Martha Ryder Skauge
Martha Ryder Skauge, of Billings, passed away peacefully Thursday, July 22, 1999, at Western Manor Health Care Center after a long illness.
Martha was born Dec. 28, 1922, to Henry and Katherine Ryder and was raised and schooled in Laurel. She married Walter "Don" Skauge, Sept. 28, 1947, in Billings.

In her early years, Martha worked at the Northern Hotel and later she and Don owned and operated the Lavina Bar from 1957 to 1963. In 1966 she moved to Red Lodge where she and her son, John, owned and operated the Beartooth Bar until 1969. She returned to Billings in 1969 and became active in the rental business as well as several other businesses, including Charlie Brown's, Coulson City Saloon and Buck's Bar, which she was involved in until the time of her death.

She is survived by her two sons, John Skauge and Mike Skauge of Billings; one sister, Lydia Fox of Billings; four grandchildren, Jeff, Martie, Brian and Brent; four great-grandchildren, Whitney, Shelby, Katlyn and JaAnna Dawn, who was born the morning of her death. She was preceded in death by her husband, Don; twin sons, Marc and Marty; two brothers, Henry and Alex; and three sisters, Betty Burch, Mary Hines and Rose Nissen.

Martha will be greatly missed by many as a true friend and successful business woman. "Mom, we're going to miss the times at the kitchen table."

Funeral services will be 2 p.m. Monday, July 26, at Smith's West Chapel, 304 34th St. W. Interment will follow at Sunset Memorial Gardens. Visitation will be 12 to 8 Sunday and 9 to 2 on Monday at Smith's West Chapel.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Faith Chapel.

The family would like to thank the staff at Unit 2 of Western Manor for their kindness and wonderful care they provided for Martha. "Rest in Peace"

Nancy Lou Dworkin
LIVINGSTON - Nancy Lou Dworkin, 48, died Thursday, July 22, 1919, at Livingston Memorial Hospital.
Cremation has taken place and memorial services will be at 2 p.m. Sunday, July 25, in the chapel of Franzen-Davis Funeral Home.

Elizabeth J. Stahl
LEWISTOWN - Elizabeth J. Stahl, 54, died Thursday, July 22, 1999, at the Central Montana Medical Center of natural causes.
Services will be at 1 p.m. Saturday, July 24, at the Deerfield Colony with interment in the colony cemetery. The Cloyd Funeral Home is in charge.

Daniel Woodard
ROBERTS - Daniel Woodard, 66, died peacefully in his sleep early Monday morning, July 19, 1999, in his Roberts home.
Dan was born on Jan. 22, 1933, in Deer Park, Wash., a son of Finch and Dorothy Woodard. After graduating from high school, Dan enlisted in the U.S. Navy, serving for four years. Following his discharge, he began a 26-year career as an air traffic controller.

On Aug. 11, 1956, Dan married Amaryles "Sally" Hartline in La Fayette, Ga. They resided in Rawlins, Wyo., and later lived in Colorado Springs, Colo., and Spokane and Deer Park.

After retiring, they settled on their ranch at Roberts where Dan was very successful raising registered Angus cattle. Sally died in 1992.

On July 29, 1995, he married Phyllis Karas. Dan loved to fish and travel.

Survivors include his wife, Phyllis of Roberts; two daughters, Jo (Ed) Lewis of Deer Park, and Vicki (Ian) Mackenzie of Morrison, Colo.; and five grandchildren, Danelle, Lyndsey, Eddie, Aymber and Simon. Also surviving are Dawn (Michael) O'Shea, Debra Karas, Bill (Margaret) Karas, Stacey (Todd) Lane, and Dannielle (Tony) Kendall; and eight additional grandchildren.

Funeral services will be held at 10:30 a.m. Saturday, July 24, in the Roberts United Methodist Church. Visitation will be Friday at the Olcott Funeral Chapel from 9 to 5 p.m. and 7 to 9 p.m. The casket will be closed at the church. Interment will be in the Roberts cemetery.

