Phyllis Elaine Mace
MILES CITY - Phyllis Elaine Mace, age 66, of Miles City, passed away on Wednesday, April 7, 1999, at the Holy Rosary Health Center in Miles City.
Phyllis was born on May 2, 1932, at Mildred, the daughter of John and Ruby (Mason) Olson. She attended grade schools at Mildred and graduated from Baker High School. She worked for the telephone company and shortly after married Daniel Mace on Oct. 12, 1952, in Miles City. They lived in Miles City and then moved to Forsyth where she worked as an aide at the hospital. In 1960 they moved back to Miles City; she then went to work for the Holy Rosary Hospital on the O.B. floor, until the late 60's. She also worked at Woolworth's store in Miles City.

Phyllis was divorced from Daniel and in 1975 she married Gentry Bush. They remained in Miles City, then on to Billings and Belle Fourche, S.D., before they moved to Mildred, where Phyllis ran the Post Office. They then moved to Terry, where Phyllis managed the Prairie County Nursing Home, and following on to Baker where she opened a home health care business. In 1997 she was divorced from Gentry and she returned to Miles City were she has resided since.

Phyllis enjoyed embroidery, baking, playing cards and her grandchildren. She was very active in the American Legion and the VFW Auxiliary.

She is survived by two sons: Fred Mace and his wife Juanita of Billings, and Max Mace of Jerome, Idaho; two daughters: Connie and her husband Tom Hackney of Lake Stevens, Wash.; and Bonnie Mace of Miles City; three brothers: Wayne Olson of Miles City, Robert Olson and his wife Helen of Laurel, and Dale Olson and his wife Luella of Mesa, Ariz.; two sisters: Dorothy Gray of Miles City, and Jean and her husband Kermit Torve of Rapid City, S.D.; two sisters-in-law: Marcella Olson of Bismarck, S.D., and Bernice Stickler of Billings; six grandchildren: Brent and Carla Hackney, Daniel and Tim Mace, all of Wash.; and John and Sara Mace of Billings; and numerous nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her parents, a sister Fern, and two brothers: Vern and John.

Funeral services will be held on Monday, April 12, at 11 a.m. in the Chapel of Stevenson and Sons Funeral Home with Rev. Bob Thaden Jr. officiating. Interment will be at a later date in the family lot in the Custer County cemetery. Stevenson and Sons Funeral Home of Miles City is in charge of arrangements.

Earl G. Green Jr.
Earl G. Green Jr., 76, passed away Thursday, April 8, 1999, at the Veterans Medical Center in Sheridan, Wyo.
Earl was born on Dec. 14, 1922, to Earl Gordon and Emma Rebecca (Forysth) Green on the ranch near Melville. He was educated and graduated from Sweet Grass County High School. Earl served in the U.S. Navy from December of 1942 to June of 1945. He was united in married to Edna Ruth Lavold on Jan. 12, 1950, in Billings. In 1984 Earl retired from the Billings Post Office. He was a member of the Melville Lutheran Church; Doric Lodge #53 A.F. and A.M.; American Legion Post #19, Big Timber. He enjoyed hunting, fishing, horseback riding and refinishing furniture.

He was preceded in death by his parents, four brothers and two sisters.

Survivors include his wife Edna of the home in Billings; two daughters: Barbara and her husband Scotty Keim of Billings, and Rebecca "Becky" and her husband Richard Sidwell of Columbus; one sister, Kathryn Lowry of Big Timber; and numerous nieces and nephews.

Funeral services will be 1:30 p.m., Tuesday, April 13, at Lowry Funeral Home with Pastor Tom Peterman officiating the services. Interment will follow in Mountain View cemetery.

Memorials can be made to: Sheridan VAMC Nursing Home Care Unit, 1898 Fort Road, Sheridan, Wyoming 82801 or Al Bedoo Shrine Transportation Fund, 1125 Broadwater, Billings, Montana 59102.

Marvin K. Hjorth
GILLETTE, Wyo. - Funeral services for Gillette resident, Marvin K. Hjorth, 70, will be held at 2 p.m. Monday, April 12, 1999, at Trinity Lutheran Church, Gillette, with Rev. Randy Asburry of Faith Lutheran Church as officiant. Interment will follow at Mount Pisgah cemetery, Gillette. Visitation will be from 3-7 p.m. Sunday, April 11, at Wilson Funeral Home, Gillette. He died Friday, April 9, at his home in Gillette of natural causes.
Marvin K. Hjorth was born July 9, 1928, in Fallon, Mont., to Chris and Amelia "Mollie" (Starr) Hjorth. He grew up in Fallon and graduated from nearby Terry High School in 1946. He then attended Coyne Electrical College in Chicago. He entered the U.S. Army on June 30, 1948, served 2 years at Fort Ord, Calif., and later in Korea and was honorably discharged in November 1951.

