David Plenty Hoops Sr.
CROW AGENCY - David Plenty Hoops Sr., 80, of Crow Agency, passed away Monday evening, March 8, 1999, in the St. Vincent Hospital.
Iaxpa'aliiaawasaash "Challenges with his medicine" was born April 24, 1918, in Dunmore, a son of Isaac Plenty Hoops and Katie White Fox and was raised by Fred and Lizza Froze. He grew up in the Crow Agency area and attended schools in Hardin and the Chemawa Indian School in Oregon.

David owned and operated a barber shop in Crow Agency for the majority of his life. He later worked as a maintenance man for the Bureau of Indian Affairs in Crow Agency. He was well known for his arrow-making abilities.

He enlisted in the US Army and later received his Honorable Discharge.

David was one of the main War dancers for the Black Lodge District. He was "Carrier of the feeding staff" of the Daytime Hot Dance Ceremony, known to the other nations who practice it as the Sacred Tail Feather Lodge; he held this title for over 40 years, then passed it to his son David Jr. The title now is held by Burdic Two Leggins.

He was married and later divorced. He enjoyed all types of sports.

David was a member of the Big Lodge Clan and a child of the Piegan Clan.

He was preceded in death by one son, Garland; one daughter, Eleanor Plenty Hawk; one brother, Hugh Plenty Hoops; and two sisters, Peggy White Clay and Phyllis Spotted Horse.

Survivors include two sons, David Plenty Hoops Jr. and Kenneth Plenty Hoops of Crow Agency; five daughters, Cheryle Plenty Hoops and Gladys Jefferson of Crow Agency, Colleen Old Elk of Hardin, Aline Pretty on Top of Lodge Grass and Sandra Shield of Garryowen; three sisters, Eloise White Clay of Hardin, Carol White Clay and Alice Mae Tobacco of Crow Agency; one adopted sister, Katie Pretty Weasel of Hardin; 28 grandchildren, 46 great-grandchildren and four great-great-grandchildren.

Funeral services will be held 1 p.m. Friday in the Bullis Funeral Chapel with Rev. Phillip White Clay officiating. Interment with military honors will follow in the Hardin Fairview cemetery. Bullis Mortuary of Hardin has been entrusted with the arrangements.

Maria S. Balderas
LOGAN, Utah - Maria Sanchez Balderas, 49, died Monday, March 9, 1999, at the home of her daughter. She was born May 15, 1949, in Jackson, Mich., to Lazaro and Gabriela Galindo Sanchez. She married Jesus Godinez; he preceded her in death. She married Carmen Balderas in 1977.
She attended schools in Billings, Mont. She was raised in Billings and moved to Idaho Falls, Idaho, in 1970-1989, and then moved to Logan. She was a member of the Catholic Church.

She is survived by her husband, Carmen Balderas, Logan; two sons and two daughters: Sandy (Juan) Linares, College Ward; Mary Lou (Daniel) Sarmiento, Hyrum; Jesse Godinez Jr. (Dondi) and Christopher Godinez, both of Layton; seven grandchildren; two brothers and four sisters: Jane (Andrew) Williams, Atlanta, Ga.; Sara (Isabel) Rivera, Houston, Texas; Adela Sanchez and Fiedela Sanchez, both of Idaho Falls; Pete Sanchez, Logan; and Paul Sanchez, Helena, Mont.

Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. in the St. Thomas Aquinas Catholic Church in Logan. Friends may call at the Allen-Hall Mortuary, 34 E. Center St., on Friday evening from 6-8 p.m. with a Vigil Service at 7 p.m. Burial will be in the Logan City cemetery.

Lorayne L. Lynn (Davis) Berger
WOLF POINT - Lorayne L. Lynn (Davis) Berger was born in Wolf Point on March 22, 1929, to Sarah St. Germaine Davis and Pierre Davis.
"The Lord is my strength and my shield; in Him my heart trusts; so I am helped, and my heart rejoices, and with my song I will praise Him, " Psalm 28:7. Lorayne went peacefully home to be with our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ on March 9, 1999.