Memorials may be directed to the Beartooth Hospital & Health Center Auxiliary, P.O. Box 590, Red Lodge, MT 59068.

William Carleton (Silky) Dale
SACRAMENTO, Calif. - William Carleton (Silky) Dale, formerly of Billings, Mont., was born Aug. 16, 1911, and entered into rest July 15, 1999.
Funeral services were held in Sacramento at Lind Brothers Mortuary, Carmichael Oak Chapel, July 17, 1999. Interment was July 20, 1999, at Mountview cemetery in Billings with special arrangements by Smith Funeral Chapel.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Margaret (Crowley) Dale, and son, Richard C. Dale. He is survived by his grandchildren, Leslie, Dawn and Mike, and great-grandchildren, David, Robert, Joe, Michael and Danny.

"Grandpa you will be forever in our hearts."

Dewey 'Carp' Nunn
SHERIDAN, Wyo. - Dewey "Carp" Nunn passed away July 22, 1999, after a short battle with cancer. He was 78. Dewey was born Jan. 21, 1921, in Dawson, N.D. He was the son of John "Red" Nunn and Josie Nunn. He graduated from Dawson High School in 1941 and then joined the Army. He served in the infantry for four years during WWII in North Africa and Italy.
After the war, he returned to Dawson and married Helen Emelia Mode of Steele, N.D., (the high school rival) on March 13, 1947. He owned and operated Carp's Bar in Dawson until 1951, when he and Helen and their two children moved to Laurel. Dewey worked for the Northern Pacific Railroad in Laurel for two years before starting work with the City of Laurel. He did many jobs for the city before becoming operator of the Waste Treatment Plant; he retired in January 1982.

"Carp" enjoyed playing cards, fishing and was an avid hunter. A perfect day for him would have ended with all his tags filled or his bag limit of birds. He coached baseball in Laurel for 13 years, from Little League through American Legion. He was a staunch Democrat and ready to talk politics with anyone who would listen (or argue!). After retiring, Dewey and Helen moved to Sheridan. They spent time with family and friends, traveling in their motor home and fishing on their boat.

Dewey was preceded in death by his parents, three brothers, two sisters and a granddaughter, Sarah Nunn. He is survived by his wife, Helen of Sheridan; son, Dennis and his wife, Frances of Worden; daughter, Linda Svaren of Kalispell; grandchildren: Jessie Nunn of Worden; Erik Svaren of Missoula; Nissa Svaren of Electric City, Wash.; Melanie Ash of Rapid City, S.D.; and Tim Ash of United States Air Force Academy, Colo.; Jessie's mother, Lisa Nunn of Laurel; and Erik and Nissa's father, Wayne Svaren of Electric City. He also leaves behind two brothers: Clyde of Steele and Delmer and wife, Laura of Dawson; four sisters: Nome Nunn and Mardella Fergeson of Victorville, Calif., and Sybil McGill and Joan Barnick of Grand Forks, N.D.; brothers-in-law: Charles and wife, Eleanor Mode of Cherry Hill, N.J., and Al Luebke of Grey Eagle, Minn.; sisters-in-law: Donna Nunn of Mankato, Minn., and Ethel Nunn of Dawson; nephew, Dick Mode and wife, Sharon of Missoula; niece, Karen Thompson of Klamath Falls, Ore.; special hunting buddy, Millie Johnston of Reno, Nev.; and many other nieces and nephews.

Cremation has taken place. Cremains will be interred at the North Dakota Veterans cemetery in Mandan, N.D., with a military funeral on Thursday, July 29, at 2 p.m. Donations to Big Sky Hospice or the charity of your choice. Arrangements were by Cremation or Funeral Gallery, Cremation Society of Montana, 29 8th St. W., Billings, MT 59101-2914.

