Dorothy Dora Harris Flatness
LAME DEER - Dorothy Dora Harris Flatness, age 80, went to heaven on May 25, 1999, at Deaconess Hospital in Billings with her family at her side.
Dorothy was born on May 1, 1919, to Ed and Bessie Standing Elk Harris at the family ranch on Rosebud Creek. Dorothy attended school at St. Labre Indian School. Dorothy fell in love and married Kermit Flatness on May 24, 1941. Kermit and Dorothy ranched on Alderson Gulch five miles east of Lame Deer. Dorothy continued to live on the ranch.

A source of great joy and pride in Dorothy's life were her children, grandchildren and great-grandchild, Christian. He made her laugh every time he visited her, even in the hospital the day before she went to be with the Lord. She actively participated in their lives, attending all their basketball games, track meets, band concerts, graduations, it didn't matter what they were participating in she was their loudest and proudest cheerleader.

Dorothy enjoyed beading, embroidering, baking but most of all talking on the telephone to all her friends and family. Dorothy was a devout Catholic and a member of the Blessed Sacrament Church. Dorothy was the keeper of the family traditions. She could always be heard encouraging everyone to live healthy and wholesome lives. She loved riding horses and playing her guitar in her younger days. She liked cover wagons, her apple trees, and her favorite color purple. She loved all animals and had many cats and dogs.

Dorothy was a chartered member of the Northern Cheyenne Livestock Association. She worked for the Pine Cone Factory in Lame Deer and the Guild Arts & Crafts in Ashland for many years. She babysat many children throughout her life, always having room in her heart for everyone.

She is survived by two daughters, Roberta Foote, Doreen (Leland) Pond, a son, Lonnie (Barbie) Flatness, all of Lame Deer; a sister, Inez Peppers of Lame Deer; grandchildren: Dr. Diane Pond and John Flying Jr. of Phoenix, Ariz.; Richard (Billie) Foot Jr. of Lame Deer; Jimmy (Jenifer) Pond of Lapwai, Idaho; Ricarda Foote of Bozeman; Alyson (Grant) Flatness of Billings; LaShawna Beartusk, Shawnta and Tyson Flatness of Lame Deer; and Kelly Ole Flatness of Grand Island, Neb.; and three great-grandchildren. She also is survived by many special nieces, nephews, and cousins. She was preceded in death by her husband, Kermit; daughter, Sheri Lou; and sons, Kermit "Ole" and Edward Flatness.

Rosary will be recited at 8 p.m. Friday, May 28, at the Blessed Sacrament Catholic Church in Lame Deer with funeral services to be held at 11 a.m. on Saturday, May 29, at the Blessed Sacrament Catholic Church.

We love you "Grandma Dorothy" and will miss you terribly but we know you are with Grandpa Kermit in your purple room in heaven.

Earl Johnson
SIDNEY - Funeral services for Earl Johnson, 89, Sidney, will be 10 a.m. Saturday, May 29, 1999, at the Pella Lutheran Church, with Pastor Alton Hillesland officiating. Interment will be in the Sidney cemetery, under the direction of Fulkerson Funeral Home of Sidney.
Earl Melvin Johnson was born March 18, 1910, to parents, Jacob and Mary (Thompson) Johnson in Kenmare, N.D., the eldest of seven children. They homesteaded in the Brorson Community, near Sidney, in 1910 and moved to Buffalo, Wyo., in 1918 and returned to Sidney in 1926. Earl attended school when they lived in Wyoming. Earl was united in marriage to Mildred McMullen, July 24, 1933, in Sidney, and they celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary with a trip to Alaska, by Mini-home. They celebrated their 65th wedding anniversary shortly before Mildred went to her heavenly reward.

They raised their family on a farm in Brorson Community. They were members of the Brorson Church until it closed in 1966, they then transferred their membership to the Pella Lutheran Church. Earl received the Richland County Soil Conservation award in 1966 for his efforts in contour farming and the Great Plains Programs.

Earl and Mildred retired and moved into Sidney in 1977. They traveled extensively, visiting all 48 of the continental United States and Alaska.