Lorayne remained in Wolf Point most of her life where she attended school. She later married Clifford F. Berger Sr. He died on Sept. 4, 1976. She then went on to raise their six children. She also cared for many others, including her mother and father, prior to her departure to be with Jesus. She displayed humor and a sweet spirit of kindness to all that she touched. She enjoyed cooking, gardening, quilting, dressmaking, crocheting, her many grandchildren and great-grandchildren. She especially liked visiting and laughing with her family, friends, and neighbors.

She is survived by her six children: Clifford F. Berger Jr. and family (Sheryl), Mr. and Mrs. Jeffery Berger, and Lana; Connie M. (Berger) Lambert and family (Kris, Reanna, and Ryan); Joseph P. Berger Sr. and family (Felicia, Joseph Jr., and Shaina); Pierre L. Berger and family (LeAnn, Samuel, and Joshua); Mrs. Kyle (Carol L. Berger) Hentges and family (Samantha and Sierra); and William L. Berger and family (Lori, Tara, and Terrill); four great-grandchildren, Tyra, Andrew, Kevin, and Spencer; two siblings, Mrs. Earl (Virginia "Ginny" Davis) LaRoche and families, and Mr. and Mrs. Elmer Davis and families; families of Mr. Lawrence Davis, Mr. Peter Davis, and Mr. Jim Davis.

Preceding her in death were Joseph, Pierre, Sarah, Jim, Peter, and Lawrence Davis.

Visitations will be held from 9 a.m. to 7 p.m. on Friday, March 12, at the Clayton Memorial Chapel in Wolf Point. Funeral services will be held at 10 a.m. on Saturday, March 13, 1999, at the Clayton Memorial Chapel with Pastor Kenny Azure officiating. Interment will be at the Greenwood cemetery.

Kenneth Donald Natzel
MILES CITY - Kenneth Donald Natzel, age 85, passed away Tuesday, March 9, 1999, at the Holy Rosary Extended Care in Miles City.
Ken was born in Portsmouth, Iowa, on Aug. 17, 1913, the son of Frank and Mathilda (Meyer) Natzel. He attended schools in Iowa and South Dakota. Ken worked for the Milwaukee Railroad for 43 years until he retired in 1972.

Ken married Violet Jorgenson in Andover, S.D., on Aug. 19, 1937. Following his retirement, they moved to Terry where they have resided since.

Ken enjoyed woodworking and restoring old houses. He also enjoyed yard work and playing pool. Kenneth was a member of the Moose Lodge in Roundup.

Ken is survived by three daughters: Ruth Lekse and her husband, Don of Terry, Carol Naasz and her husband, Irvin of Harlowton, and Fran Fleckenstein and her husband, Bill of Terry; a son, Larry W. Natzel and his wife, Linda of Milan, Tenn.; a brother, Les Natzel of Montevideo, Minn.; a sister, Bernadine Slaughter of San Angelo, Texas; 12 grandchildren and 12 great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents; his wife, Violet; a son, Frank; three brothers; four sisters; and two granddaughters: Jody Naasz and Lucy Natzel.

Funeral services will be held Saturday, March 13, 1999, at 11 a.m. at the Community Presbyterian Church in Terry with Rev. Leon Rathbun officiating. Interment will follow in the family lot in the Prairie County cemetery. Stevenson & Sons Funeral Home of Terry is in charge of the arrangements.

Should friends desire, memorials may be made to the charity of one's choice.

Clifton Laclead Conaway
Mr. Conaway was born in Reynolds, Neb., the son of Dr. and Mrs. H. O. Conaway. He graduated from Jackson High School in Lincoln, Neb., from the University of Nebraska, and attended the School of Law.
From 1933 to 1936, he was announcer, script writer and manager of radio stations in Lincoln and Kearney, Neb. From 1936 to 1938, he was securities analyst for J. C. Todd Investment Company, Lincoln. From 1938 to 1942, he was territory manager for the Bemis Brother Bag Company, Omaha, Neb.

He married June Butler in Norfolk, Neb., in 1942. Early in 1942, he enlisted in the United States Army, and for three years served as a special agent with the Counter Intelligence Corps.

After his discharge from the Army, Cliff and June moved to Billings where he accepted the position of Report & Information Specialist for the U.S. Bureau of Reclamation. From 1948 to 1971, he was staff assistant for the Interior Missouri River Basin Field Committee. From 1971 until his retirement in 1977, Cliff served as chief of the Branch of Industrial Development, Bureau of Indian Affairs.

