Harvey E. French
PLENTYWOOD - Funeral services for Harvey E. French will be held at 10 a.m. Thursday, July 27. Pastor Wes Aardahl and Johnette Grefe will officiate at the service at Plentywood Lutheran Church; a luncheon will follow the service, with interment in Redstone cemetery at 1:30 p.m. Harvey, 80, was dead on arrival at Sheridan Memorial Hospital in Plentywood at noon on Friday, July 23, after he suffered a sudden cardiac event at his Plentywood home.
Harvey was born at Redstone, Feb. 3, 1919, the son of Hugh and Mildred (Phelps) French. He grew up on the family farm south of Redstone; his family lived in Nashua for a short time while his brothers worked on Fort Peck Dam.

He served in Europe with the U.S. Army during World War II, and since his discharge, often told people that he served for three years, eight months, and 25 days! While he served in the signal corps, one of his duties was relaying telephone messages ... he spoke with Generals Bradley and Eisenhower, and on one occasion to Bob Hope! After his discharge, he returned to Montana to farm with his family.

He married Ardelle Haugen at her home in Westby on Nov. 12, 1949. They lived 17 miles south of Redstone, where Harvey farmed in partnership with his brother, Glenn. After retirement in 1989, Harvey and Ardelle moved to Plentywood, where they have lived since. Since 1984 they have spent the winter months in Mesa, Ariz.

Harvey was a devoted and loving husband, father, and grandfather who was always supportive of his family and friends. He loved to visit, and never met a stranger ... everyone was an old friend within minutes! He loved fishing with his friends, seeking Walleyes and fun times at various lakes in Saskatchewan. A staunch Democrat, he kept to his daily schedule of coffee and visits with friends to stay in touch with farming, oilfield activities and politics. The "Chief, " as he was known at Diamond B Trucking, the business of his son-in-law, Steve, and partner, Vic Lawson, was a valued advisor in the business. His daily visits over coffee were a treasured part of each day, and his counsel and companionship will be dearly missed. Since his retirement he continued to be involved in farming activities, mainly through his nephew, Gordie French. Helping him with harvest was the highlight of each year.

He enjoyed playing cards, especially whist, pinochle, and bridge; he had done some silversmithing and made jewelry for his family and friends. He was always involved with his children and grandchildren and participated in their activities and interests as much as he could; because they live close by, he became especially close to his grandsons, Chris and Josh. His daughters recall that when he came to visit, he always asked "where's the remote?!" and soon it was in his control - CNN and westerns were his favorites!

Harvey was baptized and confirmed and was a member of Faith Lutheran Church in the Wanso community. He served on various boards over the years: ASCS, Redstone Elevator, Outlook School Board, Faith Lutheran Church Council and Security State Bank. Recently, he had been working for approval of street paving in his neighborhood.

Harvey is survived by his wife, Ardelle of Plentywood; they would have celebrated their golden anniversary this fall. He is also survived by three daughters and their families: Debbie James and her husband, Paul of Garland, Texas, and children, Angela, Aaron, and Allyson; Peggy Bowman and her husband, Steve of Westby, and their sons, Chris and Joshua; and Bobette Schreiber and her children, Jace and Kaelyn, also of Garland. He is also survived by a brother, Don, and his wife, Betty of Derrington, Wash.; and sisters-in-law, Winnie of Butte and Violet of Plentywood. Besides his parents, he was preceded in death by two brothers, Glenn and Willard, and by a grandson, Zachary Bowman.