They started Earl's Agate and Gift Shop where they made agate jewelry and wood clocks. He enjoyed hunting, fishing and feeding the birds and squirrels. Earl especially enjoyed his grandchildren and great-grandchildren and doing things for people to make them happy. He cut agate crosses to be given to visitors of Pella Lutheran Church.

Earl died Monday morning, May 24, 1999, at the Sidney Health Center after a short illness.

Earl is survived by his two sons, Russell and wife, Irene of Sidney and Roger and wife, Marthea Johnson of Fairview; a stepdaughter, Helen C. Dunn of Spokane, Wash.; a sister, Vera Mullin of Fresno, Calif.; 10 grandchildren and 10 great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his parents; wife, Mildred; daughter, Ramona; a grandson, Bruce; two brothers and three sisters.

Richard B. "Corky" Anderson
Having lived only 53 years, Richard B. "Corky" Anderson passed away at his home on Tuesday, May 25, 1999, following a heart attack.
He was born in Wolf Point on July 20, 1945, a son of Arthur and Vivian (Siljenberg) Anderson and received his education there. Following a year of college education in Missoula, Corky began seismograph work in North Dakota and later moved with a crew to Wyoming. He spent time in the Army Reserves in Fort Ord, Calif., before returning to Wyoming where he and his wife, Shirley, raised two children. During this time Mr. Anderson worked for nearly 20 years for Parker Drilling as well as operating a small irrigated farm near Riverton.

In recent years Richard had worked overseas for Mallard Drilling Company in locations including offshore Mexico and South America; Lima, Peru; Pakistan; and Nigeria, South Africa. On April 10, 1999, he married Margaret Quinn Bartholow and together they resided in Billings where Richard was baptized at Sr. Bernard's Catholic Church on Easter of 1998 and offered his beautiful bass voice to the choir. His favorite pastimes included camping and hunting in the mountains of Wyoming and spending time with his St. Bernard, Bruno, and granddaughter, Shanelle.

Survivors include his wife, Margaret of Billings; his son and daughter, Blaine and Robin Anderson of Riverton; his mother, Vivian Anderson of Wolf Point; and Shanelle, the granddaughter he considered a true gift from God. Richard was preceded in death by his father, Arthur, and his brother, Russell.

Visitations will begin at 12 noon on Thursday at the Smith Downtown Chapel and continue until service time. The funeral mass will be held at 2 p.m. on Friday, May 28, at St. Bernard's Catholic Church, 226 Wicks Lane with cremation to follow. Smith Downtown Chapel is in charge of arrangements.

Don Harrison Greenley
Don Harrison Greenley, 79, of Billings died May 25, 1999, in the family home after an extended illness.
He was born in Waverly, Iowa, on Oct. 31, 1919, to Hilda and Robert Harrison Greenley. He attended schools in Minneapolis, Minn., Sidney, and graduated from Billings High School in 1937. He attended Rocky Mountain College under a football scholarship until family needs required his attention.

On Jan. 23, 1942, Don enlisted as a private in the Army Air Corps and advanced to sergeant while with the Fourth Air Force in San Francisco, Calif. He volunteered for pilot training and won his wings at Luke Field, Ariz., Nov. 3, 1943. He was a P-38 fighter pilot in the European African Middle Eastern Theater. He was awarded the Distinguished Flying Cross for his combat proficiency at Ploesti, Romania, on May 18, 1944. His fighter squadron was the 94th Fighter Squadron known as the "Hat in the Ring Gang, " made famous by World War I pilot, Eddie Rickenbacker. He also piloted P-51, P-47 and was a test pilot for the P-80 "Shooting Star, " the first combat jet.

Don married Roberta "Jeanne" Loudermilk on June 27, 1947. They had two children, David and Robin.

Don worked for the office of the city engineer of Billings as a surveyor prior to his military service. After the military, he was superintendent of Billings Park Department and then became Distribution Superintendent for the Billings Water Department. He retired after 37 years. He then went to work with Northwest Pipe Company as a sales representative for 10 years.

He enjoyed camping and boating at Hebgen Lake and fly fishing and hunting in the Stillwater River area.

