Loren Dale Sax
SIDNEY - Funeral services for Loren D. Sax, 62, Sidney, will be 10 a.m. Monday, Aug. 2, 1999, at the Lonsdale United Methodist Church, Sidney, with Pastor John Ulrich officiating. Interment will be in the Richland Memorial Park, Sidney, under the direction of Fulkerson Funeral Home of Sidney.
Loren died at his home early Wednesday morning, July 28, 1999.

Loren Dale Sax passed away at his home in Sidney on Wednesday, July 28, 1999, after a valiant fight with ALS (Lou Gehrig's Disease). His courage and positive attitude were an inspiration to all who knew him. He was attended by his family and friends during his final hours.

Loren was born Oct. 3, 1936, in Watford City, N.D., to Merrill D. and Ruth V. (Jacobson) Sax. He attended grade school and high school in Sidney and graduated from Montana State University in 1958. Loren was an avid outdoorsman and an outstanding high school and college athlete.

Loren and Sharon Alice Apple were married in Lewistown on Aug. 25, 1957. Loren served in the military from 1958 to 1960 as a second lieutenant in the Army. Upon discharge from the service, he worked for Continental Oil as a district sales representative for six years in Billings, Glasgow and Great Falls. In 1967 Loren purchased the Coast to Coast store in Sidney which he owned and operated until ill health forced his retirement in 1994. He also owned the Heights Ace Hardware in Billings and the Montana Liquor Store in Sidney. Loren was an active member of Lonsdale Methodist Church, Kiwanis Club, Sidney Chamber of Commerce and the Sidney Country Club.

Loren is survived by his wife, Sharon; daughters, Dana Sax of Kent, Wash., and Lesley and husband, Doug Salvon of Bedford, Texas; his brother, Ron and wife, Janice of Missoula; his twin sister, Lorene Wood and husband, Jim of Sidney; and two special aunts, Judith Simkins and Vi Stenehjem of Arizona; and numerous nieces and nephews.

Loren was preceded in death by his parents.

Thomas R. Downey
Thomas R. Downey died peacefully in his sleep Thursday, July 29, 1999, at his home in Billings. Tom was born in Butte, Nov. 24, 1940, along with his identical twin brother, Jerry, to Patrick and Alice (Coles) Downey.
He attended grade school and high school in Butte. He continued his education at Montana Tech, where he played football for the Orediggers. He received his BS and MS degrees in education from Eastern Montana College.

Tom married Cathy Driscoll in Anaconda on Aug. 5, 1972. They have made their home in Billings since their marriage. On Dec. 24, 1975, Tom was blessed with his daughter, Megan, who was the pride and joy of his life.

Tom had a great passion for writing. His creative writing ability culminated in the publishing of his first novel, "Peter, Paul and Patrick, " in 1968.

An avid sports fan, Tom enjoyed every aspect of the sports arena. He was groundskeeper at Cobb Field before using his talents to coach young athletes. In 1976 he began teaching English at Billings West High School, where he coached football. He continued his teaching career at Will James Middle School, coaching football, cross country, and track. His greatest joy in coaching were the years as head cross country coach at West High. He took pride in all of his athletes and always admired their dedication to the sport.

Tom not only coached athletics but dedicated much of his spare time to the athletic programs at Eastern Montana College/MSU-Billings. As a result of this dedication, Tom was inducted into the EMC Athletic Hall of Fame in 1995 for his "years of service and distinction."

Survivors include his wife, Cathy; daughter, Megan of Spokane, Wash.; brothers and sisters-in-law, Patrick and Kathy Downey of Manitowac, Wis., Jerry and Mary Kay Downey of Coronado, Calif., Tim and Paula Downey of Helena, Mark and Linda Downey of Anaconda, Mike and Barbara Downey of Coeur d'Alene, Idaho; sisters and brothers-in-law, Mary Jule and Dan Ferriter, Rose Marie and Dave Hammond, all of Missoula, Alice and Bob McDonough, Geraldine Downey and Bob McCarthy of Butte, Theresa and George Gee of Spokane; aunts, Loretta Daly and Isabel Lowney, both of Butte; his brothers-in-law and sisters-in-law, Mary Ellen and Don James of Billings, Betty Ann and John Strawn of Spokane, Tom and JoAnn Driscoll of Highland Ranch, Colo., and Jack and Diane Driscoll of Manhattan Beach, Calif.; and numerous nieces, nephews and cousins. Tom was preceded in death by his parents and his sister, Loretta McCarthy.

