Helen Davis (Dahlstrom) Breil
POWELL, Wyo. - Helen Davis (Dahlstrom) Breil died Friday, May 7, 1999, in Powell. Helen was born Jan. 1, 1911, in Bridger, Mont., the youngest of four children born to Andrew and Rena (Hopkins) Dahlstrom. The family moved to Billings in 1926, and Helen graduated from Billings Senior High in 1928.
Eugene Breil and Helen Dahlstrom were united in marriage on June 1, 1940. Gene died in 1963. Gene and Helen were both members of Billings Bible Church.

Surviving are their daughter Mary Beth Keil and husband Bill of Powell; grandson Eric Keil, wife Kendra, and son Joshua of Sagle, Idaho; granddaughter Mindy Gilbert, husband Derek and sons Nathan, Elijah and Matthew. She is also survived by 10 very special nieces and nephews and their families.

Helen was preceded in death by her sister, Maryden Nelsen Bartels (1906-1997), her brother Carrol Dahlstrom (1907-1972), and her brother, John Dahlstrom (1909-1998).

In lieu of flowers, memorials may by directed to Billings Bible Church's Mission Fund or to Montana Rescue Mission.

Visitation will be 3 to 5, Sunday, May 9 and 8 to 5, Monday at Dahl Funeral Chapel. Funeral services will be held Tuesday, 10 a.m., May 11, at Billings Bible Church.

Interment will be at Mountview cemetery . The family has entrusted Dahl Funeral Chapel with the arrangements.

Kenneth Eugene Garoutte
LANDER, Wyo. - Funeral services for Kenneth Eugene Garoutte, longtime Lander area resident, were held Friday, May 7, 1999, from the Chapel of Mount Hope, Hudson's Funeral Home in Lander, with the Rev. Father Tom Kadera of the Holy Rosary Catholic Church, officiating. The Rosary was said at the evening vigil for the deceased, on Thursday, May 6, 1999.
Kenneth Eugene Garoutte, age 64, died at the Lander Valley Medical Center, just after midnight of May 2, 1999, following a lengthy illness which has disabled him for over 16 years. Ken was born the son of Larry and Loretta (Vandersnick) Garoutte, Feb. 18, 1935, at Columbus, Mont., and attended schools there. Kenneth married the former Virginia Lee Haley, Oct. 27, 1956. The family came to the Riverton, Wyo., area in 1957 to work in the gas hills for the Lucky Mac Uranium Mine, moving to Lander in 1962.

Kenneth started in the labor pool of the Atlantic City Ore Mine, U.S. Steel Corporation and worked his way to be "crusher foreman" until the mine closure in 1982. An ardent outdoorsman, Ken became an expert angler. He was a master gardener and greatly enjoyed his children and grandchildren.

In addition to his wife, Virginia of Lander, he is survived by his mother, Mrs. Loretta Garoutte of Park City, Mont.; one daughter: Keri Ardette and Matt Myers of Lander and two sons: Kenneth L. "Rusty" and Cathie Garoutte of Roscoe, Ill., and Kim Virgil and Linda Garoutte of Thornton, Colo. Two sisters: Carol Heit of Laurel, Mont., Jane and Dave Schlosses of Anchorage, Alaska and one brother: Dennise and Gen Garoutte of Raleigh, N.C., and eight grandchildren.

Karla Jo Morrison
RICHMOND, Va. - Karla Jo Morrison, 35, of Richmond, formerly of Idaho Falls, Idaho, died in her sleep April 28, 1999, at her home in Richmond.
She was born on July 28, 1963, the daughter of Joe and Diane Sielinsky in Idaho Falls. She grew up in Idaho Falls and graduated from Skyline High School. She attended Eastern Montana College in Billings, earning her degree in Elementary Education.

On Oct. 22, 1988, Karla married Herbert C. Morrison at Trinity United Methodist Church in Idaho Falls. She was a member of Trinity United Methodist Church.

Karla was a homemaker and enjoyed crafts and cross-stitch. Karla loved her "kids" - Patty Cat, and her dogs, Paula and Molly.

Surviving are: Husband, Herbert, of Richmond, Va.; parents: Diane and Joe Sielinsky of Island Park, Idaho; grandparents: Mildred Roods of Pryor, Mont., Walter and Virginia Sielinsky of Edgar, Mont.: sister: Kara (Steve) Dodge of Bozeman, Mont.; Sister-in-law: Patty (Garry) Myers; brother-in-law: Brian Morrison; three nephews and one niece. She was preceded in death by her Grandfather, Bob Roods.

Funeral services were held Monday, May 3, at Wood Funeral Home in Idaho Falls with the Rev. Michael Kennedy of Trinity United Methodist Church officiating. Burial was in the Fielding cemetery under the direction of Wood Funeral Home.