He married Deloris Fischer on Aug. 3, 1957, in Billings. They farmed and ranched in the Fallon area for 10 years then moving to Lovell. He did numerous things in Lovell for the next 10 years.

They moved to Gillette in 1978. He owned and operated Gillette Radiator until retiring in 1992. He enjoyed traveling and started doing stained glass.

He was always active in church and was currently a member of the Faith Lutheran Church.

He is survived by his wife, Deloris Hjorth, Gillette; three sons: Dwight Hjorth, Fairbanks, Alaska, Curtis Hjorth, Joel Hjorth both of Gillette; a daughter, Debra Straubinger, Thornton, Colo.; five grandchildren; two brothers: Ivan Hjorth, Billings, Mont., and Dennis Hjorth, Fallon, Mont.

He was preceded in death by his parents.

A memorial has been established to benefit the Faith Lutheran Church Building Fund and donations may be sent in care of Wilson Funeral Home, P0 Box 734, Gillette, WY 82717.

Ben A. Becker
Bennie Alvin Becker left this world to meet the Lord on Wednesday the 7th of April, 1999. He died in his home after a courageous battle with cancer; his family was present to comfort him in his passage to Heaven.
Bennie Becker was born on June 4, 1936, in Billings, to Frederick and Martha (Graf) Becker. He attended the old Blue Creek School through the eighth grade and later graduated from Billings Senior High School in 1955. After graduation, he chose to care for his widowed mother, Martha, and continue managing the Becker family farm.

He joined the Catholic Church in 1957 and subsequently married Kay Hakert on Nov. 16, 1957. Together they raised four children on the farm south of Billings.

He was involved in many community activities including 4-H, the Montana Army National Guard, Blue Creek School Board, Farmers Union, the Local Community Committee for ASCS, and was elected as a committee man for the Yellowstone County ASCS Committee, serving for a total of 15 years.

In 1965, he earned his private pilot's license in a Piper J3 Cub and eventually became a skilled and respected crop duster in the Montana agricultural community. He was an accomplished farmer and took great pride in bringing progressive farming techniques to the area.

On Dec. 9, 1992, he married Gail McCloy. Together they resided in their home in the Blue Creek area.

Ben will be fondly remembered for his compassion towards all people and neighbors, love of his brothers and sisters, nieces and nephews, children and grandchildren, love of animals, sense of humor, strong will, and hard work. He especially enjoyed traveling with his wife, Gail, spending time in work and play with his children and grandchildren, farming, fishing, and most assuredly flying. He was greatly respected by all who knew him and will be missed. He is in Heaven with the Lord whom he loved and worshipped.

Ben is survived by his wife, Gail; his children, Steve and Trish Becker, Jim and Carolyn Becker, Patricia and Timothy Francisco, and Jennifer and Joseph Greenwood; his stepdaughters and sons-in-law, Debby and Wade Dyba and Andrea and Paddy Cosgrove, all of Billings; his sisters and brothers-in-law, Gladys and Bill Kobelt of Billings and Darlene and Harold Jones of Billings; his brothers and sisters-in-law, Leonard Becker of Texas, Harold and JoAnn Becker of Joliet, and Don and Laurie Becker of Fairfield; his grandchildren, Daniel and Sean Becker, Amanda Stevens and Haylee Becker, Cassie, Colten and Joshua Francisco, Preston, Aubrey and Augustus Greenwood, and Jacob and Carli Dyba: and numerous nieces, nephews, great-nieces and great-nephews, and many close friends.

Visitation will begin 10 a.m. Saturday at Michelotti, Sawyers & Nordquist, 1001 Alderson Ave. A Vigil Service will be held 5 p.m. Sunday, April 11, at St. Patrick's Co-Cathedral. Funeral Mass will be celebrated 12 p.m. Monday, April 12, at St. Patrick's Co-Cathedral with Rite of Committal in the Becker Family cemetery. Memorials may be directed to Big Sky Hospice or the Northern Rockies Regional Cancer Center.