Visitation will begin 1 p.m. Sunday at Michelotti, Sawyers & Nordquist. A Vigil service will be held 7 p.m. Sunday, Aug. 1, at Michelotti, Sawyers & Nordquist, 1001 Alderson Ave. Funeral Mass will be celebrated at 10:30 a.m. Monday, Aug. 2, at St. Thomas the Apostle Church with cremation to follow. Private interment will be in Holy Cross cemetery. Memorials may be directed to Big Sky Hospice, P.O. Box 35033, Billings, MT 59107-5033 or the charity of one's choice.

Joan Knudtson
SIDNEY - Joan Knudtson, 76, died Wednesday, July 28, 1999, at her home.
Services will be at 2 p.m. Saturday, July 31, at the Fulkerson Memorial Chapel with cremation to follow. Interment will be held at a later date at Big Lake cemetery in Homestead.

Betty Mae Michaelson
MERIDIAN, Idaho - Betty Mae Michaelson, 69, formerly of Billings, Mont., died Wednesday, July 28, 1999, at her home of natural causes.
Memorial services will be at 2 p.m. Monday, Aug. 2, at the Chapel of the Chimes.

Beryl B. Samel
Beryl B. Samel, 65, passed away Thursday, July 29, 1999, after a long courageous battle with cancer. Beryl was born Oct. 7, 1933, in Bismarck, N.D., to George and Annabelle (Salting) Bartlett.
Beryl and W. Arthur Samel were united in marriage on May 29, 1958, in Billings and together they had three sons. Arthur preceded her in death in 1982.

She is survived by her mother, Florence Bartlett; three sons: Rod (Marci) Samel of Aurora, Colo.; Greg and Brian Samel, both of Billings; two brothers: William (Kay) Bartlett of Billings and George (Mona) Bartlett of Newton, Ala.; four nieces and two nephews. She will also be missed by numerous loving friends.

Memorial services will be 2 p.m. Saturday, July 31, 1999, at the Mayflower Congregational Church on the corner of Rehberg and Poly Drive. Memorials can be made to Big Sky Hospice. Affordable Alternative Cremation & Burial Services is in charge of arrangements.

Dorothy J. Spainhower
SHERIDAN, Wyo. - Dorothy J. Spainhower, 93, died Thursday, July 29, 1999, at Sheridan Manor.
Visitation will be 5-7 p.m. Sunday, Aug. 1, at Kane Funeral Home. Graveside services will be at 11 a.m. Monday, Aug. 2, in the Sheridan Municipal cemetery.

Harold L. Wilson Sr.
CROW AGENCY - Harold L. Wilson Sr., 84, of Crow Agency, died on Tuesday, July 27, 1999, at the Sheridan V.A. Hospital, Sheridan, Wyo. He was born on May 23, 1915, in Unadella, Neb., a son of Brence C. and Luella Masse Wilson.
He was raised in Nebraska and Belle Fourche, S.D., where he attended school. Following his education, he was drafted into the U.S. Army on March 18, 1941. He served under the rank of private, in the QuarterMaster Section as a rifleman, truck driver and auto mechanic specialist. Service engagements were in the South Pacific with the American Defense in New Caledonia on April 20, 1942, and the Battle of Guadalcanal on Oct. 9, 1942. He was wounded in action at Guadalcanal on Nov. 7, 1942. Decorations awarded to him were the Asiatic Pacific Theater medal, a Service Ribbon and a Purple Heart. A Lapel Button was also issued when he returned to the U.S. from the Asiatic Pacific Theater on Jan. 25, 1943. He was given an Honorable Discharge on Dec. 21, 1943.

After serving in the Army, he worked on the railroads in the Sheridan area and up into Montana. During this time, he met Nora A. Wilson and was married in Crow Agency on Aug. 12, 1953. They made their home in Crow Agency and Harold worked various farms and ranches in the area and also was employed at the local sugar factory. Nora later died on Jan. 14, 1987, in Crow Agency.

Harold enjoyed his family, especially his grandchildren. He was well known to many in the area as "Old Buck." Harold was a member of the Four Square Church. His interests included hunting, fishing and auto mechanic work.

He was preceded in death by his parents; a sister, Viola Wilson Hall; his wife, Nora; a son, John F. Wilson; two stepsons, Benjamin R. Wilson and Henry L. Wilson Sr.