During his service with the Department of the Interior, he received a Meritorious Award from the Blackfeet Indian Writing Company, and the Meritorious Service Award from the Department of the Interior.

After retiring from government service, Cliff was a sales counselor for I.C.R. Realty. Later he formed his own company, Great Outdoor Products, manufacturing and selling gear to the outdoors man.

During his son's early years, Cliff was active in the Rimrock Elementary School P.T.A. and a part-time coach for the fledgling Y.M.C.A. swim team. He and June chaperoned and provided transportation for the members to out-of-town meets.

Mr. Conaway was an enthusiastic advocate for the Boy Scouts. He was a Black Otter District Executive Board member, he was on the National Council, and attended three World Jamborees and two National Jamborees. A highlight for Cliff was to serve as an adult leader for his son's troop to the World Jamboree in Greece. After having served Scouting for 16 years, Cliff was the recipient of the Silver Beaver Award for his dedicated leadership.

As a Rotarian since 1957, Cliff served the organization as a member of the Board of Directors, vice-president, and president. He was granted the Paul Harvey Award from this organization. Mr. Conaway also served as commander of the Disabled American Veterans.

Cliff was an avid hunter, fisherman, and skier; he was a member of the National Ski Patrol for several years.

Mr. Conaway was a charter member of the Rimrock Masonic Lodge, a member of Al Bedoo Shrine, the Elks Lodge, Yellowstone Country Club and St. Stephen's Church.

Mr. Conaway is survived by June, his wife of 57 years; his son, Michael and wife, Lynn of Evanston, Wyo.; and the shining stars of his life, his grandson, Sean Conaway, and his granddaughter, Meghan Conaway of Douglas, Wyo.

Memorial services will be 6:30 p.m. Saturday, March 13, at St. Stephen's Episcopal Church.

Memorials to the Boy Scouts of America, Billings Family Services, or the charity of one's choice.

Leo L. Kowalczyk
Leo L. Kowalczyk, 72, of Billings, died Friday, March 5, 1999, at the home of his son and daughter. He was born Oct. 18, 1926, in Chicago, Ill., and spent his childhood and adolescence in Arkansas and Roundup.
Leo enlisted in the U.S. Army and served his country from 1950 until 1962. Following his discharge from the service he moved to Billings, where he worked 45 years for Midland Paint Co. In the years following retirement, Leo enjoyed spending time with family and friends. He was preceded in death by his parents, Frank and Stella Kowalczyk, one brother Chester, and one son, John Shore.

Survivors include his two brothers, Harry Kowalczyk of Roundup, and Joe Kowalczyk of San Diego, Calif.; four sisters, Cecelia Richie, Jenny Hogg, and Emily Schenck of Lewistown, and Katherine Sweet of McCabe; his two children, Walter and Beverly Shore; one granddaughter, Aleena Calei McDonald; and numerous nieces, nephews, cousins, and good friends. Thank you especially Harvey Guay for being such a special friend and thank you Big Sky Hospice for everything.

Leo, thank you for being our father, our mentor, and our friend. We love you and will miss you. Love, Walter and Beverly.

Funeral services will be held 1 p.m. Tuesday, March 9, at Michelotti, Sawyers and Nordquist with interment in Mountview cemetery. The casket is closed. Memorials may be sent to Big Sky Hospice, P.O. Box 35033, Billings, MT 59107.

Marcie K. Peterman
Marcie K. Peterman, 39, of Billings died March 5, 1999. She was born March 16, 1959, in Redding, England, the daughter of Barbara Peterman.
She was a high school graduate, attended school of cosmetology, and was a dietary technician. She enjoyed working in the carnival business because she loved people. Marcie lived in Chicago, Cooke City, Red Lodge and Billings. She worked at the Miner's Saloon in Cooke City, the Beartooth Hospital in Red Lodge, and St. Johns Nursing Home in Billings.

Marcie loved the mountains, enjoyed being with people, and most importantly loved being with her two daughters. She was very caring of others and could always light up the room or a situation.

Marcie was preceded in death by her father. Survivors are her daughters, Megan Peterman and Taylor Peterman of Billings, her mother Barbara Peterman and sister Julie Peterman of Manteca, Calif., and many close friends.