Jennifer A. Haag
FORSYTH - Jennifer A. Haag, age 13, of Forsyth, passed away on Wednesday afternoon, July 21, 1999, at the St. Vincent Hospital in Billings from injuries she suffered after being struck by lightning while on the Tongue River Reservoir.
Jennifer was born on June 11, 1986, at Miles City, the daughter of Nick C. and Gail (Clevenger) Haag. She attended grade school in Forsyth and was entering the seventh grade. She loved the outdoors and enjoyed doing many activities with her family, including snowmobiling, biking, hiking, swimming, water skiing, tubing, camping and playing with her dog "Rascal." She also enjoyed basketball and softball.

Jennifer is survived by her parents, Nick and Gail Haag of Forsyth; grandparents, Martin and Evelyn Haag of Fairfield, N.D., and Melvin and Helen Morgart of Miles City; a brother, Martin "Marty" Haag and a sister, Alicia Haag, both of the family home in Forsyth; and numerous aunts, uncles and cousins.

Family will receive friends during visitation on Friday, July 23, 1999, from 10 a.m. to 8 p.m. at Stevenson & Sons Funeral Home in Forsyth. A Vigil service will be held on Friday, July 23, 1999, at 7 p.m. in the Chapel of Stevenson & Sons Funeral Home in Forsyth. Mass of Christian Burial will be held on Saturday, July 24, 1999, at 10 a.m. in the Immaculate Conception Catholic Church in Forsyth with Father Gil Hemauer-Capuchin Celebrant. Rite of Committal will follow in the family lot in the Forsyth cemetery. Stevenson & Sons Funeral Home of Forsyth is in charge of arrangements.

Should friends desire, memorials may be made to the family of Jennifer Haag, 242 N. 13th, Forsyth, Mont. 59327, to be established for youth sports.

Kurt Bane Burris
Kurt Bane Burris passed away suddenly at his home on July 21, 1999. He was born June 27, 1932, in Nowata, Okla., the son of Paul and Myrtle Ann (Pierce) Burris and grew up in Muskogee, Okla.
Kurt attended the University of Oklahoma, graduating in 1956. He played football for the Sooners, was named All-American, and was runner up for the Heisman Trophy. He went on to play pro football in the Canadian League for the Edmonton Eskimos when they won the Canadian Grey Cup in 1955.

On May 28, 1955, Kurt was united in marriage to Rosemary Major. He began his business career with Regent Drilling Co. in Edmonton, Alberta, later becoming president of his own company, Burris Drilling in Denver. At the time of his retirement, he was president of Cardinal Drilling Co. He was preceded in death by his parents and a beloved brother, Don.

Survivors include his wife, Rosemary; their three children, Kurt Major (Leslie), Bryan Kyle (Elizabeth), and daughter, Mary Jane; five grandchildren, Ryan, Kelsey, Tyler, Ariel, and Connor; nine sisters and brothers, Martha Reed (J.K.), Paul "Buddy" (Betty), Pauline Stavely (Bill), Bobbie Norman (Charles), Vera Miller, Robert (Louise), Lynn (Paula), Lyle (Carol), and Pat Bellinger; and a sister-in-law, Shirley.

Cremation has taken place and a memorial service will be held 10 a.m. Monday, July 26, at St. Stephen's Episcopal Church. Memorials in Kurt's memory may be directed to St. Stephen's Episcopal Church, 1241 Crawford Dr., Billings, MT 59102, or the charity of one's choice. Michelotti, Sawyers & Nordquist has charge of arrangements.

Charles 'Charley' Henry Jones
Charles "Charley" Henry Jones, 86, of Billings, went to be with the Lord, July 21, 1999, at Parkview Nursing Home.
Charley was born Aug. 16, 1912, son of John A. Jones and Mary Rose Jones of Roundup.

After his father died in 1936, Charley started working for the Montana State Highway Department in Roundup to keep the family ranch going. He later worked for Stanley Arkwright Construction Co., Barry O'Leary and also as an independent truck driver until retiring in 1970.

He is a member of the Teamsters Union.

Charley enjoyed his friends at Parkview, enjoyed talking about the "Good Old Days, " and his friend Parker, a bird at Parkview.

