Myrtle Constance Cartwright
PLENTYWOOD - Funeral services for Myrtle Constance Cartwright will be held 10 a.m. Monday, June 14, 1999. Pastor Wesley Aardahl will officiate at the service at Volmer Lutheran Church; interment will be in Volmer cemetery. Myrtle, 84, died Wednesday morning, June 9, 1999, at the Sheridan Memorial Nursing Home in Plentywood.
Myrtle was born Nov. 6, 1914, on the Grenora, N.D., homestead of her parents, Emil and Inga (Christenson) Erickson. She grew up on the family homestead southwest of Grenora. She attended rural grade schools through the eighth grade and worked in both Grenora and Sidney.

In 1938, she married Alva Cartwright. During their marriage, they were blessed with one daughter and four sons. Throughout the years, Alva and Myrtle farmed and ranched south of Dagmar where, in addition to farming, they raised many different types of animals, including sheep, cattle and chickens. Myrtle was an active member of the Volmer Lutheran Church and WELCA.

In the early years, it wasn't uncommon for Myrtle's children to find her conversing with her mother, Inga, in Norwegian so the kids couldn't understand a word they said. Myrtle always enjoyed having company and loved to visit with all of her friends and family who came to see her. If you stopped at her house, you could usually find her at the kitchen table with a cup of coffee and a plate of goodies. She could either be playing solitaire or listening to her favorite tapes.

Myrtle loved to garden and enjoyed tending to her many plants and flowers. Family was very important to Myrtle and she rarely missed attending activities and events that her children and grandchildren participated in. She was a part of the birthday group and looked forward to celebrating these special days with her many friends. She also enjoyed her trips to town with her dear friends, Betty and Juliet, where they would frequently get sidetracked playing Bingo, another one of Myrtle's favorite pastimes.

In the past year, while a resident of the LaCasa Personal Home Care and the Sheridan Memorial Nursing Home, Myrtle was always happy to see all of the people who stopped by to see her. She spent a lot of time with her word find books, as well as watching and listening to the birds outside her window. Myrtle was the kind of person who always put others' needs before her own. Her children and grandchildren were truly blessed to have her play such an important role in all of their lives. Myrtle was a very devoted mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, sister, aunt, and friend who touched the hearts of all that knew her with her happiness, humor, love and generosity.

Myrtle is survived by her four sons and their families: John and his wife, Evelyn of Dagmar and their three daughters, Tammy, Wendy and Jenny; Ronald and his wife, Judy of Medicine Lake and their three children, Marc, Brant and April; Clint of Dagmar and his three children, Cal, Cindy and Cathy; Curt and his wife, Vicki of Rapid City, S.D., and their two children, Chad and Nicole; and three grandsons born to her daughter, Helen: Keith, Kevin and Kraig Warner. She is also survived by 10 great-grandchildren; four sisters: Ruth Bauer, Pherne Jorgenson, Florence Sutherby, and Frances Potter; and numerous nieces and nephews. She is preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Alva; her daughter, Helen; her sisters, Ellen Lauckner and Anna Schafer; and her brothers, Lloyd Erickson and Ernest Erickson.

Robert Bruce Ammons
MISSOULA - Robert Bruce Ammons, 79, died of pneumonia at home on Friday, May 21, 1999. He was born in the governor's mansion in Denver, Colo., on Feb. 27, 1920, to Bruce Ammons and Margaret Gates Ammons, and resided for several years on the family's homestead outside of Partial, Colo. After attending several grade schools where his mother taught, he graduated from high school in San Diego, and then from San Diego State College in 1939 with majors in history, as well as psychology, political science, and German.
He received his General Secondary Teaching credentials from the University of California at Los Angeles in 1940. In 1941 he earned a Master's Degree from the University of Iowa in general psychology, worked in an aircraft factory in San Diego during WWII, and in 1946 received a Ph.D. from the University of Iowa that included both clinical and experimental psychology.

Before coming to the University of Montana in 1957 as a full professor, he was an instructor at Syracuse University in 1946, an assistant professor at the University of Denver from 1946-48, at Tulane University 1948-49, at the University of Louisville from 1949-1955, and an associate professor at the University of North Dakota in 1956-57. He retired as Professor Emeritus from the University of Montana in 1985 after 28 years of service. He was originally certified in 1975 by the Council for the National Register of Health Service Providers in Psychology, and worked and consulted in clinical psychology.