The family suggests memorials to the Bonneville Humane Society, P.O. Box 2763, Idaho Falls, Idaho 83403.

Margaret was preceded in death by her parents; three brothers Alonzo, Chet and Harry; and her friend Pete Schonnians. Survivors are one son and daughter-in-law Vera and Fran Gleason of Martinsdale, Mont.; and one daughter Eleanor Lund of Helena; one brother Bert Stroup of Buffalo, Wyo.; and three sisters Mary Johnson, Helen Johnson and Rose Stone all of Wyoming; seven grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren.

Cremation has been held and private family services will be held at a later date. Linden's Herrmann & Company Funeral Home is in charge ofarrangements.

Ernest A. Timmins
REEDPOINT - Ernest A. Timmins, 59, of Reedpoint passed away Thursday, April 29, 1999 at his residence after a year-long battle with cancer.
Ernie was born March 21, 1940, to Isaiah and Mary (Cain) Timmins in Billings. He attended Billings Senior High School, and took some courses at the University of Maryland in 1960, and at Rocky Mountain College in Billings in 1980. Ernie started working part-time when he was 13 years old and was a hard worker all of his life. He worked as a partsman, warehouseman and other similar jobs from 1954 to 1960.

He served in the U.S. Army from 1960 to 1967 at Ft. Benning, Ga; Ft. Bragg, N.C.; and overseas service in Turkey and Viet Nam. He was honorably discharged as a Staff Sergeant. From 1967 to 1972 he worked as an equipment repairman, warehouseman and night foreman for two companies in Billings. From 1972 to 1979 he was Unit Controlman and Boiler Fireman at Continental Oil Refinery in Billings. In 1979 he moved to Reedpoint and served as bus driver and maintenance man for the Reedpoint Schools. In May 1982 he started a family business which included logging, weed spraying and mail delivery.

Ernie is survived by his wife, Wanda of the home in Reedpoint; his mother, Mary of Vancouver, Wash.; brother, Charles of Rowland Heights, Calif.; son and daughter-in-law, Kerry and Shelly Timmins and grandsons Mitchell, Cody and Riley of Veneta, Ore.; son, Randy of Monroe, Ore.; daughter and son-in-law Lugene and Rick Armstrong and granddaughter Elysa of Sequin, Texas; step-son and family, Lee and Teri Greeno and grandson Donnie Standley of Reedpoint; and foster brother, Frank Murphy.

Memorial services will be held 2 p.m., Monday, May 3, at the Evangelical Church in Reedpoint.

Marcene Louise Bailey Shumway
POWELL, Wyo. - Marcene Louise Bailey Shumway passed away on April 30, 1999, in Powell after a short illness. She was born to Don and Eva Bailey on October 6, 1915, in Independence, Missouri.
Marcene was raised and educated in Greybull, Wyoming. She attended John Brown University in Siloam Springs, Arkansas, and the University of Wyoming in Laramie. She taught school in Shell, Emblem, and Byron, Wyoming.

While teaching in Byron, she met Hyrum Albert "Bill" Shumway, and they were married in Red Lodge, Montana, on July 4, 1943. This union of marriage produced five children.

Her talents as a mother, grandmother, and homemaker were unsurpassed. Marcene was an expert seamstress, she enjoyed reading and being with her family. She was a very active and dedicated member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day saints.

She is survived by four daughters - Judie (Don) Hillman of Sheridan, Wyoming, Linda (Wes) Learned, Sally (Bob) Langdon, Donna (Kelly) Burgener and one son, Richard (Cindy) Shumway, all of Powell; eight grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her husband Bill, her parents, brother, sister and a grandson.

Services will be held at 1 p.m.. Tuesday, May 4, in the LDS Church in Powell. Interment will follow in the Penrose cemetery outside of Byron. Visitation will be one hour before service at the Church.

Elizabeth "Betty" Bottomley Wagner
DENVER, Colo. - Elizabeth "Betty" Wagner, 80, formerly of Billings, passed away at the home of her grandson in Denver on April 29, 1999, after a brief illness with cancer. Betty was born June 8, 1918, in Great Falls, Mont., the daughter of Frank and Frances Bottomley. She attended school in Great Falls, graduating from MSU in Bozeman with a degree in home economics. She and her husband, Charles "Charlie" E. Wagner, met at MSU and later married in August 1941. They moved to Billings, where she spent 56 years as a devoted homemaker and mother. After Charlie's death in 1995, Betty moved to Denver to spend more time with her beloved daughters, Beth and Cathy.
Betty was an active member of Atonement Lutheran Church in Billings and participated in many of the activities and women's groups. She and Charlie liked traveling with the Senior's Group at Atonement and especially enjoyed weekends at Christikon Bible Camp. Betty was a dedicated and loving mother and she often babysat for many of the neighborhood kids. She was a voracious reader, enjoyed needlework, sewing, music, and found great pride and joy being near her children, grandchildren, and great- grandchildren. Family and friends were especially important throughout "Grandma Betty's" lifetime, and she will be greatly missed by all.

