Steve, Chris and Jon Perry; mother, Shirley; brother, Bob; and five grandchildren.

Funeral services were held Saturday, Feb. 13, at the Hope Baptist Church in Phoenix. Interment with military honors was at Rest Haven Park in Glendale.

A service of remembrance will be held at 8 p.m. Sunday, Feb. 21, at First Baptist Church, corner of Third Avenue North and Division in Billings.

Betty Lou Harris
COLUMBUS - Betty Lou Harris, age 76, of Columbus died March 18, 1999, of cancer. She was born May 25, 1922, in Winnett to Ira and Helen Pierson.
Betty attended school in Cat Creek Oil Fields, Winnett, Lewistown and Billings. She graduated from Greeley, Colo., with a BA in Elementary Education.

Betty taught school in Colorado, Montana, Washington, and British Columbia Canada. She was also a principal in Grassy Plains, B.C. Betty's hobbies included playing bridge and gardening.

She was married to Thomas A. Samples of Billings from 1947 to 1962. She then married William Harris from 1963 to 1968.

Betty is preceded in death by her parents, her sister Francis (Roy) Vincelette, her son Patrick, and her husbands.

She is survived by a sister, Gayle (Larry) Larson; a brother, Frank Pierson; two daughters, Katherine (Jim) Riley of Cascade and Meigan (Bruce) Bellows of Verndale, Minn.; and a son, Steve Samples of Columbus. Betty has five grandchildren and three great-grandchildren.

There will be a memorial service at 11 a.m. Monday, March 22, at St. Mary's Catholic Church in Columbus. Smith Funeral Chapel in Columbus is in charge of arrangements. Memorials may be made to: Big Sky Hospice, (Stillwater Team) P.O. Box 35033 Billings, MT 59107.