John F. Bartlett
AVOCA, Iowa - John F. Bartlett, 81, passed away on March 12, 1999, in Council Bluffs. He was born in Pinedale, Wyo., to Clarence and Carrie Bartlett, fourth of 11 children.
He grew up in Glacier National Park and graduated from high school in Browning, Mont. After graduation, John joined the CCC and helped build dams in Petroleum County, Mont., one of which was Yellow Water. In 1942, John joined the U.S. Navy and came back to Petroleum County after the war. He worked for 16 years on the Lancelle Ranch near Winnett, Mont. John then went to work for the Agricultural Stabilization & Conservation Service in Winnett for a while and then worked in highway construction until retiring. He lived in Winnett, Roundup and Forsyth before moving to Avoca in 1991.

John loved to play cards and bowl...he was tough to beat, at both. He bowled up until a year ago.

John leaves his wife, Margaret of Avoca; daughter, Connie Nesheim (Jean) of Roundup; four stepchildren: Joel Inman of Omaha, Neb., Steve Inman of Sioux Falls, S.D., Robert Inman of Avoca, and Terry Lipke of Great Falls, Mont.; five grandchildren and six great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his parents, five brothers, two sisters, two sons and one grandson. John willed his body to science and wanted no services.

We wish him a fond farewell and know he is safe in God's hands, out of pain and feelin' good! From now on, when we hear thunder, we'll think: "Pop got another Strike!"

James 'Jimmy' McConnell
WOLF POINT - James "Jimmy" McConnell died on March 16, 1999, at the Faith Home. He lived in Frazer all of his life and was a resident of Faith Lutheran Home in Wolf Point since August of 1998.
Jimmy was born March 3, 1926, in Frazer, the son of Fannie (Shoots the Door) and James McConnell Sr.

In 1947 he married Marie Long Knife. Of this marriage, two daughters and a son were born. They later divorced.

Jimmy was active in his younger years playing baseball for Frazer, rodeoing as a bronc rider. He worked on the railroad for several years and worked for the Scott brothers for many years.

He is survived by his daughters, Emily McConnell of Wolf Point and Betty Jean Mainwaring of Glasgow; grandchildren, Brian McConnell, Robby McConnell, Shane Birdsbill, Tabery McConnell of Billings, and Jonathan Mainwaring of Glasgow; sisters, Myrtice Redstone, Rosella Murdock, Ruth Todd, and Florence Buck; brothers, Joseph McConnell and Richard McConnell; and numerous nieces and nephews and grandchildren, all of Frazer and Wolf Point; an uncle, Virgil McConnell, and cousins, nieces and nephews of Hays, and a special cousin, Bernard Standing.

Jimmy was preceded in death by his parents, Fannie and Jim Sr.; sisters, Lena Wright and Yvonne Smoker and brothers, Russell and Curtis McConnell; and a son, Harold Brian McConnell.

A wake will be held at the Frazer Community Hall on Thursday evening, March 18, with a family service at 7 p.m. Funeral services will be held at 10 a.m. on Friday, March 19, with Pastor Danny Lindsay officiating. Interment will be in St. Joseph's Catholic cemetery in Frazer. Clayton Memorial Chapel is in charge of arrangements.

Florence C. Turco
Florence C. Turco, 89, of Billings died Tuesday, March 16, 1999, at Deaconess Hospital. She was born Feb. 2, 1910, in Gebo, a daughter of Charles and Severina Branzi Stringari. She was raised and educated in Great Falls at the Ursuline Academy and then graduated from Lincoln High School in Billings. Florence married Ted Turco in 1936 in Billings where she lived most of her life.
Survivors include a daughter, Barbara (Dick) Doherty of Billings; one son, Gary L. Turco of Ogden, Utah; one brother, Arthur Gary of Belfry; one daughter-in-law, Sylvia Turco of Billings; eight grandchildren; and seven great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her parents; son, Ted; daughter, Judy; stepson, Rex Turco; two sisters; and two brothers.

Gramma was loved by her family and everyone who knew her; we all loved her; and she will be greatly missed by all those who knew her.

Cremation has taken place. Friends may meet at 1 p.m. Friday at Holy Cross cemetery for graveside memorial and inurnment. Arrangements were by Cremation or Funeral Gallery.

Eugene John Schuld

CIRCLE - Eugene John Schuld, of Circle, died March 16, 1999, at the Deaconess Hospital in Billings.
Eugene was born Nov. 3, 1920, in Circle, the son of Joseph and Rosa Schuld. He graduated from Circle High School in 1938 and attended Montana University on a football scholarship. Gene then attended Kinman Business University in 1942. In October of 1942 he entered the army and spent 13 months in Texas and two years in New Guinea, serving as First Sergeant in an army hospital.