Betty is survived by daughter and son-in-law, Beth and Jim Gray of Denver; son, Rich Wagner, and former daughter-in-law, Kathy Wagner of Billings; daughter and son-in-law, Cathy and Tom Ayers of Denver; and son, Jon Wagner; grandchildren: Jerry, Steve, and Kevin Gray, Justin and Jeremy Wagner, Amy and Jill Ayers; great-grandchildren: John, Scott, and Karoline; step-great-grandchildren: Amber, Trae, and Davia. She is also survived by many other wonderful family members and friends.

Betty is preceded in death by her husband, Charlie, her parents, and her sister, Kitty.

Funeral services with be held at Atonement Lutheran Church in Billings, Thursday, May 6th at 1 p.m. Interment will follow at Park City cemetery.

Memorials may be sent to Atonement Lutheran Church, 6281 W. Yale, Denver, Colorado 80227 or Christikon Bible Camp, c/o Atonement Lutheran Church in Billings. Smith Downtown Chapel is in charge of arrangements and visitation.

Thomas Glenn Lagerquist
Tom Lagerquist, 31, left this world to join his two brothers in Heaven on April 29, 1999. He was born Thomas Glenn Lagerquist, Oct. 16, 1967, in Billings, the fifth child in a family of six, son of Glenn and Fran Lagerquist.
He attended school in Great Falls and graduated from Anne Carlson Crippled Children's School in Jamestown, N.D. He also attended Eastern Montana College and Billings Vo-Tech.

Tom touched many lives with his gentle spirit, his acceptance and dignity, and his love. He had the ability to enjoy life in the face of a horrible, crippling disease. Tom never complained about his situation. He loved being an uncle to his seven nieces and nephews and taught them about courage. Some of the happiest times of his life were spent at the MDA Summer Camp where lifetime friendships were formed. He will be remembered for his blond hair, quick smile, and his fierce devotion to the Minnesota Vikings.

He was preceded in death by his brothers, Larry and Chris Lagerquist; grandmother, Annie Lagerquist; grandfathers, Harry Lagerquist and Allen Heldegaard.

Survivors include his parents, Glenn and Frances of Billings; his sister and husband, Kathy and John Haigh of Billings, their four children, Katrina, Jay, Jason, and Karisa Baker; his sister and husband, Brenda and John Glass of Vancouver, Wash., their two children, Laurel and Mathern; his sister and husband, Penny Lagerquist and Doug Palmen of Billings, their son, James Douglas (J. D.) Palmen; maternal grandparents, John and Blanche Otterstetter of Fairview. Tom also leaves behind aunts, uncles, cousins and many close and dear friends too numerous to mention.

Tom's brothers, Chris and Larry Lagerquist; grandmother, Annie Lagerquist; grandfathers, Harry Lagerquist and Allen Hildegard, preceded him in death.

A vigil will be 7 p.m. Monday, May 3, at Dahl Funeral Chapel. Funeral Mass will be 12 noon, Tuesday, May 4, 1999 at St. Patrick's Co-Cathedral. Memorials may be made in his name to The Parent Project, Duchenne Muscular Dystrophy, 125 Marymont Ct., Middletown, OH 45042 or the Gary R. Haigh EMS Scholarship Fund, c/o Deaconess Foundation, P0 Box 37000, Billings, MT 59107.

John Buffalohorn
John Buffalohorn of Billings, died Friday morning April 30, 1999, at St. Vincents Hospital. He was born Feb. 18, 1932, to Manuel Redwoman and Olive (Seminole) Redwoman. John grew up near Busby where he attended boarding school. At the age of 15 years, he and David Little White Man were adopted by Francis and Eva Eagle Bear of Poplar. There he finished High School. From there he went to Haskell Institute in Lawrence, Kansas, where he graduated with a degree in business. While at Haskell, he met Mary Louise Wolfe whom he married on Feb. 18, 1953, in Poplar.
John served in the United States Army during the Korean conflict from 1953 to 1954. He began his government career in 1955 working for the Bureau of Indian Affairs retiring after 41 years. He enjoyed people, visiting friends, helping others, and spending time with his grandchildren. His pastimes included bowling and enjoying life.