Survivors include four daughters: Rose Patterson of Everett, Wash., Mary Wilson of Billings, Lena Bell (Tyrone) of Crow Agency, and Peggy RisingSun (Phillip Sr.) of Busby; three sons: Lloyd O. Wilson of Browning, Harold L. Wilson Jr. (Karen) of Brigham City, Utah, Brence C. Wilson of Lodge Grass; one stepson: Dennis A. Wilson (Eva) of Albuquerque, N.M.; one brother: Clarence O. Wilson of Glenrock, Wyo.; 41 grandchildren and 14 great-grandchildren and numerous nieces and nephews.

Funeral Services for Harold Wilson Sr. will be held 2 p.m. Saturday in the Bullis Funeral Chapel. Interment will be in the Crow Agency cemetery.

Bullis Mortuary entrusted with arrangements.

Alpha J. Olsen
Alpha J. Olsen, 86, of Billings, died Wednesday, July 28, 1999, at Deaconess Hospital.
The daughter of Ira and Cora Parrott, Alpha was born Sept. 27, 1912, in Woodside Township, Mo. She married Howard Olsen in St. Louis, Dec. 20, 1935. They made their home in Billings for many years. Her husband preceded her in death July 26, 1984.

Survivors include her brother, Eugene Parrott of Florida; a sister, Lela Flowers of Columbus, Mo.; a niece, Judy Frank and her husband, George of Billings; and a grandniece, Kellie George of Austin, Texas.

Cremation has taken place. No services are planned.

Memorials may be made to Aspen Meadows.

Michelotti, Sawyers & Nordquist had charge of arrangements.

Opal Irene Orr
BURLINGTON, Wyo. - Opal Irene Orr, 85, of Burlington and formerly of Powell and Meeteetse, died Monday, July 26, 1999, in Powell.
Services will be at 9 a.m. Saturday, July 31, at the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints in Burlington with interment in the Crown Hill cemetery in Powell. Haskell Funeral Home of Lovell is in charge.

Lois D. Jackman
CHISAGO CITY, Minn. - Lois D. Jackman, of Chisago City, died Wednesday at Chisago Lake C&NC at the age of 81.
Lois Donnelly was born Oct. 16, 1917, at Burlington, Iowa, to John Arthur and Edna Ware Donnelly. She received her education in Burlington, graduating from high school and junior college. On May 29, 1939, she married Donald L. Jackman at Burlington. After several years in Ballantine, Mont., the family moved to Bismarck, N.D., in May 1955. Mrs. Jackman was employed by the Bismarck Public Schools, retiring in 1981. In April 1988 she and her husband moved to Chisago City.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Donald, and son, Richard. She is survived by her daughter, Judith (Jeffrey) Feldstein of Lino Lakes, and brother, John Donnelly of Florida.

There will be a private interment at Mountview cemetery in Billings, Mont. Arrangements were by the Grandstrand Funeral Home, Lindstrom.

Paul R. White
GILLETTE, Wyo. - Paul R. White, 39, died Monday, July 26, 1999, at Campbell County Memorial Hospital.
Memorial services will be at 10 a.m. Friday, July 30, at Holy Trinity Episcopal Church with interment in Mount Pisgah cemetery. Wilson Funeral Home is in charge.

Shirley Leathers Hartman
HAMILTON - Shirley Louise Leathers Hartman, 64, formerly of Livingston, died Monday, July 26, 1999, at her home of cancer.
Cremation has taken place. Graveside committal and burial of the cremated remains will be at 1 p.m. Saturday, July 31, at Mountain View cemetery in Livingston. Franzen-Davis Funeral Home and Crematory of Livingston is in charge.

Vivienne Schrank
JORDAN - Vivienne Diana Nault Schrank, 90, died Tuesday, July 27, 1999, in Jordan.
Private graveside services will be held in the Jordan Pioneer cemetery. A memorial service is planned at a later date. Bullis-Graves Memorial Chapel of Miles City is in charge of arrangements.