In 1946, Gene returned to Circle and was employed at McCone Electric Co-op beginning in 1947 and retired as manager in 1986.

On Dec. 27, 1948, he married Marian E. Craig in Laramie, Wyo.

Gene was a very active member of the community, serving on the Town Council, McCone County Hospital Board, Sec.-Treas. of the Circle Volunteer Fire Department for 30 years, Circle TV Booster Club, Life Member of the VFW Post, Circle Kiwanis Club, Montana Coal Board from 1975 to 1981.

He is survived by his wife, Marian of Circle; a son, Allan and daughter-in-law, Valerie, and two grandchildren, Joseph Allan and Katelyn Mae of Lewisville, Texas; one sister, Carolyn Setera of Wibaux; and many nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents, and a brother, Raymond.

Funeral services will be held at 10 a.m. on Saturday, March 20, at the St. Francis Xavier Church in Circle with Rev. Fr. Leo McDowell of Circle and Rev. Fr. Steve Zabrocki of Wolf Point officiating. Military rites will be performed by the VFW Post No. 4813 with interment in the Riverview cemetery in Circle. Clayton Memorial Chapel is in charge of arrangements.

Gertrude (Goldie) Schuldt
Gertrude (Goldie) Schuldt, 62 of Billings, and formerly of Gackie, N.D., died Tuesday, March 16, 1999, of cancer.
Goldie Batsch was born May 18, 1936, at the family farm home near Gackie, the daughter of Edward and Bertha Batsch. She attended the local rural school where she received her elementary education. She and Melvin Schuldt were married on June 14, 1963, in South Dakota and then made their home in Billings where she loved to bowl and work on home crafts, crocheting dolls and doilies for her kids and grandchildren, also she liked going for drives in the mountains of Montana.

She was a member of the International Women Bowling Congress and also Women of the Moose, Chapter 877.

Gertrude is survived by her husband; three sons: Clifford Schuldt of Billings; Jeffery (Nancy) Fercho of Cleveland, N.D.; Gary (Marilyn) Schuldt of Dearborn, Mich.; two daughters: Karen Chandler and Linda (Bill) McKinzie, both of Lewistown; eight grandchildren and four great-grandchildren. She has seven brothers: Raymond (June) Batsch and Jacob (Lorretta) Batsch of Jamestown, N.D.; Norbert (Opal) Batsch of Sioux Falls, S.D.; Elmer (Doris) Batsch of Gackie; Marvin Batsch of Harvey, N.D.; Leonard (Charlotte) Batsch of Valley City, N.D.; and Eugene Batsch of Minot, N.D.; two sisters: Annetta (Arnold) Schlecht of Gackie and Doris (Clifton) Hill of Columbia, Mo. She also has one sister-in-law, Vi Batsch in Jamestown. She was preceded in death by her parents, Edward and Bertha Batsch, and a son, Russel Fercho, and one brother and one sister.

Cremation has taken place at Smith's Crematory. A memorial service will be held 2 p.m. Monday, March 22, 1999, at Smith Downtown Chapel.

Clifford S. Cummings
April 30, 1956 - March 2, 1999
VANCOUVER, Wash. - Clifford Cummings, age 42, died in Vancouver, March 2, 1999. He was born in Billings, Mont., and attended Poly Elementary, Will James Jr. High and Billings Senior High. He attended Chemeketa Community College in Salem, Ore., Boise State University in Boise, Idaho, and Spokane Falls Community College in Spokane. He completed the Orthotics and Prosthetics program at Spokane Falls Community College and worked as a prosthetic practitioner. He was working for Novacare, Inc. in Vancouver at the time of his death.
Cliff enjoyed the outdoors - camping, hunting, skiing, boating and white water rafting. He was a special son, brother and friend and will be greatly missed by those who knew him.

Survivors include his mother and stepfather, Paula and Donald Rinehart of Salem; his father and stepmother, Jerry and Marilyn Cummings of Billings; two brothers, Mark of Anchorage, Alaska, and Steve of Boise; a stepbrother, Chuck Dugan of Seattle; three stepsisters, Shelley Dugan of Minneapolis, Sarah Earle and Michelle Rogers of Salem.

Cremation has taken place. A-Memorial Service is planned in Billings, on May 30, at the home of his father.