Memorial Services will be held at The Wayman Chapel AME, 402 South 25th on Tuesday, March 9, at 12 noon with lunch reception following at the church.

Memorials may be made to her daughters Megan and Taylor Peterman.

Leona Emily (Schumacher) Harn
Leona Emily (Schumacher) Harn died Friday, March 5, 1999 at her home. She was born on April 30, 1923, in Dickinson, N.D. She was the daughter of Gerhard and Clara (Wise) Schumacher. During her childhood she was raised on a farm south of Beach, N.D. She graduated from high school at Buffalo, Minn. She attended Dickinson State Teachers College and taught in a rural school. Later she moved to Billings where she met and married Gene Harn Nov. 22, 1950, at St. Patrick's Co-Cathedral in Billings. They had six children: Thomas and wife Virginia, Gerald, Robert and wife Renee, William and wife Diane, Patricia and Daniel.
Leona dearly loved her family and loved to cook and bake. She had six grandchildren: Erin, Casey, Michelle, Kimberly, Lauren and John. They were all a joy to her.

Gene and Leona operated a contracting firm for 30 years. Leona was a volunteer at St. Vincent's Hospital for 15 years and a piano player for the Community Center several years. She was a charter member of Holy Rosary Church. She was active in the Altar Society and Catholic Daughters and she sang with the funeral choir. Leona and Gene were ministers to shut-ins.

Leona is survived by her husband and six children. She is also survived by two sisters and a brother: Lucille Hammes and husband, Chuck of Camino, Calif., Sister Michelle Schumacher of St. Joseph, Minn., and John Schumacher of Billings. She was preceded in death by her sister, Angeline Schaff.

There will be a vigil at 7 p.m. Monday, March 8, at Dahl Funeral Chapel. Funeral Mass will be celebrated at 12 noon Tuesday March 9, at Holy Rosary Church with Rite of Committal in Holy Cross cemetery. Luncheon to follow at Holy Rosary. Visitation Sunday 2 to 5 and Monday 8 to 8.

Cora Lee McDonnell
Cora Lee McDonnell, 70, of Billings died March 9, 1999, at Deaconess Medical Center after a long battle with pulmonary fibrosis.
She was born June 23, 1920, in Fairview, to Glen and Ina (Hunter) Richardson. She grew up on a farm near Fairview and graduated from Fairview High School in 1946. She received a bachelor of science and master's degree in nursing from Montana State University in Bozeman.

She worked as a registered nurse in numerous hospitals in Montana, Wyoming and Washington, and over her career worked in surgery, the emergency room, delivery, nursery, rehabilitation and psychiatric wards. She returned to school and received a Post Masters Degree in Public Health from the University of Seattle.

In the 1960s, she worked for Yellowstone County Health Department as a public health nurse establishing free clinics for the community and school systems and conducting physical assessments on school children.

In 1969, Cora Lee moved to Bozeman and worked as a registered nurse once again. She retired from nursing in 1976 and earned her Family Health Nurse Practitioners Certificate the following year. She was a coordinator for the Montana Department of Health on a community health project to enlist volunteer nurses in rural Montana counties.

Cora Lee worked as a family health nurse practitioner for insurance companies when she retired in 1986 and moved back to Billings.

Cora Lee married Terence McDonnell on June 4, 1955, in Livingston. She loved learning, caring for people, church, her grandchildren, cooking and taking pictures. One of her fondest memories was her travel to Europe in 1984 with her mother. While in England, they attended the play "Singing in the Rain" at one of London's grand theaters.

Cora Lee was preceded in death by her parents and her brothers, William and Robert.

She is survived by a brother, Don Richardson of Thermopolis, Wyo.; two sons, Tom McDonnell and wife, Michelle of Castle Rock, Colo., Tim McDonnell and wife, Cindy of Red Lodge, and one daughter, Terrie Kenison and her husband, Ernie of Helena; six granddaughters and numerous nieces and nephews.

"We all Miss You Cora Lee and will always remember the love you brought to our lives."

Memorial services will be 4 p.m. Saturday, March 13, at the Smith West Chapel, 304 34th St. W. Cremation has taken place and interment of her cremains will be in Thermopolis at a later date. Memorials to Easter Seals.