John is survived by his wife, Mary; son, Jim; daughter, Jonnie (Frank) Sheehan of Billings; and three grandchildren: Troy Buffalohorn, and Tia and Kenny Sheehah. Also surviving are three sisters: Bernice (Fred) Cummins, Sylvia Rising Sun of Poplar, and Violet (Alfred) Parriette of Fort Duchesne, Utah; a niece, Bernadette (Mike) Dimas of Poplar; and three nephews: Thomas, Dennis, and Verlin LittleWhiteman of Busby.

Funeral Services will be Wednesday, May 5, at 2 p.m. at Dahl Funeral Chapel, Billings. Interment will follow at Mountview cemetery. Memorials may be made to the charity of one's choice. The family has entrusted Dahl Funeral Chapel with the arrangements.

Ileene Rice
SIDNEY - Funeral services for Ileene Rice, 60, Sidney will be 10 a.m., Wednesday, May 5, 1999, at Peila Lutheran Church, Sidney, with Pastors Mark and Maryann Morgenstern officiating. Visitation will be Noon to 6 p.m., Sunday, May 2, and Monday and Tuesday, 9 to 7 p.m. Interment will be in the Sidney cemetery under the direction of Fulkerson Funeral Home of Sidney.
Ileene was born Dec. 22, 1938, to parents Ed and Nora Corneliusen in Glendive. She grew up on the family farm SW of Glendive where she attended Lower Crackerbox school. Ileene later attended Glendive high school where she graduated with the class of 1956. After high school, Ileene attended Montana State University at Bozeman where she graduated with her nursing degree. Ileene worked at the Deaconess Hospital in Billings. On March 25, 1961, she was married to Steve Rice at Glendive. They lived in Joliet for a short time before moving to Rural Savage. In 1968 they moved into Savage. Ileene worked as a Public Health Nurse for several years. On April 1, 1975, she started working at the Sidney Community Memorial Hospital where she remained for over 24 years.

Ileene enjoyed quilting, sewing, photography and birds. Ileene was active in the Montana Eyebank Donor program where she served on the board. Ileene was a devoted mother who especially enjoyed her grandchildren. She had a great love of nursing and teaching. Ileene always put the concerns of the family and patient first.

Ileene died Friday, April 30, 1999, at the Sidney Health Center, Sidney.

Survivors include her parents, Carl "Ed" and Nora Corneliusen of Glendive; three daughters: Laurie Grimsrud and her husband, Jay of Fairview; Karen Boysun and her husband, Chris of Culbertson; Julie Ruff and her husband, Roger of Billings; a son, Curt Rice and his wife Lisa of Fairview; five grandchildren: Kacee and Jeremy Boysun, Jade and Cole Grimsrud, and Dustin Rice; two brothers: Earl and Arvid Corneliusen both of Glendive; six sisters: Marilyn Dufner of Glendive, Edith Hansen of Bismarck, N.D., Sharon Allen of Billings, Renee Bennett of Glendive, Connie Diegel of Glendive, and Ruth Sullivan of Glendive.

Ileene was preceded in death by an infant son, Keith, her grandparents, and two infant grandsons, Nathaniel Rice and Steven Ruff.

Leonard Slagsvold
MILES CITY - Leonard Slagsvold, age 78, of Miles City, formerly of Lindsay, passed away on Friday, April 30, 1999, at the Holy Rosary Extended Care in Miles City.
Leonard was born on Jan. 19, 1921, in Glendive, the son of Lars and Anne (Lovaas) Slagsvold. He graduated from Custer County High School in 1940. In March of 1945 Leonard and Mary McGovern were married . They made their home seven miles north of Lindsay, raising Registered Herefords until 1978, when they moved to Glendive. Leonard was always very active in local politics and served on many different boards. He was a member of the A.A., the Elks, and the Lutheran Church. He loved to rodeo, spending time with his grandchildren and great-grandchildren, playing cards, dancing, music, horses and his beloved Herefords.

He is survived by one brother, A. K. Slagsvold of Glendive; four children: Linda and her husband, Don Lange, of Huntley; Stuart Slagsvold and his wife, Diane, of Billings; Kenny Lars Slagsvold, of Lindsay; and Shellie and her husband, Bob Ehrmantraut, of Scarborough, ME; his grandchildren: DeEtte Thoen, of Morrison, Colo., Trever Lange, of Port Hueneme, Calif., Casey Lange, Leigh Slagsvold, and Evan Slagsvold, all of Billings, and Kevin Ehrmantraut, of Scarborough, ME; four great-grandchildren; and many nieces, nephews and good friends. He was preceded in death by his parents.

Funeral services will be held on Tuesday, May 4, 1999 at 11 a.m. in the Zion Lutheran Church in Glendive. Interment will follow in the family lot in the Dawson County cemetery in Glendive. Stevenson and Sons Funeral Home of Miles City is in charge of arrangements.