Don is survived by his loving wife, Jeanne; his son, David and wife, Angel of Billings; his daughter, Robin and husband, Richard Lennemann of Bozeman; four grandchildren, Bob Blixt of Denver, Colo., Shelby Blixt and Ben Blixt of Bozeman and Don "Scooter" Greenley II of Tempe, Ariz.

Memorials may be made to Big Sky Hospice or a charity of choice.

The family would especially like to thank Big Sky Hospice, Professional Nursing Pool and Personnel, and Western Medical Service for their support and nursing care.

Cremation has taken place. Memorial Services will be held at Smith's West Funeral Chapel, 304 34th St. W. at 2 p.m. Friday, May 28, 1999.

Lloyd 'Sonny' Benson
ST. IGNATIUS - Lloyd "Sonny" Benson, 69, died peacefully at home May 25, 1999.
He was born in Regina, Saskatchewan, to Herb and Kate Benson and grew up on the family farm in Outlook.

He married Eunice Benson in 1952 and had four children, Brad Benson of St. Ignatius, Jerry Benson of Polson, Troy Benson of Ronan and Lorrie Benson Gordon of Wichita, Kan. He had four stepchildren, Billie Jean Holton of St. Mary's, Patsy Brailey of Chula, Calif., Sue Gay of Yuma, Ariz., and Steve Crossen of Riverside, Calif.

He divorced and married his present wife, Georgia Benson, in 1973.

Other survivors include his brother, Harold Benson of Outlook, and sisters, Elaine Gailey of Orlando, Fla., and Lorraine Slavens of Billings, and his beloved grandchildren and great-grandchildren, whom he dearly loved.

Sonny enjoyed life to the fullest and cherished times of being with his family and friends. He was well-known throughout the Mission Valley and touched many lives with his kindness and generosity.

Memorial services will be held Friday at 11 a.m. in the St. Ignatius Community Center with Joseph Felsman officiating. Military Honors will be presented by American Legion McCarthy Post No. 106.

Memorial services will also be held in Plentywood on Tuesday at 2 p.m. at the Fulkerson Funeral Chapel with burial in the Outlook cemetery.

Thekla Mathilda Widdicombe 'Tillie'
HARLOWTON - Thekla Mathilda Widdicombe, "Tillie, " 88, passed away May 25, 1999, in Wheatland Memorial Hospital in Harlowton after a short illness.
Tillie was born July 6, 1910, on a farm near Sweetwater in the Province of Saskatchewan, Canada. Her father and mother, August and Barbara Mathes, and the rest of her family immigrated to the Big Timber area when she was very young and she lived the rest of her life in the Big Timber and Harlowton areas. Tillie graduated from Sweet Grass High School in Big Timber in 1929 and spent one year in Billings where she attended the A.W. Johnston School of Business. After returning to Big Timber, she married William L. Widdicombe, "Bill" on Oct. 15, 1930. The couple raised seven children in Big Timber and in 1955 moved to Harlowton where they, along with the assistance of their sons, Bill and Sam, ran a successful mink ranch for a number of years. After retirement, Bill and Tillie lived in Shawmut until "Pop" died in 1969. Tillie then moved to Harlowton and lived in the Sage Apartments until beginning to live with her granddaughter, Cindy Bejar, and her family. She spent the last two years of her life with her grandson, Mike Widdicombe, and his wife, Terry of Harlowton. In her last years, she was constantly surrounded and attended to by a loving family.

Tillie was first of all a wife, mother, and grandmother. She crocheted beautiful afghans and other items "to order" for her children, grandchildren, and friends and was constantly mending, sewing, and patching for any person who needed to be "fixed up." She was the greatest house/grandchild sitter to be found. If Tillie could help, she would. Her great legacy to her family is the albums she carefully constructed for each of her sons and her daughter. The albums are bursting with school pictures, bits of family history and news items, cards and often surprising pieces of information. They are wonderful keepsakes from a woman who was dedicated to her family.