Roy Fischer
PLENTYWOOD - Funeral services for Roy Fischer will be at 10 a.m. Friday. Pastor Marvin Sieler will officiate at the service at the Plentywood Assembly of God Church; following a reception at the church, the procession will leave at 1 p.m. (MDT) to travel to Grenora, N.D., for interment rites there at 2:45 p.m. Central Time. Roy, 78, died Tuesday evening, July 27, at Sheridan Memorial Hospital in Plentywood, of an intra-cranial hemorrhage.
Roy was born Nov. 20, 1920, at the farm home of his parents, Edgar and Elsie (Bast) Fischer. He grew up there, graduated from Grenora High School and, after attending North Central Bible College in Minneapolis, was ordained as a pastor in the Assemblies of God. He pastored in Rolette, N.D., and met Fae M. Lesher at a Bible Camp at Devils Lake, N.D. They were married July 10, 1947 (and celebrated their 52nd anniversary while Roy was in the hospital.) They moved to Seattle, where Roy attended the Northwest College of the Assemblies of God for a quarter, then returned to North Dakota. After living in Cavalier for a time, Roy served as a pastor at Rugby, N.D., for two years. After pastoring in Columbus and in Baker, Mont., they lived in Billings for five years and Roy commuted to his ministry in Lodge Grass. Five years as a pastor in Circle were followed by a move to Sidney, where Roy worked with his brother, Gerald, until moving to Plentywood, Mont., in 1975 to own and operate the Trails End Motel. A gentle, loving man, Roy was always outgoing and cheerful; his spirited sense of humor brought a ministry of laughter to everyone he met. He was generous with everyone; he loved to sing, tell jokes, funny stories, puns and limericks; and he enjoyed antiques and reminiscing about the "good old days." He was always grateful for the kindness and caring spirit of his friends and the people who touched him and his family in any way, and was deeply appreciative of the care given to him and his family by the hospital staff.

Roy is survived by his wife, Fae, of Plentywood; by two sons, Roger Dale, of Plentywood and Rodney Byrl, who is with Youth With a Mission, based out of Arvada, Colo.; and by a daughter, Marilyn and her husband David Sowden, of Forest City, N.C. He is also survived by four grandchildren, John Sowden, and his wife Mary; and Tracey, Troy and Nick Sowden; by four great-grandchildren, Steven and Michael Sowden, Devan Sowden, and Shonda Schueneman. Roy is survived by two brothers, Rev. Ronald Fischer, and his wife Fern; and Gerald Fischer and his wife ElWanda, all of Sidney, Mont.; and three sisters; Agnes Garaas and her husband Olaf, and Grace Johnson and her husband Clarence, all of Grenora; and Marion Freiheit, and her husband Kenneth of the Minneapolis vicinity. Besides his parents, Roy was preceded in death by a brother in infancy, and his brother, Albert, and sister Lois Rohner.

Loyce L. Roberts
Our beloved mother, grandmother and great grandmother Loyce L. Roberts, 77, of Billings, formerly of Willard and Baker, passed away on Tuesday morning, July 27, at the St. Vincent's Hospital in Billings.
Loyce was born on Oct. 11, 1921, the daughter of Charles and Gracie Crawford in Anson, Texas. She grew up and attended schools in Onlye, Texas. Loyce worked as a "Rosie the Riveter" in Corpus Christie, Texas, before marrying Cecil "Graham" Roberts in 1947.

Graham and Loyce moved to Baker in 1957 where she worked at various jobs until moving to Willard in 1979 to become the postmaster, working there until 1995. After the death of her husband, Loyce moved to Billings to live with her daughter Deb in 1997.

Loyce was an accomplished seamstress and enjoyed crocheting, quilting and gardening. She was actively involved in the Willard Homemakers Club and Life's Patchwork Quilting Guild.

Survivors include a son, Butch and his wife, Barbara of Jordan, Mont.; a daughter, Deborah Roberts of Billings; a granddaughter, Patsy (Clint) Croy of Fort Peck; two grandsons, Ron Roberts of Bozeman and Jeremy Roberts of Billings; two great grandsons, Travis and Drew of Fort Peck; three sisters-in-law, Willa, Rheba and Virginia (Bob) Archer and their families, all of Texas. Her husband, parents and two brothers preceded her in death.

A Vigil Rosary will be held at 6 p.m. Friday, July 30, 1999, in the Stevenson's Funeral Home in Baker. A Mass will be celebrated in the St. John's Catholic Church at 11 a.m. Saturday, July 31, 1999. Burial will be at a later date in the Fairview cemetery in Gainesville, Texas. Stevenson's Funeral Home of Baker is in charge of the local arrangements.