Dr. Ammons was recognized professionally as a fellow of the AAAS, Sigma Xi, several divisions of the American Psychological Association, including Experimental Analysis of Behavior, Clinical, and History of Psychology. He has held memberships in more than thirty other international scientific and professionally related organizations, and also held several offices in the Montana Psychological Association from 1958 to 1985, including the presidency and secretary of the MPA Board of Examiners.

He did research on motor skills learning, verbal intelligence, cultural history, child development, and many other areas, accumulating over 300 publications. and authored or co-authored more than 170 papers at scientific meetings. With his wife Carol H. Ammons, he founded two well respected journals in psychology, Psychological Reports and Perceptual and Motor Skills, which are still active.

His strong affection for his family was expressed in his persistent encouragement and support of high standards academically and personally. His family remembers him also insisting that on family bikes, they only go as fast as the slowest person in the group (little sister or granny) could manage. His care included seatbelts for all, even in the pickup, long before they were standard in cars, a love of reading and scientific research on every topic, educational trips to major observatories, professional and private researchers' laboratories, support for science fair projects and endless experiments, teaching kids to drive and understand how a car works. Classical music was a source of delight for him and Carol, and they encouraged their children in listening and making music. His close and appreciative attention was given, like it or not, to many thousands of students at the university, and to the employees in his business, whose well-being was of great importance to him. Grandchildren were perhaps his softest spot, and he loved eliciting an infant's smile, triggering a child's curiosity and discovery, and gently surprising even the smallest one with something unexpected. Most of all, he loved a mental challenge and actively pursued these, often to focus exploration of personal sensitivity and understanding. Seldom did he let up. We all will miss his richness in living.

Dr. Bob was preceded in death by his parents and a sister, Mary Virginia Zirker.

Survivors include his wife, Carol at the family home; son Carl and his wife Rachael, son Bruce and his wife Marni, son Doug and his wife Robin, all of Missoula; daughter Beth and her husband Dan Monroe of Whitefish; son Richard and his wife Stephanie of Missoula, daughter Stephanie and her husband Brad Isbell of Missoula; and daughter Nyss of Boulder, Colo. Also included are his brother Carl Luth of New Jersey and his children: Frieda, Erika, and Kurt of Brooklyn, N.Y., and a daughter Carolyn Ruth O'Neill of Petuluma, Calif. The 17 grandchildren include Zackary, Jeff, Carolyn, Sandy, Julie, Wren, Rob and Leslie, Callie, Cory and Cece, Max, Olivia, Alex, Andrew and Sophia, and Eli.

Survivors also include an extended family of former students who lived during their college years with the family and have continued affectionate friendships.

Immediate arrangements include a private family celebration. Cremation has taken place at Garden City Funeral Home and Crematory. A remembrance gathering will be announced at a later date in mid-summer. Memorial contributions for research may be made to the Ammons Auditorium, Virtual Reality Brain Science Center, in care of Sherry Dingman, Ph.D., Department of Psychology, Marist College, Poughkeepsie, NY or to the charity of your choice with his friendship in mind.

The family would deeply appreciate receiving any stories his friends, students, and coworkers might share with us, in writing or on tape. We are collecting these in the same historical spirit Dr. Bob always showed, to share with his family to come.

Mother loved to always be doing something, going somewhere. She grew up in Gladstone, Mich., the daughter of a Swedish Baptist preacher. Always remembering what a good life it was, being poor as church mice, but never even knowing it at all.

When the United States went to war, Ruth enlisted in the Army. It was while she was at Fort Baxter, in a chow line, her life would change forever. Unknown to her, she caught the eye of a handsome Army sergeant, who told his friend he was going to have her. They got married in Coeur d'Alene, Idaho, April 28, 1945, vowing that only death could separate them.

Ruth loved her children, Terry, Michael and Carolyn, and was a good mother, always at home taking care of her family, involved in everything they were, and everything Lee was. When Lee died in 1995, a part of her died, what else could happen after 50 years together. Ruth became very close to Carolyn as her daughter devoted herself to help her mom. Ruth loved attending her son Terry's church and had a wonderful spiritual experience the Friday before she died. She said I want to go be with PaPa (Lee) I am ready to go home to heaven. God in all of His wonder and love granted her final prayer, what a wonderful God we serve.