Tillie was a member of the Women of the Moose and the V.F.W. Auxiliary. She was preceded in death by her sons, William "Bill" and James "Jim, " and her only daughter, Sheila Wilson; sister, Anna Downey; and brother, Joe Mathes.

Tillie is survived by four sons, Joe and Ronald of Big Timber, Sam of Harlowton, and Charles of Billings; brothers, George Mathes of Big Timber, August "Gus" Mathes of Roberts, and Frank Mathes of Kennewick, Wash.; sister, Barbara Mathes of Lovell, Wyo.; 26 grandchildren, numerous great-grandchildren and five great-great-grandchildren; also numerous cousins, nieces and nephews.

Funeral services will be 1 p.m. Friday, May 28, 1999, at Lowry Funeral Home in Big Timber with Sister Catherine Kinsella officiating. Interment will follow in Mountain View cemetery. A gathering for family and friends will be held after the services at the American Legion Club in Big Timber. Memorials may be sent to the Wheatland Memorial Hospital, P.O. Box 287, Harlowton, MT 59036. Lowry Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements.

Carly Nicole Bloesser
SAVAGE - Private services for Carly Nicole Bloesser, infant daughter of Rolly and Jan (Basta) Bloesser, are on Monday, May 24, at the First Lutheran Church in Savage with Pastor Erik Jelinek officiating. Musical selections are provided by Linda Nelson and Linda Bergstedt. Casketbearers are Mark Basta, Todd Basta, Roger Bloesser and Kelly Auck. Interment will be in the Riverview cemetery under the direction of the Fulkerson Funeral Home of Sidney. Memorials may be given to the First Lutheran Church in Savage.
Carly Nicole Bloesser was born May 22, 1999, to Rolly and Jan Bloesser, and a sister, Chandi, and a brother, Trey. Carly never took a breath or opened her eyes, so the angels gently carried her to heaven to our Heavenly Father. We do not understand why God chose her, but she must be a very special child to Him. Her absence here on earth will always leave a hole in our hearts, but we can always look to the heavens and know that she is safe and happy. Thank you, God for allowing us to love this child and we look forward to someday holding our littlest angel in our arms again.

Carly Nicole Bloesser was stillborn on Saturday, May 22, 1999, at the Sidney Health Center.

Surviving her are: her parents, Rolly and Jan Bloesser of Savage; a brother, Trey, and a sister, Chandi, both of the family home; maternal grandparents, Jim and Cathy Basta of Savage; parental grandparents, Al and Rachel Bloesser of Sidney; maternal great-grandparents, Gordon and Marie Tuott of Sidney; paternal great-grandparents, Charlie and Lollie Basta of Glendive; numerous aunts, uncles, and cousins.

Bernice Annella Jones
Bernice Annella Jones, 82, of Billings, died Tuesday, May 25, 1999, at St. Vincent Hospital.
The daughter of Jesse T. and Rose Grant, Bernice was born March 8, 1917, at Jordan.

She married Robert L. Jones in Miles City in 1935. In 1946, Bob and Bernice moved from Miles City to Billings.

Bernice was a beautician for over 50 years, beginning her career in Miles City at The Bob Shop. After moving to Billings she worked at the Northern Hotel, Jasmine Towers at the Hart Albin Building, and Creative Coiffure on Second Avenue North. After retiring, she continued to work from her home.

Bernice was a 50-year member of St. Patrick's Co-Cathedral and had volunteered at St. Vincent Hospital for many years. She was the best chocolate chip cookie maker ever!

Her husband, Bob, preceded her in death in August, 1980.

Survivors include three daughters, Barbara (Pete) Oljar of Helena, Diana (Dean) Tschache of Birmingham, Ala., Linda (Jerry) Pospisil of Bridger, and her son, Richard Jones of Billings; 11 grandchildren, four great-granddaughters, and a great-grandson soon to be born.

Vigil services will be 7 p.m. Thursday at Michelotti, Sawyers & Nordquist Mortuary. The Funeral Mass will be 12 Noon, Friday at St. Patrick's Co-Cathedral with Rite of Committal in Holy Cross cemetery.

Memorials may be made to Ronald McDonald House, Big Sky Hospice, or the charity of one's choice.