Surviving are two brothers, Harold of Billings and Arnold of Nevada; four sisters, Lillian Tafalla of Roundup, Ada McKeen, Gertrude Leeson, Myrtle Yaroslaski, all of Billings; also surviving are numerous nieces and nephews.

Funeral services will be 3 p.m. Wednesday, July 28, at the Smith Downtown Chapel. Interment will be at Mountview cemetery.

Avis G. Anderson
LEWISTOWN - Avis G. (Spaulding) Anderson, 92, died Thursday, July 22, 1999, at the Central Montana Medical Center of natural causes.
Services will be at 10:30 a.m. Saturday, July 24, at the First Christian Church with interment in the Lewistown City cemetery. The Cloyd Funeral Home is in charge.

Delia Guay Pearce
Mrs. Delia "Dee" Pearce, of Billings, died at home Sunday, July 18, 1999. "Dee" was born in Butte, Oct. 27, 1919, the daughter of Achille and Mary "Lainey" Guay.
She was educated at St. Ann's Grade School and Girls Central High School.

Dee and Albert "Al" Pearce were married in Butte, January 1941. He died in Billings in 1973. Dee worked for many years for the Diana Shops in Billings.

Dee was a member of St. Patrick's Parish in Billings for many years and the Thumb Green Garden Club in Billings. She did Volites work at Alberta Bair.

She is survived by brothers, Lewis, Richard and Norman Guay; nephews and nieces, Anne Marie Tripp, Linda Rooney, Michael, John and Joseph Sullivan and Patrick Watcher. Several grandnieces and nephews also survive.

She is preceded in death by her husband; parents; brother, Arthur; sister and brother-in-law, Marian and John Sullivan; sisters-in-law, Rita and June Guay; brother-in-law, Merv Pearce.

Dee leaves many friends and associates in the Billings area.

As to her wishes she will be cremated and her remains interred with her mother and father.

There will be no wake or visitation at Duggan Dolan Mortuary. Liturgy of the Resurrection will be celebrated at 11 a.m. Friday in St. Ann's Catholic Church. Memorials are requested to St. Patrick's Parish in Billings, St. Ann's Parish in Butte, Alberta Bair Theatres in Billings or Butte Catholic Education Funds.

Victoria Marie Wilson
BIG TIMBER - Victoria Marie Wilson, 92, passed away at Pioneer Medical Center on Wednesday, July 21, 1999.
Victoria was born June 17, 1907, to James M. and Victoria May (Tobel) Hamilton in Lat. She graduated from Wilsall High School. On April 11, 1930, she was united in marriage to Fred J. Wilson in Livingston. He preceded her in death on Nov. 2, 1981.

Victoria was a member of St. Mary's Catholic Church in Livingston and a member of the Moose Lodge of Big Timber when it was in operation.

Victoria enjoyed ranching, working in her yard and raising her sweet sons: Edward, Fred, Dennis and David.

She was preceded in death by three brothers: Jim, John and Charles Hamilton; five sisters: Ann Christensen, Aggie Rennie, Ruth Rowland, Kate Pinto, and Ginger Mjolness; and one grandson: Brian Wilson on Jan. 10, 1988.

Survivors include four sons: Edward and Jane Wilson of Wilsall; Fred J. and Donna Wilson Jr. of Wilsall; Dennis and Joyce Wilson of Gardiner; and David and Marilyn Wilson of Big Timber; 10 grandchildren; 13 great-grandchildren; and six great-great-grandchildren.

Visitation will be from 6 to 9 p.m. on Friday, July 23, at Lowry Funeral Home. Graveside services will be 10 a.m., Saturday, July 24, 1999, at Wilsall cemetery with Pastor Dave Barnhart officiating. A coffee hour will follow at the Wilsall Senior Citizens Center. Memorials may be made to Wilsall cemetery c/o Nordic Lenneman, Wilsall, MT 59086 or to the donor's choice. Lowry Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.
